Abstract:Nicotine and its major metabolite cotinine are widely used as markers of tobacco smoke abstinence as well as indicators of active smoking levels and the assessment of passive inhalation of tobacco smoke in nonsmokers. Therefore, using an easy-to-prepare sensing platform that can provide a rapid, highly sensitive response for the simultaneous detection of salivary nicotine levels and urinary cotinine levels is especially crucial for helping heavy cigarette smokers quit smoking and protecting public health. Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks, as a novel class of porous crystalline materials, show immense potential for functional modification and optical sensing. Herein, a new HOF was prepared by a simple solvent evaporation method, and a dual-emitting material Eu(bpy)@HOF-215(1) was obtained by the postsynthetic modification of HOF by lanthanide luminescent complexes, which maintains favorable structural stability and introduces the characteristic emitting of Eu, allowing use as a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for salivary nicotine and urinary cotinine, with a limit of detection of nicotine of 0.045 μM in saliva and a limit of detection of cotinine of 0.591 μM in urine. Furthermore, luminescent inks based on HOF-215 have been fabricated based on the photoresponse variations of 1 to NIC and COT, which enables the multilevel encryption and decryption of information, in a dynamic and recyclable process. This work not only synthesizes a novel blue HOF but also provides a representative successful case of a dual-function platform for simultaneous application to ratiometric sensing and dynamic anticounterfeiting.
Multifaceted Applications of Luminescent Metalloporphyrin Derivatives: Fluorescence Turn-On Sensing of Nicotine and Antimicrobial Activity

Abstract:In this study, we designed and synthesized metalloporphyrin derivatives (with Ni and Zn) specifically intended for the fluorescence detection of nicotine in aqueous solutions. Our results showcased a notable selectivity for nicotine over other naturally occurring food toxins, exhibiting an exceptional sensitivity with a limit of detection as low as 7.2 nM. Through mechanistic investigations (1H NMR, FT-IR, etc.), we elucidated the binding mechanism, revealing the specific interaction between the pyridine ring of nicotine and the metal center, while the N atom pyrrolidine unit engaged in the hydrogen bonding with the side chain of the porphyrin ring. Notably, we observed that the nature of the metal center dictated the extent of interaction with nicotine; particularly, Zn-porphyrin demonstrated a superior response compared to Ni-porphyrin. Furthermore, we performed the quantitative estimation of nicotine in commercially available tobacco products. Additionally, we conducted the antibacterial (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) and antifungal (Candida albicans) activities of the porphyrin derivatives.

Abstract:Nicotine (Nic) exposed to the environment which comes from tobacco products is the main addictive agent and specific classes of hazardous compound that merit concern. In this study, we have established a fast and reliable method to achieve specific detection of Nic in natural nicotiana tabacum within 30 s through a miniaturized platform based on screen printed gold electrode (SPE). A simple electrochemical pretreatment mean was employed on gold surface that led to the exposure of Au (111) facet and a convenient sample pretreatment method was adopted to realize the extraction of Nic in tobacco. The present electrochemical sensor exhibits an ample range of sensing from 10 mu g/g to 200 mu g/g, which is able to compliance with tobacco industry testing standards of actual samples. Over 60 sampling points from different origins in China or other countries were performed with direct analysis using this method and satisfactory results have been obtained. The proposed approach was demonstrated to be a very promising platform for significantly improving analytical efficiency in laboratories as well as for monitoring the source reduction control of Nic in the environment. Mechanistic Insight into a Novel Ultrasensitive Nicotine Assay Base on High-Efficiency Quenching of Gold Nanocluster Cathodic Electrochemiluminescence

Abstract:Monitoring nicotine concentrations in human fluids is extremely crucial owing to the harmful effect of nicotine on human health. Herein, it is shown that nicotine could quench the cathodic electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) with high efficiency. The ECL quenching mechanism of nicotine was studied in detail using various experimental tools and theoretical calculations. It was concluded that the strongly oxidizing intermediate SO4•-, produced from K2S2O8 could oxidized nicotine, resulting in ECL emission quenching. Based on this high-efficiency ECL quenching of the AuNCs/K2S2O8 system, a recyclable, ultra-sensitive, and selective ECL sensing platform for nicotine detection was proposed. Even in the absence of any complex signal amplification techniques, the ECL sensor for nicotine detection showed an unprecedentedly low detection limit of 7.0×10-13 M (S/N = 3) and a wide linear range over 8 orders of magnitude. Most remarkably, it could be successfully used for nicotine detection in human urine samples. This is expected to promote the investigations and applications on nicotine-related diseases. We believe that the proposed ECL platform can hold great prospects for commercialization in biomedical fields and tobacco industries.

Abstract:Nicotine exposure can lead to neurological impairments and brain tumors, and a label-free and nondestructive detection technique is urgently required by the scientific community to assess the effects of nicotine on neural cells. Herein, a terahertz (THz) time-domain attenuated total reflection (TD-ATR) spectroscopy approach is reported, by which the effects of nicotine on normal and cancerous neural cells, i.e., HEB and U87 cells, are successfully investigated in a label/stain-free and nondestructive manner. The obtained THz absorption coefficients of HEB cells exposed to low-dose nicotine and high-dose nicotine are smaller and larger, respectively, than the untreated cells. In contrast, the THz absorption coefficients of U87 cells treated by nicotine are always smaller than the untreated cells. The THz absorption coefficients can be well related to the proliferation properties (cell number and compositional changes) and morphological changes of neural cells, by which different types of neural cells are differentiated and the viabilities of neural cells treated by nicotine are reliably assessed. Collectively, this work sheds new insights on the effects of nicotine on neural cells, and provides a useful tool (THz TD-ATR spectroscopy) for the study of chemical-cell interactions.

Abstract:In the past year, there has been significant progress in the utilization of electrochemical strategies for the determination of harmful substances. Among those, the electrochemical determination of nicotine (NIC) has continued to be of significant interest ascribed to the global health concern of e-cigarette products, nowadays. Electrochemical sensors have become promising tools for the detection of NIC ascribed to their high sensitivity, selectivity, and ease of use. This review article provides a concise overview of the advanced developments in electrochemical sensors for NIC detection using modified functional materials such as carbon-based materials, metal–organic frameworks (MOF), MXene, polymer, and metallic based modifiers. The sensitivity of electrochemical sensors can be improved by modifying them with these conductive materials ascribed to their physical and chemical properties. The review also addresses the challenges and future perspectives in the field, including sensitivity and selectivity improvements, stability and reproducibility issues, integration with data analysis techniques, and emerging trends. In conclusion, this review article may be of interest to researchers intending to delve into the development of functional electrochemical sensors in future studies.

Abstract:A smart portable sensor with ratio and dual-mode for in-situ determination of nicotine (NIC) in tobacco leaves was reported. Activated screen-printed carbon electrode was used as sensing platform. Paracetamol was used as a ratiometric reference. Current and potential dual-signal output was applied as dual-mode. Scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, square wave voltammetry, and NIC morphological fitting and theoretical calculation were used to study the sensor. Under the amperometric mode, the linear range of NIC is 10-800 μmol/L, and the detection limit is 1.72 μmol/L (S/N = 3). And under the potential mode, the linear range of NIC is 10-500 μmol/L, and the detection limit is 0.02 μmol/L (S/N = 3). In addition, the proposed sensor has been applied to in-situ determination of NIC in tobacco leaves with acceptable relative derivation ranging from 5.04% to 7.63% between the sensor and high performance liquid chromatography.

Abstract:Smoking can cause cigarette-related diseases and pose serious threat to human health. Its dangers can be effectively controlled by discriminating cigarettes and monitoring cigarette quality. Herein, a kind of artificial tongue technique based on the indicator displacement assay (IDA) was developed and applied to determine and discriminate cigarettes and their main ingredients (saccharides, organic acids and nicotine). This method was constructed using carbon nanodots (CDs) as a fluorescent indicator and various concentrations of silver ion (Ag+) as a fluorescent regulator. A cigarette extracting solution was prepared to interact with an artificial tongue and produce fluorescence fingerprints. Twenty-nine kinds of cigarettes can be well discriminated in terms of category (flue-cured cigarette, blended cigarette and cigar), brand, origin (domestic or foreign cigarettes) after processing and visualizing the response fingerprints. The artificial tongue fluorescent sensor array can sensitively detect nine kinds of tobacco-based chemical ingredients and discriminate them between different concentrations. The as-prepared fluorescent artificial tongue is a promising platform for monitoring cigarette quality and controlling the harmful effects of smoking because of its cheap material requirements, simple operation, and good performance.

Abstract:A novel modified electrode(HMCS/SPCE) was developed to electrochemically detect nicotine based on screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) modified with hollow mesoporous carbon spheres(HMCS) synthesized through one step process.HMCS and HMCS/SPCE were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),X-ray diffraction (XRD),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectrometry.Due to the superior electrical conductivity and high electrochemical active sites of HMCS,nicotine was significantly electro-oxidized on the interface of HMCS/SPCE.The proposed sensor provided linear responses upon nicotine in the concentration range of 0-500 μmol/L.The sensitivity was 0.850 mA/(cm2 · mmol · L),and the limit of detection was calculated to be 0.058 μmol/L.With a favourable reproducibility and a good stability,the sensor could be used to detect nicotine in cigarette samples accurately.

Abstract:Cigarette smoke will cause irreversible damage to human health and living environment. It is especially important to accurately detect and effectively prevent cigarette smoke. This paper fabricates a fiber membrane filmed with carbon nanopowders as a smoke sensor. The experiment reveals that the fabricated membrane is sensitive to the smoke, two laws are proposed to model the current change of the sensor. Fractal calculus is used to exactly predict the current property at the initial stage, and a fractal modification of the current law is proposed. The present technology provides an economic way to mass-production of smoke sensors.

Abstract:Rapid and accurate detection of nicotine is important due to its detrimental effects on human beings and recent surge in the usage of electronic cigarettes. In this paper, we report an electrochemical sensor for nicotine detection by using screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) modified with nitrogen-doped graphene sheets (NGS). NGS was synthesized and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectrometry. Due to the superior electron transfer capability and the doped nitrogen atoms, NGS shows high catalytic activity for the electro-oxidation of nicotine, with a significant decrease in the overpotential. Using the NGS-based nicotine sensor, we obtained detection sensitivity at 0.627mA·cm−2mM−1 with the limit of detection at 47nM nicotine. Moreover, the sensor shows favorable selectivity and long-term stability for detecting nicotine in urine and tobacco samples.

Abstract:Cigarette smoke is one of the six major pollution sources in the room air. It contains large number of particles with size less than 10 nm. There exist carbon dots (CDs) in cigarette smoke which have strong fluorescence and with good bio-compatibility and low toxicity. CDs in cigarette smoke can be applied in bio-imaging which has great potential applications in the integration of cancer diagnosis and treatment. In this paper, CDs were extracted from cigarette smoke. Then, sodium borohydride was added to CDs aqueous solution for reduction and the reduced CDs (R-CDs) were used for biological cell imaging. The results indicate that the CDs with the particle size $<$10 nm in cigarette smoke are self-assembled by the polymerizated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and ammonium nitrite which are disk nano-structure composed of $sp^2$/$sp^3$ carbon and oxygen/nitrogen groups or polymers. Sodium borohydride can reduce the carbonyl group on the surface of CDs to hydroxyl group and increase the ratio of the Na 1s ratio of the CDs from 1.86 to 7.42. The CDs can emit blue fluorescence under ultraviolet irradiation. After reduction, the R-CDS have the intensity of fluorescence 7.2 times than before and the fluorescence quantum yield increase from 6.13\% to 8.86\%. The photoluminescence (PL) wavelength of R-CDS have red-shift of 7 nm which was due to the increasing of Na element ratio. The onion epidermal cells labeled with R-CDs show that the CDs could pass through the cell wall into the cell and reach the nucleus. The cell wall and the nucleus could be clearly visualized. CDs also shows low toxicity to human bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B) with good biological activity. The obtained results indicate that the CDs and R-CDs have good fluorescent property which could be used as bio-imaging agent.
WO3@MOF Heterostructure In-Situ Transformed and Deposited on La-Bi2WO6-BiFeWOx Composite with Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance for Degradation of Harmful and Toxic Substances Produced by Tobacco

Abstract:Nowadays, tobacco is widely cultivated, and there are millions of people who smoke around the world. The cultivation of tobacco, along with the handling of cigarettes and the consumption of tobacco products, can produce numerous harmful and toxic substances. Many researchers are working diligently to eliminate these harmful and toxic substances. However, the results have been minimal. In this paper, we successfully prepared a novel La-Bi2WO6-BiFeWOx-WO3@MOF 2 WO 6-BiFeWO x-WO 3 @MOF using hydrothermal and in-situ transformation methods. All samples were thoroughly investigated using various characterization techniques, including XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, UV-Vis absorption spectra, transient photocurrent responses, and electron spin resonance. Furthermore, La-Bi2WO6- 2 WO 6- BiFeWOx-WO3@MOF x-WO 3 @MOF was utilized as a catalyst for the degradation of harmful and toxic substances produced by tobacco, including phenol, nicotine, benzopyrene, and nitrosamines. The results indicate that La-Bi2WO6-BiFe- 2 WO 6-BiFe- WOx-WO3@MOF x-WO 3 @MOF exhibits efficient separation and transfer of photo-generated electron-hole pairs under visible light irradiation. La-Bi2WO6-BiFeWOx-WO3@MOF 2 WO 6-BiFeWO x-WO 3 @MOF also exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity, efficiently degrading phenol (98.62%), nicotine (92.41%), benzopyrene (81.74%), and nitrosamine (98.23%). Furthermore, the effects of varying catalyst dosage, phenol concentration, and pH values, as well as the degradation of nicotine, benzopyrene, and nitrosamine by La-Bi2WO6-BiFeWOx-WO3@MOF, 2 WO 6-BiFeWO x-WO 3 @MOF, were also investigated. The main active radicals are center dot OH and center dot O2- 2 - during the degradation process. Finally, a potential degradation mechanism for phenol, nicotine, benzopyrene, and nitrosamine by La-Bi2WO6-BiFeWOx-WO3@MOF 2 WO 6-BiFeWO x-WO 3 @MOF is proposed.

Abstract:Cytisine (CTS) is a useful medicine for treating nervous disorders and smoking addiction, and exploring a convenient method to detect CTS is of great significance for long-term/home medication to avoid the risk of poisoning, but it is full of challenges. Here, a modified metal-organic framework sensor Tb@Zn-TDA-80 with dual emission centers was prepared using a post-modified luminescence center strategy. The obtained Tb@Zn-TDA-80 can serve as a CTS sensor with high sensitivity and selectivity. To achieve portable detection, Tb@Zn-TDA-80 was further fabricated as a membrane sensor, M-Tb@Zn-TDA-80, which displayed an obvious CTS-responsive color change by simply dropping a CTS solution onto its surface. Benefiting from this unique functionality, M-Tb@Zn-TDA-80 successfully realized the visual detection and quantitative monitoring of CTS in the range of 5.26-52.6 mM by simply scanning the color with a smartphone. The results of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and theoretical computation illustrated that the high sensing efficiency of Tb@Zn-TDA-80 for CTS was attributed to the N-H⋅⋅⋅π and π⋅⋅⋅π interactions between the ligand and CTS. And luminescence quenching may result from the intramolecular charge transfer. This study provides a convenient method for ensuring long-term medication safety at home.

Nicotine displaced 2-(4-pyridyl)imino nitroxide when it was added to a solution of 2-(4-pyridyl)imino nitroxide-tetraphenylporphyrin zinc(II). The fluorescence intensity of tetraphenylporphyrin zinc(II) was altered by sequentially addition of 2-(4-pyridyl)imino nitroxide and nicotine. This was used to develop a new method for detection of nicotine.

Abstract:For many years, CA is used as a cigarette smoke filter, but there are recent developments in absorbent materials such as zeolite and its derivatives, AC composites, modified graphene, MIPs, various composites, and hybrid materials. The question is how to design the next generation of highly selective, emerging advanced materials that can protect smokers from the harmful components of cigarette smoke. Cigarettes, despite being economically important legal consumer products, are highly addictive and harmful, particularly to the respiratory system. Tobacco smoke is a complex mixture containing over 7000 chemical compounds, 86 of which are identified to have "sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity" in either animal or human tests. Thus, tobacco smoke poses a significant health risk to humans. This article focuses on materials that help reduce the levels of major carcinogens in cigarette smoke; these include nicotine, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, tobacco‐specific nitrosamines, hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and formaldehyde. Specifically, the research progress on adsorption effects and mechanisms of advanced materials such as cellulose, zeolite, activated carbon, graphene, and molecularly imprinted polymers are highlighted. The future trends and prospects in this field are also discussed. Notably, with advancements in supramolecular chemistry and materials engineering, the design of functionally oriented materials has become increasingly multidisciplinary. Certainly, several advanced materials can play a critical role in reducing the harmful effects of cigarette smoke. High-efficient nickel-doped lignin carbon dots as a fluorescent and smartphone-assisted sensing platform for sequential detection of Cr(VI) and ascorbic acid

Abstract:Using lignin as a raw material to prepare fluorescent nanomaterials represents a significant pathway toward the high-value utilization of waste biomass. In this study, Ni-doped lignin carbon dots (Ni-LCDs) were rapidly synthesized with a yield of 63.22 % and a quantum yield of 8.25 % using a green and simple hydrothermal method. Exploiting the inner filter effect (IFE), Cr(VI) effectively quenched the fluorescence of the Ni-LCDs, while the potent reducing agent ascorbic acid (AA) restored the quenched fluorescence, thus establishing a highly sensitive fluorescence switch sensor platform for the sequential detection of Cr(VI) and AA. Importantly, the integration of a smartphone facilitated the portability of Cr(VI) and AA detection, enabling on-site, in-situ, and real-time monitoring. Ultimately, the developed fluorescence and smartphone-assisted sensing platform was successfully applied to detect Cr(VI) in actual water samples and AA in various fruits. This study not only presents an efficient method for the conversion and utilization of waste lignin but also broadens the application scope of the CDs in the field of smart sensors.

Abstract:The bio-sensing activity of fluorescence based nanoprobes is one of the most significant aspects to scrutinize the analytical pursuance in modern security and lateral flow assays. Herein, potent transmogrification of waste cigarette tobacco into fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) has been achieved by calcination approach. The waste transformation to CQDs holds diverse benefits, comprising high quantum yield, low toxicity and scale up synthesis. The developed CQDs were able to identify tetracycline with phenomenal selectivity and sensitivity through fluorescence based method. The sensing mechanism was fully explored using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Molecular docking studies. Governing features comprising tetracycline concentration, interfering studies, and real water analysis on the identification of tetracycline were also investigated. Along with, the prepared CQDs act as colorimetric probe, facilitating the detection of tetracycline with the naked eye. The lateral flow device was constructed for the on-site detection of tetracycline in real water samples. To the best of our knowledge, the present work represents a novel approach to designing CQDs and demonstrates their significant potential for application in anticounterfeiting measures and lateral flow devices. This work holds significant prospective as the prepared CQDs was fully utilized to its maximum usage in developing films and fluorescent anti-counterfeiting applications. Concisely, current work opens up distinctive opportunities for rapid on-site, real-time and visualized surveillance of tetracycline using CQDs prepared with a quite simple green approach.

Abstract:The tobacco epidemic is one of the world greatest public health threats, causing more than 7 million deaths annually, among them more than 6 million are the result of direct tobacco use, while approximately 890,000 are nonsmokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke. [ 1 ] As a result, it is critical to accurately and reliably evaluate environmental tobacco smoke exposure. Due to its longer half-life and better stability than nicotine, cotinine, the main metabolite of nicotine in tobacco, is one of the best biomarkers for evaluating smoking exposure. [ 2 , 3 ] Currently, the methods for determination of cotinine and 3-hydroxycotinine in biological samples in China and overseas include gas chromatography, [ 4 ] high-performance liquid chromatography, [ 5 ] and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). [ 6–9 ] Unfortunately, these methods have certain limitations, such as the complicated sample treatment process, [ 6–8 ] the larger amount of serum, [ 7 , 8 ] the relatively long detection time, and low sensitivity. The goal of this study was to develop a highly efficient, sensitive, accurate, and specific LC-MS/MS method for the detection of cotinine and 3-hydroxycotinine levels in human serum. Additionally, due to the rapid metabolic rate, short half-life, difficult in vivo detection, and strict time limits of nicotine, the metabolites of nicotine, cotinine, and 3-hydroxycotinine, were chosen as the study objects, which are not only representative of the unique components in tobacco but also meet the detection requirements to ensure the detection rate of test results. Similarly, the component ratio in these 2 metabolites is a useful reference for analyzing addiction in smokers.
