Abstract:Hydrate-based solidified natural gas (SNG) technologies provide promising applications in natural gas storage and transportation, CO2 sequestration and desalination, and the enhancement of hydrate formation kinetics under mild conditions is the key to promoting their applications. Here, a nano-promoter of -N(CH3)(3)(+)@PSNS was prepared by emulsion polymerization, and the synergistic effects of nano-promoters and spiral agitation on hydrate formation kinetics were evaluated. Hydrate formation experiments under different pressure and inclined angles were carried out, and the torque of the stirring rod was measured, while the synergistic mechanisms of spiral agitation and nano-promoters in promoting hydrate formation were investigated. It was found that the mass transfer between gas and liquid in the spiral-agitated reactor was enhanced by spiral agitation-induced two-way convection, and this improves hydrate nucleation and initial growth kinetics, while the porous property of hydrate was increased due to the presence of nano-promoters, which enhances hydrate later growth kinetics, and the synergy of them significantly improves the hydration efficiency under mild conditions. In pure water systems, the longest induction time is 7.3 min at a mild condition of 3.8 MPa and 30 r/min, and it is reduced to 5.3 min with the addition of the nano-promoter, suggesting exceptional enhancement of the synergy of spiral agitation and nano-promoters on hydrate nucleation. Hydrate growth kinetics depends on driving forces and inclined angles, and the presence of nano-promoters influences hydrate morphologies, causing hydrate growth kinetics in different inclined angles to be more complicated. With the increase in inclined angles, the two-way convection increases, so enhanced hydrate growth kinetics was anticipated at large inclined angles, and large methane storage capacities were obtained at the inclined angle of 45 degrees in pure water systems. However, the screw conveying ability decreases with the increase in inclined angles, and this is further influenced by complicated hydrate morphologies induced by the nano-promoter, resulting in that extraordinary hydrate growth kinetics was only observed at low inclined angles. For high pressure (5 MPa), hydrate formation is limited by mass transfer, which is significantly enhanced by the two-way convection, giving rise to fast hydrate growth rate. Therefore, large methane storage capacity was also obtained in pure water systems, and this was further improved by hydrate porous property induced by the nano-promoter. Compared with pure water systems, methane storage capacities in the nano-promoter system are 153.25 and 155.03 m(3)/m(3) at the inclined angles of 25 degrees and 35 degrees, which increase by 241.09% and 11.1%, respectively. In contrast, poor hydrate reaction kinetics limits hydrate formation at low pressure (3.8 MPa). Although spiral agitation enhances hydrate growth kinetics at stirring stages, when the agitation is turned off, hydrate formation almost ceases. Fortunately, the nano-promoter enhances hydrate growth kinetics after the agitation is turned off, guaranteeing large methane storage capacities under this mild condition. Methane storage capacities at 3.8 MPa are 107.96 and 140.43 m(3)/m(3) at the inclined angles of 25 degrees and 35 degrees, which increase by 59.16% and 91.74% respectively compared with that in pure water systems. Ultimately, these findings make it possible to synthesize hydrate efficiently under mild conditions, and it is of significance to promote the application of hydrate-based SNG technologies.
