Abstract:Many methods exist for the synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), but precise morphology control allowing the tailoring of core-shell and yolk-shell nanostructures has been elusive, mainly due to poor control of the reaction-diffusion processes. Herein, we propose the precise regulation of the COF generation and decomposition rates and their relationship with the diffusion rate of COF species during the synthesis, which enables a successful preparation of core-shell, yolk-shell, hollow-spherical, and multiple yolk-shell COF structures with tunable sizes ranging from 200 to 1,400 nm Formed COF structures can serve as nanoreactors or nanocontainers, with the shell layer providing molecular-size selectivity determined by the nanopore size demonstrated here using Suzuki coupling reactions with phenylboronic acid, which produce a size-cutoff efficiency for halogenated aromatics approaching 100%. The precise morphology design and control of COF particles and hybrids may help enhance application efficiencies and provide access to new functionalities for COF materials.

Abstract:Chiral recognition and enantioseparation are of paramount importance in various fields, including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and material science. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as promising materials for chiral separation due to their unique structural features and tunable properties. This review provided a comprehensive overview of recent progress in the application of COFs and related innovative materials for chiral separation and recognition. Various strategies were analyzed for the design and synthesis of chiral COFs, including the incorporation of chiral building blocks, post‐synthetic modification, and the integration of chiral selectors. The applications of chiral COFs in chromatographic techniques, membrane separations, and other emerging methods were critically evaluated with the emphasis on their advantages and limitations. Additionally, the review summarized the potential of combining COFs with other nanomaterials, such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and nanoparticles, to enhance chiral recognition and separation performance. The fundamental principles and mechanisms of chiral recognition were discussed, highlighting the role of chiral selectors and their interactions with enantiomers. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives in this field were discussed, providing insights into the development of more efficient and versatile chiral separation systems based on COFs and related materials.

Abstract:There have been breakthroughs in the development of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with tunability of composition, structure, and function, but the synthesis of chiral COFs remains a great challenge. Here we report the construction of two-dimensional COFs with chiral functionalities embedded into the frameworks by imine condensations of enantiopure TADDOL-derived tetraaldehydes with 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane. Powder X-ray diffraction and computer modeling together with pore size distribution analysis show that one COF has a twofold-interpenetrated grid-type network and the other has a non-interpenetrated grid network. After postsynthetic modification of the chiral dihydroxy groups of TADDOL units with Ti(O(i)Pr)4, the materials are efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalysts for asymmetric addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes with high enantioselectivity. The results reported here will greatly expand the scope of materials design and engineering for the creation of new types of functional porous materials.

Abstract:Mimicking cellular transport mechanisms to make solid-state smart nanochannels has long been of great interest for their diverse applications, but it poses a critical synthetic challenge. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are porous crystalline materials with tailor-made nanochannels and hold great potential for ion and molecule transport. We demonstrate here for the first time that 2D COFs possess the necessary merits to be promising solid-state nanochannels for selective transport of amino acids, which are the basis for life. By imine condensations of a C3-symmetric trialdehyde and a mixture of diamines with and without divinyl groups, two vinyl-functionalized 2D COFs are crystallized. Both multivariant COFs afford straight 1D mesoporous channels formed by AA or AB stacking of layered hexagonal networks. After postmodification with chiral β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) via thiol-ene click reactions, the COFs are further fabricated into free-standing mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) that can selectively transport amino acids, as revealed by monitoring not only transmembrane ionic current signature but also concentration changes of permeated substrates. Specially, in the membrane system, the AA stacked COF exhibits higher chiral recognition capability toward histidine enantiomers than the AB stacked COF because of its uniform open channels decorated with β-CD. This work highlights the great potential of COF nanochannels as a platform for accumulating functional groups for selective transport of small molecules and even biomolecules in the solid state.

Abstract:The construction of olefin-linked chiral covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with high crystallinity is highly desirable while remains great challenge due to the poor reversibility of the formation reaction for the olefin linkages during the in situ structural self-healing process. Herein, we successfully synthesized two sets of enantiomeric olefin-linked COFs. The chiral catalytic groups are uniformly distributed on the pore walls of COFs, resulting in the full exposure of catalytic sites to the reactants in asymmetric catalysis. The as-prepared (R)/(S)-CCOF8 exhibits excellent catalytic performance with exceeding 99% enantiomeric excess in the enantioselective electrophilic amination reaction. Moreover, the heterogeneous chiral catalysts are conveniently recycled and could maintain the performance after ten catalytic cycles. Our findings expand the scope to construct stable and crystalline chiral COFs for the asymmetric catalysis.

Abstract:A general and efficient organocatalytic asymmetric polymerization approach for the synthesis of chiral covalent organic frameworks (CCOFs) has been developed. With a chiral 2-methylpyrrolidine catalyst, a series of tris(N-salicylideneamine)-derived β-ketoenamine-CCOFs are directly constructed from prochiral aldehyde- and primary amine-monomers. The adopted aminocatalytic asymmetric Schiff-base condensation herein is performed under ambient conditions with clear green synthetic advantages over the conventional acid-catalysed solvothermal methods. The obtained β-ketoenamine-CCOFs can be further metalated by a solid-state coordination approach, and the resulting CuII @CCOFs can highly promote an asymmetric A3 -coupling reaction. Specifically, a CuII @CCOF@chitosan aerogel was fabricated as a highly efficient fixed-bed model reactor for scaled-up catalysis. The concept of aminocatalytic asymmetric polymerization might open a new way for constructing the CCOFs via asymmetric organocatalysis.

Abstract:Exploring new strategies for construction of chiral covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is of paramount importance yet remains a challenge. Herein, we report the rational design and construction of chiral COFs through a linker decomposition chiral induction (LDCI) strategy. Three pairs of azine-linked chiral COFs are successfully synthesized by the condensation reactions of C3-symmetric 4,4',4''-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tribenzaldehyde (Tz) with flexible chiral dihydrazide linkers derived from malic acid, aspartic acid and tartaric acid, respectively. Remarkably, upon complete or partial decomposition from flexible chiral dihydrazides to hydrazine during COF synthesis, the homochirality of these COFs, originating from the single-handedness conformation of propeller-like Tz cores, is well preserved. Such a stereoselective chiral memory realized via the LDCI strategy is confirmed by time-dependent powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and diffuse reflectance circular dichroism (DRCD). Moreover, the resultant azine-linked chiral COFs are used as the active materials to fabricate photodetectors to directly distinguish circularly polarized light (CPL), showing impressive recognition performances on the identification of left-handed circularly (LHC) and right-handed circularly (RHC) polarized lights. Notably, the residual undecomposed flexible chiral linkers within the COFs are found to be conducive to improving the polarization discrimination ratio.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of crystalline porous polymers in which organic building blocks are covalently and topologically linked to form extended crystalline polygon structures, constituting a new platform for designing π-electronic porous materials. However, COFs are currently synthesised by a few chemical reactions, limiting the access to and exploration of new structures and properties. The development of new reaction systems that avoid such limitations to expand structural diversity is highly desired. Here we report that COFs can be synthesised via a double-stage connection that polymerises various different building blocks into crystalline polygon architectures, leading to the development of a new type of COFs with enhanced structural complexity and diversity. We show that the double-stage approach not only controls the sequence of building blocks but also allows fine engineering of pore size and shape. This strategy is widely applicable to different polymerisation systems to yield hexagonal, tetragonal and rhombus COFs with predesigned pores and π-arrays.
Homochiral Covalent Organic Frameworks with Superhelical Nanostructures Enable Efficient Chirality-Induced Spin Selectivity

Abstract:Despite significant advancements in fabricating covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with diverse morphologies, creating COFs with superhelical nanostructures remains challenging. We report here the controlled synthesis of homochiral superhelical COF nanofibers by manipulating pendent alkyl chain lengths in organic linkers. This approach yields homochiral 3D COFs 13-OR with a 10-fold interpenetrated diamondoid structure (R = H, Me, Et, nPr, nBu) from enantiopure 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL)-based tetraaldehydes and tetraamine. COF-13-OEt exhibits macroscopic chirality as right-handed and left-handed superhelical fibers, whereas others adopt spherical or non-helical morphologies. Time-tracking shows a self-assembly process from non-helical strands to single-stranded helical fibers and intertwined superhelices. Ethoxyl substituents, being of optimal size, balance solvophobic effects and intermolecular interactions, driving the formation of superhelical nanostructures, with handedness determined by BINOL chirality. The superhelical nature of these materials is evident in their chiral recognition and spin-filter properties, showing significantly improved enantiodiscrimination in carbohydrate binding (up to six times higher enantioselectivity) and a remarkable chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect with a 48-51% spin polarization ratio, a feature absent in non-helical analogs.

Abstract:Chiral channels or pores are a fundamental feature of chiral metal-organic frameworks (CMOFs). However, the roles of chiral channels and pores have always been overlooked in enantioselective sensing based on the CMOFs. Aiming at the chiral sensing platforms of enantioselectivity with efficient electrochemical recognition, the L-His, L-Glu, and L-Lys have been introduced into the metal-organic framework (MOF) as CMOFs. Taking advantage of postsynthetic modifications (PSM), the resulting CMOFs (MOF-His/MOF-Glu/MOF-Lys) exhibit chiral channel dependence for different amino acid enantiomers. Ascribed to the introduction of chiral linkers, the nanomaterials with chiral channels of different sizes exhibit electrochemical recognition behaviors for electrochemical recognition of glutamate (Glu) enantiomers, tryptophan (Trp) enantiomers, and phenylalanine (Phe) enantiomers, which are evaluated in detail by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). In addition, ascribed to the regulation of chirality information transmission through introducing chiral molecules of different sizes, the resolved nanomaterials reveal a unique adjustable chiral channel upon the addition of amino acid molecules, leading to passage of amino acid enantiomers of different sizes with excellent recognition efficiency. This work provides not only a design strategy for developing CMOFs with channel tunability but also an idea for the construction of an electrochemical sensing platform.

Abstract:Developing novel chiral stationary phases (CSPs) with versatility is of great importance in enantiomer separation. This study fabricated a dual-chiral covalent organic framework (PA-CA COF) via successive post-synthetic modifications. The chiral trans-1,2-cyclohexanediamine (CA) and (D)-penicillamine (PA) groups were periodically aligned within nanochannels of the COF, allowing selective recognition of enantiomers through intermolecular interactions. It can be a versatile high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) CSP for separating a wide range of enantiomers, including chiral pharmaceutical intermediates and chiral drugs. With separation performance comparable to commercial chiral columns and even greater versatility, the PA-CA COF@SiO2 column held promise for practical applications. Chiral separation results combined with molecular simulation indicated that the mixed mode of PA and CA resulted in the broad separation capability of PA-CA COF. The introduction of the dual-chiral COFs concept opens up a new avenue for chiral recognition and separation, holding great potential for practical enantiomer separation.

Abstract:As highly versatile crystalline porous materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as an ideal platform for developing novel functional materials, attributed to their precise tunability of structure and functionality. Introducing chiral functional units into frameworks produces chiral COFs (CCOFs) with chiral superiorities through chirality conservation and conversion processes. This review summarises recent research progress in CCOFs, including synthetic methods, chiroptical characterisations, and their applications in asymmetric catalysis, chiral separation, and enantioselective recognition and sensing. Challenges and limitations are discussed to uncover future opportunities in CCOF research.
