Abstract:Nowadays, a growing awareness has given to practices focused on the in-depth treatment and decontamination processes on firefighters' personal protective equipment to decrease health risk. Hence, TiO 2 nanoparticles modified Cu-doped BiOBr microflower (BiOBr-Cu 2+ /TiO 2 ) has been devised and used as the effective constituents to construct a type of decontamination agent which can efficiently and deeply eliminate hazardous chemicals. The 3D microflower can be an admirable carrier for the prevention of aggregation and outstanding adsorption, and the construction of heterojunction based on copper-doped strategy and sequential harvesting of light strategy provides enhanced light absorbance and efficient charge separation. The proposed materials nanoparticle-interspersed microflower morphology, enhanced light harvesting ability, excellent transfer of photogenerated carriers, leading to a more effective adsorption and solar-light-driven photocatalytic activity than that of other catalysts. Moreover, the BiOBr-Cu 2+ /TiO 2 composites mixed with different solvents can be used as the decontamination agents for the in-depth treatment of hazardous chemicals under different situations. It is believed that employing heterojunction as the constituents of decontamination agent promises to become an effective feasibility method for the deeply decontamination processes in firefighters' work.

Abstract:Bismuth oxybromide/oxyiodide (Bi4O5BrxI2-x) photocatalysts were successfully fabricated using a facile homogeneous precipitation method at room temperature. The obtained Bi4O5BrxI2-x demonstrated highly enhanced visible-light performances compared with Bi4O5Br2 and Bi4O5I2. The poducts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The DRS analysis shows that the band gap structures of Bi4O5BrxI2-x have been gradually modulated by changing the Br/I molar ratio. The obtained Bi4O5BrxI2-x samples have exhibited efficient photocatalytic activities in decomposing resorcinol, o-phenylphenol, and 4-tert-butylphenol. The Br/I molar ratio has great influence on the activity of the photocatalysts, and Bi4O5Br0.6I1.4 exhibited the best activity which was about 2.77 and 1.80 times higher than that of Bi4O5Br2 and Bi4O5I2, respectively. The degradation intermediates were identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS), and the possible degradation pathway of resorcinol over Bi4O5BrxI2-x photocatalysts was proposed. The strong visible light absorption, high charge separation efficiency, and proper band potentials should be responsible for the excellent activity of Bi4O5BrxI2-x photocatalyst. Trapping experiments using radical scavengers confirmed the generation of O2-, OH, and h+, but only O2- and h+ have played the chief role in removing organic pollutants from water.
Enhanced H2O2 Utilization Efficiency in Fenton-like System for Degradation of Emerging Contaminants: Oxygen Vacancy-Mediated Activation of O2.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is the most commonly used oxidant in advanced oxidation processes for emerging organic contaminant degradation. However, the activation of H2O2 to generate reactive oxygen species is always accompanied by O2 generation resulting in H2O2 waste. Here, we prepare a Ti doped Mn3O4/Fe3O4 ternary catalyst (Ti-Mn3O4/Fe3O4) to create abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs), which yields electron delocalization impacts on enhancing the electrical conductivity, accelerating the activation of O2 to produce H2O2. In Ti-Mn3O4/Fe3O4/H2O2 system, OVs-mediated O2/O2 center dot-/H2O2 redox cycles trigger the activation of locally generated O2, boost the regeneration of O2 center dot-and on site produce H2O2 for replenishment. This leads to a 100% removal of tiamulin in 30 min at an unprecedented H2O2 utilization efficiency of 96.0%, which is 24 folds higher than that with Fe3O4/H2O2. Importantly, further integration of Ti-Mn3O4/Fe3O4 catalysts into membrane filtration ach-ieved high rejections of tiamulin (> 83.9%) from real surface water during a continuous 12-h operation, demonstrating broad pH adaptability, excellent catalytic stability and leaching resistance. This work demon-strates a feasible strategy for developing OVs-rich catalysts for improving H2O2 utilization efficiency via acti-vation of locally generated oxygen during the Haber-Weiss reaction.
The biochar-supported iron-copper bimetallic composite activating oxygen system for simultaneous adsorption and degradation of tetracycline

Abstract:An economical biochar-supported iron-copper bimetallic composite (BC-FeCu) was successfully prepared and used to remove tetracycline (TC) from water. The experiment results expressed that BC-FeCu exhibited higher removal (92.50%) than FeCu (67.30%) under the same condition (pH 4.50, TC concentration 10 mg/L, and catalyst dose 0.05 g/L). Moreover, the TC removal by BC-FeCu constantly increased with the pH value from 4.50 to 9.03. Desorption experiments showed that adsorption and degradation accounted for 26.09% and 73.91% of the total TC removal by BC-FeCu, respectively. N-2 sparging experiments concluded that the degradation led by dissolved oxygen (DO) and the direct degradation by BC-FeCu accounted for 17.02% and 56.89% of the total TC removal, respectively. The existence of O2 center dot(-), center dot OH, O-1(2) was testified by electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis. And O-2 center dot(-) was proved to be the dominating active substance for TC degradation by BC-FeCu through quenching experiments. It could be that the electron transferred from -COOH, -OH and Cu/Cu+ in BC-FeCu to O-2 to form O-2 center dot(-), thus realizing the activation of O-2. Finally, three possible TC degradation ways were presented through the analysis of eight intermediates.
Facile Fabrication of Heterogeneous TiO2/BiOCl Composite with Superior Visible-Light-driven Performance Towards Cr(VI) and Tetracycline

Abstract:Heavy metals and antibiotics are known for their difficulty of removal and enormous harmful intermediates released during degradation as well as the great threat to the health of human beings, which arouses urgent demand for highly efficient photocatalysts as solution. Thus, in this work, TiO2/BiOCl heterogeneous composite was synthesized via a facile and low-cost hydrolysis-precipitation method at room temperature without organic reagent. The characteristic results indicate anatase TiO2 nanoparticles with smaller grain size (around 15 nm) were uniformly dispersed on the surface of BiOCl nanosheets to form the heterogeneous structure. The hybrid catalyst exhibits higher photocatalytic performance for both Cr(VI) and tetracycline, and the synergistic degradation effect is demonstrated in the co-existent system. The superior photoactivity is mainly attributed to the excellent visible light capture capability and effective separation of photogenerated electron-holes pairs. Moreover, the main active radicals for Cr(VI) are photo-induced electrons (e(-)), and that for tetracycline are superoxide radical (center dot O-2(-)) and holes (h(+)). Furthermore, the effect of mass ratio of TiO2 and BiOCl on the photocatalytic performance was discussed and a speculated degradation mechanism was also proposed. In summary, this work would provide significant meaningful guidance for the development of Ti-based composites in the field of wastewater treatment.
Spherical Cu2O-Fe3O4@chitosan Bifunctional Catalyst for Coupled Cr-organic Complex Oxidation and Cr(VI) Capture-Reduction

Abstract:Unlike the removal of chromium (Cr) ions, the efficient treatment of Cr complexes with organic ligands is a challenging issue in wastewater treatment. The generation and accumulation of highly toxic Cr(VI) species should be minimized. In this study, well-dispersed Cu2O and Fe3O4 nanoparticles inlaid in chitosan beads were prepared. This catalyst demonstrated dual functions, i.e., catalytic oxidation of Cr(III)-organic complexes and efficient inhibition of Cr(VI) accumulation in the presence of H2O2. More than 85% of the Cr(III)-organic complexes were removed in a wide pH range and a negligible amount of Cr(VI) remained in solution in the presence of 20 mmol/L H2O2. The synergistic effect of Cu2O, Fe3O4, and the chitosan matrix was the key factor for the ligand disruption and Cr removal. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis were used to determine the underlying mechanism. The results showed that the generated Cu+ species of Cu2O transferred electrons to accelerate the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle during the Fenton reaction, which favored the production of center dot OH radicals. The generated Cr(VI) in the Fenton-like reaction was efficiently adsorbed by chitosan and reduced to Cr(III) by chitosan and Cu2O. The reduced Cr(III) was then incorporated into the surface structure of Fe3O4 and generated a stable complex oxides of Fe and Cr(III). Overall, this paper demonstrated a new method for the treatment of Cr(III)-organic complexes from wastewater.
Highly Dispersed Magnetite Nanoparticles on Biochar with Sulfonation Modification for Simultaneous Removal of Arsenite and Tetracycline from Aqueous Solutions: Performance and Mechanistic Insight

Abstract:The remediation of combined pollution of heavy metals and antibiotics in an aqueous environment remains challenging. Through magnetite (Fe3O4) dispersion followed by sulfonation modification, we report a novel bifunctional biochar-based composite (labeled Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H) for simultaneous removal of arsenite (As(III)) and tetracycline (TC) in aqueous solutions. Batch experiments in single-solute systems show that Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H exhibits faster kinetic and higher adsorption capacity than raw biochar, Fe3O4, and magnetite-dispersed biochar (Fe3O4@BC), thus leading to enhanced removal efficiency for either As(III) or TC. More notably, Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H can simultaneously remove above 85% of As(III) and TC compared with less than 50% removal of As(III) and TC by biochar, Fe3O4, and Fe3O4@BC. Combining the spectroscopic analyses, the co-removal process of As(III) and TC indicates a unique mechanism with two-stage reactions, which involves As(III) redox transformation in the first stage and TC adsorption in the second stage. This study proposes a new strategy to design biochar-based composites for the decontamination of As(III) and TC. Overall, the excellent performance and stability of Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H show its substantial potential as a low-cost, highly efficient, and eco-friendly material for the remediation of combined pollution in water.

Abstract:Since the COVID-19 pandemic, efforts in the field of surface decontamination have been redoubled. Finding innovative self-cleaning devices has become a challenge, and several solutions have been proposed in the market in recent years. In this work, an optimized powder/suspension plasma spray process at atmospheric pressure, using a Triplex Pro 210TM torch, is implemented to produce Cu-TiO2 surface coatings on stainless steel. The purpose is to investigate the potential improvement of antibacterial efficacy by the reactive surface species generated from TiO2 photoactivity under irradiation. A water-based suspension, prepared with AnalaR NORMAPURTM TiO2, is used as a precursor to incorporate the photocatalyst into an antibacterial copper matrix. Surface antibacterial tests according to ASTM 2180 standards were performed, and experiments were performed in treated contaminated water. Sub-stoichiometric blue TiO2 coatings showed complete bacterial elimination after 90 min of visible light irradiation, and Cu-TiO2 surface coatings were even able to disinfect the surfaces under white light, making the application interesting for bacterial destruction under natural illumination. These materials are also intended for application in water treatment, including both pathogens and chemical micropollutants, which is a pressing issue facing many countries today.

Fe-Cu bimetal metal-organic framework for efficient decontamination via Fenton-like process: Synthesis, performance and mechanism

Abstract:Constructing Fe-Cu bimetal catalysts is an efficient strategy to promote Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle, whereas there is still a long way to go before fully understanding the role of the Cu in the catalysts. Herein, a new Fe-MOF namely BUC-96(Fe) was fabricated from FeSO4·7H2O, 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy) and 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (H4dhtp) by both hydrothermal reaction and microwave-assisted method. Also, bimetal BUC-96(FeCu-x) were obtained when the CuSO4 was added into the system identical to the synthesis process of BUC-96(Fe). Series BUC-96 MOFs showed good organics elimination performance via Fenton-like process, where 88.1% (k = 0.0672 min-1) of chloroquine phosphate (CQ, 20 mg/L) was decomposed over pristine BUC-96(Fe) within 30 min. Interestingly, nearly 100% CQ was degraded over BUC-96(FeCu-5) as catalyst under the identical conditions within 5 min, whose reaction rate (1.3527 min-1) was 20.1-fold higher than that of BUC-96. Additionally, BUC-96(FeCu-5) exhibited excellent Fenton-like oxidation degradation performance for 10 selected emerging organic pollutants. The reaction mechanism was studied in detail by experiments, and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The results revealed that the introduced Cu not only accelerated Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycles, hydroxyl radical (·OH) generation, electron transfer, but also lowered H2O2 dissociated energy barrier. This work advanced the bimetal MOFs construction and application in wastewater treatment via Fenton-like process.
Surface boric acid modification promoted Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle and H2O2 activation for facilitating Fenton degradation performance of Bi2Fe4O9

Abstract:Boric acid (H3BO3) modified Bi2Fe4O9 (H3BO3@Bi2Fe4O9, BBFO) materials were prepared by surface H3BO3 treatment on Bi2Fe4O9 (BFO) employing mechanical ball milling method. XPS analysis and FT-IR spectra demonstrates that H3BO3 was successfully fastened on BFO surface through intense friction and collision between mixed powder (H3BO3 and BFO) and abrasive. And EPR result illustrates that the more abundant oxygen vacancy (OVs) has been introduced into BFO surface in H3BO3 modification process. The Fenton degradation rate for oxytetracycline (OTC) of BBFO-2 materials reaches 75.0 % within 60 min, which is 21.8 % higher than that of BFO treated by ball milling process without H3BO3 modification (HBFO). And the H2O2 utilization rate (23.4 %) of BBFO-2 materials is higher than that of HBFO (7.6 %), which ascribes to the H3BO3 modification and the introduction of abundant OVs by the surface electrons accumulation and transfer for strengthening the Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle and H2O2 decomposition. The possible degradation pathways and Fenton reaction mechanism was speculated by ESR and HPLC-MS analysis. The manuscript provides a scientific reference and theoretical basis for investigating the preparation and enhancement mechanism of surface modification strategy for Fe-based Fenton catalysts.

Efficient Removal of Organic Contaminants in CuS-Mediated Solid-Liquid-Interfacial Fenton-Like System: Role of Bimetallic Cycle and Sulfur Species

Abstract:The conventional Fenton-like system (Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 ) is severely limited by the inferior activity of Fe(III) on H 2 O 2 activation to produce highly active species and the sluggish regeneration rate of Fe(II). This work significantly enhanced the oxidative breakdown of the target organic contaminant bisphenol A (BPA) by Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 by introducing cheap CuS at a low dose of 50 mg/L. The BPA removal (20 mg/L) in CuS/Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 system reached 89.5% within 30 min under the optimal conditions: CuS dosage 50 mg/L, Fe(III) concentration 0.05 mM, H 2 O 2 concentration 0.5 mM and pH 5.6. Compared to CuS/H 2 O 2 and Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 systems, the reaction constants had a 47- and 12.3-fold enhancement, respectively. Even compared with the conventional Fe(II)/H 2 O 2 system, the kinetic constant also increased more than twice, further confirming the distinctive superiority of constructed system. Element species change analyses showed that Fe(III) in solution was adsorbed onto the CuS surface, and then Fe(III) was rapidly reduced by Cu(I) in the CuS lattice. Combining CuS and Fe(III) (in-situ formed CuS-Fe(III) composite) created a robust co-effect on the activation of H 2 O 2 . Also, S(-II) and its derivatives, e.g., S n 2- and S 0 (as an electron donor), could quickly reduce Cu(II) to Cu(I) and ultimately oxidize to the harmless product SO 4 2- . Notably, a mere 50 μM of Fe(III) was sufficient to maintain enough regenerated Fe(II) to effectively activate H 2 O 2 in CuS/Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 system. In addition, such a system achieved a broad range of pH applications and was more suitable for real wastewater containing anions and natural organic matter. Scavenging tests, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and probes further verified the critical role of •OH. This work provides a new approach to solving the problems of Fenton systems through a solid-liquid-interfacial system design and exhibits considerable application potential in wastewater decontamination.

Abstract:Sustained generation of reactive oxygen species for aquatic decontamination is desired, but the strategies aiming at this goal usually involve tremendous input of chemicals or energy, which for practical purpose have hindered their implementation. Here we propose a very simple approach for degrading organic pollutants based on copper doped sodium bismuthate (CSB), in which reactive oxygen species can be continuously generated requiring no irradiation or other chemicals. The material was easily prepared by coprecipitation of NaBiO3·nH2O and Cu(NO3)2. Two stages of cyclic degradation of organic pollutant in sequence by the same CSB powder, alone with series of characterization measurements and control experiments were designed. CSB mediated reaction proceeds via two distinct mechanisms viz. direct oxidation and catalytic oxidation, each involving different primary reactive species and resulting in different product profiles. Direct oxidation occurs accompanied by the structural transformation of CSB involving singlet oxygen, originated from lattice oxygen, as the responsible species, while catalytic oxidation employs dissolved oxygen to primarily yield superoxide radical owing to the presence of oxygen vacancy. Our findings provide novel insights into the direct and catalytic oxidative activity of CSB, and suggest a based-on approach for simple, efficient and sustained generation of reactive species for water treatment.
Preparation and characterization of BiOBr/CuFe2O4 composite catalyst and constitute photo-Fenton system for degradation of polyacrylamide under visible light

Abstract:A simple hydrothermal synthesis method was employed to fabricate a BiOBr/CuFe2O4 composite photo-Fenton catalyst with visible light response in this study. The effects of the CuFe2O4 dosage, the concentration of polyacrylamide (PAM), the reaction time, the pH of the initial solution and the light source on the reaction results were investigated. Under the visible light, ultraviolet light and sunlight irradiation, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate of PAM (250 mg/L) reached 62.43%, 69.21%, 65.17%, respectively. Simultaneously, the structure, morphology and optical properties were characterized. The improved activity of BiOBr/CuFe2O4 can be attributed to formation of Z-type heterojunction, synergistic effect of photocatalysis and Fenton catalysis. The free radical capture experiments show that •O2 −, h+ and •OH are all active species of BiOBr/CuFe2O4 for decomposing PAM in photo-Fenton reactions. Finally, a possible electron transfer mechanism was proposed through the fitting of Mott-Schottky curve and Taut-plot curves.

Efficient photocatalytic degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid by bismuth nanoparticle modified titanium dioxide

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is potentially toxic and exceptionally stable attributed to its robust CF bond, which is hard to be removed by UV/TiO2 systems. In this research, bismuth nanoparticle (Bi NP) modified titanium oxides (Bi/TiO2) were synthesized by a simple photochemical deposition-calcination method and were applied as photocatalysts for the first time to degrade PFOA. The removal rate of 50 mg/L PFOA reached 99.3 % with 58.6 % defluorination rate after 30 min of irradiation via a mercury lamp. Bi/TiO2 exhibited superior performance in PFOA degradation compared to commercial photocatalysts (TiO2, Ga2O3, Bi2O3 and In2O3). In addition, Bi/TiO2 showed high degradation activity under actual sunlight, achieved 100 % removal rate and 59.3 % defluorination rate within 2 h. Bi NPs increase the light trapping ability of Bi/TiO2 and promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs via local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, which results in more photogenerated holes (h+) and hydroxyl radicals (OH). Combined with DFT calculations and intermediate detections, the degradation reaction is initiated from the oxidation of the PFOA carboxyl group via h+, followed by the loss of the CF2 unit step by step with the participation of OH. This work presents a novel approach for the practical implementation of TiO2-based photocatalysts to achieve highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs).
Ultrafast degradation of emerging organic pollutants via activation of peroxymonosulfate over Fe3C/Fe@N-C-x: Singlet oxygen evolution and electron-transfer mechanisms

Abstract:Fe3C/Fe decorated N-doped magnetic carbon materials (denoted as Fe3C/Fe@N-C-x) were successfully fabricated via facile one-pot calcination of MIL-88B(Fe) with a green precursor of melamine. Benefiting from the co-existence of sp2-hybridized C–π moieties, oxygen-containing groups (CO and O–CO), N-doping species and ferreous nanoparticles (FNPs), the as-obtained Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 exhibited excellent activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for ultrafast elimination of various emerging organic contaminants with high mineralization capacities. Inspired by the unique nanotube morphology and encapsulation of FNPs, the Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 possessed trace Fe leaching and can be magnetically separated for an easy recycling. Combining with competitive radical scavenging tests, electron spin resonance (ESR), electrochemical analysis and in-situ Raman spectra, the singlet oxygen (1O2) and electron-transfer can be accounted for the organic pollutant removal. Because of that, the Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 exhibited good resistance to inorganic anions and natural organic matters (NOMs). It was fascinating that Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 achieved satisfactory treatment efficiency for real pharmaceutical wastewater.

Enhanced Mass Transfer of Ozone and Emerging Pollutants through a Gas-Solid-Liquid Reaction Interface for Efficient Water Decontamination

Abstract:Ozone (O3), as an environmentally friendly oxidant, is widely used to remove emerging pollutants and ensure the safety of the water supply, whereas the restricted accessibility of O3 and limited collision frequency between pollutants and O3 will inevitably reduce the ozonation efficiency. To promote the chemical reactions between O3 and target pollutants, here we developed a novel gas-solid-liquid reaction interface dominated triphase ozonation system using a functional hydrophobic membrane with an adsorption layer as the O3 distributor and place where chemical reactions occurred. In the triphase system, the functional hydrophobic membrane simultaneously improved the interface adsorption performance of emerging pollutants and the access pathway of O3, leading to a marked enhancement of interfacial pollutant concentration and O3 levels. These synergistic qualities result in high ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal efficiency (94.39%) and fast apparent reaction rate constant (kapp, 2.75 × 10-2 min-1) versus a traditional O3 process (41.82% and 0.48 × 10-2 min-1, respectively). In addition, this triphase system was an advanced oxidation process involving radical participation and showed excellent degradation performance of multiple emerging pollutants. Our findings highlight the importance of gas-solid-liquid triphase reaction interface design and provide new insight into the efficient removal of emerging pollutants by the ozonation process.

Abstract:It is important to investigate whether combining two modification strategies has a synergistic effect on the activity of photocatalysts. In this manuscript, Fe-doped BiOBr/Bi2WO6 heterojunctions were synthesized by a one-pot solvothermal method, and excellent photocatalytic performance was obtained for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) in water without the addition of surfactant. Combining experiments and characterization, the synergistic effect between Fe ion doping and the BiOBr/Bi2WO6 heterojunction was elucidated. The Fe/BiOBr/Bi2WO6 composite photocatalyst had a beneficial void structure, enhanced visible light response, and could inhibit the recombination of photogenerated support well, which improved the photocatalytic activity. The presented experiments demonstrate that Fe/BiOBr/Bi2WO6 removes 97% of TCH from aqueous solution, while pure BiOBr and Bi2WO6 only remove 56% and 65% of TCH, respectively. Finally, the separation and transfer mechanisms of photoexcited carriers were determined in conjunction with the experimental results. This study provides a new direction for the design of efficient photocatalysts through the use of a dual co-modification strategy.

Plant polyphenol surfactant construction with strong surface activity and chelation properties as efficient decontamination of UO22+ on cotton fabric

Abstract:Chemically synthesized surfactants have promising applications in the treatment of uranium, however, their hazardous environmental effects, non-biodegradability, and numerous drawbacks prevent them from being widely used in practice. Herein, we successfully synthesized a green chelating and foaming integrated surfactant (BTBS) by Mannich reaction and acylation of bayberry tannin for the effective removal of UO22+ from aqueous environments or solid surfaces. The as-prepared surfactant was systematically characterized by FT-IR, showing that the hydrophobic groups were successfully grafted onto tannin. The modified material showed better foaming and emulsifying properties, which proved this method could improve the amphiphilicity of tannin. Moreover, for the first time, a foam fractionation method in conjunction with a tannin-based surfactant was applied for UO22+ removal from water. This surfactant was used as a co-surfactant and could readily remove 90 % of UO22+ (20 mg L-1) from water. The removal of UO22+ could be completed in a short time (30 min), and the maximum adsorption capacity was determined as 175.9 mg g-1. This surfactant can also be used for efficient decontamination of uranium-contaminated cotton cloth with a high removal rate of 94.55 %. In addition, the mechanism studies show that the adsorption of BTBS for UO22+ can be mainly attributed to a chelating mechanism between UO22+ and the adjacent phenolic hydroxyls. The novel biomass-derived BTBS with advantages such as high capture capacity, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness suggests that it plays an important role in the remediation of radionuclide pollution.

Abstract:Bismuth oxyhalide (BiOX, X=Cl, Br, I) species with tunable microstructures, abundant surface active centres, excellent electrical conductivity, and good photocatalytic properties have become important basic materials in the field of photocatalysis. However, pure BiOX and BiOX materials modified with a single strategy have limited photocatalytic performance due to the rapid recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Therefore, combining two different modification strategies to synergistically improve the photocatalyst activity of BiOX should be investigated. In this manuscript, iron-doped BiOBr/BiOI heterojunctions were synthesised using a one-pot solvothermal method for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) in water. The synergistic effect between iron ion doping and BiOBr/BiOI heterojunction formation was elucidated by combining photocatalytic experiments and material characterisation. The Fe/BiOBr/BiOI composite photocatalyst possessed a good bandgap structure, which enhanced its visible light response and effectively suppressed the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Thus, photocatalytic activity was improved. Photocatalytic degradation experiments showed that Fe/BiOBr/BiOI effectively removed TCH from aqueous solution under visible light irradiation, with the removal rate reaching 99 % after 60 min of visible light irradiation. In addition, Fe/BiOBr/BiOI still possessed good photocatalytic activity after six recovery-cycling experiments, demonstrating its stability. Finally, the separation of photoexcited carriers and the doping mechanism of the iron ions were determined by combining the experimental results and characterisation data. This study provides a new direction for designing efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:In this study, we developed a highly active floatable photocatalyst by incorporating BiOCl/BiOBr heterojunctions with abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs) onto fly ash cenospheres (FACs) composites, aiming to enhance the efficiency of tetracycline (TC) removal. The physicochemical properties of resulting composites were analyzed using various characterization techniques. The findings demonstrated the uniform anchoring of nanosheet-array-like BiOCl, BiOBr, or BiOCl/BiOBr heterojunctions on the surface of FACs. Intriguingly, the BiOCl/BiOBr heterojunctions exhibited an increased content of OVs compared to BiOCl and BiOBr alone. The degradation experiments of TC revealed that the BiOCl/ composites displayed optimal photodegradability, which was further enhanced by the assistance of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Furthermore, through active species capture experiments and ESR analysis, we proposed a synergistic reactive mechanism that differed from single photocatalytic processes and traditional PMS activation. Active species such as h + , 1 O 2 , ·O 2 - , ·OH and ·SO 4 - were found to participate in the synergistic process of TC degradation, in which the presence of PMS promoted the production of ·O 2 - via OVs active sites instead of inhibition. Importantly, the immobilized BiOCl/ composites exhibited floatability on the water surface and were readily excited by visible light, making them suitable for reuse and practical applications. This study presents an innovative approach for designing recyclable photocatalysts and achieving efficient wastewater treatment with the assistance of PMS.
