Abstract:The demand for nursing staff, ancillary staff, and other forms of ancillary care for older adults with Alzheimer’s and other dementias has been steadily increasing over the past few years. To augment this high demand for caregivers, socially assistive robots have been developed to provide cognitive, physical, and social stimuli as well as perform other necessary tasks to alleviate the burden on existing caregivers. This literature review, which includes 62 articles, provides an insight into the current capabilities and limitations of these social robots, as well as how users perceived the robots and what aspects of their design were either pleasing or displeasing. The challenges of future research and design were identified within these articles as well. Using these three key points, two major goals for the future direction of research into these social robots were suggested, which can be used to outline further development in this field.
