Abstract:Abstract Multi-spectral imaging is one of the fundamental tools characterizing the constituent energy of scene radiation, and can help non-destructive material identification and quantification. A compact multi-spectral video camera covering a large field of view with high resolution can be of wide applications in scientific discoveries and industrial inspections. However, current multi-spectral video cameras cannot scale up beyond megapixel resolution due to physical constraints from optical design and complexity of reconstruction algorithm. In order to circumvent above issues, we propose a tens-of-megapixel handheld multi-spectral videography approach (THETA) , with a proof-of-concept camera achieving 65-megapixel videography of 12 wavebands within visible light range. The high performance is brought by multiple novel designs in our approach: (i) We propose an imaging scheme to fabricate a thin mask performing multiplexed compressive encoding of spatio-spectral data cube using conventional film photography. (ii) A fiber optic plate is introduced for building a compact prototype supporting pixel-wise encoding supporting large space-bandwidth product imaging system. (iii) A deep network based reconstruction algorithm is adopted for large scale multi-spectral data decoding, with the coding pattern specially designed to facilitate high efficient coarse-to-fine model training. Experimentally, we demonstrate the advantageous and wide applications of THETA on outdoor imaging of large macroscopic scenes.
