Abstract:Fertilizers provide nutrients needed for fruit yield and quality, which are also determined by farming practices and climatic conditions. However, there has been no systematic synthesis of the effects of fertilization on peach yield and quality. This paper provides the first meta-analysis of fertilization of peach for yield and quality in China, based on 1,419 data pairs from 71 published reports. This analysis showed fertilizer application increased peach yield (26.5%), fruit weight (14.5%), transverse diameter (4.2%), longitudinal diameter (4.8%), soluble solids (9.1%), total sugar (19.5%), soluble sugar (6.4%), sugar-acid ratio (25.8%), vitamin C concentration (16.1%) and fruit firmness (6.9%), but decreased titratable acid (8.3%). However, responses of peach yield and quality to fertilizer application varied among 11 subgroups including fertilizer type and rate, experiment duration, fertilizer application time, peach type, tree age and planting density, mean annual temperature and precipitation. Based on an investigation administering 12,600 field questionnaires and the linear-plus-plateau model, the optimum nitrogen fertilizer rates of peach yield were estimated at 547, 447, 225 and 367 kg ha-1 in central, northern and southwestern China, and the Yangtze River Basin, respectively. This study highlights the importance of rational fertilizer practices and climatic condition for peach yield and quality in China.
