Abstract:Human beings are constantly exposed to two types of uncertainty situations, risk and ambiguity. Neuroscientific studies suggest that the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and the orbital frontal cortex (OFC) play significant roles in human decision making under uncertainty. We applied the transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) device to modulate the activity of participants' DLPFC and OFC separately, comparing the causal relationships between people's behaviors and the activity of the corresponding brain cortex when confronted with situations of risk and ambiguity. Our experiment employed a pre-post design and a risk/ambiguity decision-making task, from which we could calculate the preferences via an estimation model. We found evidences that modulating the activity of the DLPFC using right anodal/left cathodal tDCS significantly enhanced the participants' preferences for risk, whereas modulating the activity of the OFC with right anodal/left cathodal tDCS significantly decreased the participants' preferences for ambiguity. The reverse effects were also observed in the reversed tDCS treatments on the two areas. Our results suggest that decision-making processes under risk and ambiguity are complicated and may be encoded in two distinct circuits in our brains as the DLPFC primarily impacts decisions under risk whereas the OFC affects ambiguity.

Abstract:The human brain is highly plastic. Cognitive training is usually used to modify functional connectivity of brain networks. Moreover, the structures of brain networks may determine its dynamic behavior which is related to human cognitive abilities. To study the effect of functional connectivity on the brain dynamics, the dynamic model based on functional connections of the brain and the Hindmarsh-Rose model is utilized in this work. The resting-state fMRI data from the experimental group undergoing abacus-based mental calculation (AMC) training and from the control group are used to construct the functional brain networks. The dynamic behavior of brain at the resting and task states for the AMC group and the control group are simulated with the above-mentioned dynamic model. In the resting state, there are the differences of brain activation between the AMC group and the control group, and more brain regions are inspired in the AMC group. A stimulus with sinusoidal signals to brain networks is introduced to simulate the brain dynamics in the task states. The dynamic characteristics are extracted by the excitation rates, the response intensities and the state distributions. The change in the functional connectivity of brain networks with the AMC training would in turn improve the brain response to external stimulus, and make the brain more efficient in processing tasks.

Abstract:Human brain oscillatory activity was analysed in the electroencephalographic theta frequency range (4-7 Hz) while subjects executed complex sequential finger movements with varying task difficulty and memory load. Local frontal-midline theta activity was associated with the general level of cognitive demand, with the highest amplitudes in the most demanding condition. Using low-resolution electromagnetic tomography analysis (LORETA), this theta activity was localized in the anterior cingulate gyrus including the cingulate motor area. These results suggest that local theta activity in the anterior cingulate gyrus represents correlates of an attentional system that allocate cognitive resources. In addition, interregional connectivity in the theta frequency range was modulated by memory-related executive functions independently of task difficulty. Connectivity analyses revealed a more distributed long-range network including frontal and parietal cortices during execution of novel compared with well-trained finger movement sequences. Thus, these results are compatible with a model in which theta long-range coupling indicates integration of sensory information into executive control components of complex motor behaviour.

Abstract:Delaying gratification in value-based decision making is canonically related to activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), but past research neglected that the dlPFC is part of a larger frontoparietal network. It is therefore unknown whether the dlPFC causally implements delay of gratification in concert with posterior parts of the frontoparietal network rather than in isolation. Here, we addressed this gap by testing the effects of frontoparietal theta synchronization and desynchronization on impulsive decision making using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). Healthy participants performed an intertemporal choice task and a 3-back working memory task while left frontal and parietal cortices were stimulated with a 5 Hz theta frequency at in-phase (synchronization), anti-phase (desynchronization), or sham tACS. We found frontoparietal theta coupling to improve working memory performance, while in the decision task desynchronization was associated with more impulsive choices and stronger hyperbolic discounting of future rewards. Overall, our findings overcome the past focus of the dlPFC in isolation and show that patient decision making causally relies on synchronous activation in a frontoparietal network related to working memory.
