Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have displayed huge potential in inexpensive, efficient, and clean solar energy-technology. To achieve highly efficient DSSCs, a series of D -n-A organic dyes were designed and their optoelectrical properties were calculated by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). Compared with ZL003, ZS1 designed by introducing the triple bond between donor and n bridge, has higher conjugation, narrower HOMO-LUMO bandgap, and extended ab-sorption spectra. Then five new organic dyes were designed by substituting benzothiadiazole part of ZS1 with five electron-deficient heterocycles. The designed dyes have more conjugated structure, which leads to stronger light harvesting ability with the absorption spectra expanding to the near infrared region, the maximum absorption wavelength red shifting 78 nm similar to 448 nm and light harvesting efficiency (LHE) curve broadening obviously. The intermolecular electron transfer (IET) rate of the design dye is much faster than that of ZL003, over 85.3% of electrons in the design dye have been injected into TiO2 within 200 fs. Especially, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of BBTD, BTTD and BZOD is more than 25.7%, mainly re-flected in the obvious jump of the theoretical short current density (Jpred . sc ) by more than 68%. Therefore, the design dyes have a good application prospect. We believe that this work could provide theoretical guidance for the design of potential organic sensitizers in highly efficient DSSCs.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Spontaneous photo-charge (SP) generation within the non-fullerene (NFA) bulk helps avoid exciton (EX) related loss as compared to the traditional heterojunction route in organic solar cells (OSCs). Unfortunately, the promising SP utilization attracts little attention at this time due to the lack of knowledge on its specific contribution to the photovoltaic performance and rational optimization in high-efficiency devices. To fill the gap, the NFAs' SP characteristics are related with their photocurrent loss and power conversion efficiency (PCE) in state-of-the-art materials. Though higher SP population is good for efficient EX utilization, it simultaneously acts as an additional photo-charge recombination channel. The former can be further enhanced by increasing the NFAs' crystallinity with preferred lamellar growth, and the latter can be suppressed via electric doping. With the aid of the two-step optimization strategy, the total photocurrent loss is reduced from 14.4% to 4.8%, accompanying with PCE increment from 16.9% to 18.5%. The SP utilization strategy is finally applied in the semitransparent OSCs (ST-OSCs), due to its less heterojunction area sensitive photo-charge generation characteristic. A light utilization efficiency (LUE) is then increased from 3.21% to 3.77%. The findings highlight the pursue of efficient SP utilization as a new design philosophy in future OSCs' progresses. The double-side roles of spontaneously formed photo-charges are deconvoluted with feasible optimization strategy. A semitransparent device application in purpose of maximizing the light utilization efficiency is showcased. image

Abstract:Charge transport of organic semiconductors remains as one of the performance bottlenecks for organic optoelectronics, especially for organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, we demonstrate that Lewis base anion doping allows effectively modulating the charge transport capabilities of a variety of electron acceptors and the corresponding optoelectronic devices. It has enabled power conversion efficiencies of 18.16% for OSCs bearing chemical dopants in active layers. We have proven that the controllable n-doping of non-fullerene acceptors is accomplished via the solid-state anion-induced electron transfer, which originally remains dormant in the solution of Lewis base anion and organic semiconductor. Hence, Lewis base anion doping presents advantages for the solution-processing of dopant/organic semiconductor mixtures. Overall, this work provides an effective, yet feasible approach for doping solution-processed semiconductors for high-performance optoelectronics.

Abstract:Due to the attraction of optimizing the electronic structure beyond chemical synthesis, molecular doping has recently aroused wide interest in the field of organic solar cells. However, the selection of limited dopants confines its successful application. Inspired by the Lewis base characteristics of the photovoltaic materials, the Lewis acid as novel dopant is introduced in organic solar cells. In both fullerene and nonfullerene based blends, Lewis acid doping leads to increased photovoltaic performance. Detailed experiments reveal that Lewis acid doping has a synergistic effect on modifying the polymer's electronic properties and the acceptor's nanostructure even at low doping concentration, and these are simultaneously responsible for the device improvements. Based on the mechanism studies, it is proposed that the Lewis acid‐doped polymers anions produce induced dipole on the acceptor, this increases the intermolecular interaction and facilitates the morphology optimization. It is believed that the synergistic effect by Lewis acid doping greatly expands the application of doped organic solar cells, in concert with other existing methods to yield higher efficiency values.

Abstract:The semitransparent and colorful properties of organic solar cells (OSCs) attract intensive academic interests due to their potential application in building integrated photovoltaics, wearable electronics, and so forth. The most straightforward and effective method to tune these optical properties is varying the componential ratio in the blend film. However, the increase in device transmittance inevitably sacrifices the photovoltaic performance because of severe carrier recombination that originates from discontinuous charge-transport networks in the blend film. Herein, a strategy is proposed via the molecular-doping strategy to overcome these shortcomings. It is discovered that p-doping is able to release the trapped holes in segregated polymer domains leading to short-circuit current enhancement, while n-doping is more effective to fill the bandgap states producing a higher fill factor. More importantly, either type of doping improves the photovoltaic performance in the semitransparent photovoltaic devices. These discoveries provide a new pathway to breaking the compromise between the photovoltaic performance and optical transmittance in semitransparent OSCs, and hold promise for their future commercialization.

Abstract:In addition to a high power conversion efficiency, ambient stability is another impact factor for the successful commercialization of organic solar cells (OSCs). Understanding the role of photovoltaic materials is the key to address this challenge, but no such studies have been systematically performed on non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs). In this work, we firstly investigate the role of NFA photo-oxidation in device degradation. Relevant investigation of physical dynamics underlines the effects on the device performance for NFA photo-oxidation acting as trap states in exposed blends. In addition, taking ITIC as an example, we shed some light on the possible mechanisms of NFA photo-oxidation, which cannot be eliminated by relevant strategies and principles of material design. These results drive us to further investigate the photobleaching rates of thirty-three NFAs, including fused-ring electron acceptors and perylene diimide acceptor derivatives. Surprisingly, most of them show a higher optical density loss as compared to their fullerene-based counterparts. In view of relevant comparative analysis in the Discussion section, we further propose some design strategies to improve the photo-oxidation stability of NFAs. More importantly, we also find a stabilizer (namely nickel chelate S6) that can effectively suppress the photo-oxidation of NFAs and their blends and thus improve the ambient stability of OSCs.
How to optimize the interface between photosensitizers and TiO2 nanocrystals with molecular engineering to enhance performances of dye-sensitized solar cells?

Abstract:In this work, the interfacial properties of a series of metal-free organic naphthodithienothiophene (NDTT)-based photosensitizers adsorbed on TiO2 surfaces were investigated by a combination of ab initio calculations and experimental measurements. The calculations and experiments reveal that, due to the efficient charge transfer from the adsorbed dyes to TiO2 nano-crystal surface, there is a shift upwards for the energy levels of dyes and a shift downwards for the conduction band of surface TiO2, and the bandgaps for both of them are also reduced. Such electronic level alignments at the interface would lead to increased light absorption range by adsorbed dyes, increased driving force for charge injection, but reduced open-circuit potential (Voc). More interestingly, we found that molecule engineering of the donor group and introducing additional electron-withdrawing unit have little effect on the electronic level alignments at the interface (as bandgaps of the dyes adsorbed on TiO2 surfaces become approximately identical when compared with those of the dyes measured in solution), but they can affect the steric effect and the charge separation at the interface to tune Voc and the short-circuit current density (Jsc) effectively. All these findings suggest that optimizing the interfacial properties of dyes adsorbed on TiO2 surfaces by synchronously modifying "steric effects" of dye molecules anchored on TiO2 and "charge transfer and separation properties" at the interfaces is important to construct efficient dye-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract:Electronic doping of conjugated semiconductor plays a critical role in the fabrication of high efficiency organic optoelectronic devices. Here, we report an organic solar cell (OSC) by doping n-type DMBI-BDZC into one host binary bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photoactive layer comprised of a polymer donor PM6 and a nonfullerene acceptor Y6. The resulting champion device yields a significantly improved power conversion efficiency from 17.17% to 18.33% with an impressive fill factor of 80.20%. It is found that the electrically doped photoactive layer exhibits enhanced and balanced charge carrier mobilities, more effective exciton dissociation, longer carrier lifetime, and suppressed charge recombination with smaller energy loss. The dopant molecule DMBI-BDZC also act as a surface morphology modifier of the photoactive layer with enhanced charge transport. This work demonstrates that manipulation of charge transport via adding a low concentration dopant into photoactive layer is a promising approach for further improvement of BHJ OSC performance.

Abstract:In this work, a new A-D-A type non-fullerene electron acceptor, DF-PCNC, which possesses an electron-donating (D) core constructed by linking a 2,5-difluorobenzene ring with two cyclopentadithiophene moieties and two electron-accepting (A) end-groups of 2-(3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalen-1-ylidene)malononitrile (NC), is designed and synthesized. Because of the extension of the pi-conjugation system, DF-PCNC shows stronger and more red-shifted absorption peaks while compared to those of its counterpart, DF-PCIC, which has the same D core but smaller A terminals of 2-(3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-ylidene)malononitrile (IC). Furthermore, NC groups can enhance the intermolecular pi-pi stacking of DF-PCNC in the condensed state. Thus, when it is blended with a polymer donor, PBDB-T, to fabricate organic solar cells (OSCs), good morphologies of the blended films are achieved through appropriate optimizations: both donor and acceptor form highly crystalline phase-separation domains with appropriate nanoscaled sizes, which is beneficial to charge generation and transport in OSCs. As a result, the short-circuit current density (J(SC)) of the PBDB-T:DF-PCNC device is increased by 16% compared with that of the PBDB-T:DF-PCIC one, and a high fill factor (FF) of 72.62% is maintained, leading to a better power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.63%, which is the highest value for OSCs based on non-fullerene acceptors adopting decreased fused-ring D cores to date.
The charge-transfer property and the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells of nitrogen doped zinc oxide

Abstract:In this study two methods, namely the solution and annealing methods, were used to prepare nitrogen-doped ZnO. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was performed to identify the composition and chemical states of N-doped ZnO. The N doping by the solution method was found to effectively decrease the acceptor effects. Surface photovoltage measurements (SPS) revealed a redshift of the threshold wavelength for the N-doped ZnO. And the recombination of photoinduced electron–hole pairs in this semiconductor material was obviously suppressed. The N-doped ZnO (solution method) exhibits the best performances among all the materials, even superior to N-doped ZnO (annealing method). Its Jsc and η values (9.35mA/cm2 and 2.64%) have enhanced by several times compared with un-doped ZnO (Jsc, 2.85mA/cm2; η, 0.67%). The overall conversion efficiency of ZnO-based dye-sensitized solar cells was successfully improved by the N doping.

Abstract:Charge recombination has always been the main factor restricting the performance improvement of dyesensitized solar cells (DSSCs). From the view of the dye structure, the introduction of substituents like alkoxy/alkyl chains with a large steric hindrance is one of the commonly used strategies to enhance the blocking effect of dye molecules at the interface between TiO2 and the electrolyte/ hole conductor. As a result, the charge recombination can be effectively hampered to improve the solar cells' performance. Here, we review the recent progress and molecular designs in the field of organic sensitizers with o,p-dialkoxyphenyl (DAP)-based bulky donor groups. The advantages and disadvantages of the bulky donor groups for the absorption spectrum, charge recombination and dye regeneration are discussed. At the end, feasible design strategies of organic sensitizers for achieving high open-circuit voltage (V-oc), short circuit photocurrent density (J(sc)) and stability in both liquid-electrolyte DSSCs and all-solid-state DSSCs are proposed.
Unveiling Excitonic Dynamics in High-Efficiency Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cells to Direct Morphological Optimization for Suppressing Charge Recombination.

Abstract:Nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs)-based organic solar cells (OSCs) have recently drawn considerable research interests; however, their excitonic dynamics seems quite different than that of fullerene acceptors-based devices and remains to be largely explored. A random terpolymer of PBBF11 to pair with a paradigm NFA of 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone)-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (ITIC) such that both complementary optical absorption and very small offsets of both highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels are acquired is designed and synthesized. Despite the small energy offsets, efficient electron/hole transfer between PBBF11 and ITIC is both clearly observed from steady-state photoluminescence and transient absorption spectra and also supported by the measured low exciton binding energy in ITIC. Consequently, the PBBF11:ITIC-based OSCs afford an encouraging power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.02%. Although the good miscibility of PBBF11 and ITIC induces a homogenous blend film morphology, it causes severe charge recombination. The fullerene acceptor of PC71BM with varying loading ratios is therefore added to modulate film morphology to effectively reduce the charge recombination. As a result, the optimal OSCs based on PBBF11:ITIC:PC71BM yield a better PCE of 11.4% without any additive or annealing treatment.

Abstract:Organic solar cell optimization requires careful balancing of current–voltage output of the materials system. Here, such optimization using ultrafast spectroscopy as a tool to optimize the material bandgap without altering ultrafast photophysics is reported. A new acceptor–donor–acceptor (A–D–A)‐type small‐molecule acceptor NCBDT is designed by modification of the D and A units of NFBDT. Compared to NFBDT, NCBDT exhibits upshifted highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level mainly due to the additional octyl on the D unit and downshifted lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level due to the fluorination of A units. NCBDT has a low optical bandgap of 1.45 eV which extends the absorption range toward near‐IR region, down to ≈860 nm. However, the 60 meV lowered LUMO level of NCBDT hardly changes the Voc level, and the elevation of the NCBDT HOMO does not have a substantial influence on the photophysics of the materials. Thus, for both NCBDT‐ and NFBDT‐based systems, an unusually slow (≈400 ps) but ultimately efficient charge generation mediated by interfacial charge‐pair states is observed, followed by effective charge extraction. As a result, the PBDB‐T:NCBDT devices demonstrate an impressive power conversion efficiency over 12%—among the best for solution‐processed organic solar cells.
Theoretical Investigation of the Donor Group Related Electronic Structure Properties in Push-Pull Organic Sensitizers

Abstract:The judicious selection of donors is one common tactic to elaborately tailor metal-free chromophores, which can harness visible as well as near-infrared solar photons and modulate the charge transfer kinetics at titania/dye/electrolyte interface in dye-sensitized solar cells. In this paper, to gain insight into the effect of the donor on spectroscopic properties, electronic structures, excited state lifetimes and reorganization energies which are related to light-harvesting capacity and charge transfer reaction, we carried out a computational investigation on a variety of ordinary arylamine electron donors, by use of three cyclopentadithiophene dyes (C246, C218 and K201) with the respective N-hexyl-carbazole (HCZ), dihexyloxy-substituted triphenylamine (HTPA) and bisfluorenylaniline (HFA) electron donors. Amongst these electron donors, N-hexyl-carbazole is found to display the weakest electron-donating capacity, accounting for the corresponding C246 dye with evidently blue-shifted light absorption in comparison with the other two congeners, and endowing the hole mainly localizing on the conjugated segment, which will slow down the regeneration reaction. The HFA electron donor group with large and rigid structure not only presents longer excited state lifetime, which could be beneficial to the photoinduced electron injection, but also features smaller reorganization energy for the regeneration process.

Further improving the device efficiency and stability and reducing the cost of active layer materials will contribute to the industrial development of organic solar cells. As a novel type of carbon nanomaterials, carbon dots gradually show great application potential in the field of organic solar cells due to their advantages of low preparation cost, non-toxicity and excellent photoelectric performance. Firstly, the synthesis and classification of carbon dots are briefly introduced. Secondly, the photoelectric properties of carbon dots and their adjusting, including adjustable surface energy level structure, good film-forming performance and up/down conversion characteristics are summarized. Thirdly, based on these intrinsic properties, the feasibility and advantages of carbon dots used in organic solar cells are discussed. Fourthly, the application progress of carbon dots in the active layer, hole transport layer, electron transport layer, interface modification layer and down-conversion materials of organic solar cells is also reviewed. Finally, the application progress of carbon dots in organic solar cells is prospected. Several further research directions, including in-depth exploration of the controllable preparation of carbon dots and their application in the fields of interface layer and up/down conversion for improving efficiency and stability of device are pointed out.

Abstract:The traditional excess of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) via Knoevenagel condensation reaction (KCR) of aldehyde and active methylene leaves the vulnerable and reversible exocyclic vinyl bonds in structures, which undermine the intrinsic chemo- and photostability of NFAs. In this work, we demonstrate the new access of acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) NFAs via Stille coupling between new electron deficient group and classic donor core in over 90% yield, wherein the robust carbon-carbon bonds, replacing the exocyclic double bonds from traditional KCR, resulting in the stable A-D-A acceptors, Q1-XF (X representing 0, 2 and 4 fluorine atoms, respectively). Among the three studied examples, Q1-4F exhibits the improved optoelectronic and electron transport properties, leading to the best photovoltaic performance with optimal charge kinetics for Q1-4F based OSCs. Effective N‐Doping of Non‐Fullerene Acceptor via Sequential Deposition Enables High‐Efficiency Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:The sequential deposition (SD) doping strategy is adopted to control the dopant's location and achieve effective n‐doping of non‐fullerene acceptors in the SD films. Combining the advantage of vertical component distribution, the doped SD device exhibits superior charge transport properties with enhanced electron mobility, resulting in increased power conversion efficiency (19.55%). Charge transport in the active layer, which can be effectively modulated by molecular doping of organic semiconductors, significantly affects the photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, it is difficult to control the dopant distribution in the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) films, which hinders efficient doping in OSCs. Herein, an effective n‐doping strategy is developed via sequential deposition (SD) of D18 donor and doped acceptor. The favorable vertical component distribution in SD films helps to optimize carrier transport pathways. The SD method confines the n‐dopant N‐DMBI to the acceptor layer, allowing positive effects of molecular doping. Consequently, the doped SD device exhibits superior charge transport with suppressed charge recombination, lower trap density, and enhanced charge extraction compared to the undoped one, resulting in a high power conversion efficiency of 19.55% for D18/L8‐BO binary OSCs. In addition, the doping does not affect the thermal stability of the devices, with the doped SD device retaining over 90% of its initial efficiency after 1200 h of heating at 80 °C. The universality of the SD doping method is also verified in other non‐fullerene acceptor systems. These results demonstrate the great potential of SD doping strategy for building high‐performance OSCs with enhanced charge transport.

Abstract:Energetic disorder is one of the major impediments that limit the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Nevertheless, achieving a favorable nanoscale morphology that restricts the density of states proves to be challenging, especially in the state-of-the-art non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) systems. Here, we incorporate 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene (TMB) as a solid additive to restrict the energetic disorder and achieve outstanding efficiencies of OSCs. The results suggest that TMB possesses intense electrostatic interaction with the terminal groups of NFAs to facilitate direct face-to-face packing. During the film formation, TMB works as a bridge to connect adjacent NFAs, and a controlled π-π stacking distance can be obtained after its subsequent volatilization. The optimized morphology limits energetics disorder, which further enhances exciton delocalization and inhibits non-radiative energy loss. Consequently, TMB-incorporated binary devices based on PBDB-TF:eC9 and ternary devices based on PBDB-TF:eC9:HDO-4Cl record high efficiencies of 18.61% and 19.30%, respectively. This work provides new insights into morphology optimizations and offers inspiration for new approaches to improve OSC performance.
