Abstract:Hierarchical nanostructures have attracted widespread interest owing to their unique properties compared to their bulk counterparts. Thus, they are considered promising electrocatalytic materials. In this work, a novel hierarchical porous nanocomposite of cobalt phosphide nanocage@ferric-zinc mixed-metal phosphide nanotubes (denoted CoP@ZnFeP) was fabricated using a self-assembly approach. Because of their structural and compositional merits, the as-prepared phosphide hybrids have abundant catalytic active sites and high porosity for facile mass diffusion. In an alkaline electrolyte, the CoP@ZnFeP flower-like hybrids displayed enhanced catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction and the oxygen evolution reaction compared with a mechanical mixture of CoP and ZnFeP nanoparticles. The CoP@ZnFeP hierarchical nanocomposites also showed excellent activity for the overall water splitting reaction, yielding a water-splitting current of 10 mA/cm2 on the application of just 1.6 V, as well as excellent durability (24-h long-term operation) in a two-electrode system. Our design methodology may create opportunities to search for highly efficient and robust non-precious metal catalysts with applications in high-performance energy conversion and storage devices.

Abstract:Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) are regarded as highly efficient electrocatalysts due to highly active surface sites, electrical conductivity, and chemical stability, which result from the high electrocatalytic activity of the M-centers and P-sites. Thus, the aim of our work is to obtain highly efficient TMPs electrocatalysts by a facile and controllable strategy. We used N, S-rich Co/Fe bimetallic metal-organic framework as template to prepare ceramic Co/Fe binary phosphides embedded in N, S, O ternary-doped carbon matrix (). By means of a facile one-step low-temperature pyrolysis-phosphating approach, the optimized ceramic material showed remarkable bifunctional electrocatalytic performances in an alkaline electrolyte, which only requires 176 and 240 mV overpotentials to achieve 10 mA cm−2 current density for HER and OER, respectively. Furthermore, when is loaded on the highly conductive nickel foam (NF) for water splitting, it reaches a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a low cell voltage of 1.62 V, superior to pure NF and other reported metal-phosphide electrocatalysts, at the same time, shows negligible performance degradation and a relative current loss of only 4.3% for 40000 s continuous operations. These results indicate derived by MOFs through pyrolysis-phosphating is an ideal electrocatalysts for energy conversion applications.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and low-cost electrocatalyst for water splitting to produce H-2 and O-2 as a sustainable energy fuel to replace noble metal catalyst is vital and urgent for the large-scale deployment of key energy technologies. Here, in combination of composition, structure, and catalytic mechanism analysis, the porous Co0.7Fe0.3P@C catalyst was synthesized by a facile phosphidation process of Co0.7Fe0.3@C which is derived from the corresponding Co-Fe coordination polymer precursors. The Co0.7Fe0.3P@C catalyst shows enhanced electrochemical activity toward oxygen evolution reaction and water splitting due to the incorporation of Fe element and the porous structure, comparable to the commercial noble metal catalyst. Furthermore, the coated carbon can not only promote electronic transmission but also protect the active Co0.7Fe0.3P nanoparticles, resulting in good activity and stability. These fascinating findings in this work would promote the designation and preparation of promising bimetallic oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalyst utilizing coordination polymers as precursors for various energy systems in the future.

Abstract:Cost-effective transition metal-carbon-based hybrids have been widely dedicated to water splitting. Herein, a new three dimensional N-enriched holey carbon layers encapsulated bimetallic phosphides (CoNiP@CN) was synthesized by in situ growth, pyrolysis and phosphorization of CoNi mixed zeolite imidazole frameworks (ZIFs)@ZIF-8 films on Ni foam. CoNiP@CN/NF exhibited smaller overpotentials, lower charge transfer resistance and considerable stability for electrocatalysis. The better performance was attributed to the high conductivity of bimetallic phosphides and N-doped porous carbon, the maximum utilization of active sites on 3D conductive substrate and the protection of bimetallic phosphides by N-doped carbon layers. As an integrated high-performance non-noble electrocatalyst for overall water splitting, the CoNiP@CN/NF requires only 1.59 V@30 mA cm(-2) in alkaline solution, which is comparable to many other non-noble metal catalysts. This work highlights the construction highly efficient transition metal-carbon-based electrocatalyst derived from well-defined ZIF precursor, promoting the development of low-cost non-noble metal hybrids in energy chemistry.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are the electrocatalytic materials with large specific surface area, high porosity, controllable structure and monodisperse active center, which is a promising candidate for the application of electrochemical energy conversion. However, the electrocatalytic performance of pure MOFs is seriously limited its poor conductivity and stability. In this work, high-performance electrocatalyst was fabricated through combining NiFe/MOF on nickel foam (NF) via in-situ growth strategy. Through rational control of the time and ratio in reaction precursors, we realized the effective manipulation of the growth behavior, and further investigated the electrocatalytic performance in water splitting. The catalyst presented excellent electrocatalytic performance for water splitting, with low overpotential of 260 mV in alkaline condition at a current density of 50 mA[Formula: see text], which is benefited from the large specific surface area and active sites. This study demonstrates that the rational design of NiFe MOF/NF plays a significant role in high-performance electrocatalyst.

Abstract:The Mo‐doped Fe2xNi2(1‐x)P nanotubes are synthesized and can be directly employed as a superior bifunctional electrocatalyst. The result reveals that the bimetallic FeNiP system with Mo doping can manipulate electron redistribution to optimize the hydrogen adsorption free energy for HER and lead to rapid surface reconstruction to form high active (Fe)Ni‐oxyhydroxide layers for OER, thus endowing extraordinary bifunctional catalytic performance. Developing high‐efficiency and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting remains a great challenge. Herein, NiMoO4 nanowires as sacrificial templates to synthesize Mo‐doped NiFe Prussian blue analogs are employed, which can be easily phosphorized to Mo‐doped Fe2xNi2(1‐x)P nanotubes (Mo‐FeNiP NTs). This synthesis method enables the controlled etching of NiMoO4 nanowires that results in a unique hollow nanotube architecture. As a bifunctional catalyst, the Mo‐FeNiP NTs present lower overpotential and Tafel slope of 151.3 (232.6) mV at 100 mA cm−2 and 76.2 (64.7) mV dec−1 for HER (OER), respectively. Additionally, it only requires an ultralow cell voltage of 1.47 V to achieve 10 mA cm−2 for overall water splitting and can steadily operate for 200 h at 100 mA cm−2. First‐principles calculations demonstrate that Mo doping can effectively adjust the electron redistribution of the Ni hollow sites to optimize the hydrogen adsorption‐free energy for HER. Besides, in situ Raman characterization reveals the dissolving of doped Mo can promote a rapid surface reconstruction on Mo‐FeNiP NTs to dynamically stable (Fe)Ni‐oxyhydroxide layers, serving as the actual active species for OER. The work proposes a rational approach addressed by electron manipulation and surface reconstruction of bimetallic phosphides to regulate both the HER and OER activity.

Abstract:Highly efficient and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts in the same medium are indispensable for overall water splitting. Herein, Fe-doped Ni–Co phosphide nanoplates with a hierarchical nanostructure were successfully fabricated on a carbon cloth (Fex-NiCoP) via a facile method with electrodesposition and PH3 plasma treatment. Benefiting from the hierarchical structure, two-dimensional nanoplates comprising fine nanocrystals and doping effects of Fe, the Fex-NiCoP demonstrates excellent electrocatalytic performance for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is sensitive to the Fe content. By controlling the Fe content, Fe1-NiCoP achieves 10 mA cm–2 at a low overpotential of 60 mV for the HER, while Fe2-NiCoP with a higher Fe doping content drives 50 mA cm–2 at only 293 mV for the OER. Upon high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, some planar defects were observed in the Fe-doped NiCoP nanocrystals, which may account for the increased exposure of active sites. When the optimal Fex-NiCoP electrodes were employed as the anode and cathode for water electrolysis in the alkaline electrolyte, the electrolyzer achieves 10 mA cm–2 at a low cell voltage of 1.61 V. Our work might shed light on rational design of the efficient multimetallic phosphide bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Abstract:Herein, a rational synthesis process of Fe‐doped CoP nanoframe electrocatalyst is described, which can regular not only specific morphology but also hetero‐ion doping concentration. Due to the optimization of catalytic interfaces and intrinsic properties of materials, the unique nano‐framework structured Fe‐CoP material exhibits excellent catalytic activities with overpotentials of only 255 and 122 mV for OER and HER at 10 mA cm−2 in strong alkaline media. Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have emerged as an alternative to precious metals as efficient and low‐cost catalysts for water electrolysis. Elemental doping and morphology control are effective approaches to further improve the performance of TMPs. Herein, Fe‐doped CoP nanoframes (Fe‐CoP NFs) with specific open cage configuration were designed and synthesized. The unique nano‐framework structured Fe‐CoP material shows overpotentials of only 255 and 122 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively, overwhelming most transition metal phosphides. For overall water splitting, the cell voltage is 1.65 V for Fe‐CoP NFs at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, much superior to what is observed for the classical nanocubic structures. Fe‐CoP NFs show no activity degradation up to 100 h which contrasts sharply with the rapidly decaying performance of noble metal catalyst reference. The superior electrocatalytic performance of Fe‐CoP NFs due to abundant accessible active sites, reduced kinetic energy barrier, and preferable *O‐containing intermediate adsorption is demonstrated through experimental observations and theoretical calculations. Our findings could provide a potential method for the preparation of multifunctional material with hollow structures and offer more hopeful prospects for obtaining efficient earth‐abundant catalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic water splitting is the most directly available route to generate renewable and sustainable hydrogen. Here, we report the design of a composite material in which arrays of square pillar-like NiMoO4 nanorods coated with N, P-doped carbon layers are uniformly contained in numerous nested nanoparticle structures. The catalysts have superior catalytic activity, requiring only 59 mV and 187 mV for HER and OER to attain a current density of 10 mA/cm2, respectively. The assembled two-electrode electrolytic cell required a voltage of 1.48 V to reach 10 mA/cm2, along with excellent long-term stability. Theoretical calculations reveal that electrons aggregate and redistribute at the heterogeneous interface, with the d-band centers of the Ni and Fe atoms being positively shifted compared to the Fermi level, effectively optimizing the adsorption of intermediates and reducing the Gibbs free energy, thus accelerating the catalytic process. Meanwhile, an integrated solar-driven water-splitting system demonstrated a high and stable solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 18.20%. This work provides new possibilities for developing non-precious metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts for large-scale water splitting applications.

Abstract:Transition-metal-based phosphides (TMPs) have been considered as attractive electrocatalysts for water splitting due to their earth-abundance and remarkable catalytic activity. As a representative type of precursors, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide ideal plateaus for the design of nanostructured TMPs. In this work, the hierarchically structured iron phosphide nanobundles (FeP-500) were fabricated by one-step phosphorization of an iron-based MOF (MET(Fe)) precursor. The derived FeP-500 nanobundles were constructed by quasi-paralleled one-dimensional nanorods with uneven surface, which provided channels for electrolyte penetration, mass transport, and effective exposure of active sites during the water-splitting process. With the addition of conductive Super P, the obtained FeP-500-S exhibited a good electrocatalytic performance towards the hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline electrolyte (1 mol L-1 KOH). Furthermore, to investigate the influence of secondary metal doping, a series of isoreticular MOF precursors and bimetallic TMPs were fabricated. The results indicated that the catalytic performance is structure dominated.

Abstract:Integrating the unique metalloid behaviour of monometallic phosphides and modified local electronic/geometric structures of active sites, bimetallic phosphides have emerged as promising candidates for water splitting reaction, but they are still synthesized by toxic, corrosive, and high-temperature methods, which inevitably resulted in an increase of particle size and the decrease of catalytic activity area. Herein, the ultra-fine bimetallic NiCoP catalysts in-situ embedded in P, N-codoped carbon nanofibers () were successfully fabricated via a facile electrospinning method with the help of phytic acid. Profiting from the unique macro-structural design and micro-electronic/geometric modification, as-prepared catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic performance both for HER (η10 = 98 mV) and OER (η10 = 260 mV) in terms of the low overpotential and robust stabilities in alkaline solution. Meanwhile, XAFS analysis further demonstrated that the remarkable catalytic performance not only attributed to the introduction of heteroatom-doped carbon fibers as their improvements in the corrosion resistance, anti-agglomeration abilities, and conductivity, but also benefited from the local electronic/geometric structure alternations as the strong synergic effects between Ni/Co and P atoms. For practical application, the water splitting performance based on electrodes was also investigated and exhibited a lower splitting potential (EJ=10, 1.645 V) over long-term stability tests. These insightful findings undoubtedly shed light on the design and fabrication of cost-effective and robust bifunctional transition-metal phosphides electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Developing low-cost and highly active heterogeneous catalysts toward electrocatalytic water splitting is highly desirable and the challenges still remain. Herein, we construct a novel bimetallic phosphide catalyst (Mo-Ni-P) by the means of electronic reconfiguration and morphology engineering technology for both hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction (HER and OER). Benefiting from the attractive nano-architectures of honeycomb spheres and the synergistic effect of Ni and Mo element with exposed abundant active sites, the optimized Mo-Ni-P exhibits satisfactory electrocatalytic activity for HER and OER. Meanwhile, theoretical density functional calculations reveal that the ternary electrocatalyst extremely facilitates the electrical activity and reduces the hydrogen adsorption energy. When explored as both the cathode and anode, the cell voltage was required by a low value of 1.589 V to reach the current density of 10 mA/cm(2) in alkaline solution, suggesting the remarkable bifunctional electrocatalytic performance for overall water splitting. This work not only provides insights into the structure-property relationships, but also developed an effective approach to design and prepare high-efficiency water-splitting electrocatalysts. Abstract:Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) are one of the most promising alternatives to noble metal electrocatalysts, but so far their activity and stability still fall short of expectations. Here, we prepare nitrogen-doped nickel-cobalt phosphide (N-NiCoP) and molybdenum phosphide (MoP) heterostructures engineered on nickel foam (NF) with nanosheet structure by high-temperature annealing and low-temperature phosphorylation. Notably, heteroatomic N doping and heterostructures construction are achieved together through a simple co-pyrolysis method. The distinctive composition can synergistically promote the electron transfer, lower the reaction barriers, thus improve the catalytic performance. Therefore, the modified requires low overpotentials of 43 mV and 232 mV to reach 10 mA cm -2 current density for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) accompanied by satisfactory stability in 1 M KOH. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the electron coupling and synergistic interfacial effects at the heterogeneous interface. This study provides a new strategy for heterogeneous electrocatalysts with elemental doping to promote hydrogen applications.

Structural characterizations and the density function theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the interface effect of NiCoP/Ni12P5 heterojunction can regulate the electronic structure of the catalyst to optimize the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen (ΔGH*); simultaneously, the defect-rich layered nanoarrays can expose more active sites, shorten mass transfer distance, and generate a self-supporting structure for in-situ reinforcing the structural stability. As a result, this NiCoP/Ni12P5@NF catalyst exhibits favorable electrocatalytic performance, which simply needs overpotentials of 100 mV for HER and 310 mV for OER, respectively, at a current density of 10 mA·cm-2. The anion exchange membrane electrolyzer assembled with this NiCoP/Ni12P5@NF as both anode and cathode catalysts can operate stably for 200 h at a current density of 100 mA·cm-2 with an insignificant voltage decrease. This work may provide some inspiration for the further rational design of inexpensive non-noble multifunctional electrocatalysts and electrode materials for water splitting to generate hydrogen.

Abstract:Designing non-precious electrocatalysts with multiple active centers and durability toward overall water splitting is of great significance for storing renewable energy. This study reports a low-cost Mo, Fe codoped NiCoPx electrocatalysts derived from Co-Fe Prussian blue analogue and following phosphorization process. Benefitted from the optimized electronic configuration, hierarchical structure and abundant active sites, the Mo,Fe-NiCoPx/NF electrode has shown competitive oxygen evolution reaction (ƞ10 = 197 mV) and hydrogen evolution reaction performance (ƞ10 = 99 mV) when the current density is 10 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH solution. Moreover, the integrated water splitting device assembled by Mo,Fe-NiCoPx/NF as both anode and cathode only needs a voltage of 1.545 V to reach 10 mA cm-2. Density functional theory results further confirm that the Mo, Fe codoped heterostructure can synergistically optimize the d-band center and Gibbs free energy during electrocatalytic processes, thus accelerating the kinetics of electrochemical water splitting. This work demonstrates the importance of rational combination of metal doping and interface engineering for advanced catalytic materials.

Abstract:Abstract It is still a huge challenge to develop highly efficient and low-cost non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts for overall water splitting in alkaline electrolytes. Herein, Cr and Fe co-doped CoP porous mesh nanosheets (Mesh-CrFe-CoP NSs) were synthesized through hydrolysis reaction, ion exchange etching and subsequent low-temperature phosphating process. The Mesh-CrFe-CoP NSs provides overpotentials at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 under alkaline electrolyte of 103.7 mV and 256.4 mV for HER and OER, respectively. Furthermore, when using Mesh-CrFe-CoP NSs as anode and cathode, the water splitting system could afford a current density of 10 mA cm –2 at 1.55 V, which is better than an electrolytic cell composed of 20% Pt/C and RuO 2 . The excellent electrocatalytic performance of Mesh-CrFe-CoP NSs is attributed to the co-doping and porous nanostructure. Specifically, the Cr and Fe co-doped porous CoP nanosheets electrocatalyst not only provided abundant exposure active sites, accelerated the entry of liquid and the diffusion of gas, but also regulated the electronic environment of active sites, and thus enhanced the electrochemical performance. This work proposes a strategy for the rational design of highly efficient and stable non-precious metal co-doped phosphide electrocatalysts in the of electrochemical water splitting.

Abstract:Controllable construction of proficient electrocatalyst with 3D hierarchical architecture to achieve low cost and high efficient overall water splitting is of great significance to the sustainable development. Hereby, trimetallic phosphides confined in N-doped carbon nanoflowers (CoNiP/CoNiFeP@NCNFs) were fabricated using CoNi coordination polymer nanoflowers/CoNiFe layered double hydroxide (CoNi CPNFs/CoNiFe LDH) as precursors followed by phosphorization. Benefiting from the unique 3D hierarchical porous architecture, preeminent conductivity, high specific surface area, efficient mass/charge transfer and synergic effect of various transition metals, the well-designed CoNiP/CoNiFeP@NCNFs exhibit extraordinary electrocatalytic performance for both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. Particularly, this novel material can work as a bifunctional catalyst in an integrated water-splitting electrolyzer, which only requires a low voltage of 1.55 V to realize the current density of 10 mA cm-2 with admirable durability (at least 28 h). This work certified the foreground of composites assembled by 3D hierarchical porous carbon and polymetallic phosphides for overall water splitting. It also provided a novel proposal for the rational designing and constructing highly active electrocatalysts by using coordination polymer and LDH as dual-precursors.
