Abstract:Efficient non-doped deep blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were fabricated by solution-processing method by using a series of small molecules consisting of various contents of triphenylamine and phosphonate-featured fluorene units as the emitting layer. Without any electron-injection layer, one of the optimal devices with a simple double-layer device configuration exhibits a maximal current efficiency of 2.59 cd A (1) at 6.8 V (1.72 mA cm (2)) with a CIE coordinates of (0.163, 0.097). These double-layer devices are demonstrated with excellent color-stability under a wide range of operating current density. The current work indicates that electron-rich triphenylamine moiety incorporated with phosphonate-featured fluorene units could be utilized as building blocks to construct a multi-functional platform combining good electron-injection property, carrier-transport property, and efficient electroluminescence. It also provides an approach to achieve a structure-simplified color-stable efficient blue OLED. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Extremely Stable Deep-Blue Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Employing Diindolophenazine-Based Fluorophore with Narrow-Band Emission and a Shallow LUMO Level

Abstract:The development of narrow emission bandwidth materials is a highly active research area in the field of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In addition to B- and N-heterocyclic compounds, known as multiple-resonance (MR) emitters, chromophores based on multi-N-heterocycles can also achieve ultra-narrow-band blue emission. However, the reliability of devices containing the latter has been rarely investigated. In this study, we designed a rigid and electron-rich chromophore diindolo[3,2,1-de:3 & PRIME;,2 & PRIME;,1 & PRIME;-kl]phenazine (DIPz) by fusing two 9Hcarbazole. This resulted in suppressed geometric distortion and vibration coupling during excitation. Furthermore, DIPz was modified with mesityl and 4-(tert-butyl)-N-phenylaniline groups, which finally evolved into a narrow-band blue emitter tDAmDIPz. The tDAmDIPz-based device showed an emission maximum at 458 nm with a narrow full-width at half-maximum of 17 nm, and a high maximum external quantum efficiency of 9.1%. Because the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level of - 1.98 eV for tDAmDIPz was much shallower than - 2.47 eV for the anthracene-based host, electron trapping at emitters could be prevented, resulting in a very long LT95 lifetime of 338 h at a current density of 25 mA/cm2, which was higher than devices based on traditional BN-type MR emitters. This study suggested a general relationship between the operational lifetime and the LUMO energy difference between the emitter and the host, which opens a door to extremely stable blue OLEDs.

Abstract:Highly efficient deep-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is observed from a charge-transfer compound bis[4-(3,6-dimethoxycarbazole)phenyl]sulfone (DMOC-DPS). In comparison with the previously reported carbazole/sulfone derivative with tert-butyl substituents on the carbazole donors, DMOC-DPS exhibits a much shorter excited-state lifetime in both an aromatic solution and an organic thin film, because the change of the substituent on the donor affects the molecular energy levels of the first singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) excited states in different ways, decreasing the energy gap between S1 and T1 (ΔEST). An organic light emitting diode (OLED) based on DMOC-DPS achieves a maximum external electroluminescence quantum efficiency (EQE) of 14.5% and reduced efficiency roll-off, with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.16, 0.16), owing to efficient exciton harvesting that occurs through triplet-to-singlet up-conversion.

Abstract:Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) employing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) have emerged as cheaper alternatives to high-performance phosphorescent OLEDs with noble-metal-based dopants. However, the efficiencies of blue TADF OLEDs are still low at high luminance, limiting full-colour display. Here, we report a blue OLED containing a 9,10-dihydroacridine/diphenylsulphone derivative that has a comparable performance to today's best phosphorescent OLEDs. The device offers an external quantum efficiency of 19.5% and reduced efficiency roll-off characteristics at high luminance. Through computational simulation, we identified six pretwisted intramolecular charge-transfer (CT) molecules with small singlet–triplet CT state splitting but different energy relationships between 3 CT and locally excited triplet ( 3 LE) states. Systematic comparison of their excited-state dynamics revealed that CT molecules with a large twist angle can emit efficient and short-lifetime (a few microseconds) TADF when the emission peak energy is high enough and the 3 LE state is higher than the 3 CT state.

Abstract:Due to the difficulty in achieving high efficiency and high color purity simultaneously, blue emission is the limiting factor for the performance and stability of OLEDs. Since 2003, we have been working on organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), especially on blue light. After a series of molecular designs, novel strategies have been proposed from different aspects. At first, highly efficient deep blue emission could be achieved through molecular design with highly twisted structure to suppress fluorescence quenching and redshift. Deep blue emitters with high efficiency in solid state, a twisted structure with aggregation induced emission (AIE) characteristics was incorporated to inhibit molecular aggregation, and triplet-triplet fusion (TTF) and hybridized localized charge transfer (HLCT) were adopted to increase the ratio of triplet exciton used. Secondly, a highly efficient blue OLED could be achieved through improving charge transport. New electron transport materials (ETMs) with wide band gap were developed to control charge transport balance in devices. Thirdly, a highly efficient deep blue emission could be achieved through a mesoscopic structure of out-coupling layer. A mesoscopic photonic structured organic thin film was fabricated on the top of metal electrode by self-aggregation in order to improve the light out-coupling efficiency.

Abstract:A series of multibranched oligofluorenes with a phosphine oxide center were designed and synthesized through Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. Their thermal, photophysical, and electrochemical properties were investigated. The phosphine oxide linkage can disrupt the conjugation, and then allow the molecule system to extend to improve the solution processability and photoluminescent quantum yields without depreciating the deep blue emission. The noncoplanar molecular structures resulting from the phosphine oxide triangular pyramidal configuration can suppress the intermolecular interaction. All compounds display strong deep-blue emission both in solution and the solid state. Solution-processed devices based on these oligofluorenes exhibit highly efficient deep-blue electroluminescence, and the device performances are significantly enhanced with the extension of the oligofluorene branches. The double-layered device featuring PPO-TF3 as emitter shows a maximum current efficiency of 1.88 cd A(-1) and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 3.39% with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.16, 0.09) that are very close to the National Television Standards Committee's blue standard.

Abstract:Deep-blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with narrow emission spectra and high efficiency, meeting the Rec.2020 standard, hold significant promise in the realm of 4K/8K ultrahigh-definition displays. However, the development of light-emitting materials exhibiting both narrowband emission and high efficiency, particularly in the realm of deep-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), confronts substantial challenges. Herein, a novel deep-blue TADF emitter, named BOC-PSi, was designed by integrating a rigid B-heterotriangulene acceptor (A) with a rigid phenazasiline donor (D). The replacement of a sp3 carbon atom with a sp3 silicon atom in the D moiety helps to restrict the low-frequency bending vibration throughout the entire D-A molecular backbone, while concurrently accelerating the multi-channel reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) processes. Notably, OLEDs using the BOC-PSi emitter exhibit exceptional performance, with a high maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) approaching 20%, and a superior color purity closely aligning with the Rec.2020 blue standard. A deep blue TADF emitter composed of rigid D and A units was developed. BOC-PSi-based OLED exhibited not only an impressive EQEmax approaching 20%, but also a superior color purity approaching the Rec.2020 blue standard.

Abstract:Efficient and stable blue luminescent organic materials are highly demanded in the field of organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) but still remain challenging. In this work, two new sky‐blue luminescent molecules comprised of electron acceptor of benzophenone and electron donors of spiro[acridine‐9,9'‐fluorene] and carbazole are designed and synthesized, and their thermal stability, electrochemical behaviors, photophysical properties, carrier transport ability and electroluminescence performance are investigated. They exhibit distinct merits of aggregation‐induced delayed fluorescence with high solid‐state photoluminescence quantum yields, balanced bipolar carrier transport and high horizontal dipole ratios. Highly efficient OLEDs using both molecules as emitters are obtained, which radiate strong sky‐blue light and provide outstanding external quantum efficiencies of up to 33.3% with small roll‐offs. Abstract:Crystalline organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are of great potential for the applications in solid-state lighting and electrically pumped organic lasers. Now the performance of crystalline OLEDs is poor because those devices typically use a single organic material with unmatched electron and hole mobilities resulting in imbalance charge injection. Here, we fabricate a crystalline OLED with a multi-layer architecture based on high-quality crystalline films. The device exhibits low driving voltage and high efficiency due to balanced charge injection and exciton confinement. An external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 2.41% is achieved, and the EQE value is the highest efficiency in the field of crystalline OLEDs to date. We expect that our results will be a starting point for further research, providing high-performance crystalline OLEDs for solid-state lighting and electrically pumped organic lasers.

Abstract:A series of starburst oligomers (T1-T3) that contained a fully diarylmethene-bridged triphenylamine core and oligofluorene arms were designed and synthesized through Suzuki cross-coupling reactions. Their thermal, photophysical, and electrochemical properties were also investigated. These materials showed high glass transition, in the range of 123-129 °C, and good film-forming abilities. They displayed deep-blue emission both in solution and as thin films. Solution-processed devices based on these oligomers exhibited highly efficient deep-blue electroluminescence and the device performances were significantly enhanced with the extension of the oligofluorene arms. The double-layered device that contained T3 as an emitter showed a maximum current efficiency of 3.83 cd A(-1) and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 4.19% with CIE coordinates of (0.16, 0.09), which are among the highest values for undoped deep-blue OLEDs that are based on solution-processable starburst oligomers.

Abstract:Multiple-sites functionalization of deep-blue light-emitting conjugated molecules can not only optimize photo-electrical processing to obtain robust electroluminescent behavior, but also enhance the film-forming ability to manufacture large-area film via solution processing technology. Herein, we demonstrated a pendant side-functionalization to prepare a series of unsymmetrical substituted steric terfluorenes (MC8 and MC6Cz) via originally introducing the alkoxy and carbazole group at 4-position of fluorene segments for the narrowband ultra-deep-blue solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Both two materials exhibited an ultra-deep-blue emission with a CIE coordinates of (0.16, 0.06) and PLQY efficiencies of ~60%, due to the single-molecular exciton behavior without polariton formation, confirmed by the time-resolved transient spectroscopy. Interestingly, compared to the MC8, MC6Cz films present stable deep-blue emission without obvious green-band emission when thermal annealed in the air or irradiated for 3 hours under UV light, attributed to the self-encapsulation of the pendant carbazole group. Finally, MC6Cz-based OLEDs exhibited a narrowband ultra-deep-blue emission, a high brightness at low current density, with a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 1.17% and CIE coordinates of (0.16, 0.06). All above results confirm that the introduction of Cz group inhibits the aggregation between molecular main chains, realizes the single molecular mechanism of exciton behavior, establishes the two-dimensional carrier transport channel, improves the morphology, spectral stability and efficiency of the material, which is conducive to the realization of efficient and stable solution-processed deep-blue light-emitting devices.

Abstract:Spin-cast from various solvents, emissive layers show different film morphologies and performances in solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Here we fabricated and demonstrated highly efficient blue OLEDs based on bis[3,5-difluoro-2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl]-(2-carboxypyridy)iridium(iii) by choosing several kinds of solvents for spin-coating. Experiments indicate that the single-layer device with an emissive film cast from chlorobenzene shows its best performance with a highest current efficiency of 18.99 cd A(-1), a maximum luminance of 20.5 × 10(3) cd m(-2) and an emission band centered at 474 nm. The efficiency achieved is the highest reported for solution-processed simple-manufactured OLEDs doped with transition metal phosphors emitting in the blue region.

Abstract:High performance solution-processable deep-blue emitters with a Commission International de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinate of CIEy ≤ 0.08 are highly desired in ultrahigh-definition display. Although, deep-blue materials with hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) excited-state feature are promising candidates, their rigidity and planar molecular structures limit their application in solution-processing technique. Herein, four novel deep-blue solution-processable HLCT emitters were first proposed by attaching rigid imide aliphatic rings as functional units onto the HLCT emitting core. The functional units not only improve solubility, enhance thermal properties and morphological stability of the emitting core, but also promote photoluminescence efficiency, balance charge carrier transport, and inhibit aggregation-caused quenching effect due to the weak electron-withdrawing property as well as steric hindrance. The corresponding solution-processable organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) substantiate an unprecedented maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 11.5% with an emission peak at 456 nm and excellent colour purity (full width at half maximum = 56 nm and CIEy = 0.09). These efficiencies represent the state-of-the-art device performance among the solution-processable blue OLEDs based on the "hot exciton" mechanism. This simple strategy opens up a new avenue for designing highly efficient solution-processable deep-blue organic luminescent materials.

Abstract:Organic single crystals have a great potential in the field of organic optoelectronics because of their advantages of high carrier mobility and high thermal stability. However, the application of the organic single crystals in light‐emitting devices (OLEDs) has been limited by single‐layered structure with unbalanced carrier injection and transport. Here, fabrication of a multilayered‐structure crystal‐based OLED constitutes a major step toward balanced carrier injection and transport by introducing an anodic buffer layer and electron transport layer into the device structure. Three primary color single‐crystal‐based OLEDs based on the multilayered structure and molecular doping exhibit a maximum luminance and current efficiency of 820 cd cm−2 and 0.9 cd A−1, respectively, which are the highest performance to date for organic single‐crystal‐based OLEDs. This work paves the way toward high‐performance organic optoelectronic devices based on the organic single crystals.

Abstract:Highly efficient and stable blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) cannot be easily obtained simultaneously. In particular, the efficiency roll-off as a reference index to evaluate the lifetime of deep-blue OLED at high luminescence is still severe. A novel molecule ( CzSiTrz ) connected with carbazole and triazine fragments by a nonconjugated silicon atom is designed. An intramolecular charge transfer emission and intermolecular exciplex luminescence in the aggregated state are obtained, resulting in a dual-channel intra/intermolecular exciplex ( DCIE ) emission with fast and efficient reverse intersystem crossing (RISC). Deep-blue OLED with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.157, 0.076) and a record-high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 20.35% at high luminance (5000 cd m −2 ) is accomplished. Simple molecular synthesis and device fabrication of this strategy give a unique approach to realizing high-performance deep-blue electroluminescence.

Abstract:Based on the strategy of constructing a new cross-linkable thermally activated delayed fluorescence TADF dendrimer act as the emitter, the blue all-solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) was developed. Here, two thermally cross-linkable TADF molecules, namely DV-3CzCN and DVCz-3CzCN, are designed and synthesized. Systematic studies demonstrate that the utilization of DVCz-3CzCN can form a stable and uniform thin film by the solution-process, but also effectively suppress the triplet excitons concentration quenching by the intermolecular interaction. Simultaneously, DVCz-3CzCN possesses the sufficient solvent resistance that can afford the subsequently deposition of electron transporting materials by orthogonal solvent. Consequently, the highly efficient blue all-solution-processed device based on DVCz-3CzCN realized a maximum current efficiency (CE), power efficiency (PE) and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.1 cd A−1, 4.5 lm W−1 and 6.8%, respectively, which is eight times higher in device efficiency than corresponding device with the unencapsulated DV-3CzCN.

Abstract:Fast and efficient exciton utilization is a crucial solution and highly desirable for achieving high-performance blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, the rate and efficiency of exciton utilization in traditional OLEDs, which employ fully closed-shell materials as emitters, are inevitably limited by spin statistical limitations and transition prohibition. Herein, a new sensitization strategy, namely doublet-sensitized fluorescence (DSF), is proposed to realize high-performance deep-blue electroluminescence. In the DSF-OLED, a doublet-emitting cerium(III) complex, Ce-2, is utilized as sensitizer for multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitter ν-DABNA. Experimental results reveal that holes and electrons predominantly recombine on Ce-2 to form doublet excitons, which subsequently transfer energy to the singlet state of ν-DABNA via exceptionally fast (over 108 s-1) and efficient (≈100%) Förster resonance energy transfer for deep-blue emission. Due to the circumvention of spin-flip in the DSF mechanism, near-unit exciton utilization efficiency and remarkably short exciton residence time of 1.36 µs are achieved in the proof-of-concept deep-blue DSF-OLED, which achieves a Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinate of (0.13, 0.14), a high external quantum efficiency of 30.0%, and small efficiency roll-off of 14.7% at a luminance of 1000 cd m-2. The DSF device exhibits significantly improved operational stability compared with unsensitized reference device.
