Abstract:Many studies have focused on the physicochemical properties of aerosol particles in unusually severe haze episodes in North China instead of the more frequent and less severe hazes. Consistent with this lack of attention, the morphology and mixing state of organic matter (OM) particles in the frequent light and moderate (L & M) hazes in winter in the North China Plain (NCP) have not been examined, even though OM dominates these fine particles. In the present work, morphology, mixing state, and size of organic aerosols in the L & M hazes were systematically characterized using transmission electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometer, with the comparisons among an urban site (Jinan, S1), a mountain site (Mt. Tai, S2), and a background island site (Changdao, S3) in the same hazes. Based on their morphologies, the OM particles were divided into six different types: spherical (type 1), near-spherical (type 2), irregular (type 3), domelike (type 4), dispersed-OM (type 5), and OM-coating (type 6). In the three sampling sites, types 1–3 of OM particles were most abundant in the L & M hazes and most of them were internally mixed with non-OM particles. The abundant near-spherical OM particles with higher sphericity and lower aspect ratio indicate that these primary OM particles formed in the cooling process after polluted plumes were emitted from coal combustion and biomass burning. Based on the Si-O-C ratio in OM particles, we estimated that 71 % of type 1–3 OM particles were associated with coal combustion. Our result suggests that coal combustion in residential stoves was a widespread source from urban to rural areas in NCP. Average OM thickness which correlates with the age of the air masses in type 6 particles only slightly increased from S1 to S2 to S3, suggesting that the L & M hazes were usually dry (relative humidity < 60 %) with weak photochemistry and heterogeneous reactions between particles and gases. We conclude that the direct emissions from these coal stoves without any pollution controls in rural areas and in urban outskirts contribute large amounts of primary OM particles to the regional L & M hazes in North China.
Ozone Formation under Low Solar Radiation in Eastern China

Abstract:Abstract. PM2.5, a particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less, is one of the major components of the air pollution in eastern China. In the past few years, China's government made strong efforts to reduce the PM2.5 pollutions. However, another important pollutant (ozone) becomes an important problem in eastern China. Ozone (O3) is produced by photochemistry, which requires solar radiation for the formation of O3. Under heavy PM2.5 pollution, the solar radiation is often depressed, and the photochemical production of O3 is prohibited. This study shows that during fall in eastern China, under heavy PM2.5 pollutions, there were often strong O3 photochemical productions, causing a co-occurrence of high PM2.5 and O3 concentrations. This co-occurrence of high PM2.5 and O3 is un-usual and is the main focus of this study. Recent measurements show that there were often high HONO surface concentrations in major Chinese mega cities, especially during daytime, with maximum concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 2 ppbv. It is also interesting to note that the high HONO concentrations were occurred during high aerosol concentration periods, suggesting that there were additional HONO surface sources in eastern China. Under the high daytime HONO concentrations, HONO can be photo-dissociated to be OH radicals, which enhance the photochemical production of O3. In order to study the above scientific issues, a radiative transfer model (TUV; Tropospheric Ultraviolet-Visible) is used in this study, and a chemical steady state model is established to calculate OH radical concentrations. The calculations show that by including the OH production of the photo-dissociated of HONO, the calculated OH concentrations are significantly higher than the values without including this production. For example, by including HONO production, the maximum of OH concentration under the high aerosol condition (AOD = 2.5) is similar to the value under low aerosol condition (AOD = 0.25) in the no-HONO case. This result suggests that even under the high aerosol condition, the chemical oxidizing process for O3 production can occurred, which explain the co-occurrence of high PM2.5 and high O3 in fall season in eastern China. However, the O3 concentrations were not significantly affected by the appearance of HONO in winter. This study shows that the seasonal variation of solar radiation plays important roles for controlling the OH production in winter. When the solar radiation is in a very low level in winter, it reaches the threshold level to prevent the OH chemical production, even by including the HONO production of OH. This study provides some important scientific highlights to better understand the O3 pollutions in eastern China.

Abstract:The characteristics of aerosol particles have been poorly evaluated even though haze episodes frequently occur in winter in Northeast China. OC/EC analysis, ion chromatography, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to investigate the organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC), and soluble ions in PM2.5 and the mixing state of individual particles during a severe wintertime haze episode in Northeast China. The organic matter (OM), NH4+, SO42-, and NO3- concentrations in PM2.5 were 89.5 μg/m3, 24.2 μg/m3, 28.1 μg/m3, and 32.8 μg/m3 on the haze days, respectively. TEM observations further showed that over 80% of the haze particles contained primary organic aerosols (POAs). Based on a comparison of the data obtained during the haze formation, we generate the following synthetic model of the process: (1) Stable synoptic meteorological conditions drove the haze formation. (2) The early stage of haze formation (light or moderate haze) was mainly caused by the enrichment of POAs from coal burning for household heating and cooking. (3) High levels of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs), sulfates, and nitrates formation via heterogeneous reactions together with POAs accumulation promoted to the evolution from light or moderate to severe haze. Compared to the severe haze episodes over the North China Plain, the PM2.5 in Northeast China analyzed in the present study contained similar sulfate, higher SOA, and lower nitrate contents. Our results suggest that most of the POAs and secondary particles were likely related to emissions from coal-burning residential stoves in rural outskirts and small boilers in urban areas. The inefficient burning of coal for household heating and cooking should be monitored during wintertime in Northeast China.

Abstract:In the present work, we aim to elucidate the roles of low-volatility organic vapors in atmospheric new particle formation in urban Beijing. Proposed organic molecules are derived from both the ambient measurement and the reasonable proxy. Several representations for the nucleation theories involving sulfuric acid and organic vapors are evaluated. The particle nucleation rates show good correlations both with sulfuric acid and organic vapors, suggesting that both play an important role in the atmospheric new particle formation. For the entire data set, the best fit (R = 0.79, slope = 1.1) between the observed and modeled particle nucleation rates is achieved with the homogenous nucleation theory of sulfuric acid (both homomolecularly and heteromolecularly) with separate coefficients in J = K-SA1[H2SO4](2) + K-SA2[H2SO4][Org]. In addition, sulfuric acid concentration only contributes a small fraction (<15%) to the total observed growth rate. The growth rates of 7-30 nm particles show positive correlation with the organic vapors oxidized by ozone, suggesting that particle nucleation may be controlled by the light intensity or OH concentration, while the growth of nucleation mode particles seems to be limited more by the Concentrations of the organic precursors. Abstract:Oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs) are the crucial intermediates linking volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) in the atmosphere, but comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of OOMs and their formation from VOCs is still missing. Here, we investigate OOMs, measured by a nitrate-ion-based chemical ionization mass spectrometer at Nanjing in eastern China, through performing positive matrix factorization on binned mass spectra (binPMF). The binPMF analysis reveals three factors about anthropogenic VOC (AVOC) daytime chemistry, three isoprene-related factors, three factors about biogenic VOC (BVOC) nighttime chemistry, and three factors about nitrated phenols. All factors are influenced by NOx in different ways and to different extents. Over 1000 non-nitro molecules have been identified and then reconstructed from the selected solution of binPMF, and about 72% of the total signals are contributed by nitrogen-containing OOMs, mostly regarded as organic nitrates formed through peroxy radicals terminated by nitric oxide or nitrate-radical-initiated oxidations. Moreover, multi-nitrates account for about 24% of the total signals, indicating the significant presence of multiple generations, especially for isoprene (e.g., C5H10O8N2 and C5H9O10N3). Additionally, the distribution of OOM concentration on the carbon number confirms their precursors are driven by AVOCs mixed with enhanced BVOCs during summer. Our results highlight the decisive role of NOx in OOM formation in densely populated areas, and we encourage more studies on the dramatic interactions between anthropogenic and biogenic emissions.

Abstract:Enhanced ozone (O3) pollution has emerged as a pressing environmental concern in China, particularly for densely populated megacities and major city clusters. However, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the key precursors to O3 formation, have not been routinely measured. In this study, we characterize the spatial and temporal patterns of VOCs and examine the role of VOCs in O3 production in five cities (Dongying (DY), Rizhao (RZ), Yantai (YT), Weihai (WH), and Jinan (JN)) in the North China Plain (NCP) for two sampling periods (June and December) in 2021 through continuous field observations. Among various VOC categories, alkanes accounted for the largest proportion of VOCs in the cities. For VOCs, chemical reactivities, aromatic hydrocarbons, and alkenes were dominant contributors to O3 formation potential (OFP). Unlike inland regions, the contribution to OFP from OVOCs increased greatly at high O3 concentrations in coastal regions (especially YT). Model simulations during the O3 episode show that the net O3 production rates were 27.87, 10.24, and 10.37 ppbv/h in DY, RZ, and JN. The pathway of HO2 + NO contributed the most to O3 production in JN and RZ, while RO2 + NO was the largest contributor to O3 production in DY. The relative incremental reactivity (RIR) revealed that O3 formation in DY was the transitional regime, while it was markedly the VOC-limited regime in JN and RZ. The O3 production response is influenced by NOx concentration and has a clear daily variation pattern (the sensitivity is greater from 15:00 to 17:00). The most efficiencies in O3 reduction could be achieved by reducing NOx when the NOx concentration is low (less than 20 ppbv in this study). This study reveals the importance of ambient VOCs in O3 production over the NCP and demonstrates that a better grasp of VOC sources and profiles is critical for in-depth O3 regulation in the NCP.

Abstract:Size-resolved aerosol organic carbon (OC) and water-soluble OC (WSOC) was determined weekly in urban Beijing between 2013 and 2018. The results showed that in winter, the concentrations of WSOC and OC in fine (<2.1 μm) and coarse (>2.1 μm) mode were highest in 2013. During the following years, the concentrations of WSOC and OC were lower but an increasing trend was found from 2014 to 2016, which might be due to the increasing precursor concentrations. From summer 2013 to 2018, the concentrations of OC and WSOC in both fine and coarse mode decreased, which might be affected by decreasing emission intensity and photochemical oxidation. To characterize the seasonality of WSOC, two intensive field observations were further performed in winter 2013 and summer 2018. In winter of 2013, WSOC was mainly enriched in PM1 (<1 μm) on clean days and lightly polluted days. In addition, the fine mode maximum shifted from 0.43-0.65 μm to 1.1–2.1 μm with the haze development due to the hygroscopic growth of particles. In summer of 2018, the WSOC was mainly concentrated in PM1, but in a few samples, the maximum size appeared in coarse mode. This difference might due to the different relative humidity and air mass sources. While the formation process of WSOC in winter was affected by photochemical oxidation below 2.1 μm. In 1.1–2.1 μm, it tended to change from photochemical oxidation to aqueous-phase oxidation. For the coarse mode WSOC formation in winter, however, it was mainly affected by heterogeneous processes. The findings advanced our understanding of the annual trends, size distribution and formation processes of WSOC, with significant implications for air pollution control in Beijing and surrounding regions.

Abstract:Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) pollutions are prevalent air quality issues in China. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have significant impact on the formation of O3 and secondary organic aerosols (SOA) contributing PM2.5. Herein, we investigated 54 VOCs, O3 and SOA in Tianjin from June 2017 to May 2019 to explore the non-linear relationship among O3, SOA and VOCs. The monthly patterns of VOCs and SOA concentrations were characterized by peak values during October to March and reached a minimum from April to September, but the observed O3 was exactly the opposite. Machine learning methods resolved the importance of individual VOCs on O3 and SOA that alkenes (mainly ethylene, propylene, and isoprene) have the highest importance to O3 formation; alkanes (Cn, n ≥ 6) and aromatics were the main source of SOA formation. Machine learning methods revealed and emphasized the importance of photochemical consumptions of VOCs to O3 and SOA formation. Ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) calculated by consumed VOCs quantitatively indicated that more than 80% of the consumed VOCs were alkenes which dominated the O3 formation, and the importance of consumed aromatics and alkenes to SOAFP were 40.84% and 56.65%, respectively. Therein, isoprene contributed the most to OFP at 41.45% regardless of the season, while aromatics (58.27%) contributed the most to SOAFP in winter. Collectively, our findings can provide scientific evidence on policymaking for VOCs controls on seasonal scales to achieve effective reduction in both SOA and O3.

The Temporal and Spatial Distribution of the Correlation Between PM2.5 and O3 Contractions in the Urban Atmosphere of China

Abstract:The mass concentrations of fine particles (PM2.5) have decreased significantly in China in recent years, while surface ozone pollution shows an opposite trend. To better understand the combined PM2.5 and O-3 pollution in China's urban atmosphere, the Spearman correlation between PM2.5 mass concentration and daily maximum 8-hour average ozone concentration (MDA8 O-3) was analyzed in this study, as well as the correlation between the concentrations of PM2.5 and O-x (O-x=O-3 +NO2). Since 2015, the number of days when both O-3 and PM2.5 concentrations exceed the national ambient air quality standards has decreased significantly with the decrease in PM2.5 concentrations. The pollution combined O-3 and PM2.5 usually occurs in April and May in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) area. It is worth noting that the correlations between PM2.5 and MDA8 O-3 concentrations depend on regions and seasons on south of 40 degrees N in China. A stronger positive correlation between the concentrations of PM2.5 and MDA8 O-3 in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) area was obtained throughout the year (R>0.6). In the BTH area, this type of relationship occurs only in summer (R similar to 0.5) whereas in winter, a weak negative correlation between PM2.5 and MDA8 O-3 concentrations was observed (R<-0.2). This may be due to a higher primary contribution of PM2.5 and a low concentration of O-3 due to low photochemical production compared to summer in wintertime. For the case of O-3 concentration exceeds national ambient air quality standards in Beijing and Xuzhou, MDA8 O-3 and PM2.5 concentrations correlate positively when PM2.5 = 50 mu g/m(3). In contrast, when PM2.5 > 50 mu g/m(3), a weak negative correlation was observed (R similar to-0.1), suggesting that high concentrations of particulate matter may inhibit O-3 formation on days when is polluted. However, the mechanism of such phenomenon remains confusing due to the complex relationship between the production of O-3 and PM2.5. Meanwhile, PM2.5 and MDA8 O-3 concentrations show a stronger positive correlation during daytime when O-3 concentration exceeds the national ambient air quality standards, which is due to the strong photochemical formation of O-3 as well as secondary aerosols. Furthermore, the positive correlation coefficients between Ox and PM2.5 are significantly higher than those between PM2.5 and MDA8 O-3 in most cities. This result is consistent with the predominant contribution of secondary aerosol to PM2.5 mass concentrations, both in wintertime and in summertime, after the stringent control of primary source emissions. In addition, the chemical concentration of water-soluble inorganic composition in PM2.5 samples collected in urban Beijing was analyzed in this work using ion chromatography in 2020. Comparing the correlation coefficients between PM2.5 and MDA8 O-3 concentrations, there are stronger positive correlations in the concentrations between MDA8 O-3 and the ratio between PM2.5 mass concentration and secondary inorganic aerosols (SNA= sulfate + nitrate + ammonium). This result may be due to the fact that a high concentration of O-3 can promote the formation of secondary aerosols.

Abstract:Organic aerosol (OA) is a significant part of urban fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), and a lack of detailed knowledge of their sources has increasingly hindered the improvement of air quality in China in recent years, as significant reductions have been achieved in inorganic ion constituents. In this study, a wide range of organic molecular markers in PM 2.5 were monitored with a bi-hourly time resolution using a thermal desorption aerosol gas chromatograph system (TAG) in urban Shanghai in winter 2019. The molecular marker data have provided a unique source tracking ability in characterizing the evolution of organic aerosols during nine wintertime episodic events. Episodes primarily influenced by local air masses were characterized with higher proportions in PM 2.5 and mass increments of both primary and secondary OA. Rapid increases in both the absolute mass concentration and relative proportion were observed for primary and secondary OA markers, indicative of vehicle emissions (e.g., alkanes, hopanes, and 2,3-dihydroxy-4-oxopentanoic acid) and cooking activities (e.g., saturated and unsaturated fatty acids and C 9 acids). In comparison, episodes under significant influences of transported air mass were typically associated with a predominant PM 2.5 contribution from secondary inorganic aerosols and enhanced OA contribution from biomass burning activities. The latter was evident from the tracer data (e.g., levoglucosan, aromatic polycarboxylic acids, and nitroaromatic compounds). Secondary OA markers associated with later-generation products of the hydrocarbon oxidation process, such as C 3−5 dicarboxylic acids, were the most deficient during local episodes, while notably enhanced during the episodes under the influence of transported air masses, reflecting the different extent and pathways of atmospheric aging processing. The ability to distinguish the variations in the OA evolution during different types of episodes demonstrates the value of online organic molecular measurements for episodic analysis. The results indicate that control of local urban sources such as vehicular and cooking emissions would lessen severity of local episodes, while regional control of precursors for secondary inorganic aerosols and biomass burning activities would reduce PM 2.5 episodes under synoptic conditions conducive for regional transport.

Abstract:The vertical observation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is an important means to clarify the mechanisms of ozone formation. To explore the vertical evolution of VOCs in summer, a field campaign using a tethered balloon during summer photochemical pollution was conducted in Shijiazhuang from 8 June to 3 July 2019. A total of 192 samples were collected, 23 vertical profiles were obtained, and the concentrations of 87 VOCs were measured. The range of the total VOC concentration was 41–48 ppbv below 600 m. It then slightly increased above 600 m, and rose to 58 ± 52 ppbv at 1000 m. The proportion of alkanes increased with height, while the proportions of alkenes, halohydrocarbons and acetylene decreased. The proportion of aromatics remained almost unchanged. A comparison with the results of a winter field campaign during 8–16 January 2019 showed that the concentrations of all VOCs in winter except for halohydrocarbons were more than twice those in summer. Alkanes accounted for the same proportion in winter and summer. Alkenes, aromatics, and acetylene accounted for higher proportions in winter, while halohydrocarbons accounted for a higher proportion in summer. There were five VOC sources in the vertical direction. The proportions of gasoline vehicular emissions + industrial sources and coal burning were higher in winter. The proportions of biogenic sources + long-range transport, solvent usage, and diesel vehicular emissions were higher in summer. From the surface to 1000 m, the proportion of gasoline vehicular emissions + industrial sources gradually increased.

Abstract:Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) are key factors that further improving air quality in China. It is not well understood to the intricate and nonlinear interactions between PM2.5 and O3 on a national scale over long-term records. Here, we proposed a novel multi-layer network approach to bridge the gap. The variability of O3 precedes that of PM2.5 by one day. The degree, weighted degree, and edge distance follow a power-law decay distribution. O3 concentration in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region and eastern Shandong Province significantly impacts the PM2.5 levels in surrounding areas. Conversely, PM2.5 concentrations in Shandong Province, Henan Province, YRD and Pearl River Delta (PRD) have a strong influence on O3 levels. Moreover, we quantified the seasonality of the interactions and elucidated the underlying reasons. The results revealed the interactions between PM2.5 and O3 are intricately tied to atmospheric oxidation processes. More specifically, in summer, the atmospheric oxidation has a strong impact on the interactions in key regions, such as the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei,YRD region and Fenwei Plain. However, the PRD region experiences a more pronounced effect from atmospheric oxidation on this relationship in winter. These findings demonstrate the crucial of effectively regulating atmospheric oxidation to mitigate PM2.5 and O3 pollution. Our results also serve as a valuable methodological framework for understanding the characteristics of pollutants.

Abstract:High-performance liquid chromatography-size exclusion chromatography and excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy were used to analyze the seasonal variations and potential sources of molecular weight (MW) separated light-absorbing chromophores and fluorophores of water-soluble organic compounds (WSOC) and methanol-soluble organic compounds (MSOC) in PM2.5 in cold areas of northern China. The results showed that the light-absorbing organics in MSOC had larger weight-average MW (Mw) (3.19 kDa) and number-average MW (Mn) (1.13 kDa) compared with WSOC (Mw: 1.41 kDa, Mn: 0.692 kDa). The light-absorption of organics showed a trend of winter>spring>autumn>summer and increased on air pollution days. Three fluorescent components including humic-like, protein-like, and terrestrial humic-like components in WSOC were extracted by parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). Fluorophores in WSOC were dominated by humic-like and terrestrial humic-like components (67.7%). Three fluorescent components extracted from MSOC were low oxidation humic-like, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-like, and protein-like components respectively. It is worth noting that compared with WSOC, MSOC may have a higher human health risk due to the presence of PAH-like components. The combination of PARAFAC and self-organizing map had the potential to identify potential sources of fluorophores. It provided a new perspective for comprehensively exploring the characteristics of fluorophores in aerosols. This study provided a reference for further understanding the chemical composition and optical properties of organic aerosols in the cold regions of northern China.

Abstract:Abstract. Understanding the compositions and evolution of atmospheric organic vapors is crucial for exploring their impact on air quality. However, the molecular and seasonal characteristics of organic vapors in urban areas, with complex anthropogenic emissions and high variability, remain inadequately understood. In this study, we conducted measurements in urban Beijing during 2021–2022 covering four seasons using a Vocus-PTR, an improved Proton Transfer Reaction-Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS). During the measurement period, a total of 895 peaks are observed, and 543 of them can be assigned to formulas. The contribution of CxHyOz species is most significant, which compose up to 53.7 % of the number and 76.0 % of the mass of total organics. With enhanced sensitivity and mass resolution, various sub-ppt level species and organics with multiple oxygens (≥3) were discovered. When counting the species number, 42.2 % of the organics measured are at sub-ppt level and 37.8 % of the species contain 3–8 oxygens. Organic vapors with multiple oxygens mainly consist of intermediate volatility and semi-volatile compounds, and many of them are found to be the multi-generational oxidation products of various volatile organic precursors. In summer, the fast photooxidation process generates organic vapors with multiple oxygens, and leads to an increase in both their concentration and proportion. While in other seasons, the variations of organic vapors with multiple oxygens are closely correlated with those of organic vapors with 1–2 oxygens, which could be heavily influenced by primary emissions. Organic vapors with low oxygen content (≤ 2 oxygens) are comparable to the results obtained by traditional PTR-MS measurements in both urban Beijing and neighboring regions.
Spatiotemporal Variations of PM2.5 Organic Molecular Markers in Five Central Cities of the Yangtze River Delta, East China in Autumn and Winter: Implications for Regional and Local Sources of Organic Aerosols

Abstract:Information on the spatiotemporal variations in the composition and sources of organic aerosols (OA) is needed to identify regional influences and to establish effective control measures. Here, 23-h PM2.5 samples were collected in five central cities of the Yangtze River Delta in eastern China, including Nanjing, Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, and Zhenjiang, every three days from 2020/09/01 to 2021/02/28. Each sample was analyzed for water-soluble inorganic ions, organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and organic molecular markers (OMMs). Generally, the major components of PM2.5, including NH4+, SO42-, NO3-, OC, and EC, exhibited similar temporal patterns across the five cities. In all OMM groups, the concentrations of PAHs, oxygenated PAHs, and secondary products of isoprene showed strong correlations (r = 0.79 ± 0.050-0.93 ± 0.028) and low coefficient of divergence (COD = 0.22 ± 0.024-0.30 ± 0.033) between sampling sites, indicating a homogeneous spatial distribution of industrial emissions and biogenic secondary OA in autumn and winter. Other OMMs showed wider r (e.g., steranes and hopanes, 0.20-0.80) and COD (0.26-0.69) ranges for all site pairs, probably due to the influence of local emissions. Based on the source apportionment results using Positive matrix factorization, the biomass burning factor dominated the contribution to OC and EC in winter and showed strong correlations (r = 0.84 ± 0.063) between the sampling sites, indicating regional transport of emissions from biomass burning and fossil fuel combustion in the heating season. Traffic-related factors had the greatest spatial heterogeneity (r = 0.27 ± 0.19-0.51 ± 0.16) and contributed significantly to OC at their maximum levels.

Abstract:The understanding at a molecular level of ambient secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation is hampered by poorly constrained formation mechanisms and insufficient analytical methods. Especially in developing countries, SOA related haze is a great concern due to its significant effects on climate and human health. We present simultaneous measurements of gas-phase volatile organic compounds (VOCs), oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs), and particle-phase SOA in Beijing. We show that condensation of the measured OOMs explains 26-39% of the organic aerosol mass growth, with the contribution of OOMs to SOA enhanced during severe haze episodes. Our novel results provide a quantitative molecular connection from anthropogenic emissions to condensable organic oxidation product vapors, their concentration in particle-phase SOA, and ultimately to haze formation.

Abstract:Intermediate volatility organic compounds (IVOCs) in outdoor air have been reported in recent years with focus on characterizing IVOCs and their contributions to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Little has been studied on the different behaviors of IVOCs in particulate matter (PM) dominated winter pollution weather and ozone (O-3) dominated summer pollution weather. In this study, we collected and analyzed outdoor airborne IVOCs in an urban location in Shanghai during PM dominated pollution events in winter (ten samples) and O-3 dominated pollution events in summer (22 samples). IVOCs were categorized into n-alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and unspeciated complex mixture (UCM) that includes unspeciated branched alkanes (b-alkanes) and other unidentified IVOCs. In winter samples total IVOCs concentrations were up to 114 mu g/m(3) and UCM IVOCs accounted for 91% +/- 3%, while in summer samples total IVOCs concentrations were only up to 17.2 mu g/m(3) and UCM accounted for 69% +/- 14%. The average concentration of primary IVOCs which are directly from emission sources, was 35.1 +/- 16.1 mu g/m(3) and 4.0 +/- 2.2 mu g/m(3) in winter and summer, respectively. IVOCs were found to have statistically significant positive correlations with PM (PM2.5, PM10) but not with O-3 in both winter and summer samples. Statistically significantly inverse relationships between O-3 and C-12-C-14 n-alkanes and between O-3 and two to three rings PAHs in summer samples were observed, indicating that these relatively more volatile IVOCs might be actively involved in atmospheric photochemical reactions in the atmosphere in summer. Our study revealed different behaviors of IVOCs in winter and summer pollution events in Shanghai; however, more research is needed to better understand the contribution of IVOCs to SOA, and the underlying photochemical reactions of IVOCs during O-3 dominated air pollution events.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play key roles in the formation of particulate matter (PM) and oxidants and hence enhance the summertime air pollution. With data analysis from various field observations (urban station: Haidian, HD; suburb station: Changping, CP; regional background station: Shangdianzi, SDZ) in June 2011, we found that the mean O3 concentrations throughout the observation period can be arranged in order: SDZ>CP>HD. The mean PM concentrations can be arranged in order: HD>CP>SDZ. The mean concentration of total VOCs at HD was close to that at CP, but much higher than that at SDZ. Oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) made the largest portion of VOCs (∼40%) at the three stations, followed by alkanes and alkenes. Good positive correlations between the concentrations of PM and Ox (=O3+NO2) at high air temperature (≥30 °C at HD and CP; ≥28 °C at SDZ) and low RH (≤60%) were found in the daytime (07:00–18:00 LT). However, the PM concentrations were partly negatively correlated with Ox at lower temperatures (≤26 °C at HD and CP; ≤22 °C at SDZ) and higher RH (≥80%). The PM concentrations were found either positively (HD and CP) or negatively (SDZ) correlated with aromatics at high temperature and low RH. The aging degree of air masses at the three stations can be arranged in order: SDZ>CP>HD. This can qualitatively explain the different PM−aromatics correlations. Our data suggested the other groups of VOCs may promote the increase of PM concentrations unless the PM levels become higher than 140 μg m−3 under humid conditions. This study confirms the importance of VOCs in the formation of summertime PM and oxidants over Beijing.
