Abstract:After the publication of the youth version of The Peony Pavilion in 2004, Kunqu, a classical Chinese theatre, experienced a significant resurgence in both popularity and esteem. This renewal instigated a stronger emphasis on inventive and contemporary adaptations of the traditional repertoire. As culture evolves and advances, there is no doubt that classical theatre must also adapt to keep up with the times. The primary aim of this essay is to examine a contemporary phenomenon through a research methodology that compares and contrasts traditional and modern theatre styles. Specifically, this research focuses on the modern rendition of The Peony Pavilion, a renowned Kunqu opera that illustrates how traditional Chinese theatre can be adjusted to modern contexts while preserving its allure and importance. Additionally, this research project investigates the qualities and mechanisms of modernization in classical Chinese theatre. By concentrating on The Peony Pavilion, this study seeks to disclose how Kunqu integrates and embraces change while retaining its fundamental aspects. As a result, the research aids in crafting efficient techniques for modifying classical art forms to contemporary settings, guaranteeing that these traditional art forms remain significant and appealing over time. This will meet the increasing demand for contemporary performances while ensuring the longevity and preservation of classical arts in the ever-evolving 21st century.

Abstract:The study of Chinese Kunqu Opera over the past ninety years may be divided into three phases, from the early years of the Public of China to the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan was the first phase. The study of Kunqu came into vogue and flowered at the thirties by opportunity. From the outbreak of the War to the advent of the Great Cultural Revolution was the second phase that was at low tide and the success of the Fifteen Guan had brought forth the performance and study of Kunqu for a short time. The study of Kunqu had made great progress in several ways since the seventies and is now confronted with many plights and challenges. Too much attention was paid to the study of literati, the qu in theater, the standard Kunju and too little to the study of troupers, the qu in refinement singing and folk Kunju in the history of Kunqu. And the theory of Juzhong and theory of the West theatre had swayed most of the study.

Abstract:The history of the earliest documented Chinese opera performances in California (1852) and their successors during the following decades reveal how Chinese theatre in the diaspora was produced and consumed by Chinese immigrants, European visitors and Americans. On the one hand, a familiar repertoire eased the nostalgia and reinforced the national consciousness of Chinese immigrants, while on the other, the ethnocentric reading and writing of Chinese theatre helped establish an eternal frontier in the ‘old West’ to protect American national identity in late nineteenth-century California's periods of economic and political turmoil. Finally, the exoticism of California's Chinese theatre in America contributed to a European sense of American cultural uniqueness. Chinese opera performances played a crucial role in the invention of Californian identity.

Since the early 20th century, the modernization of xiqu has been continuously transforming the tradition of Chinese theatre, which nevertheless has exerted transformative power on the real world socially, politically, and culturally. The reform of traditional theatre in the 1950s and early 1960s was so radical and comprehensive that xiqu has undergone extensive changes in terms of repertoire, performance conventions, play creation, management, and touring. It is perhaps not much an exaggeration to say that “xiqu today is, to a significant extent, the legacy of a seventeen-year tradition” (331). By having historical and contextual analysis integrated with close reading of some individual cases, Siyuan Liu’s study makes a unique and significant contribution to explaining why the reform had to take place, how it progressed, and what impact it had made both inside and outside the circle of traditional theatre. The xiqu reform is widely known for its policy and practice of gairen, gaixi, gaizhi (reforming practitioners, repertoire, and organizational structure), which constitutes the underlining structure throughout the chapters in Siyuan Liu’s monograph. The first two chapters deal with the censorship of content and purification of theatricality in performance, both of which have direct impact on the training and performance of actors and actresses, especially when so few traditional plays were allowed to be staged. The revision of plays, as discussed in chapter 3, is mainly subject to political ideology, but it is also manipulated under certain conditions to promote cultural exchanges with the outside world for the sake of boosting the image of a new socialist China. While jingju has so far been the major concern, the following two chapters address important issues in reforming various regional genres of xiqu and the so-called “outdated” style of performance, namely scenario plays. In the final chapter, the difficult and highly controversial process of transition from star-centered troupes to state-owned companies is under close scrutiny. It is worth pointing out that the three aspects of xiqu reform are not separate but rather complementary and supplementary to each other. Fundamentally, it is the xiqu practitioners that are the main target of reform; therefore, what they experience during the reform period turns out to be most intriguing and demands a great deal of critical attention. While embedded within a broad and comprehensive scope, each chapter of the book is devoted to careful analysis of a couple of representative examples, which exhibits a distinctive feature of uniting different perspectives, heterogeneous but mutually reinforcing. From a historical perspective, the xiqu reform is set against the traditions of Chinese theatre in feudal China, under the New Cultural [End Page 346] Movement in the early Republican era, and in the liberated areas under the governance of CCP in the 1930s and 1940s. In particular, the so-called “Yan’an paradigm,” which advocated the notion that literature and arts should serve the great mass of the proletariat, was adopted and even strengthened as the dominant ideology for reforming xiqu after new China was founded. Nevertheless, the policies concerning xiqu reform during the seventeen years underwent significant shifts due to that the implementation of policies was oftentimes unsatisfactory, resulting in some extremely radical measures and wrong decisions. For the clarity of historical analysis, some important events are highlighted, especially those in relation to major policy-making, the creation process of representative plays and their performances. For readers informed about the new development in event theories by Deleuze and Žižek, this approach is especially effective and persuasive as it is conducive to discussions on the emergence, uncertainties, and performative effects in carrying out the xiqu reform. From a comparative perspective, the xiqu reform was not an isolated phenomenon, exclusively limited to China, but rather closely related to theatre history in other parts of the world. Peculiarities of the mutual influence of Italian and Chinese musical theater tradition in historical development

Abstract:Statement of the problem. Modern opera performance art in China is closely related to the national theater tradition, which has a thousand-year history. Despite the fact that Italian (and generally European) musical and dramatic art has been known in China for more than a few century, the public did not perceive it for a long time due to significant differences in many aspects: from stage dramaturgy, vocal roles to behavioral norms in the theater institutions. This study draws historical parallels between Italian opera and national Chinese music-theatre art and examines attempts to adapt Italian vocal art to Chinese. Objectives, methods, novelty of the research. In this investigation, we tried to find common and distinctive features in Italian and Chinese musical theater by comparison, as well as to identify the factors that influence the perception of the theater work by the Chinese public. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time the path taken to adapt Italian vocal art to the Chinese language, the national musical theater and its audience is analyzed, and the role of tradition in this process. The main research method is comparative, with the help of which the common and distinctive features of Chinese and Italian musical theater are revealed; methods of historical musicology and cultural studies were also used. Research results. The development of Italian and Chinese musical theater in certain historical periods took place in parallel, so they have a number of similar typological features. Both Chinese and Italian theaters synthesize different types of art: singing, ballet, visual series (decoration, costumes), dramatic action. At the same time, they are fundamentally different manifestations of theatrical art. In Chinese opera, the visual component is of great importance – costumes, make-up, decor, etc., and the content and plot vicissitudes are deliberately simplified so that the audience is not distracted, but can enjoy the spectacle. The difference of Chinese opera is circus art: the actors had to have acrobatic and fighting skills and impress the audience with them. In Italian opera at the stage of its formation, the visual series was given great importance, but due to the fact that the authors of the first opera models (Florentines) considered as a model the Greek drama with its idea of moral improvement through catharsis, its dramaturgy is radically different from that of the Chinese theater; therefore, tragedies and dramas were not perceived by the Chinese audience who went to the theater to be entertained and enjoy the skill of the actors. For quite a long period after the penetration of European culture, the Chinese public did not perceive works of Western art, treated them as exotic and often did not understand their essence, aesthetics and value in general. The main obstacle was usually the language, but also the content of the theatrical works of European playwrights, translated into Chinese, did not find a response in the audience, despite the rather significant commonality in plots, themes, and issues. The public did not understand complex ideas that were accompanied by dramatic events or had a tragic ending. Conclusion. Italian and Chinese opera have many common features, but differ in their basis, and the Chinese audience did not perceive Western art for so long because of the fundamental difference in the approach to the visual and content aspects. The originality of Chinese theater drama consists in maximum visualization, which distinguishes it from European drama, in which the content is the basis of the work. The formation of modern opera performing art in China took place in the middle of the 20th century, and this process has a distinctive feature: modern national opera in European traditions was created in order to interest the Chinese public, to draw their attention to the new art. The first example of such an opera (yangban xi) – “The White-Haired Girl “(1945), created by the team of authors of the Academy of Fine Arts named after Lu Xin, became popular among the Chinese, which confirmed the correctness of the creative approach that combined European forms and Chinese performance traditions. In addition, the work was adapted for plastic (ballet), screen and traditional theater (xìqǔ) arts. The appearance of such productions contributed to the fact that the public gradually got used to European opera, and today Chinese opera art is widely represented on the national and world stages. In the years since the appearance of the first Western-style national opera, Chinese singers have mastered various classical vocal styles: Italian bel canto, traditional Chinese singing, Chinese bel canto, and now represent their own national vocal school on world stages.

Abstract:One of the most popular folk operas in China is the Nuo opera. Nuo opera, which is distinguished by its distinct elements such as vicious masks, peculiar clothing and jewelry, peculiar language spoken during performances, and enigmatic scenarios, has been named one of China's intangible cultural legacies. The opera is a religious act that is fundamental to the Chinese folk religion known as Nuoism. Nuo opera is performed to ward off evil spirits, illnesses, and other influences. It also serves as a prayer request to the gods for favors. Nuo opera features singing and dancing, as well as masks and costumes for the performers. This research explores Nuo opera, a traditional performance art form that is deeply established in the cultural and social structure of Guizhou using a cross-disciplinary technique that unites art and culture. Sociocultural influence, the study examines how, in a setting that is changing quickly, Nuo Opera acts as an interface for social unity and cultural continuity. The distinct features that this culture exhibits, together with the numerous benefits that the society's sustained growth has brought subsequent such as cultural, social, and economic values, among other significant elements. This study emphasizes interdisciplinary analysis, and its goals are to improve our understanding of the cultural value of Nuo Opera and provide useful insights for ensuring its persistent presence and significance in Guizhou society.
