Abstract:cultural geographies, Ahead of Print. The Sound of Water (https://flow-mer.org.au/napnap) microsite documents an environmental intervention at Nap Nap Swamp, a wetland in the western reaches of Australia's Murrumbidgee River. A collaboration between a designer (Whitelaw) and an ecologist (Wassens), it was supported by the Commonwealth Environmental Water Office. We use audiovisual data storytelling to engage audiences with Nap Nap as it transitions from a dry to wet state. Focusing on a 9-day period in mid-2020, we combine audio and hydrological data to show the ecosystem's response to a managed environmental flow, narrating this change through the wetland's charismatic frog species, including the threatened Southern Bell Frog. In this paper we reflect on the technical and creative contributions of the project in visualising environmental audio, as well as its significance for wider practice. We highlight the value of creatively re-purposing ecological data and the importance of multi-stakeholder networks, and we argue that our celebration in this project of environmental management, intervention and care should be a key concern for future digital ecologies practices.

Abstract:Soundscape is a new interdisciplinary field of landscape and acoustics. This paper is intended to study the relationship between soundscape and culture. That is, the Chinese culture's pursuit of acoustic beauty from three aspects as poetries, writings and drawings. It is demonstrated by the case study of soundscape in West Lake scenic area, with particular emphasis on humane attribute. The study has approached by three steps as classification - case study - promotion to region. The major attractions of West Lake scenic area is divided into natural and artificial categories, and the typical cases selected are Orioles Singing in the Willows and Evening Bell Ringing at Nanping hill. The two cases are analyzed from two aspects as the cultural background and humanities artistic conception, in order to prove the subject. And the importance of soundscape culture research to the construction of West Lake scenic area is declared further.

Abstract:Acoustic monitoring has proven to be an effective tool for monitoring biotic soundscapes in the marine, terrestrial, and aquatic realms. Recently it has been suggested that it could also be an effective method for monitoring soil soundscapes, but has been used in very few studies, primarily in temperate and polar regions. We present the first study of soil soundscapes using passive acoustic monitoring in tropical forests, using a novel analytical pipeline allowing for the use of in-situ recording of soundscapes with minimal soil disturbance. We found significant differences in acoustic index values between burnt and unburnt forests and the first indications of a diel cycle in soil soundscapes. These promising results and methodological advances highlight the potential of passive acoustic monitoring for large-scale and long-term monitoring of soil biodiversity. We use the results to discuss research priorities, including relating soil biophony to community structure and ecosystem function, and the use of appropriate hardware and analytical techniques.

Abstract:The soundscape is a complex arrangement of sounds originating from animals and the environment. It is considered a reliable proxy for ecosystem niche structure at the community level. Acoustic communities of anuran species include advertising males, which compete in acoustic space for conspecific females. Stochastic niche theory predicts that all local niches are occupied, and the acoustic community is species-saturated. Acoustic niches, which include the spectral and temporal call structure and diel and seasonal patterns of call activity, are of similar breadth with small overlap. We tested these predictions in four communities inhabiting pristine wetlands at 2546-3188 m a.s.l. in the Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. We sampled 74 days of hourly 5 min recordings of the local soundscape (September 2019-March 2020) using passive automated monitoring devices (Songmeter SM4). We identified species based on the advertisement call features and measured call activity as calls per minute. The communities included 4-6, species depending on wetland structure, with a shared stock of three species (Hyperolius castaneus, H. glandicolor, Leptopelis kivuensis). Independent of elevation, niche breadth for call features was similar among species and overlap reduced by partitioning the frequency range used. The diel and seasonal niche breadth of specific call activity varied according to the local temperature regime at different altitudes representing the variable part of the acoustic niche. We conclude that communities are indeed species-saturated and acoustic niches differ primarily by the fixed call features remaining locally adaptable by the modulation of the call activity pattern, corroborating the predictions of the stochastic niche theory.

Abstract:Acoustic signals constitute a source of information that can be used to measure the spatial and temporal distributions of vocal organisms in ecosystems. Measuring and tracking those species that produce sounds can reveal important information about the environment. Acoustic signals have been used for many years to census vocal organisms. Moreover, acoustics can be used to compute indexes for measuring biodiversity and the level of anthropogenic disturbance. We developed the software and system that automate the process of cataloging acoustic sensor observations into the Remote Environmental Assessment Laboratory (REAL) digital library that can be accessed through a website (http://lib.real.msu.edu). The REAL digital library enables access and analysis of collected acoustic sensor observations. We report on current library status and the mechanisms that enable the selection, extraction and analysis of acoustic data to support investigations on automating species census as well as measuring diversity and disturbance. We implemented numeric and symbolic search mechanisms and unsupervised learning techniques to ease retrieval of acoustic information, including recordings and processed data, pertinent to visitor goals.

Abstract:Autonomous sensors provide opportunities to observe organisms across spatial and temporal scales that humans cannot directly observe. By processing large data streams from autonomous sensors with deep learning methods, researchers can make novel and important natural history discoveries. In this study, we combine automated acoustic monitoring with deep learning models to observe breeding-associated activity in the endangered Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog (<i>Rana sierrae</i>), a behavior that current surveys do not measure. By deploying inexpensive hydrophones and developing a deep learning model to recognize breeding-associated vocalizations, we discover three undocumented <i>R. sierrae</i> vocalization types and find an unexpected temporal pattern of nocturnal breeding-associated vocal activity. This study exemplifies how the combination of autonomous sensor data and deep learning can shed new light on species' natural history, especially during times or in locations where human observation is limited or impossible.

Abstract:The restorative qualities of nature (amenity values) have been explored for their benefits to human wellbeing. Yet methodology to assess restorative qualities is generally limited to visual stimuli in laboratory situations. Little is known about the influence of other sensory elements or specific environmental conditions on perceptions of amenity and finding data collection methods that encapsulate these complexities is challenging. This study used a novel methodological approach utilising in-situ voice recordings to explore the relationship between human perceptions of amenity and biodiversity levels of urban river corridors in Melbourne, Australia. The research methodology collected in-situ responses to natural stimuli. This enabled the influence of biodiversity levels on public perceptions of the amenity value of urban river corridors to be explored. To investigate this, participants were taken to two sites along a river, one with high biodiversity and one with low biodiversity. Participants walked alone for 30 min along the river corridor recording their experiences on portable voice recorders as they travelled. Utilising voice recordings enabled the collection of rich in-situ experiences of amenity and enhanced self-reporting written responses. This method also gave voice to the influence of other sensory elements along with the visual and allowed the researchers to better appreciate the immersed experiences of the participants. This method provides a means of progressing amenity and perception studies from laboratory settings to real experiences of amenity. It illuminates the links between human wellbeing benefits and contact with biodiversity and can facilitate greater synergy between land management and public perceptions.

Abstract:Extensive ecosystem degradation and increasing urbanization are altering human relationships with nature. To explore these trends, we created a transdisciplinary, narrative-led podcast series produced by the BBC, called Forest 404. The series explored the implications of a world without nature. An online experimental component mobilized audience participation (n = 7,596) to assess responses to natural soundscapes with and without abiotic, biotic, and poetic elements across five biomes. Conditions featuring the sounds of wildlife, such as bird song, were perceived to be more psychologically restorative than those without. Participants' personal lived experiences were strongly related to these outcomes; those who had memories triggered by the sounds were more likely to find them psychologically restorative and exhibited a greater motivation to preserve them. Moreover, the effects of both soundscape composition and memories on preservation behavior were partially mediated by restorative potential; respondents were more likely to want to protect the sounds they heard if they thought they might offer therapeutic outcomes. Our findings highlight the value of art-science collaborations and demonstrate how maintaining contact with the natural world can promote wellbeing and foster behaviors that protect planetary health.

Abstract:The sound spectrum of water configures representative marks of various environments, which define a sound heritage with scientific, cultural, emotional, sensorial and educational value. From this perspective, river environments comprise a wide spectrum of sonic resonances. This study, contextualized within the field of geo-sonority research, considers the recording and analysis of water through several samples from the upper basin of the Miño River. The objectives are to advocate for the role of sonority as part of the intangible heritage, to explore its character in the fluvial environment of inland Galicia, and to contribute to the preservation of the sonic marks of water as sounds inherent to the identity of an area. The methodology applied consists of phases of field recording, the creation of databases and of phonic analysis. Water in its sound form, from the drop rhythmically repeating to the roar of a waterfall, fills an audible sound spectrum that characterizes soundscapes. By registering, documenting, and analyzing the sounds of the water, we advance in the knowledge of the diversity of the sound environments in the river basin of the Miño River.

Abstract:Acoustic sensing has been hailed as a game-changer for detecting furtive wildlife, but uptake has been constrained by the laborious process of reviewing resultant torrents of audio data. To inform the design of interactive interfaces for reviewing audio recordings, we explored how people interact with aural and visual media about birds. We observed how twelve participants with different levels of interest in birds engaged with vocalization recordings, visualizations of bird calls, photographs, and range maps of three species. By conducting thematic analysis, we identified a variety of Challenges of Exploration and Benefits of a Media Assortment. We contribute lessons for designing to Bridge Knowledge & Context and to Facilitate Long-term Engagement with audio in ways that are fun, accessible, and informative. We provide explicit guidance for designers to diversify how citizen scientists interact with nature through audio as they move from engagement to conservation action.
Non-native species change the tune of tundra soils: Novel access to soundscapes of the Arctic earthworm invasion

Abstract:Over the last decade, an increasing number of studies have used soundscapes to address diverse ecological questions. Sound represents one of the few sources of information capable of providing in situ insights into processes occurring within opaque soil matrices. To date, the use of soundscapes for soil macrofauna monitoring has been experimentally tested only in controlled laboratory environments. Here we assess the validity of laboratory predictions and explore the use of soil soundscape proxies for monitoring soil macrofauna (i.e., earthworm) activities in an outdoor context. In a common garden experiment in northern Sweden, we constructed outdoor mesocosm plots (N = 36) containing two different Arctic vegetation types (meadow and heath) and introduced earthworms to half of these plots. Earthworms substantially altered the ambient soil soundscape under both vegetation types, as measured by both traditional soundscape indices and frequency band power levels, although their acoustic impacts were expressed differently in heath versus meadow soils. While these findings support the as-of-yet untapped promise of using belowground soundscape analyses to monitor soil ecosystem health, direct acoustic emissions from earthworm activities appear to be an unlikely proxy for tracking worm activities at daily timescales. Instead, earthworms indirectly altered the soil soundscape by 're-engineering' the soil matrix: an effect that was dependent on vegetation type. Our findings suggest that long-term (i.e., seasonal) earthworm activities in natural soil settings can likely be monitored indirectly via their impacts on soundscape measures and acoustic indices. Analyzing soil soundscapes may enable larger-scale monitoring of high-latitude soils and is directly applicable to the specific case of earthworm invasions within Arctic soils, which has recently been identified as a potential threat to the resilience of high-latitude ecosystems. Soil soundscapes could also offer a novel means to monitor soils and soil-plant-faunal interactions in situ across diverse pedogenic, agronomic, and ecological systems.
Sounds of the underground reflect soil biodiversity dynamics across a grassy woodland restoration chronosequence

Abstract:Fifty-nine percent of the world’s species inhabit the soil. However, soils are degrading at unprecedented rates, necessitating efficient, cost-effective, and minimally intrusive biodiversity monitoring methods to aid in their restoration. Ecoacoustics is emerging as a promising tool for detecting and monitoring soil biodiversity, recently proving effective in a temperate forest restoration context. However, understanding the efficacy of soil ecoacoustics in other ecosystems and bioregions is essential. Here, we applied ecoacoustics tools and indices (Acoustic Complexity Index, Bioacoustic Index, Normalised Difference Soundscape Index) to measure soil biodiversity in an Australian grassy woodland restoration chronosequence. We collected 240 soil acoustic samples from two cleared plots (continuously cleared through active management), two woodland restoration plots (revegetated 14-15 years ago), and two remnant vegetation plots over 5 days at Mount Bold, South Australia. We used a below-ground sampling device and sound attenuation chamber to record soil invertebrate communities, which were also manually counted. We show that acoustic complexity and diversity were significantly higher in revegetated and remnant plots than in cleared plots, both in-situ and in sound attenuation chambers. Acoustic complexity and diversity were also strongly positively associated with soil invertebrate abundance and richness, and each chronosequence age class supported distinct invertebrate communities. Our results provide support that soil ecoacoustics can effectively measure soil biodiversity in woodland restoration contexts. This technology holds promise in addressing the global need for effective soil biodiversity monitoring methods and protecting our planet’s most diverse ecosystems.

Abstract:The National Park Service manages over 400 units across the United States, each with unique resource protection needs. Many parks have natural resource conservation priorities that include the protection of natural soundscapes and the sound-producing species who contribute to them. It is challenging, however, to translate terabytes of raw audio into applied information for the diverse research and management questions posed by individual parks. Recent advances in terrestrial bioacoustics are making this process more tractable, particularly as BirdNET has emerged as an extensible off-the-shelf tool equipped to detect diverse assemblages of sound-producing species across varied park ecosystems. We illustrate the applied utility of using and adapting this emerging tool in combination with open code and visualizations to answer multi-taxa questions about occurrence, phenology, and wildlife responses to management. This work demonstrates both the iterative nature and challenges inherent to keeping a federal agency astride the leading edge in a rapidly progressing, data-heavy field, amid a backdrop of global change.

Abstract:Biodiversity monitoring has entered an era of 'big data', exemplified by a near‐continuous collection of sounds, images, chemical and other signals from organisms in diverse ecosystems. Such data streams have the potential to help identify new threats, assess the effectiveness of conservation interventions, as well as generate new ecological insights. However, appropriate analytical methods are often still missing, particularly with respect to characterizing cyclical temporal patterns. Here, we present a framework for characterizing and analysing ecological responses that represent nonstationary, complex temporal patterns and demonstrate the value of using Fourier transforms to decorrelate continuous data points. In our example, we use a framework based on three approaches (spectral analysis, magnitude squared coherence, and principal component analysis) to characterize differences in tropical forest soundscapes within and across sites and seasons in Gabon. By reconstructing the underlying, cyclic behaviour of the soundscape for each site, we show how one can identify circadian patterns in acoustic activity. Soundscapes in the dry season had a complex diel cycle, requiring multiple harmonics to represent daily variation, while in the wet season there was less variance attributable to the daily cyclic patterns. Our framework can be applied to most continuous, or near‐continuous ecological data collected at a fine temporal resolution, allowing ecologists to explore patterns of temporal autocorrelation at multiple levels for biologically meaningful trends. Such methods will become indispensable as biological big data are used to understand the impact of anthropogenic pressures on biodiversity and to inform efforts to mitigate them.

Abstract:Our planet is facing unprecedented adversity due to the global impacts of climate change and an emerging sixth mass extinction. These impacts are exacerbated by population and industrial growth, where increased resource extraction is required to meet our insatiable demands. Yet, the tangible elements of our lone inhabited planet in the solar system are not the only things disappearing or being modified. The sounds of Earth are being altered in ways that may never be recovered. Indeed, we occupy a noisier world in this age of machines that comes at a great expense in the form of sonic extinctions. It is profoundly apparent, yet not widely recognized, that conservation efforts must consider the importance of the sonic environment (i.e., sonosphere). Although sound has been integral to life for millions of years, our understanding of its ecological role has only just begun. Sounds are one of the most important extensions of the organismic inner world, becoming testimonials of environmental complexity, integration, and relationships between apparently separated parts. From a semiotic perspective, sounds are signals utilized by many organisms to save energy in patrolling, defending, exploring, and navigating their surroundings. Sounds are tools that establish dynamic biological and ecological competencies through refined partitioning in the natural selection process of evolution. Ecoacoustics is a recent scientific discipline that aims to investigate the role of sound in ecological processes. Despite its youth, Ecoacoustics has had rapid theoretical and applied growth, consolidating a diverse array of research on the ecology of sounds across many disciplines. Here, we present how Ecoacoustics plays a significant role in conservation ecology by exploring the discipline's theoretical framework, new descriptors of sonic complexity, and innovative methods for supporting conservation efforts from singular species to entire landscapes across local and global scales. The combination of automated recording units and ecoacoustic indices present a very promising approach to the study of remote areas, rare species, and data rich analyses. While Ecoacoustics scientists continue to explore this new scientific horizon, we encourage others to consider Ecoacoustics in their conservation agendas because of its application to the study and management of terrestrial, marine, and freshwater habitats.
Virtual Reality Technology in Analysis of the Sarek National Park Soundscape in Sweden

Abstract:The paper presents an in-depth analysis of the soundscape within Sarek National Park, the oldest national park in Europe, situated in Lapland, northern Sweden. The comprehensive acoustic measurements, ambisonic recordings, and 360X video recordings were carried out during a scientific expedition in the summer of 2020. The aim of the paper is to show the soundscape analysis of carefully selected characteristic locations in various parts of the valley. The paper extensively discusses the findings derived from the recorded data using both classical acoustic methods and the soundscape approach. The classic acoustic parameters, commonly employed in environmental acoustics as well as eco-acoustic indices such as: ACI (acoustic complexity index), ADI (acoustic diversity index), AEI (acoustic evenness index), NDSI (normalized difference soundscape index), BIO (energy level of biophony), amplitude index (M), and total entropy (H) were calculated. To gain further insights, listening tests, facilitated through virtual reality tools, were conducted, enabling participants to engage in soundwalk experiences. By employing a combination of traditional acoustic methods and innovative soundscape approaches, the paper presents a holistic evaluation of the auditory environment in Sarek National Park. The main contribution of the presented research is providing new data from the unique, geographically inaccessible region of the world, the Sarek National Park. This research not only enriches our understanding of the national park’s soundscape but also offers valuable insights into the interaction between the natural environment and human perception of sound.

Abstract:The sounds produced by animals have been a topic of research into animal behaviour for a very long time. If acoustic signals are undoubtedly a vehicle for exchanging information between individuals, environmental sounds embed as well a significant level of data related to the ecology of populations, communities and landscapes. The consideration of environmental sounds for ecological investigations opens up a field of research that we define with the term ecoacoustics. In this paper, we draw the contours of ecoacoustics by detailing: the main theories, concepts and methods used in ecoacoustic research, and the numerous outcomes that can be expected from the ecological approach to sound. Ecoacoustics has several theoretical and practical challenges, but we firmly believe that this new approach to investigating ecological processes will generate abundant and exciting research programs.

Acoustic codes from a rural sanctuary: How ecoacoustic events operate across a landscape scale

Abstract:Sonotopes are the acoustic patches of a soundscape, composed by different occurrences of geophonies, biophonies, and technophonies. According an ecosemiotic perspective, ecoacoustic events (EEs) are the vehicles from the attribution of meaning to the emergent sonotopes and work as neural codes. The process of encoding is suggested to be active between the perception of sonotopes and EE detection. In Ortolano Rural Sanctuary, from a grid of 12 acoustic digital recorders (ADRs) at an average distance of 30 m each with a microphone set to receive sounds from a near acoustic field, 824,160 one-minute acoustic files were obtained from October 2017 to September 2018. From these files, using the combination of three acoustic complexity indices (ACIft, ACIft evenness, and ACItf evenness), through the ecoacoustic event detection and identification (EEDI) procedure, more than 200 EEs on average per ADR were extracted during this period. The EEs were seasonally aggregated with a significant separation between fall-winter and spring-summer periods. Rain and wind were important in EE composition according to location and seasonality. The number of EEs detected from just one month to three months was 57% of the total, and the first of the nine classes of ACIft belonged to 78% of all classes of abundance. The EEs and ACItf similarity were not correlated with the distance between ADRs, confirming the correctness of the near-field approach to detect sounds from landscapes and EE spatial independence. The ranging capacities to distinguish distance from sound sources and to discriminate the temporal and frequential patterns of acoustic signals are some of the mechanisms that species use to detect and encode environmental acoustic complexity. Species are supposed to use EE to explore and assess the acoustic habitat and probably to obtain mental maps of the surroundings they must move around using an acoustic exploration.
