Abstract:Data-driven approaches have achieved remarkable success in different applications, however, their use in solving PDE has only recently emerged. Herein, we present the potential fluid method, which uses existing data to nest physical meanings into mathematical iterative processes. Potential fluid method is suitable for PDE, such as CFD problems, including Burgers? equation. Potential fluid method can iteratively determine the steady-state space distribution of PDE. For mathematical reasons, we compare the potential fluid method with the finite difference method and give a detailed explanation.

Abstract:In the present paper we give a brief summary of some recent theoretical advances in the treatment of inhomogeneous fluids and methods which have applications in the study of dynamical properties of liquids in situations of extreme confinement, such as nanopores, nanodevices, etc. The approach obtained by combining kinetic and density functional methods is microscopic, fully self-consistent and allows to determine both configurational and flow properties of dense fluids. The theory predicts the correct hydrodynamic behavior and provides a practical and numerical tool to determine how the transport properties are modified when the length scales of the confining channels are comparable with the size of the molecules. The applications range from the dynamics of simple fluids under confinement, to that of neutral binary mixtures and electrolytes where the theory in the limit of slow gradients reproduces the known phenomenological equations such as the Planck-Nernst-Poisson and the Smoluchowski equations. The approach here illustrated allows for fast numerical solution of the evolution equations for the one-particle phase-space distributions by means of the weighted density lattice Boltzmann method and is particularly useful when one considers flows in complex geometries.

Abstract:The statistical nature of discrete fluid molecules with random thermal motion so far has not been considered in mainstream fluid mechanics based on Navier-Stokes equations, wherein fluids have been treated as a continuum breaking into many macroscopically infinitely small (but microscopically large enough) mass elements with their motion only characterized by center-of-mass velocity. Here we provide a Statistical Mechanical approach to address fluid dynamics by considering statistical velocity distribution of discrete molecules within macroscopically infinitely small volume elements as well as their center-of-mass velocity. Dynamics equations governing the evolution of physical variables have been proposed, Green's functions have been obtained and linear response theory has been applied to study physical situations with external heat perturbation. It is found that the propagation of heat, center-of-mass motion and sound are intrinsically integrated in Statistical fluid dynamics. This work lays down the foundation for applications of Statistical fluid mechanics.

Abstract:This paper presents a kinetic theory for modeling the vertical profile of particle concentration in dilute and dense solid-liquid flow conditions. The kinetic theory properly describes the mechanism of suspended sediment transport over a wider range of conditions and gives more detailed microscopic information than previous theories. Experimental data have been measured using laser Doppler anemometry. The results an in agreement with measurements by Wang and Qian in 1989, Michalik in 1973, and Segre and Silberberg in 1962. The present work makes a special contribution in predicting the particle concentration distribution in a dense liquid-particle flow with reasonable accuracy.

Abstract:The kinetic theory for a fluid of hard spheres which undergo endothermic and/or exothermic reactions with mass transfer is developed. The exact balance equations for concentration, density, velocity and temperature are derived. The Enskog approximation is discussed and used as the basis for the derivation, via the Chapman-Enskog procedure, of the Navier-Stokes-reaction equations under various assumptions about the speed of the chemical reactions. It is shown that the phenomenological description consisting of a reaction-diffusion equation with a convective coupling to the Navier-Stokes equations is of limited applicability.

Abstract:Kinetic approaches, i.e., methods based on the lattice Boltzmann equations, have long been recognized as an appealing alternative for solving incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in computational fluid dynamics. However, such approaches have not been widely adopted in graphics mainly due to the underlying inaccuracy, instability and inflexibility. In this paper, we try to tackle these problems in order to make kinetic approaches practical for graphical applications. To achieve more accurate and stable simulations, we propose to employ the non-orthogonal central-moment-relaxation model, where we develop a novel adaptive relaxation method to retain both stability and accuracy in turbulent flows. To achieve flexibility, we propose a novel continuous-scale formulation that enables samples at arbitrary resolutions to easily communicate with each other in a more continuous sense and with loose geometrical constraints, which allows efficient and adaptive sample construction to better match the physical scale. Such a capability directly leads to an automatic sample construction which generates static and dynamic scales at initialization and during simulation, respectively. This effectively makes our method suitable for simulating turbulent flows with arbitrary geometrical boundaries. Our simulation results with applications to smoke animations show the benefits of our method, with comparisons for justification and verification.

Kinetic Analysis of the Constitutive Relationships for the Particle Phase in Dilute Solid/liquid Two-Phase Flows

Abstract:The kinetic theory for solid/liquid two phase flows assumes that the particle phase can be described by the Boltzmann equation. A force analysis of a particle in a turbulent two phase flow was used to develop a second order approximate solution to the Boltzmann equation and the constitutive relationships for the particle phase by analogy with the kinetic theory for gases. Though the force on a particle exerted by the liquid depends on the fluctuating velocities of both phases, both the particle velocity distribution function and the constitutive relationships have the same form as those for rapid granular flows in the inertial limit of particle motion, in which the particle behavior is dominated by the mean liquid velocity and the mutual collisions among particles. This limit can be approximately realized in dilute solid/liquid two phase flows with heavy coarse particles.

Abstract:Polydisperse gas-solid flows, which is notoriously difficult to model due to the complex gas-particle and particle-particle interactions, are widely encountered in industry. In this article, a refined kinetic theory for polydisperse flow is developed, which features single-parameter Chapman-Enskog expansion (the Knudsen number) and exact calculation of the integrations related to pair distribution function of particle velocity without any mathematical approximations. The Navier-Stokes order constitutive relations for multifluid modeling of polydisperse gas-solid flow are then obtained analytically, including the solid stress tensor, the solid-solid drag force, the granular heat flux and the energy dissipation rate. Finally, the model is preliminarily validated by comparing to the discrete element simulation data of one-dimensional granular shear flow and by showing that the hydrodynamic characteristics of gas-solid flows in a bubbling fluidized bed containing bidisperse particles can be successfully predicted.

Abstract:Multiphase flows exhibit a large realm of complex behaviors such as bubbling, glugging, wetting, and splashing which emerge from air-water and water-solid interactions. Current fluid solvers in graphics have demonstrated remarkable success in reproducing each of these visual effects, but none have offered a model general enough to capture all of them concurrently. In contrast, computational fluid dynamics have developed very general approaches to multiphase flows, typically based on kinetic models. Yet, in both communities, there is dearth of methods that can simulate density ratios and Reynolds numbers required for the type of challenging real-life simulations that movie productions strive to digitally create, such as air-water flows. In this article, we propose a kinetic model of the coupling of the Navier-Stokes equations with a conservative phase-field equation, and provide a series of numerical improvements over existing kinetic-based approaches to offer a general multiphase flow solver. The resulting algorithm is embarrassingly parallel, conservative, far more stable than current solvers even for real-life conditions, and general enough to capture the typical multiphase flow behaviors. Various simulation results are presented, including comparisons to both previous work and real footage, to highlight the advantages of our new method.

Average turbulence dynamics from a one-parameter kinetic theory

Abstract:We show theoretically that the mean turbulent dynamics can be described by a kinetic theory representation with a single free relaxation time that depends on space and time. A proper kinetic equation is constructed from averaging the Klimontovich-type equation for fluid elements satisfying the Navier-Stokes hydrodynamics exactly. The turbulent kinetic energy plays the role of temperature in standard molecular thermodynamics. We show that the dynamics of turbulent fluctuations resembles a collision process that asymptotically drives the mean distribution towards a Gaussian (Maxwell-Boltzmann) equilibrium form. Non-Gaussianity arises directly from non-equilibrium shear effects. The present framework overcomes the bane of most conventional turbulence models and theoretical frameworks arising from the lack of scale separation between the mean and fluctuating scales of the Navier-Stokes equation with an eddy viscous term. An averaged turbulent flow in the present framework behaves more like a flow of finite Knudsen number with finite relaxation time, and is thus more suitably described in a kinetic theory representation.

Kinetic equations for systems with long-range interactions: a unified description

Abstract:We complete the existing literature on the kinetic theory of systems with long-range interactions. Starting from the BBGKY hierarchy, or using projection operator technics or a quasilinear theory, a general kinetic equation can be derived when collective effects are neglected. This equation (which is not well-known) applies to possibly spatially inhomogeneous systems, which is specific to systems with long-range interactions. Interestingly, the structure of this kinetic equation bears a clear physical meaning in terms of generalized Kubo relations. Furthermore, this equation takes a very similar form for stellar systems and two-dimensional point vortices providing therefore a unified description of the kinetic theory of these systems. If we assume that the system is spatially homogeneous (or axisymmetric for point vortices), this equation can be simplified and reduces to the Landau equation (or its counterpart for point vortices). Our formalism thus offers a simple derivation of Landau-type equations. We also use this general formalism to derive a kinetic equation, written in angle-action variables, describing spatially inhomogeneous systems with long-range interactions. This new derivation solves the shortcomings of our previous derivation [P.H. Chavanis, Physica A 377, 469 (2007)]. Finally, we consider a test particle approach and derive general expressions for the diffusion and friction (or drift) coefficients of a test particle evolving in a bath of field particles. We make contact with the expressions previously obtained in the literature. As an application of the kinetic theory, we argue that the relaxation time is shorter for inhomogeneous (or high-dimensional) systems than for homogeneous (or low-dimensional) systems because there are potentially more resonances.

Our scope is to efficiently solve fluid dynamic problems which present non equilibrium localized regions that can move, merge, appear or disappear in time. The main ingredients of the present work are the followings ones: a fluid model is solved in the whole domain together with a localized kinetic upscaling term that corrects the fluid model wherever it is necessary; this multiscale description of the flow is obtained by using a micro-macro decomposition of the distribution function [P. Degond, J.G. Liu, L. Mieussens, Macroscopic Fluid Model with Localized Kinetic Upscaling Effects, SIAM Multi. Model. Sim. 5(3), 940--979 (2006)]; the dynamic transition between fluid and kinetic descriptions is obtained by using a time and space dependent transition function; to efficiently define the breakdown conditions of fluid models we propose a new criterion based on the distribution function itself. Several numerical examples are presented to validate the method and measure its computational efficiency.

Statistical Equilibrium Principles in 2D Fluid Flow: From Geophysical Fluids to the Solar Tachocline

Abstract:An overview is presented of several diverse branches of work in the area of effectively 2D fluid equilibria which have in common that they are constrained by an infinite number of conservation laws. Broad concepts, and the enormous variety of physical phenomena that can be explored, are highlighted. These span, roughly in order of increasing complexity, Euler flow, nonlinear Rossby waves, 3D axisymmetric flow, shallow water dynamics, and 2D magnetohydrodynamics. The classical field theories describing these systems bear some resemblance to perhaps more familiar fluctuating membrane and continuous spin models, but the fluid physics drives these models into unconventional regimes exhibiting large scale jet and eddy structures. From a dynamical point of view these structures are the end result of various conserved variable forward and inverse cascades. The resulting balance between large scale structure and small scale fluctuations is controlled by the competition between energy and entropy in the system free energy, in turn highly tunable through setting the values of the conserved integrals. Although the statistical mechanical description of such systems is fully self-consistent, with remarkable mathematical structure and diversity of solutions, great care must be taken because the underlying assumptions, especially ergodicity, can be violated or at minimum lead to exceedingly long equilibration times. Generalization of the theory to include weak driving and dissipation (e.g., non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and associated linear response formalism) could provide additional insights, but has yet to be properly explored.

Abstract:One key issue in the probability density function (PDF) approach for disperse two-phase turbulent flows is to close the diffusion term in the phase space. This study aimed to derive a kinetic equation for particle dispersion in turbulent flows by ensemble averaging over all possible realisations of state transition paths in the phase space. The probability density function is expanded as a series in terms of the cumulants of particle paths in the phase space, by introducing a local path density operator to identify the distribution of particle paths. The expansion enables us to directly obtain a kinetic equation with the diffusion term in closed form. The kinetic equation derived in this study has following features that: (1) it has its coefficients expressed as functions of the cumulants of particle paths in the phase space; (2) it applies to particle dispersion by non-Gaussian random forcing with long correlation time scales; (3) it presents new mechanisms responsible for particle diffusion. An application of the kinetic equation is also presented in this paper.

Abstract:In order to address the difficulties of classical fluid kinematics in describing vorticity and the paradox of linear correlation between viscous force and vorticity in the Navier-Stokes equations, the study examines the inherent relationship between momentum conservation and energy conservation and rederives the fundamental equations of fluid flow from new dynamic hypothesis. The study reveals that momentum conservation and mechanical energy conservation are the same concept termed in different descriptions. The material derivative of velocity is to depict the acceleration of fluid particles in Eulerian perspective. In the study, it is assumed that fluids only obey the theorem of momentum, which describes the translational motion of fluids. The centroid of fluid elements can undergo translational motion under a curl force field. In the hypothesis, the symmetry of stress tensor is determined by the properties of stress field rather than the conservation of moment of momentum for fluid elements. The stress tensor is symmetric when stress field is a curl free field, and the stress tensor is asymmetric when stress field is a curl field. New dynamic equilibrium equations for fluids and the constitutive relationship for Newtonian fluid are proposed under the hypothesis. The Navier-Stokes equations are obtained. The new model of fluid dynamics does not require Stokes hypothesis. It is obtained that vorticity reflects the magnitude distribution of shear flow in flow field.

A Moving Mesh Method for Kinetic/Hydrodynamic Coupling

Abstract:This paper deals with the application of a moving mesh method for kinetic/hydrodynamic coupling model in two dimensions. With some criteria, the domain is dynamically decomposed into three parts: kinetic regions where fluids are far from equilibrium, hydrodynamic regions where fluids are near thermodynamical equilibrium and buffer regions which are used as a smooth transition. The Boltzmann-BGK equation is solved in kinetic regions, while Euler equations in hydrodynamic regions and both equations in buffer regions. By a well defined monitor function, our moving mesh method smoothly concentrate the mesh grids to the regions containing rapid variation of the solutions. In each moving mesh step, the solutions are conservatively updated to the new mesh and the cut-off function is rebuilt first to consist with the region decomposition after the mesh motion. In such a framework, the evolution of the hybrid model and the moving mesh procedure can be implemented independently, therefore keep the advantages of both approaches. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the method.
Uniformly Accurate Machine Learning Based Hydrodynamic Models for Kinetic Equations

Abstract:A framework is introduced for constructing interpretable and truly reliable reduced models for multiscale problems in situations without scale separation. Hydrodynamic approximation to the kinetic equation is used as an example to illustrate the main steps and issues involved. To this end, a set of generalized moments are constructed first to optimally represent the underlying velocity distribution. The well-known closure problem is then solved with the aim of best capturing the associated dynamics of the kinetic equation. The issue of physical constraints such as Galilean invariance is addressed and an active-learning procedure is introduced to help ensure that the dataset used is representative enough. The reduced system takes the form of a conventional moment system and works regardless of the numerical discretization used. Numerical results are presented for the BGK (Bhatnagar-GrossKrook) model and binary collision of Maxwell molecules. We demonstrate that the reduced model achieves a uniform accuracy in a wide range of Knudsen numbers spanning from the hydrodynamic limit to free molecular flow.
