Abstract:Research on language in mathematics education is largely dominated by a 'normalcy' of spoken languages. This modal hegemony does not only affect a whole group of learners in failing to provide access that is epistemologically equitable—those using sign language as their preferred mode for mathematical discourse—it also obscures our view on the roles language can play in mathematical thinking and learning. As a field, we can only win from seeking to understand Deaf learners of mathematics beyond a disability, as learners of mathematics with a specific linguistic background that influences mathematical thinking and learning in peculiar ways. In this contribution, I suggest a shift in mindset towards a more inclusive view on language in mathematics education research and practice. I propose basic principles to inform a perspective for reconsidering the role of language in mathematics thinking and learning, inspired by work of philosopher Francois Jullien. This perspective counters a perspective that merely integrates sign language into existing research and instead searches for dialogue between linguistic modalities in learning mathematics, looking beyond language as spoken or written. This approach will be illustrated by the case of the modal affordance of iconicity foregrounded in signed mathematical discourse, its role in Deaf students' mathematics thinking and learning, and how this can inform existing research and practice dealing with language in mathematics education.

Abstract:Our task in preparing this article on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Journal for Research in Marhematics Education (JRME) was to look ahead to the future of research in the field and to identify and discuss issues that might be important for the next decade or two in the life of the journal. Rather than merely offering our own opinions and speculations. we decided to interview a number of other researchers, some from the United States and some from other countries, to sample their views regarding the current state of research in mathematics education, the issues that may affect the future of the field, and the role of the JRME in the current and future scene. In particular, we asked these researchers to identify examples of work they considered significant and to comment on its imponant characteristics. We probed their definitions of the field by asking them to identify the types of work (e.g., empirical studies, historical or theoretical analyses) they judged could legitimately be called research in mathematics education. We explored their visions of the future of research over the next few decades. And we questioned them about the role and place of the JRME in the research community and about its impact on the field. In addition, we participated in a conference on Research in Mathematics Education and Its Results in May 1994 that was part of a study conducted by the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI). The discussion document framing the study (Sierpinska et al., 1993) and many of the presentations and conversations at the ICMI Research Conference should be acknowledged as sources of ideas for the article. Naturally, we have included our own opinions, analyses, and perspectives.

Abstract:Abstract This paper reports an overview of contemporary research on early childhood mathematics teaching and learning presented at recent mathematics education research conferences and papers included in the special issue (2020–4) of ZDM Mathematics Education . The research covers the broad spectrum of educational research focusing on different content and methods in teaching and learning mathematics among the youngest children in the educational systems. Particular focus in this paper is directed to what lessons can be drawn from teaching interventions in early childhood, what facilitates children’s mathematical learning and development, and what mathematical key concepts can be observed in children. Together, these themes offer a coherent view of the complexity of researching mathematical teaching and learning in early childhood, but the research also brings this field forward by adding new knowledge that extends our understanding of aspects of mathematics education and research in this area, in the dynamic context of early childhood. This knowledge is important for future research and for the development of educational practices.
Emerging Trends in Mathematics Education for People with Down Syndrome: Current Research and Future Directions

Abstract:In September 2017, a group of researchers met for the first conference devoted to the singular purpose of exploring a neglected field – the learning of mathematics by individuals with Down syndrome. This special issue is a result of that first meeting and identifies three emerging trends in the mathematics education of learners with Down syndrome: the goals, content, and pedagogy. Education is central to the goal of improving an individual’s quality of life and only recently has the impact of mathematics been fully comprehended. Many researchers continue to explore the development of the concept of number and there is still much to learn. As a new development, we see that interest is now expanding to explore other areas of mathematics. We still have a long way to go to understand how best to open the doors of mathematics to all learners with Down syndrome. We conclude by offering six areas requiring immediate future research in the field of mathematics and Down syndrome.

Abstract:In interdisciplinary Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, empirical evidence is required that points to the educational contribution of mathematics. Specifically, researchers are not clear how mathematics weaves itself through the STEM education meta-discourse. This article contributes to pedagogical practices in educational institutions where STEM has been newly introduced - What are the perceptions and experiences of South African teachers on interdisciplinary STEM education, and how do mathematics and interdisciplinary STEM discourses leverage each other at schools of specialisation (SoS) in South Africa? Participant teachers were drawn from ten SoS in South Africa. SoS are STEM-dense schools in South Africa's Gauteng Province, the country's industrial and commercial hub. Interview data was collected on teachers' experiences and practices to explore the affordances of Mathematics and other STEM disciplines to influencing curriculum advancement. Situated cognition, mathematics as explorations and flow theory informed this qualitative study. In the findings, technology was regarded as raising learner motivation and mathematical achievement. Important to the study is that participants have a high regard for mathematics' role in interdisciplinary STEM education. In the study, teachers had no autonomy to pursue the STEM agenda, as they were bound to adhere to a prescribed curriculum, which hardly refers to implementation of interdisciplinary STEM education. Various recommendations are proffered, such as maintaining the positive perceptions participants have on the role of mathematics in STEM curricula. The research calls for equality and equity of all the STEM disciplines, as one STEM curricula cannot succeed without the other.

History and Overview

Abstract:This chapter takes a historical view of the development of mathematics education, from its initial status as a business mostly managed by mathematicians to the birth of mathematics education as a scientific field of research. Starting from the acknowledgement that research in mathematics education demands more than the traditional focus on discussing curricular options at distinct grade levels, we identified several specialized clusters, debating specific issues related to mathematics education at an international level. We grouped the clusters into three main areas: relationships with psychology, the study of social, cultural and political dimensions, and the relevance of a theory for mathematics education.

Abstract:Several lines of research on reaching that have not been conducted with a specific interest in mathematics instruction have relevance to mathematics education. Topics discussed include process-outcome research linking teacher behavior ro student achievement, structuring the content for clarity and ease of comprehension, teaching cognitive skills and problem-solving strategies, recitation and board work activities, seatwork and homework assignments, conceptual change teaching, classroom organization and grouping, cooperative learning methods, sex equity issues, and motivating students to learn mathematics. Each topic is reviewed with an emphasis on its relevance to mathematics educators and on methodological refinements or extensions inro new topic areas that are needed ro move these lines of research forward.

Abstract:This special issue introduces recent research on mathematics in interdisciplinary STEM education. STEM education is widely promoted by governments around the world as a way of boosting students' interest and achievement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and preparing STEM-qualified workers for twenty-first century careers. However, the role of mathematics in STEM education often appears to be marginal, and we do not understand well enough how mathematics contributes to STEM-based problem-solving or how STEM education experiences enhance students' learning of mathematics. In this survey paper, we present a narrative review of empirical and conceptual research literature, published between 2017 and 2022. These literature sources are organised by a framework comprising five thematic clusters: (1) interdisciplinary curriculum models and approaches; (2) student outcomes and experiences; (3) teacher preparation and professional development; (4) classroom implementation and task design; and (5) policy, structures, and leadership. We use the framework to provide an overview of the papers in this issue and to propose directions for future research. These include: investigating methods and rationales for connecting the constituent STEM disciplines so as to preserve the disciplinary integrity of mathematics; clarifying what is meant by student "success" in interdisciplinary STEM programs, projects, and other educational approaches; moving beyond classroom practices that position mathematics as just a tool for solving problems in other disciplines; understanding what makes a STEM task mathematically rich; and asking how STEM education research can productively shape STEM education policy.

Abstract:Research on mathematical cognition, learning, and instruction (MCLI) often takes cognition as its point of departure and considers instruction at a later point in the research cycle. In this article, we call for psychologists who study MCLI to reflect on the "status quo" of their research practices and to consider making instruction an earlier and more central aspect of their work. We encourage scholars of MCLI (a) to consider the needs of educators and schools when selecting research questions and developing interventions; (b) to compose research teams that are diverse in the personal, disciplinary, and occupational backgrounds of team members; (c) to make efforts to broaden participation in research and to conduct research in authentic settings; and (d) to communicate research in ways that are accessible to practitioners and to the general public. We argue that a more central consideration of instruction will lead to shifts that make research on MCLI more theoretically valuable, more actionable for educators, and more relevant to pressing societal challenges.

Abstract:Emotions and motivation are important for learning and achievement in mathematics. In this paper, we present an overview of research on students' emotions and motivation in mathematics. First, we briefly review how early research has developed into the current state-of-the-art and outline the following key characteristics of emotions and motivation: objects, valence, temporal stability (vs. variability), and situational specificity (vs. generality). Second, we summarize major theories in the field (the control-value theory of achievement emotions, expectancy-value theory of achievement-related motivation, self-determination theory of human motivation, and social-cognitive theory of self-efficacy). Third, we present an overview of instructional characteristics that have been shown to foster emotions and motivation. Fourth, we provide an overview of the contributions to the special issue on "Emotions and Motivation in Mathematics Education and Educational Psychology." Finally, we suggest directions for future research in the field with respect to advancing theory, improving measurement, and considering diversity and inclusion.

Abstract:This survey paper is an expanded version of an invited keynote at the ThEdu'22 workshop, August 2022, in Haifa (Israel). After a short introduction on the developments of CAS, DGS and other useful technologies, we show implications in Mathematics Education, and in the broader frame of STEAM Education. In particular, we discuss the transformation of Mathematics Education into exploration-discovery-conjecture-proof scheme, avoiding usage as a black box . This scheme fits well into the so-called 4 C's of 21st Century Education. Communication and Collaboration are emphasized not only between humans, but also between machines, and between man and machine. Specific characteristics of the outputs enhance the need of Critical Thinking. The usage of automated commands for exploration and discovery is discussed, with mention of limitations where they exist. We illustrate the topic with examples from parametric integrals (describing a "cognitive neighborhood" of a mathematical notion), plane geometry, and the study of plane curves (envelopes, isoptic curves). Some of the examples are fully worked out, others are explained and references are given.

Abstract:Drawing on current research the author explicates twelve assertions relating to curricula, teaching, learners and learning environments in lower primary school mathematics. Topics discussed include: unchanging and under-challenging curricula; the need for greater emphasis on developing children’s verbal number strategies and number sense, and on activities specifically suited to prenumerical children; curriculum constraints on teachers; the role of problem solving and differing interpretations of problem solving; the need for a better understanding of how children learn mathematics; differences in children’s knowledge; “anti-interventionism,” discovery learning, constructivism, children’s autonomy and developmental learning; the need for compensatory programs; and learning in collaborative settings. The author concludes that learning and teaching lower primary mathematics continues to be an important area of focus and challenge for teachers and researchers.

Abstract:This book highlights the contribution of artificial intelligence for mathematics education. It provides concrete ideas supported by mathematical work obtained through dynamic international collaboration, and discusses the flourishing of new mathematics in the contemporary world from a sustainable development perspective. Over the past thirty years, artificial intelligence has gradually infiltrated all facets of society. When it is deployed in interaction with the human designer or user, AI certainly raises new ethical questions. But as soon as it aims to augment intelligence in a kind of human-machine partnership, it goes to the heart of knowledge development and the very performance of work. The proposed themes and the sections of the book address original issues relating to the creation of AI milieus to work on mathematics, to the AI-supported learning of mathematics and to the coordination of « usual » paper/pencil techniques and « new » AI-aided educational working spaces. The authors of the book and the coordinators of each section are all established specialists in mathematics didactics, mathematics and computer science. In summary, this book is a must-read for everyone interested in the teaching and learning of mathematics, and it concerns the interaction between the human and the machine in both directions. It contains ideas, questions and inspiration that invite to take up the challenge of Artificial Intelligence contributing to Mathematical Human Learning.
Problem‐solving or knowledge‐centred: the influence of philosophy on mathematics teaching

Abstract:In this article, which is in criticism of a previous paper by Eric Blaire in this journal, I suggest that one's perspective of mathematics teaching is a logical consequence of one's epistemological commitment in relation to mathematical knowledge, and not merely one of expediency in response to societal pressures, or of pedagogical convenience. I suggest that from a consideration of the schools of thought in philosophy of mathematics, two distinct movements emerge. These are the Euclidean programme, an attempt to base mathematics on firm foundations, and the quasi‐empirical programme, the recognition that mathematics progresses heuristically, and through the re‐transmission of falsity. As a consequence, two teaching perspectives can be identified, knowledge‐centred and problem‐solving respectively. In describing these styles, I criticize the former and propose that the latter can initiate substantial changes and advances for school mathematics programmes.

Abstract:Abstract When analyzing the relationships between knowledge and the teacher, some relationships related to the planning of teaching practices during professional practice are identified. One of the known reasons for these knowledge needs in planning is the lack of recognition of other elements in school mathematics. Under the theoretical perspective of the model of the specialized knowledge of the teacher who teaches mathematics, this qualitative research aims to characterize the elements of specialized knowledge in a geometry class and the subsequent reflection of the tasks of planning teaching. Among the main results of this research show the need to deepen the knowledge of the “basic” concepts of geometry, such as the cube, its characteristics and its representation from different perspectives. Therefore, it is necessary to motivate in teachers the need to develop their own spatial visualization skills, so that they apply them to the school mathematics they teach in their daily lives.

Abstract:Drawing on a 3-year interpretive study that followed a cohort of children from prekindergarten to Grade 1, this article presents results of a multiple case study, which demonstrated that although two children had the same teachers, classmates, and curricula over 3 years, their experiences in the three successive mathematics classrooms were quite different from each other (although consistent for each child). The two focal children did not have equitable access to their teachers’ pedagogical moves, and this lack of access was easy to overlook in transcripts of whole-class discussions. The study suggests that more research needs to represent mathematics lessons from the perspectives of children and youth, particularly those students who engage with teachers infrequently or in atypical ways.

Abstract:In this paper, we offer a comparative review of research on understanding and promoting students' mathematical thinking. The sources for the review are papers that were published in Educational Studies in Mathematics (ESM) during two windows of time: 1994–1998 and 2014–2018. Selection of these two time periods enables us to comment on the "state of the art" in research as well as identify changes over the past 25 years. The review is guided by an analysis of conceptualizations of "mathematical thinking" proposed in the research literature, selected curriculum documents, and international assessment programs such as the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). The review not only documents salient features of research studies, such as the country of origin of the authors, educational level of the participants, research aims, theoretical perspectives, and methodological approaches, but also identifies the contribution to knowledge made by this body of work as well as future research directions and opportunities.

Abstract:Dewey (1938) suggested curriculum development should consider both the relationship between students' life experiences and interests and the material to be learned, and the relationship among educative experiences as unfolding in meaningful and useful ways. This study explored the influence of a mathematics education curriculum incorporating historical topics on students' meaning-making efforts as they developed both as students of mathematics and as preservice elementary mathematics teachers. The underlying question of this study was: How may a mathematics education curriculum, infused with evolving historical explorations over several semesters, help students make sense of their own mathematics and their future roles as mathematics teachers in elementary schools? The curriculum provided experiences with historical topics in mathematics, organized over three different semesters, in order to explore Dewey's notion that the unfolding of mathematical ideas may occur as historical origins and contexts offer meaningful mathematical connections. Results suggest that, despite the multiple opportunities throughout their teacher preparation program to expand their ideas about mathematical origins and connections, students maintained a predominantly technical interest in and perspective of mathematics learning. The resiliency of their beliefs was considered from the perspective of context of choice (Kymlicka, 1991, 1995), suggesting real-life experiences and historical connections with mathematical origins throughout a teacher preparation program may not sufficiently equip preservice teachers with necessary tools to overcome traditional perspectives of and past experiences with the mathematics curriculum.
