Abstract:In the present work, a novel porous, and chemically stable amine-based covalent organic polymer (POP-1) was designed and synthesized under solvothermal conditions. The porosity, crystallinity, chemical stability, electrochemical properties, and diffuse reflectance of POP-1 were investigated via N2 sorption experiment, power X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, cyclic voltammetry, and ultraviolet visible near infrared spectrometry, respectively. POP-1 exhibits good chemical stability in both acidic and alkaline aqueous solutions, as well as in organic solvents. Undoped POP-1 can be directly used as a photocatalyst for rhodamine B irradiation degradation under light-emitting diode and natural light. The Ea of POP-1 for RhB degradation is 82.37kJ/mol. Furthermore, POP-1 can be reused as a catalyst in RhB degradation without degraded catalytic activity.

Abstract:Phenols are versatile synthetic intermediates and key structural motifs in many natural products and biologically active compounds. We herein report a visible-light-induced aerobic oxidative hydroxylation of arylboronic acids/pinacol esters using air as oxidant and without using any catalysts and base, etc., additives, providing a green entry to a variety of phenols in a highly efficient and concise fashion. This novel reaction is enabled by photoactivation of an electron donor-acceptor complex, in which THF serves as both the solvent and electron donor. DFT studies indicated that the oxidation process involves a concerted hydrogen abstraction transfer from THF and dehydroxylation of boronic acid undergoing spin crossover from triplet to singlet to produce an active peroxoboronic acid intermidiate. Salient merits of this chemistry include broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance, gram-scale synthesis, and versatile late-stage functionalizations as well as the use of air, visible light, and catalyst- and additive-free conditions. This strategy introduces a novel photoreaction mode with the aid of a solvent, offering a succinct and environmentally sustainable route for synthesizing phenols. The strong practicability and highly efficient access to modifying complex biorelevant molecules bode well for the potential applications of this chemistry in pharmaceutical chemistry.
Metal-Free Organic Optoelectronic Molecule as a Highly Efficient Photocatalyst for the Degradation of Organic Pollutants

Abstract:With the increasing consumption of natural resources, photocatalysis converting solar energy to chemical energy has attracted extensive attention of researchers owing to the advantages of developing energy-saving and environmentally benign processes. In this work, a facile and simple method was developed to synthesize a metal-free organic optoelectronic molecule (denoted as DPPRD), which is composed of a central diketopyrrolopyrrole moiety and two terminal units of a rhodanine (RD) moiety. This is a first green strategy toward the synthesis of DPPRD. Because of good thermal stability, narrow band gap, and excellent visible light absorption of solar spectrum, DPPRD exhibited to be an efficient and chemically stable photocatalyst for visible light degradation of organic pollutants such as bisphenol A (BPA) and methyl orange (MO) in aqueous solution. The control experiments with different types of radical scavengers implied that the hole (h+) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were the key reactive species during the photodegradation processes. The photodegradation pathways of BPA and MO were thus proposed based on the identified intermediates. This improved method for DPPRD synthesis is expected to widen its applications to industrial production, whereas its excellent visible light photocatalytic activity would be utilized potentially in the field of environmental and industrial applications.

Abstract:Quinolones and isoquinolones exhibit diverse biological and pharmaceutical activities, and their synthesis is highly desirable under mild conditions. Here, a highly efficient and environmentally friendly visible light-mediated aerobic oxidation of readily available N-alkylpyridinium salts has been developed with Eosin Y as the organic photocatalyst and air as the terminal oxidant, and the reaction provided quinolones and isoquinolones in good yields. The method shows numerous advantages including mild and environmentally friendly conditions, high efficiency, tolerance of wide functional groups and low cost. Furthermore, 4-desoxylonimide with important pharmaceutical activities was effectively prepared by using our method. Therefore, the present method should provide a novel and useful strategy for synthesis and modification of N-heterocycles.
Ultra-fast photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B exploiting oleate-stabilized zinc oxide nanoparticles

Abstract:Rhodamine B (RhB) is a harmful dye released by industrial wastewaters, thus necessitating its urgent removal. Advanced oxidation processes constitute promising strategies to purify polluted water. Among others, photocatalysis relies on reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by photocatalytic particles, typically semiconductors like titania or zinc oxide (ZnO), excited by solar or UV-Vis light. However, their wide band gap limits their catalytic capabilities within the absorption of the UV spectrum and causes fast electron-hole recombination. This study presents novel strategies to overcome these limitations: (i) doping semiconductors to increase photocatalytic efficiency; (ii) sensitization-mediated photocatalysis for visible light activation using chemical moieties to trap dye molecules; (iii) nanosizing the photocatalysts to enhance the surface area. ZnO nanoparticles, doped with iron or gadolinium and capped with oleic acid are here synthesized and tested in RhB dye solutions. Remarkably, the results demonstrate an ultra-fast RhB degradation, driven by oleic acid having crucial role in dye adsorption. The degradation mechanisms, including ROS-induced N-deethylation and xanthene group cleavage, are also unraveled. These findings underscore the efficacy of the proposed semiconductor photocatalyst design, highlighting a significant advancement with extensive potential applications in wastewater remediation. This innovative approach paves the way for more efficient and practical solutions to combat industrial dye pollution.

Abstract:The organic pollutants in industrial wastewater continuously endanger human health. Therefore, effective treatment of organic pollutants is very urgent. Photocatalytic degradation technology is an excellent solution to remove it. TiO2 photocatalysts are easy to prepare and have high catalytic activity, unfortunately, TiO2 only absorbs ultraviolet light limiting its utilization of visible light. In this study, a facile environmentally friendly synthesis of Ag-coated on micro-wrinkled TiO2-based catalysts in order to extend the absorption of Visible light. Firstly, a fluorinated titanium dioxide precursor was prepared by a one-step solvothermal method, and the precursor was calcined at high temperature in a nitrogen atmosphere to form a carbon dopant, and then a surface silver-deposited carbon/fluorine co-doped TiO2 photocatalyst C/F-Ag-TiO2 was prepared by a hydrothermal method The results showed that the Ag was coated on the wrinkled TiO2 layer and C/F-Ag-TiO2 photocatalyst was synthetized successfully. Benefit from the synergistic effect of doped carbon and fluorine atoms in combination with the quantum size effect of the surface silver nanoparticles, the band gap energy of C/F-Ag-TiO2 (2.56 eV) is obviously lower than anatase (3.2eV). The photocatalyst achieved an impressive degradation rate of 84.2% for Rhodamine B in 4 h, with a degradation rate constant of 0.367 h-1, which was 17 times higher than that of P25 under visible light. Therefore, the C/F-Ag-TiO2 composite is a promising candidate as a highly efficient photocatalyst for environmental remediation.

Abstract:The oxidation of N-heterocycles is key to their functionalization since it enhances their reactivity in the ortho position. How-ever, an efficient post-reduction is often required to access the targeted compound. Here, a rhenium-based photocatalyst enables the versatile and fast deoxygenation of N-heterocyclic and alkyl N-oxides, avoiding sacrificial oxophilic reagents. The strong influence of the reaction conditions (solvent, H2O as additive, irradiation set-up) is demonstrated. The system shows a high functional group tolerance towards other reducible functions (free alcohol, carboxylic acid, ester, nitrile, halo-gen,…) and light-sensitive N-heterocycles.

Abstract:An integral electro-catazone and electro-peroxone (E-cataperoxone) process was developed for quick and effective oxidation of Rhodamine B (RhB) as the model refractory organic pollutant in this study. A mesoflower-structured TiO2-coated porous Titanium gas diffuser (MFT-PTGD) acted as both the anode and the O-3 gas diffuser, while carbon polytetrafluoroethylene was used as the cathode. During O-3/O-2 mixture flowing through the MFT-PTGD, O-3 was electrochemically catalyzed simultaneously by the TiO2 mesoflower at the anode (via an electro-catazone reaction) and the in situ generated H2O2 at the cathode (via an electro-peroxone reaction) to achieve a high yield of (OH)-O-center dot. The E-cataperoxone process shows an integral effect and significantly enhances the RhB degradation rate and efficacy. Additionally, owing to the unique three-dimensional porous structure and flow-through configuration of the MFT-PTGD anode, the O-3 flow-through mode is superior to O-3 flow-by mode for the E-cataperoxone oxidation of RhB. These results suggest that the E-cataperoxone process is an effective and promising means of degrading refractory organic pollutants in wastewater. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Developing highly active photocatalyst to degrade organic pollutants is a green strategy to deal with the environmental crisis. Herein, the novel BiOBr/(001)-TiO2 (TB-x) composites were synthesized via the in-situ construction method. The crystal structure, morphological structure, energy band structure and photoelectrochemical properties of TB-x were characterized, and the results show that the 2D/2D structure has a significant improvement in photo-generated carrier separation and visible light utilization. The optimal Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation reaction rate of TB-10 is 3.4 times and 2.1 times higher than pure (001)-TiO2 under Xenon lamp and Mercury lamp (500 W), respectively. Meanwhile, the TB-10 displays an excellent cycling performance during photocatalytic reaction. Based on free radical trapping and the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments, the pivotal active group is the superoxide radicals anions (·O2 -) to degrade RhB. This study offers a conception for advancing the application of TB-x photocatalyst in environmental protection.

Oxidative Degradation of Organic Pollutants Utilizing Molecular Oxygen and Visible Light over a Supported Catalyst of Fe(bpy)32+ in Water

Abstract:This article explores a supported catalyst of Fe(bpy)32+ on a cationic exchange resin (Amberlite IRA 200) as a photocatalyst for the degradation of organic pollutants by activating molecular oxygen under visible irradiation (λ>420nm) in water. Different from Fe(bpy)32+ which is not photoactive in solution, the supported catalyst exhibits a very efficient photoactivity for the degradation of N,N-dimethylaniline and the cationic dyes of Rhodamine B (RhB) and Malachite Green (MG) in an aerated aqueous medium. TOC removal yield was 75, 60 and 58%, respectively, after 700min of visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic activity of the supported Fe(bpy)32+ remained unchanged after 22 cycles of over 100h. The photocatalyst was characterized by UV-Vis diffuse reflectance, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS). EPR studies suggest that the active superoxide species {Fe(bpy)33+O2−} are involved in the light-activated reaction. A reaction mechanism is proposed in the text.

Abstract:Developing efficient catalysts for visible light reactions is vital in the field of photocatalysis. This study focuses on the synthesis of novel ternary composites (α-DMACoPc/TiO 2 /MIL-101 (Fe)) by leveraging the excellent adsorption properties of MIL-101 (Fe), the photosensitizing capabilities of phthalocyanine, and the photocatalytic potential of TiO 2 . The nanocomposites' structural and optical attributes were thoroughly analyzed. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) was utilized to showcase the crystalline nature of the composites. Furthermore, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) studies confirmed the formation of ternary nanocomposites. Optical absorption investigations demonstrated the tuning of the optical band gap from the UV to the visible range. The results indicated that nearly 94% of the organic material was decomposed after 150 min of exposure to simulated sunlight from a xenon lamp. This high efficiency can be attributed to the synergistic interaction among the composites, enhancing light absorption. The composite's robust stability was evidenced through cyclic tests. Valuable information was provided to advance the design and synthesis of photocatalysts consisting of metal–organic frameworks synergized with semiconductors. Exploring the possibility of mesoporous materials was based on MOFs for photodegradation of organic pollutants. The photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants by MOFs mesoporous materials was also investigated. The potential of composite materials in the field of dye degradation of industrial waste is confirmed. The good recycling photocatalytic reusability indicates the promising application of this photocatalyst.

Abstract:We reported a novel nanocomposite of cuprous oxide nanospheres, three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide, and nano-chitosan (Cu2O@3D-rGO@NCS) with diverse functionalities by a feasible one-step in situ reduction synthesis. The photocatalytic ability of Cu2O@3D-rGO@NCS nanocomposite using the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under simulated sunlight irradiation was accessed. The superior photocatalytic ability of Cu2O@3D-rGO@NCS compared to the pristine Cu2O nanospheres and Cu2O@3D-rGO nanocomposite, was attributed to high porosity from 3D-rGO, an efficient charge transfer from Cu2O to rGO, and high adsorption ability of NCS. The photodegradation efficiency toward rhodamine B (RhB) under simulated sunlight illumination was increased by approximately 68.2% and 46.8% when Cu2O@3D-rGO@NCS nanocomposite was used compared with the pristine Cu2O and Cu2O@3D-rGO nanocomposite, respectively. The recyclability results also demonstrated the excellent stability and reliability of the Cu2O@3D-rGO@NCS nanocomposite. The present work provides new insights into the synthesis and characterization of Cu2O@3D-rGO@NCS nanocomposite and its wide application in the environment protection issues.
Solvent-Induced Two Co-Based 3D Metal–Organic Frameworks as Platforms for the High Degradation of Rhodamine B Under Sunlight

Abstract:Photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) is an extremely difficult but very important issue in the field of environment protection. Two metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) [Co3(L) (NTB)2(DMA)2]·4DMA (1) and [Co3(L) (NTB)2]·2DMA (2) [L = (E)-4,4′-(ethene-1,2-diyl)bis(N-pyridin-3-yl)benzamide, H3NTB = 4,4′,4″-nitrilotribenzoic acid] were successfully synthesized by tuning the acidity of the solvent under the solvothermal conditions. MOFs 1 and 2 exhibited the same composition but different metal coordination modes, which displayed excellent photocatalytic activities toward the degradation of RhB without any additional oxidants or co-catalysts under true sunlight. The degradation ratio of RhB reached over 96% within 30 min, and the selectivity toward RhB of MOFs 1 and 2 was also investigated. The effect of solvents on the photocatalytic degradation of RhB was explored. In addition, the stable cycle-catalytic efficiencies of 1 and 2 indicated that they possessed not only outstanding photocatalytic activities but also good reusability toward the degradation of organic dye RhB, enabling them to become potential candidates for environmental governance.

Abstract:The synergistic combination of biocatalysis and photocatalysis is emerging as powerful tool for the development of sustainable and atom‐efficient synthetic concepts facilitating an enormous portfolio of possible reactions which even goes beyond the capabilities found in nature. Here, a cyclic deracemization process is presented tailored for the synthesis of optically pure sulfoxides which are versatile structural motifs in asymmetric synthesis as well as in bioactive compounds. Enantioselective enzyme‐catalyzed reduction of rac‐sulfoxides was combined with a stereo‐unselective photocatalytic oxidation of the corresponding sulfide intermediate. The utilization of the readily accessible and rather inexpensive photocatalyst Eosin Y increases the usability of this synthetic method. To overcome the incompatibility between the photocatalyst Eosin Y and the biocatalytic step, the cyclic deracemization process was performed in a step‐wise fashion via alternated reduction in the darkness and oxidation under illumination. This modular system allowed precise adjustments of reaction parameters yielding the desired sulfoxide targets with up to >99% ee. Evaluation of the substrate scope including a range of structurally diverse molecules demonstrated its broad applicability.

Abstract:The accumulation of organic dyes in water and their consequent detrimental effect to ecological environment have attracted worldwide extensive attention. It is urgent to develop rapid and efficient method to degrade organic dyes. In this paper, an efficient CdZnS/SnS2/SnO2 heterojunction is successfully prepared by sequential template approach and hydrothermal method. Comparison with CdZnS and SnS2/SnO2, the heterogeneous structure of CdZnS/SnS2/SnO2 greatly enhances the photocatalytic degradation ability of Rhodamine B (RhB). The apparent reaction rate of CdZnS/SnS2/SnO2 heterostructure is around 12.71 and 16.69 times higher than those of SnS2/SnO2 and CdZnS, respectively, reaching 0.0267 min−1. After CdZnS/SnS2/SnO2 photocatalysis of RhB solution, the BOD/COD ratio increases from 0.168 to 0.725, indicating that the biodegradability is greatly improved. It has been proved that •OH, •O2−, h+ and e− are the main active species involved in the degradation process. In addition, the CdZnS/SnS2/SnO2 exhibits good stability and reusability, with little change in the photocatalytic activity after five cycles. Its superior removal activity is mainly due to the formation of heterojunction improved light harvesting and enhanced separation efficiency. This work provides a new insight for photocatalytic degradation of organic dye wastewater by solar light.

The synthetic route led to both cis and trans isomers which were separated by column chromatography or crystallization. The structures of synthesized compounds were confirmed by spectroscopic methods: IR, NMR and HR-MS. For lactones with naphthyl ring (6e and 7e) the crystal structures were also obtained. The lactones were screened for biological evaluation against cancer line HL-60 (human promyelocytic leukemia). The tests showed that the presence of substituent at the benzene ring does not significantly affect the antiproliferative activity of the compound.
Mesoporous CuO Prepared in a Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent Medium for Effective Photodegradation of Rhodamine B

Abstract:Metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely used as catalysts in the chemical industry, but their preparation is usually limited by strict conditions such as high temperature, elevated pressure, and the use of volatile and highly toxic organic solvents. To solve this problem, this work developed an environmentally benign method using green solvents, i.e., natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs), as a reaction medium to prepare copper oxide (CuO) particles. The experimental results suggested that the synthesized CuO particles were sheet-like mesoporous NPs, and they exhibited excellent catalytic performance towards the photodegradation of rhodamine B (RhB) in the presence of potassium monopersulfate (PMS). The catalytic activity of the synthesized CuO NPs was better than that of the reported metal oxide-based catalysts. Reactive species such as photoexcited holes, superoxide radicals, and singlet oxygen were involved in the RhB degradation. These results indicated that NADESs are good media for the preparation of CuO NPs, and exhibit the potential for application to the preparation of other metal oxides.

Abstract:A novel and simple visible-light photoredox intramolecular dearomatization of phenol derivatives containing ketoximes leading to spiropyrrolines has been developed. The protocol uses readily available 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) as the base and electron-donor, visible light as the light source, and the reaction was performed well at room temperature without need of a photocatalyst. Therefore, the present method should provide a useful strategy for synthesis of spiropyrrolines.
