Abstract:As an important kind of emerging heterogeneous catalyst for sustainable chemical processes, supported metal cluster (SMC) catalysts have received great attention for their outstanding activity; however, the easy aggregation of metal clusters due to their migration along the substrate's surface usually deteriorates their activity and even causes catalyst failure during cycling. Herein, stable Pt nanoclusters (NCs, ∼1.06 nm) are homogeneously confined in the uniform spherical mesopores of mesoporous titania (mpTiO2) by the interaction between Pt NCs and metal oxide pore walls made of polycrystalline anatase TiO2. The obtained Pt-mpTiO2 exhibits excellent stability with well-retained CO conversion (∼95.0%) and Pt NCs (∼1.20 nm) in the long term water-gas shift (WGS) reaction. More importantly, the Pt-mpTiO2 displays an unusual increasing activity during the cyclic catalyzing WGS reaction, which was found to stem from the in situ generation of interfacial active sites (Ti3+-Ov-Ptδ+) by the reduction effect of spillover hydrogen generated at the stably supported Pt NCs. The Pt-mpTiO2 catalysts also show superior performance toward the selective hydrogenation of furfural to 2-methylfuran. This work discloses an efficient and robust Pt-mpTiO2 catalyst and systematically elucidates the mechanism underlying its unique catalytic activity, which helps to design stable SMC catalysts with self-enhancing interfacial activity in sustainable heterogeneous catalysis.
Modulating the surface defects of titanium oxides and consequent reactivity of Pt catalysts

Abstract:In heterogeneous catalysis, it is widely believed that the surface states of catalyst supports can strongly influence the catalytic performance, because active components are generally anchored on supports. This paper describes a detailed understanding of the influence of surface defects of TiO2 supports on the catalytic properties of Pt catalysts. Pt was deposited on reduced (r-), hydroxylated (h-), and oxidized (o-) TiO2 surfaces, respectively, and the different surface states of TiO2 not only lead to differences in metal dispersion, but also distinct electronic interactions between the metal and the support. The highest reactivity for catalytic CO oxidation can be achieved over the Pt catalyst supported on reduced TiO2 with surface oxygen vacancies. The turnover frequency (TOF) of this catalyst is determined to be ∼11 times higher than that of Pt supported on oxidized TiO2. More importantly, the reactivity is seen to increase in the sequence of Pt/o-TiO2 < Pt/h-TiO2 < Pt/r-TiO2, which is well consistent with the trend of the calculated Bader charge of Pt.

Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.

Abstract:AbstractStrong metal‐support interactions characteristic of the encapsulation of metal particles by oxide overlayers have been widely observed on large metal nanoparticles, but scarcely occur on small nanoclusters (<2 nm) for which the metal‐support interactions remain elusive. Herein, we study the structural evolution of Pt nanoclusters (1.5 nm) supported on anatase TiO2 upon high‐temperature H2 reduction. The Pt nanoclusters start to partially evolve into a CsCl‐type PtTi intermetallic compound when the reduction temperature reaches 400 °C. Upon 700 °C reduction, the PtTi nanoparticles are exclusively formed and grow epitaxially along the TiO2 (101) crystal faces. The thermodynamics of the formation of PtTi via migration of reduced Ti atoms into Pt cluster is unraveled by theoretical calculations. The thermally stable PtTi intermetallic compound, with single‐atom Pt isolated by Ti, exhibits enhanced catalytic activity and promoted catalytic durability for CO oxidation.

Abstract:Classical strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) has attracted intensive attention in the heterogeneous catalysis field; however, its crystalline TiOx overlayer and reversible feature often curtail the effect of classical SMSI on enhancing the catalytic performance of supported metal catalysts in oxidation reactions, especially at elevated temperatures. Here, we report the evidence that Pt nanoparticles can be encapsulated by an amorphous and permeable TiOx cover layer in Pt/TiO2 catalysts under an oxidative atmosphere, where the keys are the utilization of melamine, followed by annealing in nitrogen flow and further calcination at 800 °C in air. More importantly, the formed overlayer is stabilized against re-oxidation at 400–600 °C in air, in sharp contrast to the retreat of the TiOx overlayer by subsequent oxidation treatment in classical SMSI. Abstract:Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) is crucial to modulating the nature of metal species, yet the SMSI behaviors of sub-nanometer metal clusters remain unknown due to the difficulties in constructing SMSI at cluster scale. Herein, we achieve the successful construction of the SMSI between Pt clusters and amorphous TiO2 nanosheets by vacuum annealing, which required a relatively low temperature that avoids the aggregation of small clusters. In situ scanning transmission electron microscopy observation is employed to explore the SMSI behaviors, and the results reveal the dynamic rearrangement of Pt atoms upon annealing for the first time. The originally disordered Pt atoms become ordered as the crystallizing of the amorphous TiO2 support, forming an epitaxial interface between Pt and TiO2. Such SMSI state can remain stable in oxidation environment even at 400 °C. Further investigations prove that the electron transfer from TiO2 to Pt occupies the Pt 5d orbitals, which is responsible for the disappeared CO adsorption ability of Pt/TiO2 after forming SMSI. This work not only opens a new avenue for constructing SMSI at cluster scale but also provides in-depth understanding on the unique SMSI behavior, which would stimulate the development of supported metal clusters for catalysis applications.

Abstract:Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) has gained great attention in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. However, whether single-atom catalysts can exhibit SMSI remains unknown. Here, we demonstrate that SMSI can occur on TiO2 -supported Pt single atoms but at a much higher reduction temperature than that for Pt nanoparticles (NPs). Pt single atoms involved in SMSI are not covered by the TiO2 support nor do they sink into its subsurface. The suppression of CO adsorption on Pt single atoms stems from coordination saturation (18-electron rule) rather than the physical coverage of Pt atoms by the support. Based on the new finding it is revealed that single atoms are the true active sites in the hydrogenation of 3-nitrostyrene, while Pt NPs barely contribute to the activity since the NP sites are selectively encapsulated. The findings in this work provide a new approach to study the active sites by tuning SMSI.

Abstract:Tailoring strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs) have been verified to become an efficient strategy for developing novel heterogeneous catalysts. Here, both TiO2 supports (anatase (A) and rutile (R)) were employed to prepare the Pd/TiO2 catalysts and strongly titania-crystal-phase-dependent Pd-TiO2 SMSIs and catalysis in CO2 hydrogenation were observed. A-TiO2 is more facile to undergo Pd-TiO2 SMSIs than R-TiO2, which could be relevant to better reducibility over calcined Pd/A-TiO2 C catalyst. Catalytic performance of the Pd/TiO2-R (reduced) catalysts in CO2 hydrogenation are sensitive to the Pd-TiO2 structures, among which the Pd nanoparticles mostly encapsulated by TiO2-x overlayers over Pd/A-TiO2-R catalyst with more prominent SMSIs is more intrinsically active. This could be ascribed to both stronger H-spillover and hydrogenation property and better CO2 activation capacity over Pd/A-TiO2-R catalyst. However, its catalytic activity is seriously restricted by the number of intrinsically active sites due to less exposed Pd atoms to block H2 activation sites. These results clearly demonstrate the crystal-phase engineering as an efficient strategy to tailor the SMSIs for developing improved heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Catalysts containing heterostructures consisting of composite metal/metal oxides have been proven to be very active for many catalytic reactions. In this work, Pt/FeOx heterostructures, including Pt/Fe2O3 and Pt/Fe3O4 nanospheres, were synthesized and used for catalytic oxidation of CO. Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 nanospheres were synthesized by hydrothermal methods, and then platinum precursors were in situ reduced on the prepared FeOx in ethylene glycol solutions. The results of the activity test showed that the Pt/Fe3O4 nanospheres exhibited much higher catalytic activity of CO oxidation than the Pt/Fe2O3 nanospheres over the entire temperature range of 50 degrees C-225 degrees C. Complete CO oxidation could be achieved on the Pt/Fe3O4 catalysts at temperatures above 150 degrees C, while the full CO conversion required a temperature of 225 degrees C on the Pt/Fe2O3 catalysts. Several characterization techniques were used to investigate the physicochemical properties in light of the activity differences of the prepared catalysts. The combined results of TEM and XRD showed that Pt/Fe3O4 and Pt/Fe2O3 were comprised of Pt nanoparticles with an average crystallite size of 3.7 nm and 3.6 nm, respectively. The Pt nanoparticles could uniformly distribute throughout the FeOx nanosphere supports. According to XPS and H-2-TPR characterizations, surface chemisorbed oxygen was readily formed on the Pt/Fe3O4 nanospheres, and a synergistic interaction might exist between Pt and Fe3O4 nanospheres. The presence of Pt nanoparticles facilitated the activation of surface chemisorbed oxygen, thus mainly contributed to the CO oxidation. Abstract:The strong metal-support interaction exerts a significant influence on the catalytic performance of the metal active site. This paper describes the modulation of the coverage of TiO x on the Pt nanoparticles via the pretreatment atmosphere, and its influence of the catalytic performance for propane dehydrogenation. The direct reduction in H 2 at 600 °C of the Pt/TiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 catalyst induces partial coverage of the Pt nanoparticles by TiO x . This partial coverage with TiO x leads to higher electron density over platinum than catalysts through air calcination followed by reduction, which can enhance the selectivity of propylene. Furthermore, the presence of TiO x in the catalysts can promote C–H activation during propane dehydrogenation. Eventually, this synergistic catalyst presents a high formation rate of propylene (141.1 mmol·g cat -1 ·h −1 ) and propylene selectivity of ∼ 91 % with a low deactivation rate of 0.09 h −1 . This study unveils an effective approach to modulate the catalytic performance of metals supported on oxides based on metal-support interaction.

Abstract:The electronic metal–support interaction (EMSI) plays a crucial role in catalysis as it can induce electron transfer between metal and support, modulate the electronic state of the supported metal, and optimize the reduction of intermediate species. In this work, the tailoring of electronic structure of Pt single atoms supported on N‐doped mesoporous hollow carbon spheres (Pt1/NMHCS) via strong EMSI engineering is reported. The Pt1/NMHCS composite is much more active and stable than the nanoparticle (PtNP) counterpart and commercial 20 wt% Pt/C for catalyzing the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), exhibiting a low overpotential of 40 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, a high mass activity of 2.07 A mg−1Pt at 50 mV overpotential, a large turnover frequency of 20.18 s−1 at 300 mV overpotential, and outstanding durability in acidic electrolyte. Detailed spectroscopic characterizations and theoretical simulations reveal that the strong EMSI effect in a unique N1−Pt1−C2 coordination structure significantly tailors the electronic structure of Pt 5d states, resulting in promoted reduction of adsorbed proton, facilitated H−H coupling, and thus Pt‐like HER activity. This work provides a constructive route for precisely designing single‐Pt‐atom‐based robust electrocatalysts with high HER activity and durability.

New Atomic-Scale Insight Into Self-Regeneration Of Pt-Catio3 Catalysts: Incipient Redox-Induced Structures Revealed By A Small-Angle Tilting Stem Technique

Abstract:A small-angle tilting technique, applied to scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), was used together with multislice image simulation to reveal new atomic-scale information about the structural evolution of single-crystalline Pt-doped CaTiO3 thin films, grown by pulsed laser deposition, that occurs in response to reduction and reoxidation treatments. Specifically, we were able to confirm that Pt atoms are randomly dispersed throughout the as-grown film, most often occupying Ti sites, show that the smallest (similar to 1 nm) Pt-rich clusters embedded within CaTiO3 after reduction have a structure consistent with metallic Pt, and demonstrate that the Pt atoms from these clusters occupy mainly Ca sites, in the form of ordered Pt-atom arrays, after reoxidation.

Abstract:Oxide-supported precious metal nanoparticles are widely used industrial catalysts. Due to expense and rarity, developing synthetic protocols that reduce precious metal nanoparticle size and stabilize dispersed species is essential. Supported atomically dispersed, single precious metal atoms represent the most efficient metal utilization geometry, although debate regarding the catalytic activity of supported single precious atom species has arisen from difficulty in synthesizing homogeneous and stable single atom dispersions, and a lack of site-specific characterization approaches. We propose a catalyst architecture and characterization approach to overcome these limitations, by depositing ∼1 precious metal atom per support particle and characterizing structures by correlating scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging and CO probe molecule infrared spectroscopy. This is demonstrated for Pt supported on anatase TiO2. In these structures, isolated Pt atoms, Ptiso, remain stable through various conditions, and spectroscopic evidence suggests Ptiso species exist in homogeneous local environments. Comparing Ptiso to ∼1 nm preoxidized (Ptox) and prereduced (Ptmetal) Pt clusters on TiO2, we identify unique spectroscopic signatures of CO bound to each site and find CO adsorption energy is ordered: Ptiso ≪ Ptmetal < Ptox. Ptiso species exhibited a 2-fold greater turnover frequency for CO oxidation than 1 nm Ptmetal clusters but share an identical reaction mechanism. We propose the active catalytic sites are cationic interfacial Pt atoms bonded to TiO2 and that Ptiso exhibits optimal reactivity because every atom is exposed for catalysis and forms an interfacial site with TiO2. Reversible Transformation Between Terrace and Step Sites of Pt Nanoparticles on Titanium under CO and O2 Environments

Abstract:Understanding the dynamic evolution of active sites of supported metal catalysts during catalysis is fundamentally important for improving its performance,which attracts tremendous research in-terests in the past decades.There are two main surficial structures for metal catalysts:terrace sites and step sites,which exhibit catalytic activity discrepancy during catalysis.Herein,by using in situ transmission electron microscopy and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),the transformation between surface terrace and step sites of Pt-TiO2 catalysts was studied under CO and O2 environments.We found that the{111}step sites tend to form at{111}terrace under O2 environment,while these step sites prefer to transform into terrace under CO environment at ele-vated temperature.Meanwhile,quantitative ratios of terrace/step sites were obtained by in situ FTIR.It was found that this transformation between terrace sites and step sites was reversible dur-ing gas treatment cycling of CO and O2.The selective adsorption of O2 and CO species at different sites,which stabilized the step/terrace sites,was found to serve as the driving force for active sites transition by density functional theory calculations.Inspired by the in situ results,an enhanced catalytic activity of Pt-TiO2 catalysts was successfully achieved through tuning surface-active sites by gas treatments.

Abstract:Heterostructured TiO2 spheres with tunable interiors and shells were prepared by self-template technology. This structure is composed of a hollow shell and an inner core which can enhance light scattering in the hollow space and provide a large surface to generate sufficient active sites. Besides, the nanosheets grown on the shell layer not only increased their specific surface area, but also exposed more surface-active sites. The performance of photocatalysts was estimated by the RhB decolorization, and experimental results show that the photoactivity can be greatly improved by depositing noble metal nanoparticles. It improves the efficiency of charge utilization and enhances the overall catalytic performance from the three stages of charge carrier generation, separation and surface reaction. The strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) between the noble metal nanoparticles and the oxide support has been proven to inhibit the supported precious metal, one strategy for nanoparticle aggregation and growth. On the one hand, the nanoshells isolate the precious metal nanoparticles from each other, preventing the aggregation of metal nanoparticles.
Significance of Epitaxial Growth of PtO2 on Rutile TiO2 for Pt/TiO2 Catalysts.

Abstract:TiO2-supported Pt species have been widely applied in numerous critical reactions involving photo-, thermo-, and electrochemical-catalysis for decades. Manipulation of the state of the Pt species in Pt/TiO2 catalysts is crucial for fine-tuning their catalytic performance. Here, we report an interesting discovery showing the epitaxial growth of PtO2 atomic layers on rutile TiO2, potentially allowing control of the states of active Pt species in Pt/TiO2 catalysts. The presence of PtO2 atomic layers could modulate the geometric configuration and electronic state of the Pt species under reduction conditions, resulting in a spread of the particle shape and obtaining a Pt/PtO2/TiO2 structure with more positive valence of Pt species. As a result, such a catalyst exhibits exceptional electrocatalytic activity and stability toward hydrogen evolution reaction, while also promoting the thermocatalytic CO oxidation, surpassing the performance of the Pt/TiO2 catalyst with no epitaxial structure. This novel epitaxial growth of the PtO2 structure on rutile TiO2 in Pt/TiO2 catalysts shows its potential in the rational design of highly active and economical catalysts toward diverse catalytic reactions.
Anchoring Ultrafine Pt Electrocatalysts on TiO2-C Via Photochemical Strategy to Enhance the Stability and Efficiency for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:The activity and stability of Pt electrocatalysts are crucial issues for energy conversion systems involving oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this work, the ultrafine Pt nanoparticles were in situ reduced by the photogenerated electrons on TiO2 surface so that most of them selectively anchored around the TiO2 nanocrystals. The presence of well-dispersed TiO2 on carbon surface strengthened the metal-support interaction, giving rise to the improved ORR catalytic activity with similar to 49 mV positive shift of half-wave potential as compared to commercial 20 wt% Pt/C. More importantly, the Pt/TiO2-C catalysts exhibited a more durable performance after 10,000 cycles in terms of the decrease in electrochemical surface area (0.8%) and mass activity (0.9%), much lower than those of Pt/C (10.2% and 33.3%). The high-temperature durability test also revealed a much higher retention of ORR activity. The results demonstrated that anchoring Pt on well-dispersed TiO2-decorated carbon would be an effective strategy to enhance the ORR performance by strong metal-support interaction, which facilitated the electron transfer during catalytic reactions as well as prevented Pt aggregation during durability test.
