Abstract:The newly generated artificial structures, including phononic crystals, elastic metamaterials, acoustic black holes (ABHs) and elastic metasurfaces, can abnormally control wave propagations. In this paper, focusing on plate structures and from the perspective of the suppression of vibration and especially sound radiation by manipulating flexural waves, we give a thorough review of the advances of above-mentioned artificial structures, involving their extraordinary characteristics, corresponding mechanisms of vibration and sound radiation suppression, design methods of phase-gradient elastic metasurfaces, and some representative works on suppressing vibration and sound radiation of plates by flexural wave manipulations. Additionally, we compare the advantages and disadvantages of these artificial structures in vibration and sound radiation suppression. Finally, we look forward to the prospects on vibration and sound radiation suppression of plates based on wave manipulations. This paper will provide a timely and practical assistance to academic and technical researchers in the field of vibration and noise reduction.

Abstract:Acoustic metamaterials, artificial composite structures with exotic material properties used to control elastic waves, have become a new frontier in physics, materials science, engineering and chemistry. In this paper, the research progress and development prospect of acoustic metamaterials are reviewed. Related studies on passive acoustic metamaterials and active acoustic metamaterials are introduced and compared. Additionally, we discuss approaches to material structure design, including topology optimization approaches, as well as bio-inspired and fractal geometry-based approaches to structure design. Finally, we summarize and look forward to the prospects and directions of acoustic metamaterial research. With the development of additive manufacturing technology, the research potential of acoustic metamaterials is huge.

Abstract:Acoustics is a classical field of study that has witnessed tremendous developments over the past 25 years. Driven by the novel acoustic effects underpinned by phononic crystals with periodic modulation of elastic building blocks in wavelength scale and acoustic metamaterials with localized resonant units in subwavelength scale, researchers in diverse disciplines of physics, mathematics, and engineering have pushed the boundary of possibilities beyond those long held as unbreakable limits. More recently, structure designs guided by the physics of graphene and topological electronic states of matter have further broadened the whole field of acoustic metamaterials by phenomena that reproduce the quantum effects classically. Use of active energy-gain components, directed by the parity-time reversal symmetry principle, has led to some previously unexpected wave characteristics. It is the intention of this review to trace historically these exciting developments, substantiated by brief accounts of the salient milestones. The latter can include, but are not limited to, zero/negative refraction, subwavelength imaging, sound cloaking, total sound absorption, metasurface and phase engineering, Dirac physics and topology-inspired acoustic engineering, non-Hermitian parity-time synthetic active metamaterials, and one-way propagation of sound waves. These developments may underpin the next generation of acoustic materials and devices, and offer new methods for sound manipulation, leading to exciting applications in noise reduction, imaging, sensing and navigation, as well as communications.

Abstract:Acoustic metamaterials have opened up unprecedented possibilities for wave manipulation, and can be utilized to realize many novel and fascinating physical phenomena, such as acoustic self-collimation, cloaking, asymmetric transmission, and negative refraction. In this review, we explore the fundamental physics of acoustic metamaterials and introduce several exciting developments, including the realization of unconventional effective parameters, acoustic metasurface, total sound absorption, high-resolution imaging, parity-time-symmetric materials, and topological acoustics. Acoustic metamatetials with negative effective parameters that are not observed in nature expand acoustic properties of natural materials. Acoustic metasurfaces can exhibit wavefront-shaping capabilities, with thickness being much smaller than the wavelength. The precisely designed matematerials provide the new possibility of steering waves on a subwavelength scale, which can be used for acoustic high-resolution imaging beyond the diffraction limit. The metamaterial absorbers can achieve total sound absorption at low frequencies and exhibit broadband absorption spectrum. Moreover, structure designs guided by the topological physics further broaden the whole field of acoustic metamaterials. Phononic crystals have become aflexible platform for studying new physics and exotic phenomenarelated to topological phases. Finally, we conclude the developments of acoustic metamaterials, discuss the technical challenges, and introduce potential applications in this emerging field.

Abstract:Acoustic metasurfaces, as two-dimensional acoustic metamaterials, are a current research topic for their sub-wavelength thickness and excellent acoustic wave manipulation. They hold significant promise in noise reduction and isolation, cloaking, camouflage, acoustic imaging, and focusing. Resonant structural units are utilized to construct acoustic metasurfaces with the unique advantage of controlling large wavelengths within a small size. In this paper, the recent research progresses of the resonant metasurfaces are reviewed, covering the design mechanisms and advances of structural units, the classification and application of the resonant metasurfaces, and the tunable metasurfaces. Finally, research interest in this field is predicted in future.

Abstract:： The low-frequency mechanical wave has stronger penetration capability in dissemination process, so it is hard to be attenuated. Especially in infrasound range, the mechanical wave could resonance with body organs easily, and causing harm to health. In order to effectivly control the low-frequency mechanical wave, the solution for noise pollution problems in modern industrial production and daily life is given, by combining with the phononic crystals and acoustic metamaterials that have been developed in last decade. New methods for low-frequency vibration and noise reduction based on phononic crystals and acoustic metamaterials are systematically summarized and discussed. Typical sources of low-frequency vibration and noise, the existence difficulties to control it, and the harms to human body are summarized. The related works that passively control the low-frequency vibration and noise based on acoustic band gap characteristics of photonic crystal are summarized. Particularly, the specific methods and effects to achieve low-frequency vibration and noise attenuation by rod, plate and membrane structures with subwavelength size characteristics are reviewed. In the framework of the acoustic metamaterials, the applications of membrane-type structures in low-frequency vibration and noise attenuation, its advantages and disadvantages are discussed. Through a combination of practical engineering and the latest research developments, the problems still exist in this field and future trends are summarized. The result has some guiding value to promot the application of phononic crystals and acoustic metamaterials in engineering practice.

Abstract:Due to their potential properties unlike traditional materials and structures, elastic wave metamaterials have received significant interests in recent years. With the coupling between the acoustic and vibration, their mechanical characteristics can be tuned by the active feedback control system at low frequency ranges in which the traditional passive control is limited. This work illustrates that the superior performances of the effective mass density and sound pressure level (SPL) of an elastic wave metamaterial can be significantly changed by the active control, in which the periodic array of local resonators and orthogonal stiffeners are included. Significantly, based on the locally resonant mechanism, the negative density occurs over a frequency range. Due to the effects of lattice constant, structural damping and other parameters, the SPL with the function of fluid–solid coupling are illustrated and discussed.

Abstract:<p>With the active feedback control system on elastic wave metamaterials, this research is concentrated on the effective mass density and sound transmission by a harmonic incident sound pressure. The elastic wave metamaterials consist of double plates which are attached by the upper and lower four-link mechanisms being bonded with four lateral resonators. The vertical resonator in every unit cell is jointed by the active feedback control system which is connected by two four-link mechanisms. Using the dynamic effective medium method, the expressions of the effective mass density are obtained and the dynamic responses are presented. Based on the Bloch-Floquet theorem and Poisson summation formula, the sound transmission loss (STL) of this elastic wave metamaterial is shown by the principle of virtual work. This research also shows that the characteristics of the effective mass density and STL can be tuned by the acceleration and displacement feedback in the active control system. Furthermore, it is found that the dynamic response and STL are also changed obviously by different incident angles (including the elevation and azimuth angles), the periodicity spacing of local resonators and the structural damping.</p>

Abstract:Noise pollution has become a significant global problem in recent years. Unfortunately, conventional acoustic materials cannot offer substantial improvements in noise reduction. However, acoustic metamaterials are providing new solutions for controlling sound waves, and have huge potential for mitigating noise propagation in particular. Recently, owing to the rapid development of acoustic metamaterials, metamaterials for acoustic noise reduction have drawn the attention of researchers worldwide. These metamaterials are often both light and compact, and are excellent at reducing low-frequency noise, which is difficult to control with conventional acoustic materials. Recent progress has illustrated that acoustic metamaterials effectively control sound waves, and optimizing their structure can enable functionality based on new physical phenomena. This review introduces the development of acoustic metamaterials, and summarizes the basic classification, underlying physical mechanism, application scenarios, and emerging research trends for both passive and active noise-reduction metamaterials. Focusing on noise reduction, the shortcomings of current technologies are discussed, and future development trends are predicted. As our knowledge in this area continues to expand, it is expected that acoustic metamaterials will continue to improve and find more practical applications in emerging fields in the future.

Abstract:The traditional sound absorption problem has not been completely resolved over the last 200 years. At every stage, its research has changed depending on practical requirements and current technologies. Phononic crystals (PCs) and acoustic metamaterials (AMs) have gained attention because of their extensive investigation and development over the past 30 years. Especially, the use of these materials brings new vitality into the traditional sound absorption problem to figure out broad working band and low-frequency absorption. This review highlights recent progress in sound absorption—from airborne to waterborne absorption—and gradient-index AMs. Progress in gradient-index AMs is singled out because of their favorable impedance matching, good viscous and thermal dissipation, and lengthened propagation paths compared with those of other materials. The progress in sound absorption of PCs and AMs is promising to serve as the next-generation sound absorbing materials, trap and reuse acoustic energy, and attenuate earthquake/tsunami wave in the future.

Abstract:Acoustic metamaterials（AMMs） are a type of artificial materials that make use of appropriate structural designs and exhibit exotic properties not found in natural materials,such as negative effective material parameters（e.g.,bulk modulus,mass density,and refractive index）.These interesting properties offer novel means for sound manipulation and thus have drawn a great deal of attention.Over the past two decades,tremendous progress has been made in the fundamental research of AMMs,which has not only promoted the development of modern acoustics but also shown the potential of AMMs for engineering applications.Here,we review recent developments in AMMs with a focus on their future engineering,especially in the most promising fields of sound absorption/isolation,acoustic imaging,cloaking,and so on,furthermore,we outline the opportunities and challenges they are encountering.

Abstract:In the past two decades, the research on acoustic metamaterials has flourished, which is also benefited from the development of additive manufacturing technology. The exotic physical phenomena and principles exhibited by acoustic metamaterials have attracted widespread attention from academia and engineering communities, which can be applied to noise reduction and acoustic nondestructive testing in industrial; invisible cloaking and camouflage in the military; medical ultrasound imaging in national health; acoustic stealth in defense security, detection in the ocean, communication, and other fields, i.e., acoustic metamaterials have important scientific research value and broad application prospects. This review summarizes the history and research status of acoustic metamaterials, focusing on the main research progress of metamaterials in nonlinear acoustic and acoustic coatings fields, including the research on acoustic coatings with cavities of our group. Finally, the future development direction of acoustic metamaterials is prospected, and the difficulties and challenges faced by the actual engineering of acoustic metamaterials are discussed, such as difficulties in mass production, hydrostatic pressure resistant property, omnidirectional wave control, high production costs, and so on.

Abstract:Low- and medium-frequency noise from ship cabins is difficult to control effectively. Excessive noise can seriously affect the acoustic stealth performance of ships. A novel membrane-type acoustic metamaterial is proposed in this paper with light weight and good sound insulation performance at low frequencies. The sound insulation performance of the metamaterial structure is analysed by using the acoustic-solid coupling module in COMSOL software. Then, the ability to change the sound insulation performance of membrane-type acoustic metamaterials with cell structure and material parameters is obtained. The research results in this paper provide powerful technical support for noise control in ship cabins.

Abstract:The concept of metamaterial recently emerged as a new frontier of scientific research, encompassing physics, materials science and engineering. In a broad sense, a metamaterial indicates an engineered material with exotic properties not found in nature, obtained by appropriate architecture either at macro-scale or at micro-/nano-scales. The architecture of metamaterials can be tailored to open unforeseen opportunities for mechanical and acoustic applications, as demonstrated by an impressive and increasing number of studies. Abstract:A bi-functional metamaterial is proposed for acoustic and electromagnetic manipulation simultaneously by Qiang Cheng, Tie Jun Cui, and co-workers, in article number 1800161. Under the illumination of sound, large acoustic insulation is achieved owing to the resonant modes within the double membrane structure. In the meanwhile, polarization-dependent responses are generated for microwave by attaching anisotropic meta-atoms on the membrane. This scheme is especially beneficial for developing such bi-functional devices in the future.

Abstract:Using monophase core materials to design periodically acoustic metamaterials with vibration isolation properties and special acoustic properties that do not exist in natural bulk solids is a challenging and innovative work. In this paper, we proposed an innovative star-shaped acoustic metamaterials with periodic assemblies based on the double-negative properties generated by rotational resonance, monopolar resonance and dipole resonance. At the same time, the metastructures would generate broad and multiple omnidirectional band gaps through the rotational resonance of the spherical masses. In addition, the rationally designed arc-shaped ligaments could produce reversible deformations under the excitation of external strains, thereby realizing preliminary tuning of the band gaps. Numerical simulations with the finite element method provided effective data support for the above research, and proved that the proposed architected microstructures would provide reference for vibration reduction and the design of acoustic lens metamaterials.

A controllable low-frequency broadband sound absorbing metasurface

Abstract:Low-frequency noise control has aroused continuous interests owing to the intolerant structural thickness of traditional sound absorbing materials comparable to the working wavelength. The low-frequency sound absorbing materials remain challenging in scientific and engineering communities until now. Herein, a controllable broadband sound absorbing metasurface is designed and fabricated successfully by combining micro-perforated panel, coiled channel and embedded partition boards with the thickness of only 7 cm. The proposed metasurface possesses an average absorption coefficient over 0.8 within 0 degrees-75 degrees wide incident angle. Most importantly, the frequency of the absorption peak could be tuned flexibly by changing the number of partition boards in the cavity, providing an effective way for sound absorption on-demand design. The proposed acoustic metasurface opens the possibility of real-life application in low-frequency noise control engineering field.
