Abstract:Piano performance motor learning research requires more "artful" methodologies if it is to meaningfully address music performance as a corporeal art. To date, research has been sparse and it has typically constrained multiple performance variables in order to isolate specific phenomena. This approach has denied the fundamental ethos of music performance which, for elite performers, is an act of interpretation, not mere reproduction. Piano performances are intentionally manipulated for artistic expression. We documented motor movements in the complex task of performance of the first six measures of Chopin's "Revolutionary" Etude by two anthropometrically different elite pianists. We then discussed their motor strategy selections as influenced by anthropometry and the composer's musical directives. To quantify the joint angles of the trunk, shoulders, elbows, and wrists, we used a VICON 3 D motion capture system and biomechanical modeling. A Kistler force plate (1 N, Swiss) quantified center of gravity (COG) shifts. Changes in COG and trunk angles had considerable influence on the distal segments of the upper limbs. The shorter pianist used an anticipatory strategy, employing larger shifts in COG and trunk angles to produce dynamic stability as compensation for a smaller stature. Both pianists took advantage of low inertial left shoulder internal rotation and adduction to accommodate large leaps in the music. For the right arm, motor strategizing was confounded by rests in the music. These two cases illustrated, in principle, that expert pianists' individualized motor behaviors can be explained as compensatory efforts to accommodate both musical goals and anthropometric constraints. Motor learning among piano students can benefit from systematic attention to motor strategies that consider both of these factors.
An Examination of Trunk and Right-Hand Coordination in Piano Performance: A Case Comparison of Three Pianists

Abstract:Playing the piano at expert levels typically involves significant levels of trial-and-error learning since the majority of practice occurs in isolation. To better optimize musical outcomes, pianists might be well served by emulating some of the practices found in sports, where motor learning strategies are grounded in biomechanics and ergonomics in order to improve performance and reduce risk of performance-related injuries. The purpose of the current study is to examine trunk-hand coordination and preparatory movement strategization in piano performance, while considering the influence of anthropometry, skill level of the performer, and musical context. Using a ten-camera motion capture system, movement of C7 and right-hand distal phalanges was tracked at three different playing speeds during performance of an excerpt from Beethoven's "Appassionata" Sonata. There were three participants: two males and one female of differing anthropometric characteristics and skill levels. Motor strategization was examined. Expertise influenced starting trunk position: Initiation intervals and trunk range of motion (ROM) both suggested anthropometry to be a performance factor. For the shortest performer, trunk movement appeared to be used as an efficiency measure to compensate for a shorter arm reach. Skill level was revealed by examining right-hand velocity at the fastest tempo. The current study hypothesizes that an examination of proximal-to-distal preparatory strategies in terms of anthropometry and skill level can help to optimize motor learning for pianists. To realize piano performance as a whole-body skill and encourage healthy practice, pedagogy needs to educate learners regarding fundamental biomechanical and ergonomic principles, movement optimization, and movement strategization in the service of artful performance.

Temporal exploration in sequential movements shapes efficient neuromuscular control

Abstract:The interaction of early and deliberate practice with genetic predisposition endows experts with virtuosic motor performance. However, it has not been known whether ways of practicing shape motor virtuosity. Here, we addressed this issue by comparing the effects of rhythmic variation in motor practice on neuromuscular control of the finger movements in pianists. With the use of a novel electromyography system with miniature active electrodes, we recorded the activity of the intrinsic hand muscles of 27 pianists while they played the piano and analyzed it by using a nonnegative matrix factorization algorithm and cluster analysis. The result demonstrated that practicing a target movement sequence with various rhythms reduced muscular activity, whereas neither practicing a sequence with a single rhythm nor taking a rest without practicing changed the activity. In addition, practice with rhythmic variation changed the patterns of simultaneous activations across muscles. This alteration of muscular coordination was associated with decreased activation of muscles not only relevant to, but also irrelevant to the task performance. In contrast, piano practice improved the maximum speed of the performance, the amount of which was independent of whether rhythmic variation was present. These results suggest that temporal variation in movement sequences during practice co-optimizes both movement speed and neuromuscular efficiency, which emphasizes the significance of ways of practice in the acquisition of motor virtuosity. NEW & NOTEWORTHY A key question in motor neuroscience is whether "ways of practicing" contribute to shaping motor virtuosity. We found both attenuation of activities and alteration of coordination of the intrinsic hand muscles of pianists, specifically through practicing a movement sequence with various rhythms. The maximum speed of the finger movements was also enhanced following the practice. These results emphasize the importance of ways of practicing in facilitating multiple skills: efficiency and speed.

Abstract:International Journal of Music Education, Ahead of Print. Across the globe, students begin and continue learning the piano for various reasons. For many this can be an engaging and enjoyable activity which enhances their commitment to learning. Foundational in this process, practice is an essential part of piano learning. Without the excitement of performing for others, for some practice may become uninteresting and repetitious. Ultimately, boredom may affect piano learners and obstruct their commitment and progress. In this article, we explore what motivates upper primary and secondary school piano learners to practice and how piano teachers can stimulate piano learners' intrinsic motivations. We observed 34 upper primary and secondary school piano learners' lessons in Melbourne, Australia. Subsequently, we interviewed the participants. Following thematic analysis, the findings revealed that students' engagement with practice is influenced by their emotions, and by extrinsic factors such as parental support for practice. We offer new interpretations of how to connect self-determination theory to self-regulation learning based on previous scholar's works. This article can inform music educators in motivating students' piano practice and leading students to achieve progress.

Abstract:The results of successful training of students of music and pedagogy at piano lessons depend on their technical level, and possession of an entire range of skills for the implementation of performance tasks. However, effective development is hindered by psychophysiological factors, namely excessive hand clenching, the inability to rationally use the necessary muscle groups and to distribute the load on the body in a balanced manner. The purpose of the study is to analyse the process of development of performance skills through the understanding of psychophysiological characteristics. The methodological basis was established by the works of Ukrainian and foreign scholars, pianists and teachers. A set of methods was used to solve the tasks: analysis, systematisation, classification, and generalisation of pedagogical experience. Descriptive and didactic methods were used to outline technical performance problems and ways to solve them; the method of pedagogical observation was used to test and confirm the effectiveness of the chosen methodology. The research emphasises the key points of correction of body posture, which help to eliminate excessive stiffness of movements, and overstrain of weaker muscle groups and have a positive impact on the development of performing freedom. First and foremost, it’s about sitting properly at the tool, developing a sense of the weight of the hand at rest and during lifting. The research offers tested exercises that ensure the fixation of optimal muscle sensations in the shoulder girdle area, especially in the area of the scapula and shoulder joint, during various arm movements. Another common problem is insufficient attention to the functioning of the finger extensor muscles, which impedes the development of their dexterity and independence and causes wrist stiffness. The significance of educating students to consciously master primary motor skills based on specific muscle sensations is substantiated. The results of the study prove that a certain algorithm of actions in the setting of the game apparatus and the correction of deficiencies can ensure the stability of performing freedom, self-control and self-regulation of motor actions.

Abstract:Blind children can benefit from music education as it enhances their musical skills and auditory abilities. However, blind children in China face challenges in pursuing music education due to issues such as social stigma and lack of qualified teachers. Moreover, research in this area is lacking. On the basis of the PERMA (positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, accomplishment) framework, this study attempts to identify the positive psychology of blind children’s piano learning among teachers, blind students, and parents. This study aims to to fill the research gap of piano learning among blind children. Interviews were conducted with piano teachers, blind students, and their parents (N=56) using a qualitative research methodology through PERMA framework. The data identified that piano teachers’ instruction was influenced by their preparation of teaching and personal attitudes. Findings also revealed that the positive emotion, sense of engagement, and positive relationships, impacted the accomplishment and achievement of all participants. This study demonstrates that teachers’ preparation experience and positive attitudes, engagement, and building rapport with blind children and their parents are crucial to promoting their piano learning. This study offers readers the chance to get insight into the field of piano instruction for the blind as well as illumination from thought and empirical support for piano teachers and music educators in inclusive music education in China.

Abstract:This study investigates the impact of augmented reality (AR) technologies on the development of motor skills, specifically left-hand piano playing skills, among piano students. The paper employed the AR Piano application, which generates three-dimensional, intuitively understandable visualizations aimed at facilitating the piano learning process, thereby minimizing the cognitive load on students. The Piano Proficiency Test-2 was used to analyze piano playing skills. The sample consisted of 297 right-handed third-year students from three educational institutions in China. According to the post-test results, the experimental group, which underwent training utilizing augmented reality (AR) technology, exhibited significantly greater skill level improvement following the experimental period compared to the control group. These findings suggest a positive effect of AR technology application on the development of motor skills and may provide valuable insights to researchers exploring the application of AR technologies in diverse educational settings, particularly for musical instrument instruction.

Abstract:The piano is one of the most popular musical instruments among children. Playing the piano requires some effort from both children and teachers. At the same time, life puts forward new requirements for mastering advanced teaching methods that can provide maximum results. Piano teachers are faced with the task of making learning as meaningful, interesting, and personality-oriented as possible. With this in mind, the issues of finding, developing and implementing alternative forms and methods of organizing training, new advanced pedagogical ideas, as well as the latest educational technologies in the process of learning to play the piano are considered important. After all, technological progress does not stand still. Modern technologies are developing so actively that literally everyone has new products that seemed inaccessible yesterday. Therefore, the task of a modern teacher is to constantly monitor the emergence of new forms, methods of work, new technologies and effective means to maximize the stimulation of creative activity of students. Using the achievements of Advanced Science and technology significantly helps not only to activate students ' attention, but also to achieve significantly better learning outcomes. After all, modern children are the so – called "digital generation", brought up from childhood on free access to digital technologies of our time. This tendency to constantly technize our lives has both positive and negative aspects, but we cannot avoid it. Therefore, it is necessary to find the optimal balance in the use of modern technologies, the latest teaching methods and musical and game activities in the process of learning to play the piano. Modern innovations are designed to form the desire of piano students for independent learning, ideally-lifelong learning. Hierarchical Optimal Motion Planning for Piano Playing Robots With Dexterous Fingers

Abstract:Humanoid robots with dexterous operation ability have been widely used in the field of human daily entertainment. However, for music performance objectives, it is still a challenging issue to achieve efficient trajectory planning for piano playing robots with multiple degrees of freedom fingers, which can be as dexterous as a human hand and adapt to different musical styles. Based on the self-built humanoid piano playing robot, this paper proposes a continuous motion planning method from piano score to robot finger end movements. First, a hierarchical motion planning framework combining global discrete actions with local continuous actions is proposed, which simultaneously realizes finger assignment based on piano scores and continuous action for the entire robotic arm. Moreover, on the basis of the Gaussian pseudospectral method, an energy optimal motion planning method and a minimal oscillation motion planning scheme are proposed for fingers and arms, respectively, which can increase the continuity of actions, optimize working efficiency, and improve stability during piano performance.
A Phenomenological Study of the Learning Issues and Teaching Strategies in Piano Teaching in China

Abstract:In China, many young piano learners below the pre-college level would take graded examinations to validate their learning outcomes, however, scholars and pedagogues acknowledge there is an existing discrepancy between grade achievement and actual playing abilities. The current study scrutinizes the learning issues of the students in this context and the teaching strategies applied by the teachers. This study employed a qualitative approach, and a semi-structured interview was conducted with twelve piano teachers, and lesson observations were conducted during their lessons with one of their students. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was carried out based on the interview data and the content analysis was conducted towards the observation data. The findings demonstrated that the students suffered from five aspects of learning issues, namely music reading, skill acquisition, memorization, interpretation, and performance anxiety. To resolve those issues, the teacher participants addressed 13 common teaching strategies. However, after the data triangulation it was found that there was inconsistency in monitoring of students’ learning progress in accordance with the strategies presented by the teachers; under the context of the graded examination preparation, memorization, interpretation, and performance anxiety were among the critical issues.

Abstract:Background and Aim: Qingdao Art School is implementing a holistic piano education approach, combining traditional and modern techniques to prepare students for the evolving musical world and develop diverse skills. Materials and Methods: This study aimed to survey teacher’s perspectives on piano teaching strategies at Qingdao Art School. This study used qualitative research methodology, including semi-structured interviews with piano teachers at Qingdao Art School, to understand their teaching methods. Key areas of focus included pedagogical approaches, experiences with different strategies, challenges faced, and perspectives on effectiveness. The interview guideline was used to gather in-depth insights, with eight questions posed to experts. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, with essential analysis steps including thematic coding, theme grouping, direct interpretation, and data presentation. Results: The text provides a comprehensive guide to teaching music theory, focusing on various pedagogical approaches. It suggests blended learning, collaborative projects, improvisational techniques, diverse musical genres, and gamification for accessibility. Challenges in teaching include adaptive teaching strategies, personalized music selection, practice routines, classroom community building, and integrating new technologies. Methods are promoted through active learning, digital resources, and flexible scheduling. Technology integration is highlighted, with music software, virtual performances, and AR/VR tools. Professional development opportunities are discussed, and student engagement and motivation are discussed. Evaluation and feedback are also discussed, considering technical skills and musical expression. Conclusion: The text offers a comprehensive guide to teaching music theory, highlighting various pedagogical approaches and challenges, while promoting active learning, digital resources, and technology integration.

Abstract:Finger technique is a crucial aspect of piano learning, and hand exoskeleton mechanisms effectively assist novice piano players in maintaining correct finger technique consistently. Addressing current issues with exoskeleton robots, such as the inability to provide continuous correction of finger technique and their considerable weight, a novel hand exoskeleton robot has been developed to enhance finger technique through continuous correction and reduced weight. Initial data are gathered using finger joint angle sensors to analyze movements during piano playing, focusing on the trajectory and angular velocity of key strikes. This analysis informs the design of a 6-bar double-closed-loop mechanism with an end equivalent sliding pair, using analytical methods to establish the relationship between motor extension and input rod rotation. Simulation studies assess the exoskeleton’s motion space and dynamics, confirming its capability to meet structural and functional demands for accurate key striking. Prototype testing validates the exoskeleton’s ability to maintain correct finger positioning and mimic natural strike speeds, thus improving playing technique while ensuring comfort and safety.

Abstract:Since the 1990s, the rapid development of the Internet promoted the daily life in China, especially the education system. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented challenges as well as opportunities for music education. Teachers and students need to explore new methods to address the situation. This study focuses on enlightenment piano teaching, especially young children. Based on Piaget's theory of cognitive development, several teaching methods for early childhood piano instruction will be proposed in this article to help more piano teachers understand the age characteristics of pre-school children and to better assist piano instruction. In offline piano lessons, teachers may start lessons with their fingers on the keyboard and text materials. In online piano lessons, teachers can utilize various types of media for teaching. In the near future, online education could prove to be more effective. This study aims to analyze the advantages and disadvantages, and provide effective guidelines for online piano education.

Passive somatosensory training enhances piano skill in adolescent and adult pianists: A preliminary study

Abstract:Sensory afferent information, such as auditory and somatosensory feedback while moving, plays a crucial role in both control and learning of motor performance across the lifespan. Music performance requires skillful integration of multimodal sensory information for the production of dexterous movements. However, it has not been understood what roles somatosensory afferent information plays in the acquisition and sophistication of specialized motor skills of musicians across different stages of development. In the present preliminary study, we addressed this issue by using a novel technique with a hand exoskeleton robot that can externally move the fingers of pianists. Short-term exposure to fast and complex finger movements generated by the exoskeleton (i.e., passive movements) increased the maximum rate of repetitive piano keystrokes by the pianists. This indicates that somatosensory inputs derived from the externally generated motions enhanced the quickness of the sequential finger movements in piano performance, even though the pianists did not voluntarily move the fingers. The enhancement of motor skill through passive somatosensory training using the exoskeleton was more pronounced in adolescent pianists than adult pianists. These preliminary results implicate a sensitive period of neuroplasticity of the somatosensory-motor system of trained pianists, which emphasizes the importance of somatosensory-motor training in professional music education during adolescence.
Volitional Control of the Paretic Hand Post-Stroke Increases Finger Stiffness and Resistance to Robot-Assisted Movement

Abstract:Increased effort during use of the paretic arm and hand can provoke involuntary abnormal synergy patterns and amplify stiffness effects of muscle tone for individuals after stroke, which can add difficulty for user-controlled devices to assist hand movement during functional tasks. We study how volitional effort, exerted in an attempt to open or close the hand, affects resistance to robot-assisted movement at the finger level. We perform experiments with three chronic stroke survivors to measure changes in stiffness when the user is actively exerting effort to activate ipsilateral EMG-controlled robot-assisted hand movements, compared with when the fingers are passively stretched, as well as overall effects from sustained active engagement and use. Our results suggest that active engagement of the upper extremity increases muscle tone in the finger to a much greater degree than through passive-stretch or sustained exertion over time. Potential design implications of this work suggest that developers should anticipate higher levels of finger stiffness when relying on user-driven ipsilateral control methods for assistive or rehabilitative devices for stroke.

Abstract:To improve the control effectiveness and make the prosthetic hand not only controllable but also perceivable, an EMG prosthetic hand control strategy was proposed in this paper. The control strategy consists of EMG self-learning motion recognition, backstepping controller with stiffness fuzzy observation, and force tactile representation. EMG self-learning motion recognition is used to reduce the influence on EMG signals caused by the uncertainty of the contacting position of the EMG sensors. Backstepping controller with stiffness fuzzy observation is used to realize the position control and grasp force control. Velocity proportional control in free space and grasp force tracking control in restricted space can be realized by the same controller. The force tactile representation helps the user perceive the states of the prosthetic hand. Several experiments were implemented to verify the effect of the proposed control strategy. The results indicate that the proposed strategy has effectiveness. During the experiments, the comments of the participants show that the proposed strategy is a better choice for amputees because of the improved controllability and perceptibility.

However, in the process of piano teaching in preschool education, teachers often adopt the traditional mode, which makes students have poor learning enthusiasm and are not active in learning. In view of this situation, professional teachers need to change their teaching methods in time and constantly improve the piano playing ability of students majoring in preschool education. This paper is mainly based on the actual situation in the specific practice teaching process, and puts forward some relevant solutions for the listed and concretely analyzed problems. I hope that this study will be helpful to my peers.
Effects of two modalities of practice on the learning of piano pieces under the deprivation of auditory feedback

Abstract:Psychology of Music, Ahead of Print. Sixteen piano students learned four piano pieces under two different conditions that involved the deprivation of auditory and motor feedback. One condition required study away from the piano, thus implying the removal of auditory and kinaesthetic feedback (mental practice, MP). The other condition involved study on a digital piano that was turned off (motor practice, MoP), hence depriving the participant of auditory feedback. Data on the effects of the two different modalities of practice, which also excluded external sound references during the initial study of new piano pieces, were analysed in two different ways. First, video recordings of the participants' practice sessions were analysed to identify behaviours exhibited during these sessions, quantified by number of incidences. Second, external referees assessed final performances (audio recordings on an acoustic piano) according to four proposed parameters related to piano performance. Data from semi-structured interviews were collected as well. The results showed differences between the two conditions, especially with respect to the utilisation of support activities and pauses during practice. The analysis indicated that procedures related to MP may yield better results when the musical material is approached as small portions one at a time. Finally, the modality of MP described in this article, which bears some relation to other forms of MP, could be a valid alternative for issues of fatigue and complexity related to MP, as has been traditionally described in the literature.
