Abstract:Arguably, social work research and practice have always been attentive to place and space. In community social work, for example, the locality, the street and the neighbourhood as a geographical space has been the pivotal point of intervention, building on the rich historical tradition of the Settlement movement (<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Henderson and Thomas, 2002</a>). Those working with youth draw on a deep sociological literature referencing the significance of territory to young people (particularly urban territory) which has prompted approaches that aim to remove young people from deleterious influences and immerse them in productive personhood building activity in elsewhere (often rural) places. There has also been a strong tradition of defining practice approaches in institutional spaces and settings, namely residential social work and a strong literature on disability access which has place and space in mind. In social work with Indigenous peoples, the concept of attachment to land and place has been central, and reservations, townships or town camps have been the focus of service incursions of many kinds (<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Bennett and Green, 2012</a>). Rural social work as a set of distinct practices has perhaps commanded the most attention in this respect. Rural social work has focused on questions of locality like access to services and issues of identity and belonging. The intersections of the global and local have also been given attention in the rural and in particular how global practices and policies shape agricultural and rural economies, options for work and the possibility of living in or leaving rural areas (<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Bryant, 2015a</a>; <a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Bryant and Garnham, 2017</a>; <a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Bryant and Pini, 2011</a>; <a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Cheers, 1998</a>; <a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Pugh, 2003</a>; <a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Pugh and Cheers, 2010</a>).
