Abstract:Efficient and rapid removal of antibiotic residues in water is important for environmental remediation. Herein, a novel Fe3O4nanoparticles dispersed in nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres (Fe3O4@N-HCS) with a high specific surface area was constructed, which stabilized through soft ligands via the solvothermal method. The Fe3O4@N-HCS as a peroxidase-like (POD-like) not only exhibits impressive activity to efficiently generate •OH by stimulated H2O2, but also presents excellent stability and recyclability superior to conventional environmental catalysts. The enhanced effect of Fe3O4@N-HCS POD-like activity was elucidated by experimentation and theoretical calculations, which originated from the synergistic effect of delocalization of N-HCS and Fe3O4NPS could facilitate electron transfer. As a result, norfloxacin (NOR) was adsorbed more than 60% by Fe3O4@N-HCS in 10 min and completely degraded within 60 min by •OH generated from Fe3O4@N-HCS POD-like, with only a 17% decrease in initial removal efficiency after 10 cyclic runs. Furthermore, the attacked sites of NOR were predicted by using the Fukui function, and the degradation pathways of NOR were proposed. The NOR intermediate demonstrated a low ecotoxicological risk, as evaluated by the Ecological Structure Activity Relationship assessment. Briefly, this work provided a solution for purifying and detoxifying trace amounts of antibiotics from the water body.
