Abstract:Polyolefins, widely used for packaging, construction, and electronics, facilitate daily life but cause severe environmental pollution when discarded after usage. Chemical recycling of polyolefins has received widespread attention for eliminating polyolefin pollution, as it is promising to convert polyolefin wastes to high-value chemicals (e.g., fuels, light olefins, aromatic hydrocarbons). However, the chemical recycling of polyolefins typically involves high-viscosity, high-temperature and high-pressure, and its efficiency depends on the catalytic materials, reaction conditions, and more essentially, on the reactors which are overlooked in previous studies. Herein, this review first introduces the mechanisms and influencing factors of polyolefin waste upcycling, followed by a brief overview of in situ and ex situ processes. Emphatically, the review focuses on the various reactors used in polyolefin recycling (i.e., batch/semi-batch reactor, fixed bed reactor, fluidized bed reactor, conical spouted bed reactor, screw reactor, molten metal bed reactor, vertical falling film reactor, rotary kiln reactor and microwave-assisted reactor) and their respective merits and demerits. Nevertheless, challenges remain in developing highly efficient reacting techniques to realize the practical application. In light of this, the review is concluded with recommendations and prospects to enlighten the future of polyolefin upcycling.
Oxidative Upcycling of Polyolefin Wastes into the Dynamically Cross-Linked Elastomer

Abstract:Oxidative cracking of polyolefins into functionalized molecules or oligomers promises the chemical upcycling of plastic wastes. In this work, we develop a novel approach to polyolefin waste upcycling that utilizes low-temperature oxidative cracking combined with dynamic cross-linking to produce recyclable elastomers. High-density polyethylene is oxidized into functionalized oligomers with end carboxyl groups at 110 degrees C, achieving tunable number-average molecular weights (M n) ranging from 1500 to 5500 Da at distributions (D) between 2.91 and 3.33. These oligomers with high crystallinity directly react with amorphous cis-polybutadiene containing pendant epoxy groups (an oxidized product of cis-polybutadiene) through esterification, forming a dynamically cross-linked elastomer. The elastomer displays a low glass transition temperature (T g) of approximately -100 degrees C while maintaining a melting point (T m) above 80 degrees C; it showcases a Young ' s modulus (E) of 12.0 +/- 0.4 MPa, elongation at break (epsilon) of 600 +/- 28%, tensile strength (sigma) of 16.4 +/- 0.8 MPa, tensile toughness (U T) of 46.0 +/- 3.5 MJ center dot m-3, and a good elasticity with 81.8% elastic recovery in a 10-cycle tensile test, even higher than that of commercial POEs such as POE-8150 of Dow Company. The dynamic ester-bond-based cross-linking enables the elastomer to be reprocessed. Our study introduces an efficient chemical upcycling process for polyolefin wastes, eliminating the need for tedious separation steps of cracking products.

Abstract:Poly(cyclopentene carbonate) (PCPC) produced by copolymerization of CO2 and cyclopentene oxide (CPO) is a promising but challenging chemical recyclable polymer that has high potential in minimizing plastic pollution and maximizing CO2 utilization. Currently, problems remain to be solved, include low reactivity of toxic metal catalysts, inevitable byproducts, and especially the ambiguous mechanism understanding. Herein, we present the first metal-free access to PCPC by using a series of modular dinuclear organoboron catalysts. PCPC was afforded in an unprecedented catalytic efficiency of 1.0 kg of PCPC/g of catalyst; while the depolymerization of PCPC abides by a combination pathway of random chain scission and chain unzipping, returning CPO in near-quantitative yield (>99 %). The preparation and depolymerization of PCPC along with in depth understanding of related mechanisms would be helpful for further development of advanced catalysts and recyclable plastics.

Abstract:To cope with the severe plastic waste crisis, massive efforts are made to develop sustainable polymer materials whose degradation involves a disposing and decomposing to small molecule (DDM) and/or a chemical recycling to monomer (CRM) process. Polyacetals, a type of pH-responsive polymers, are degradable under acidic conditions, while highly stable under neutral and basic circumstances. As for their synthesis, the cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) of cyclic acetals is an elegant and promising approach, though suffering from fatal side reactions and polymerization-depolymerization equilibrium. Recent development in CRM restimulates the interest in the long-forgotten CROP method due to its inherent depolymerization characteristics. In terms of the end-of-life options, polyacetals are recyclable materials with both DDM and CRM potentials. They not only expand the scope of materials for closed-loop recycling but also help to tune the degradation properties of traditional polyesters and polyolefins. This review aims to discuss the synthesis of various polyacetals by CROP and their degradation properties from the perspectives of 1) polymerization of cyclic acetals, dioxepins, and hemiacetal esters, 2) copolymerization of cyclic acetals with heterocyclic or vinyl monomers, and 3) degradation and recycling properties of the related polymers.
Closed-loop recycling of polyethylene-like materials

Abstract:Plastics are key components of almost any technology today. Although their production consumes substantial feedstock resources, plastics are largely disposed of after their service life. In terms of a circular economy1-8, reuse of post-consumer sorted polymers ('mechanical recycling') is hampered by deterioration of materials performance9,10. Chemical recycling1,11 via depolymerization to monomer offers an alternative that retains high-performance properties. The linear hydrocarbon chains of polyethylene12 enable crystalline packing and provide excellent materials properties13. Their inert nature hinders chemical recycling, however, necessitating temperatures above 600 degrees Celsius and recovering ethylene with a yield of less than 10 per cent3,11,14. Here we show that renewable polycarbonates and polyesters with a low density of in-chain functional groups as break points in a polyethylene chain can be recycled chemically by solvolysis with a recovery rate of more than 96 per cent. At the same time, the break points do not disturb the crystalline polyethylene structure, and the desirable materials properties (like those of high-density polyethylene) are fully retained upon recycling. Processing can be performed by common injection moulding and the materials are well-suited for additive manufacturing, such as 3D printing. Selective removal from model polymer waste streams is possible. In our approach, the initial polymers result from polycondensation of long-chain building blocks, derived by state-of-the-art catalytic schemes from common plant oil feedstocks, or microalgae oils15. This allows closed-loop recycling of polyethylene-like materials.

Abstract:The scientific challenge currently receiving much attention is the catalytic conversion of non-biodegradable polymers into versatile chemical platform molecules. As a model of a chemical upcycling process, we have developed a homogeneous catalytic system to break down persistent polyethylene waste into valuable chemical intermediates that could ultimately be used to produce important chemical products, including environmentally friendly, biodegradable plastics. In the first step, a smart pyrolysis of polyolefin waste yields oils, containing long-chain olefins as the major components. Then, for the next transformation step, tailored BICAAC-Ru olefin metathesis catalysts were used in combination with an alkene isomerization catalyst (RuHCl(CO)(PPh3)3) for the transformation of the pyrolysis oil to propylene via isomerization metathesis (ISOMET) reaction in ethylene atmosphere. Eventually, translation of the highly efficient single-metal catalyst system enabled ISOMET reaction to a 900 mL reactor setup and repetitive batch experiments could prove the long-term stability of the catalyst system and the highest turn over number (TON = 3800) reported so far for propylene using polyethylene municipal waste feedstock. Propylene content in the gas phase achieved the 20 vol%. Ultimately, these results pave the way for the large-scale applicability of this process as a relevant demonstration of the combined application of adapted catalyst design and chemical engineering optimization with the aim of establishing a multi-dimensional circular economy concept in the chemical industry.

Chemical Recycling of Polyethylene by Tandem Catalytic Conversion to Propylene

Abstract:Although polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) are by far the world's largest volume plastics, only a tiny fraction of these energy-rich polyolefins are currently recycled. Depolymerization of PE to its constituent monomer, ethylene, is highly endothermic and conventionally accessible only through unselective, high-temperature pyrolysis. Here, we provide experimental demonstrations of our recently proposed tandem catalysis strategy, which uses ethylene to convert PE to propylene, the commodity monomer used to make PP. The approach combines rapid olefin metathesis with rate-limiting isomerization. Monounsaturated PE is progressively disassembled at modest temperatures via many consecutive ethenolysis events, resulting selectively in propylene. Fully saturated PE can be converted to unsaturated PE starting with a single transfer dehydrogenation to ethylene, which produces a small amount of ethane (1 equiv per dehydrogenation event). These principles are demonstrated using both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. While selectivity under batch conditions is limited at high conversion by the formation of an equilibrium mixture of olefins, high selectivity to propylene (≥94%) is achieved in a semicontinuous process due to the continuous removal of propylene from the reaction mixture.
Dual Recycling of Depolymerization Catalyst and Biodegradable Polyester that Markedly Outperforms Polyolefins

Abstract:Chemically recyclable, circular polymers continue to attract increasing attention, but rendering both catalysts for depolymerization and high-performance polymers recyclable is a more sustainable yet challenging goal. Here we introduce a dual catalyst/polymer recycling system in that recyclable inorganic phosphomolybdic acid catalyzes selective depolymerization of high-ceiling-temperature biodegradable poly(δ-valerolactone) in bulk phase, which, upon reaching suitable molecular weight, exhibits outstanding mechanical performance with a high tensile strength of ≈66.6 MPa, fracture strain of ≈904 %, and toughness of ≈308 MJ m-3 , and thus markedly outperforms commodity polyolefins, recovering its monomer in pure state and quantitative yield at only 100 °C. In sharp contrast, the uncatalyzed depolymerization not only requires a high temperature of >310 °C but is also low yielding and non-selective. Importantly, the recovered monomer can be repolymerized as is to reproduce the same polymer, thereby closing the circular loop, and the recycled catalyst can be reused repeatedly for depolymerization runs without loss of its catalytic activity and efficiency.

Abstract:High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is among the most voluminous commodity plastics, which has received increasing public scrutiny about its impact on environment and climate change. There have been many efforts to recycle HDPE chemically, though significant hurdles remain. Toward a closed-loop economy, it is considered appealing to design "HDPE-like" materials, which contain built-in degradable groups and preserve thermal and mechanical properties like HDPE. This review provides a concise overview of three major areas: HDPE recycling methods, preparation of "HDPE-like" materials, and perspective towards more sustainable polymers. Each section includes a few inspiring achievements and challenges of the past decade.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The unsuitable disposal of plastic wastes has caused serious environmental pollution, and finding a green manner to address this problem has aroused wide concern. Plastic wastes, especially polyolefin wastes, are rich in carbon and hydrogen, and chemical recycling shows distinct advantages in their conversion into olefins and realizes a closed-loop cycling of plastic wastes. Plastic wastes should be labeled before disposal. The necessity for, and methods of, pretreatment are introduced in this paper and the whole recycling process of polyolefin wastes is also summarized. As the core technology pyrolysis, including thermal, catalytic and solvolysis processes, is introduced in detail due to its potential for future development. We also briefly describe the feasible strategies of pyrolytic oil refining and life cycle assessment of the chemical recycling process. In addition, suggestions and perspectives concerning the industrial improvement of polyolefin chemical recycling are proposed.

Abstract:Chemical recycling of polymers to the corresponding monomers offers a valuable solution to address the current plastics crisis for creating an ideal and circular polymer economy. Here, we present a bimetallic synergistic depolymerization of the widely studied CO2-based polycarbonates, poly(cyclohexene carbonate)s, to epoxide monomers efficiently. The bimetallic CrIII-complex-mediated highly selective depolymerization and repolymerization was achieved via the regulation of reaction temperature, thus closing the circular loop of poly(cyclohexene carbonate)s in situ. Mechanistic investigation has revealed that the formation of epoxides undergoes a direct chain-end unzipping process. A bimetallic catalysis involving a nucleophilic attack of the metal-alkoxide species toward the methine carbon atom bound with an adjacent carbonyl that is activated by the other metal center features a lower energy barrier in DFT calculations, which promotes the epoxide extrusion.

Abstract:Abstract Ethylene/α-olefin copolymers are produced in huge scale and widely used, but their after-use disposal has caused plastic pollution problems. Their chemical inertness made chemical re/upcycling difficult. Ideally, PE materials should be made de novo to have a circular closed-loop lifecycle. However, synthesis of circular ethylene/α-olefin copolymers, including high-volume, linear low-density PE as well as high-value olefin elastomers and block copolymers, presents a particular challenge due to difficulties in introducing branches while simultaneously installing chemical recyclability and directly using industrial ethylene and α-olefin feedstocks. Here we show that coupling of industrial coordination copolymerization of ethylene and α-olefins with a designed functionalized chain-transfer agent, followed by modular assembly of the resulting AB telechelic polyolefin building blocks by polycondensation, affords a series of ester-linked PE-based copolymers. These new materials not only retain thermomechanical properties of PE-based materials but also exhibit full chemical circularity via simple transesterification and markedly enhanced adhesion to polar surfaces.

Semi-Crystalline and Amorphous Polyesters Derived from Biobased Tri-Aromatic Dicarboxylates and Containing Cleavable Acylhydrazone Units for Short-Loop Chemical Recycling

Abstract:Recycling polymers by site-specific scission into short-chain oligomers/polymers, followed by recoupling these to form the original polymer presents an energetically more favorable shorter-loop chemical recycling in comparison to recycling into monomers. Here, we present the synthesis and polymerization of tri-aromatic diesters to prepare polyesters with acylhydrazone units as weak structural links. Two diester monomers were prepared by combining methyl 5-chloromethyl-2-furoate, obtainable from 5-chloromethylfurfural, with potentially biobased hydroquinone and resorcinol, respectively. The two diesters have a central phenyl ring flanked by two furan rings, and were polymerized with 1,6-hexanediol and 1,4-butanediol, respectively, together with controlled amounts of monofunctional ethyl levulinate to form telechelic ketone-terminated polyesters. Subsequent reactions of these telechelic polyesters with adipic dihydrazide yielded the corresponding chain-extended polyesters with increased molecular weights ([η] = 0.29–0.52 dL g–1) with acylhydrazone units in the backbone. Thermogravimetric analysis showed a high thermal stability of the polyesters with thermal decomposition only above 275 °C. The polyesters containing the linear hydroquinone units were found to be semi-crystalline materials with melting points at 158 and 192 °C, respectively, while those containing the kinked resorcinol units were fully amorphous with glass transition temperatures at 35 and 44 °C, respectively. Initial investigations of the chemical recyclability of the polyesters demonstrated that acylhydrazone units could be selectively cleaved to recover the original telechelic ketone-terminated polyesters, which could again be chain-extended to obtain a recycled polymer with molecular weights and properties very similar to those of the original material.

Abstract:The cationic copolymerization of cyclic anhydride and o‐phthalaldehyde demonstrates alternating and chemical reversible characteristics, yielding novel polyesters with alternating sequence, high‐fidelity cyclic topology, closed‐loop chemical recyclability, and easy‐to‐tune structure. Polyesters with both cyclic topology and chemical recyclability are attractive. Here, the alternating copolymerization of cyclic anhydride and o‐phthalaldehyde to synthesize a series of cyclic and recyclable polyesters are reported for the first time. Besides readily available monomers, the copolymerization is carried out at 25 °C, uses common Lewis/Brønsted acids as catalysts, and achieves high yields within 1 h. The resulting polyesters possess well‐defined alternating sequences, high‐purity cyclic topology, and tunable structures using distinct two monomer sets. Of interest, the copolymerization manifests obvious chemical reversibility as revealed by kinetic and thermodynamic studies, making the unprecedented polyesters easy to recycle to their distinct two monomers in a closed loop at high temperatures. This work furnishes a facile and efficient method to synthesize cyclic polyesters with closed‐loop recyclability.

Abstract:Abstract To reduce environmental pollution and reliance on fossil resources, polyethylene terephthalate as the most consumed synthetic polyester needs to be recycled effectively. However, the existing recycling methods cannot process colored or blended polyethylene terephthalate materials for upcycling. Here we report a new efficient method for acetolysis of waste polyethylene terephthalate into terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol diacetate in acetic acid. Since acetic acid can dissolve or decompose other components such as dyes, additives, blends, etc., Terephthalic acid can be crystallized out in a high-purity form. In addition, Ethylene glycol diacetate can be hydrolyzed to ethylene glycol or directly polymerized with terephthalic acid to form polyethylene terephthalate, completing the closed-loop recycling. Life cycle assessment shows that, compared with the existing commercialized chemical recycling methods, acetolysis offers a low-carbon pathway to achieve the full upcycling of waste polyethylene terephthalate.

Abstract:The glycolysis is one of the most promising chemical ways for the disposal of waste Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) due to the relative mild conditions. However, several serious issues still remain to be solved, including complex monomer purification, elusive product components, and ambiguous depolymerized mechanism. Herein, the depolymerization-repolymerization strategy of PET with ethylene glycol (EG)/cyclohexane-1,4-dimethanol (CHDM) binary mixed alcohols was proposed to prepare the value-added Poly(ethylene glycol-co-1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol terephthalate) (PETG/PCTG). Based on the one-pot depolymerization-repolymerization process, a series of amorphous PETG/PCTG with high molecular weight (Mn > 25,000 g/mol) and glass transition temperature can be prepared. The controlled depolymerization of PET into oligomers with higher molecular weight is of great importance to obtain high molecular weight PETG copolyesters according to the hierarchical process. The depolymerization mechanism of PET with mixed EG/CHDM was deeply elucidated, in which EG depolymerizes PET chains into the short ones, and CHDM undergoes transesterification with ester group on the end group of BHET monomers and oligomers with different molecular weight to substitute the ethylene glycol terephthalate (ET) units into 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol terephthalate (CT) units. For post-consumer PET, the depolymerization-repolymerization of colorless PET bottle can form the rPETG with higher intrinsic viscosity, molecular weight, and thermal properties, superior to the PET film and colored bottles. The information in this work is of great importance for the upcycling of PET waste.

Abstract:The development of degradable and recyclable polymers is an attractive strategy to tackle the post-consumption pollution issue of commercial plastics. Cyclic-acyclic monomers metathesis polymerization (CAMMP) has been recently reported to produce degradable thermoset, thermoplastic and elastomeric polymers, and their degradability is enabled with addition of various chemicals. In this contribution, we demonstrate that the utilization of diene comonomers containing photodegradable moiety can give access to thermoset and thermoplastic materials bearing photo-degradation capabilities The copolymerization of a series easily accessible diene comonomers bearing photodegradable ortho -nitrobenzyl moieties with dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) or cyclooctene (COE) leads to the formation of photodegradable p DCPD thermosets and p COE thermoplastic polymers with mechanical properties comparable to their non-degradable counterparts. Most importantly, their photo-degradation properties can be efficiently tuned with the addition of ultraviolet absorber during in-situ polymerization.

Abstract:Polymers capable of depolymerizing back to their own monomers offer a promising solution to address the challenges in polymer sustainability. Despite significant progress has been achieved in plastics circularity, chemical recycling of thermoplastic elastomers is relatively less concerned, largely because of their intrinsic complex multicomponents. This work creates a homopolymer-based platform towards chemically recyclable but tough thermoplastic elastomers. It is enabled by a semicrystalline polymer with high molecular weight but low crystallinity, which is prepared through ring-opening metathesis polymerization of a fully biobased cyclic olefin. By shifting the ring-chain equilibrium, quantitative conversions were achieved for both forward polymerization and reverse depolymerization. This simple circular, high-performance thermoplastic elastomer platform based on biomass highlights the importance of monomer design in addressing three challenges in sustainable polymers: the feedstock renewability, depolymerization selectivity, and performance trade-offs.

Abstract:Aiming at accessing polyethylene-bearing in-chain degradable functionality, copolymerization of carbon dioxide (CO2) with ethylene has long been recognized as a significant but highly challenging transformation. Nevertheless, most trials have resulted in ethylene homopolymerization because of the endothermic property and high energy barriers of CO2 insertion during polymer chain propagation. Here we report an unprecedented tandem reaction protocol for the synthesis of polyethylenes with in-chain carbonyls from CO2 and ethylene by the combination of photocatalytic CO2 reduction and palladium-catalyzed coordination/insertion polymerization. This protocol provides an easy way to adjust the carbonyl content (from 0.13 to 12 mol %) and insertion selectivity (up to 99% isolated carbonyls) of the polyethylene copolymers, which enables the polymers to maintain the main properties of high density polyethylene and simultaneously endows them with good photodegradability. In addition, besides apolar polyethylene copolymers, polar-functionalized polyethylenes with in-chain isolated carbonyls can also be synthesized from CO2, ethylene and a polar monomer using the same protocol. We believe our present work sheds new light on the synthesis of degradable polyethylenes by employing CO2 as a green carbonyl source.

Abstract:Chemical recycling of synthetic polymers is key to our future circular plastics economy1–3. Current chemical solutions rely on either catalyst design or introducing weak bonds.4–6 The former approach doesn’t tackle the thermodynamic trap of conventional plastics, while the latter usually compromises materials performances. Despite recent advances in ring-strain engineering of lactone-based polymers allowing catalyst-enabled recyclability,1,6,7 polymer-to-monomer recycling processes under mild, waste-free, and cost-affordable conditions remain a formidable challenge. Here, we report an intrinsically recyclable polymer disequilibrated by kinetic control of bulk reconstruction mediated with dynamic bonds, enabling spontaneous polymer-to-monomer conversion by direct solid-to-solid (crystal) transition. The key feature of the system is to couple two types of dynamic chemical equilibria, i.e., noncovalent self-assembly of side-chains and dynamic covalent polymerization of mainchains. We discovered that controlling the sidechain H-bond stacking geometry could be used to spatially separate the polymerizing moieties of monomers in the solid state and bias the monomer/polymer equilibrium toward the direction of depolymerization. As a result, a semi-crystalline, Nylon-like, and easy-to-prepare polymeric material can be spontaneously recycled into crystalline monomers using a mild thermal activation process (120°C), featuring quantitative recycling yield, high monomer purity (over 90%) at low-cost while avoiding the use of any solvent or catalyst during recycling. Life-cycle assessment shows a remarkably advantageous environmental footprint of this technology compared with solvent-based chemical recycling routes. These findings offer a supramolecular solution towards cost-effective closed-loop recycling of covalent polymers.
