Abstract:We receive approximately 80% of our external environmental information through vision, making display technology an essential component of modern life. The evolution of device structures has led to the iterative development of display technology from rigid bulk to flexible films. Recently, next-generation displays have woven electroluminescent units directly into polymer composite fibres to form textile displays. Such displays are flexible and breathable, like clothing, suggesting applications such as wearables and smart textiles. In particular, they would allow users to interact with electronic devices by touching the clothing. This Perspective provides a summary of the evolution of textile displays. We then discuss recent achievements in the field, including applications of textile displays, advances in active materials, designs of interfaces between the active layer and fibre electrodes, developments in display modules, and integration of textile displays with multiple electronic functions. Finally, we highlight the potential challenges of textile displays for practical applications and suggesting future research directions in this exciting field. This Perspective highlights the design concepts, fabrication strategies and recent achievements in textile displays, including promising applications, advances in luminescent materials, design of device interfaces, development of display modules, integration of displaying systems and the remaining challenges.

Abstract:Textile displays are poised to revolutionize current electronic devices, and reshape the future of electronics and related fields such as biomedicine and soft robotics. However, they remain unavailable due to the difficulty of directly constructing electroluminescent devices onto the textile-like substrate to really display desired programmable patterns. Here, a novel textile display is developed from continuous electroluminescent fibers made by a one-step extrusion process. The resulting displaying textile is flexible, stretchable, three-dimensionally twistable, conformable to arbitrarily curved skins, and breathable, and can dynamically display a series of desired patterns, making it useful for bioinspired electronics, soft robotics, and electroluminescent skins, among other applications. It is demonstrated that these displaying textiles can also communicate with a computer and mouse brain for smart display and camouflage applications. This work may open up a new direction for the integration of wearable electroluminescent devices with the human body, providing new and promising communication platforms.

Abstract:Alternating current electroluminescent (ACEL) fibers with wearable characteristics, such as flexibility, light weight, stitchability and comfort, are emerging in textile displays for daily applications. To construct efficient ACEL fibers, a judiciously designed and low-cost electrode is also extremely important but seems to receive less attention. Inspired by fiber dyeing, we propose a method that employs non-noble metals to design fiber electrodes by constructing microconductive channels inside commercial fibers. This method relies on the window period formed by the glass transition temperature of the PAN fibers, which is sufficiently flexible to extend to mass production at a low cost (approximately US1.86/kg). The resulting ACEL fibers interwoven with a transparent fiber electrode formed a textile display with an acceptable luminescence performance of 46 cd·m−2 (160 V). Notably, a visual feedback e-textile (VFET) was constructed by integrating fiber sensors, which demonstrates the concept of wearable real-time visual monitoring and interaction. Compared with their individual counterparts, VFET has been conveniently and efficiently for visual monitoring, communication, and interaction, i.e., the visualization of physiological parameters (heartbeat, respiration, etc.) and nonverbal communications (literal or cryptographic) for special groups and specific scenes.
Autonomous Electroluminescent Textile for Visual Interaction and Environmental Warning.

Abstract:Visual interaction is a promising strategy for the externalized expression and transmission of information, having wide application prospects in wearable luminous textiles. Achieving an autonomous luminous display and dynamic light response to environmental stimuli is attractive but attracts little attention. Herein, we propose a liquid responsive structure based on alternating-current electroluminescent fibers and demonstrate conductive-liquid-bridging electroluminescent fabrics with high integration and personalized patterns. Impressively, our electroluminescent fibers and textiles could afford a sensitive response and high robustness to water, glycerol, ethanol, and sodium chloride solution. The final electroluminescent textiles show an excellent luminescence performance of 149.08 cd m-2. On the proof of concept, a rain-sensing umbrella, luminous sportswear, and liquid response glove are fabricated to demonstrate water detection, visual interaction, and environmental warning. The textile-type visualizing-responding strategy proposed in this work may open up new avenues for the application of ACEL devices in the field of visual interaction.

Abstract:Displays constitute a crucial conduit for human-machine interactions in contemporary electronics. The fusion of displays with textiles represents a highly promising domain in the realm of next-generation smart wearables. Nevertheless, the transition from rigid to textile-based displays confronts obstacles pertaining to flexible device design and precision integration techniques. This review delineates the cutting-edge developments in this ascending field, including luminous principles, typical materials, and structural design, with a focus on the seamless integration of textiles and electronic display systems. Moreover, we explore the anticipated future trajectory of textile electronic displays, accentuating the role of yarn-based light-emitting devices, and the main challenges coming from the integration method and technology for microelectronic engineering.

Abstract:Wearable display has attracted more and more attention from academia and industry due to its potential applications in entertainment and fashion, human–computer interaction, intelligent clothing, and so on. However, the fabrication of wearable displays with large size and high mechanical durability, especially on fabric, remains challenging. In this study, we proposed a fully printed method to fabricate electroluminescent display on elastic fabric. By using a high dielectric permittivity elastomeric material as the dielectric matrix of the electroluminescent composite, as well as adding barium titanate nanoparticles into the composite, the device exhibited a bright emission with a relatively low voltage. The electroluminescent devices printed on fabric were durable and could withstand high temperature, humid environment, repeated washing, and various forms of external damage. Large size devices with uniform light emission have been successfully fabricated, and the possibility of continuous mass production of large size devices has been verified. A Stretchable Alternating Current Electroluminescent Fiber

Abstract:Flexible, stretchable electroluminescent fibers are of significance to meet the escalating requirements of increasing complexity and multifunctionality of smart electronics. We report a stretchable alternating current electroluminescent (ACEL) fiber by a low-cost and all solution-processed scalable process. The ACEL fiber provides high stretchability, decent light-emitting performance, with excellent stability and nearly zero hysteresis. It can be stretched up to 80% strain. Our ACEL fiber device maintained a stable luminance for over 6000 stretch-release cycles at 50% strain. The mechanical stretchability and optical stability of our ACEL fiber device provides new possibilities towards next-generation stretchable displays, electronic textiles, advanced biomedical imaging and lighting, conformable visual readouts in arbitrary shapes, and novel health-monitoring devices.

Abstract:E-textiles represent an emerging technology aiming toward the development of fabric with augmented functionalities, enabling the integration of displays, sensors, and other electronic components into textiles. Healthcare, protective clothing, fashion, and sports are a few examples application areas of e-textiles. Light-emitting textiles can have different applications: sensing, fashion, visual communication, light therapy, etc. Light emission can be integrated with textiles in different ways: fabricating light-emitting fibers and planar light-emitting textiles or employing side-emitting polymer optical fibers (POFs) coupled with light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Different kinds of technology have been investigated: alternating current electroluminescent devices (ACELs), inorganic and organic LEDs, and light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs). The different device working principles and architectures are discussed in this review, highlighting the most relevant aspects and the possible approaches for their integration with textiles. Regarding POFs, the methodology to obtain side emissions and the critical aspects for their integration into textiles are discussed in this review. The main applications of light-emitting fabrics are illustrated, demonstrating that LEDs, alone or coupled with POFs, represent the most robust technology. On the other hand, OLEDs (Organic LEDs) are very promising for the future of light-emitting fabrics, but some issues still need to be addressed.

Abstract:An alternating current electroluminescent (ACEL) device with high brightness and excellent durability is prepared by a fully sprayed method. The eutectic gallium–indium alloy (EGaIn) bottom electrode can conform to the shape change of the device because of its intrinsic liquidity, which greatly improves the electrical robustness of the ACEL device to mechanical deformation. Textile‐based flexible alternating current electroluminescent devices have attracted extensive research interest due to their great potential in the fields of illumination and display, information interaction, smart wear, visual sensing, and trendy decoration. However, the challenge remains to easily and efficiently fabricate electroluminescent devices with high brightness and excellent durability. In this study, a fully sprayed method for fabricating electroluminescent devices on fabric is proposed. Based on the top‐emitting structure, light‐emitting e‐textiles with bright light emission are successfully prepared using highly conductive eutectic gallium–indium alloy and silver nanowires as the bottom and top electrodes, respectively, and high dielectric constant composites as the dielectric layer. Here, the brightness enhancement mechanism of high dielectric constant dielectric layers is explained for alternating current electroluminescence devices with top‐emitting structure. The devices have a brightness of up to 338.6 cd m−2 and are resistant to all forms of physical damage. This work may be a feasible path to simplify the process and reduce the cost, and may effectively promote the industrialization of wearable electroluminescent devices.

Abstract:Endowing flexible and adaptable fiber devices with light-emitting capabilities has the potential to revolutionize the current design philosophy of intelligent, wearable interactive devices. However, significant challenges remain in developing fiber devices when it comes to achieving uniform and customizable light effects while utilizing lightweight hardware. Here, we introduce a mass-produced, wearable, and interactive photochromic fiber that provides uniform multicolored light control. We designed independent waveguides inside the fiber to maintain total internal reflection of light as it traverses the fiber. The impact of excessive light leakage on the overall illuminance can be reduced by utilizing the saturable absorption effect of fluorescent materials to ensure light emission uniformity along the transmission direction. In addition, we coupled various fluorescent composite materials inside the fiber to achieve artificially controllable spectral radiation of multiple color systems in a single fiber. We prepared fibers on mass-produced kilometer-long using the thermal drawing method. The fibers can be directly integrated into daily wearable devices or clothing in various patterns and combined with other signal input components to control and display patterns as needed. This work provides a new perspective and inspiration to the existing field of fiber display interaction, paving the way for future human–machine integration.

Abstract:Fiber‐based light‐emitting devices, which can be directly integrated into daily clothes, have emerged as a next‐generation display form factor that can provide informational hyper‐connections between humans and devices. However, although various approaches have provided advanced wearability, challenges remain for visualizing information, such as high power consumption resulting from high driving voltage and low current efficiency (CE), limited brightness making information difficult to recognize, and lack of addressability for displaying information. Here, a novel fiber‐based textile display that can surmount those challenges by successfully introducing phosphorescent organic light‐emitting diodes (phOLEDs) based on a dip‐coating method and an addressable structure on cylinder‐shaped fiber is reported. The fiber phOLEDs exhibit unprecedented optoelectronic performance, including brightness, CE, and driving voltages comparable to those of conventional glass‐based OLEDs. Particularly, they show the highest CE values of 16.3, 60.7, and 16.9 cd A–1 for red, green, and blue, respectively, among results reported thus far. Also, the fiber phOLEDs with an addressable structure implementing independent pixels can be operated by the matrix‐addressable scheme. Based on unique deformability which is confirmed by flexibility tests, the performance capabilities, and addressability, letter information can be successfully visualized on daily clothes, demonstrating the potential for realizing truly wearable textile displays.

Abstract:Advances in electroluminescent threads, suitable for weaving or knitting, have opened doors for the development of light-emitting textiles, driving growth in the market for flexible and wearable displays. Although direct embroidery of these textiles with custom designs and patterns could offer substantial benefits, the rigorous demands of machine embroidery challenge the integrity of these threads. Here, we present embroiderable multicolor electroluminescent threads—in blue, green, and yellow—that are compatible with standard embroidery machines. These threads can be used to stitch decorative designs onto various consumer fabrics without compromising their wear resistance or light-emitting capabilities. Demonstrations include illuminating specific messages or designs on consumer products and delivering emergency alerts on helmet liners for physical hazards. Our research delivers a comprehensive toolkit for integrating light-emitting textiles into trendy, customized crafts tailored to the unique requirements of diverse flexible and wearable displays.

Display textiles serve to bridge human–machine interactions<a href="#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03295-8#ref-CR9">9</a>, offering, for instance, a real-time communication tool for individuals with voice or speech difficulties. However, textiles with functional, large-area displays have not yet been achieved, because it is challenging to obtain small illuminating units that are both durable and easy to assemble over a wide area. Here we report a 6-metre-long, 25-centimetre-wide display textile containing 5 × 105 electroluminescent units spaced approximately 800 micrometres apart. Weaving conductive weft and luminescent warp fibres forms micrometre-scale electroluminescent units at the weft–warp contact points. The brightness between electroluminescent units deviates by less than 8 per cent and remains stable even when the textile is bent, stretched or pressed. Our display textile is flexible and breathable and withstands repeated machine-washing, making it suitable for practical applications. We show that an integrated textile system consisting of display, keyboard and power supply can serve as a communication tool, demonstrating the system's potential within the 'internet of things' in various areas, including healthcare. Our approach unifies the fabrication and function of electronic devices with textiles, and we expect that woven-fibre materials will shape the next generation of electronics.

Abstract:Purpose – Flexible light-emitting textile display is designed with floats for electronic elements covering and electronic contacts insulation what at the same time provides an opportunity to develop aesthetic design of the display in the single piece construction of material. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Display consists of interwoven electrically conductive yarns, non-conductive yarns and SMD LEDs connected to conductive yarns. Abstract:Textile Research Journal, Ahead of Print. Conductive polymer-based electrochromic fabrics show promising applications in new intelligent displays, flexible smart wearables, and military camouflage, thanks to their flexibility, light weight, high degree of controllability, and wide range of color change. However, despite these advantages, electrochromic textiles that rely on conductive polymers face several limitations, such as discomfort during use, instability in structure, and issues with the continuous production technology of electrochromic fibers. These factors hinder their further development. To address these limitations and promote the industrialization of conductive polymer-based electrochromic fabrics, this paper provides a comprehensive analysis that covers various aspects of electrochromic devices, including device structure, color-change mechanisms, electrochromic materials, application of electrochromic textiles, and the advantages and disadvantages of commonly used conductive polymers in electrochromic fabrics. By exploring these aspects, a better understanding of the structure and performance of conductive polymer-based electrochromic fabrics can be achieved, leading to a more effective promotion of their industrialization. Moreover, progress in the research of conductive polymer-based electrochromic fabrics is systematically reviewed from the structural design perspective, both domestically and internationally. Finally, the challenges that conductive polymer-based electrochromic fabrics currently face are discussed, and their future development trends are presented.

Abstract:Textile-based light-emitting devices are attracting more and more attention because of their potential applications in smart clothing, human-computer interfaces, safety warnings, entertainment fashion, etc. However, simple and efficient manufacturing of luminescent devices on fabrics even clothing with excellent stretchability and washability remains challenging. Here, a solvent-free thermal lamination process combined with laser engraving has been proposed to fabricate electroluminescent (EL) devices on textiles. All the preprepared components, such as the bottom electrode, the EL layer, and the top transparent electrode, were thermally laminated on the surface of textiles employing thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) as the binding matrix. The stretchability, luminance, and interface adhesion of the EL devices were systematically studied, showing excellent mechanical durability at high temperature, in humid environments, withstanding repeated machine washing, and resistant to various forms of physical damage. As a demonstration of potential application, textile-based EL devices were fabricated, which could display colored and pixelated patterns as well as dynamic images. The thermal lamination technology developed in this work can potentially enable people to DIY (do it yourself) fabricate light-emitting devices on clothing using daily tools, which could facilitate the widespread use of textile-based wearable displays.

Abstract:Enabling flexible fibers with light-emitting capabilities has the potential to revolutionize the design of smart wearable interactive devices. A recent publication in Light Science & Application, an interdisciplinary team of scientists led by Prof. Yan-Qing Lu and Prof. Guangming Tao has realized a highly flexible, uniformly luminescent photochromic fiber based on a mass-produced thermal drawing method. It overcomes the shortcomings of existing commercial light-diffusing fibers, exhibiting outstanding one-dimensional linear illumination performance. The research team integrated controllable photochromic fibers into various wearable interaction interfaces, providing a novel approach and insights to enable human-computer interaction.

Abstract:The electroluminescent threads — which can emit blue, green or yellow light — consist of a coating of zinc sulfide phosphors and thermoplastic polyurethane on a conductive thread. They are stitched into the fabric together with transparent conductive threads, made of silver-nanowire-coated nylon fibre, to form pixels where they overlap. The researchers show that a variety of designs can be embroidered into a textile at a rate of 350 stitches per minute. The light-emitting pixels showed little degradation of intensity after 10,000 cycles of 20% strain and 50 machine washing cycles. To illustrate its use for wearable displays, a 6 × 3 pixels array was added to a football helmet liner, which displayed the results from an accelerometer when the helmet was subjected to different severities of mechanical impact.

Abstract:Wearable electronics are receiving increasing attention with the advances of human society and technologies. Among various types of wearable electronics, electronic fibers/textiles, which integrate the comfort and appearance of conventional fibers/textiles with the functions of electronic devices, are expected to play important roles in remote health monitoring, disease diagnosis/treatment, and human-machine interface. This article aims to review the recent advances in electronic fibers/textiles, thus providing a comprehensive guiding reference for future work. First, we review the selection of functional materials and fabrication strategies of fiber-shaped electronic devices with emphasis on the newly developed functional materials and technologies. Their applications in sensing, light emitting, energy harvest, and energy storage are discussed. Then, the fabrication strategies and applications of electronic textiles are summarized. Furthermore, the integration of multifunctional electronic textiles and their applications are summarized. Finally, we discuss the existing challenges and propose the future development of electronic fibers/textiles.
