Abstract:This paper presents a safety-enhanced eco-driving strategy for connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), which is implemented by a hierarchical and distributed framework. The driving risk field, shockwave theory, and motion planning and control method are integrated into this framework to optimize the trajectories of CAVs on a signalized arterial under mixed traffic flow, with the aim of reducing the driving risk and fuel consumption of CAVs simultaneously, while ensuring traffic efficiency. The optimization procedure is mainly composed of two parts: long-term trajectory planning based on optimal control and short-term trajectory control based on model predictive control, which makes the strategy more adaptable to the various traffic conditions. The results show that the proposed framework can effectively reduce the safety risk that vehicles are exposed to and their fuel consumption by 18%–24% and 20%–27%, respectively. Furthermore, it reveals that conventional eco-driving strategies may result in negative safety issues when only considering the impact of preceding vehicles on the eco-CAV. However, these negative impacts can be eliminated when the impacts of following vehicles on the eco-CAV are taken into account. In addition, the sensitivity analysis on the Market Penetration Rate (MPR) of CAVs and traffic demand is performed. The results show that the framework is robust and can work under various traffic conditions (including under-saturated and over-saturated ones) and different MPRs.

Abstract:Road accidents and traffic congestion are two critical problems for global transport systems. Connected vehicles (CV) and automated vehicles (AV) are among the most heavily researched and promising automotive technologies to reduce road accidents and improve road efficiency. However, both AV and CV technologies have inherent shortcomings, for example, line of sight sensing limitation of AV sensors and the dependency of high penetration rate for CVs. In this paper we present a cooperative connected intelligent vehicles (CAV) framework. It is motivated by the observation that vehicles are increasingly intelligent with various levels of autonomous functionalities. The vehicles intelligence is boosted by more sensing and computing resources. These sensor and computing resources of CAV vehicles and the transport infrastructure could be shared and exploited. With resource sharing and cooperation CAVs can have comprehensive perception of driving environments, and novel cooperative applications can be developed to improve road safety and efficiency (RSE). The key feature of the cooperative CAV system is the cooperation within and across the key players in the road transport systems and across system layers. For example, the various levels of cooperation include cooperative sensing, cooperative RSE applications and cooperation among the vehicles and among the vehicles and infrastructure. We will present the potentials that could be brought by cooperative CAV, the roadmap for research and development, the preliminary research results and open issues.

Abstract:Information-aware connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) have drawn great attention in recent years due to their potentially significant positive impacts on roadway safety and operational efficiency. In this paper, we conduct an in-depth review of three basic and key interrelated aspects of a CAV: sensing and communication technologies; human factors; and information-aware controller design. First, the different vehicular sensing and communication technologies and their protocol stacks, to provide reliable information to the information-aware CAV controller, are thoroughly discussed. Diverse human factors, such as user comfort, preferences, and reliability, to design the CAV systems for mass adaptation are also discussed. Then, the different layers of a CAV controller (route planning, driving mode execution, and driving model selection) considering human factors and information through connectivity are reviewed. In addition, the critical challenges for the sensing and communication technologies, human factors, and information-aware controller are identified to support the design of a safe and efficient CAV system while considering user acceptance and comfort. Finally, the promising future research directions of these three aspects are discussed to overcome existing challenges to realize a safe and operationally efficient CAV.

Abstract:Vehicle control is one of the most critical challenges in autonomous vehicles (AVs) and connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), and it is paramount in vehicle safety, passenger comfort, transportation efficiency, and energy saving. This survey attempts to provide a comprehensive and thorough overview of the current state of vehicle control technology, focusing on the evolution from vehicle state estimation and trajectory tracking control in AVs at the microscopic level to collaborative control in CAVs at the macroscopic level. First, this review starts with vehicle key state estimation, specifically vehicle sideslip angle, which is the most pivotal state for vehicle trajectory control, to discuss representative approaches. Then, we present symbolic vehicle trajectory tracking control approaches for AVs. On top of that, we further review the collaborative control frameworks for CAVs and corresponding applications. Finally, this survey concludes with a discussion of future research directions and the challenges. This survey aims to provide a contextualized and in-depth look at the state of the art in vehicle control for AVs and CAVs, identifying critical areas of focus and pointing out the potential areas for further exploration.

Abstract:Three basic enablers for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are wireless networking, sensing, and control. Tightly coupled with the physical process of wireless signal propagation, vehicle movement, and environment, however, CAV wireless networking, sensing, and control are subject to complex cyber-physical uncertainties. To address the challenges, we propose an integrated, cross-layer framework for taming cyber-physical uncertainties, within which we develop novel algorithms and methodologies for addressing the interdependencies between networking, sensing, control, and physical processes. To enable high-fidelity evaluation and thus the deployment and adoption of new CAV technologies, we develop a software-defined CAV infrastructure for conducting CAV experiments using vehicles in real-world traffic so that properties of V2X communication, vehicles, traffic, road, and environment are captured at high-fidelity.

Abstract:As the general development trend of the automotive industry, connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) can be used to increase transportation safety, promote mobility choices, reduce user costs, and create new job opportunities. However, with the increasing level of connectivity and automation, malicious users are able to easily implement different kinds of attacks, which threaten the security of CAVs. Hence, this paper provides a comprehensive survey on the cyber-security in the environment of CAVs with the aim of highlighting security problems and challenges. Firstly, based on the types of communication networks and attack objects, it classifies various cyber-security risks and vulnerabilities in the environment of CAVs into in-vehicle network attacks, vehicle to everything network attacks, and other attacks. Next, it regards cyber-risk as another type of attacks in the environment of CAVs. Then, it describes and analyzes up-to-date corresponding defense strategies for securing CAVs. In addition, it concludes several available cyber-security and safety standards of CAVs, which is helpful for the practical application of CAVs. Finally, several challenges and open problems are discussed for the future research.

Abstract:Recent advances in attack/anomaly detection and resilience strategies for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are reviewed from vehicle dynamics and control perspective. Compared to traditional vehicles, CAVs are featured in the increasing number of perception sensors, advanced intra-vehicle communication technologies, capabilities of driving automation and connectivity between single vehicles. These features bring about safety issues which are not encountered in traditional vehicle systems. One main type of these issues is the attack or anomaly launched onto the perception sensors and the communication channels. With such a consideration, this survey summarizes and reviews the existing results on attack/anomaly detection and resilience of CAVs in control frameworks. This paper reviews the results according to the positions at which the attacks/anomalies occur. These positions are divided into three categories, namely, intra-vehicle communication network, perception sensors and inter-vehicle communication network. From this perspective, the recent attack/anomaly detection and resilience results are reviewed according to different positions attacked. After reviewing existing results, some potential research directions and challenges are identified.

Abstract:CAVs, or connected and autonomous vehicles, have the potential to revolutionize the transportation system by making vehicle driving safer, more comfortable, and more efficient. As a result, there is the question of ensuring that CAVs and conventional vehicles can coexist insightfully. Our goal in this research is to understand better how CAVs can coexist with non-autonomous vehicles, i.e., human-driven vehicles (HVs) on city streets. To use as little energy as possible while maintaining high levels of safety, we apply the optimal control strategy and study the problems when vehicles in mixed traffic flow attempt to merge at on-ramp areas. To verify this approach, we conduct simulations with Python and SUMO. The effect of CAVs on fuel consumption is investigated under different penetration rates and traffic flow volumes. Energy efficiency gains become more significant as CAV penetration increases, whereas traffic volume decreases its significance.

Abstract:Accurately discovering hazards and issuing appropriate warnings to drivers in advance or performing autonomous control is the core of the Collision Avoidance (CA) system used to solve traffic safety problems. More comprehensive environmental awareness, diversified communication technologies, and autonomous control can make the CA system more accurate and effective, thereby improving driving safety. In addition, the assistance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology can make the CA system adapt to the environment and facilitate fast and accurate decisions. Considering the current lack of a thorough survey of driving safety with sensing, vehicular communications, and AI-based collision avoidance, in this paper, we survey existing researches for state-of-the-art data-driven CA techniques. Firstly, we discuss the major steps of CA and key research issues. For each step, we review the existing enabling techniques and research methods for CA in detail, including sensing and vehicular communication for safe driving, as well as CA algorithm design. Particularly, we present a comparison between the most common AI algorithms for different functions in the CA system. Testbeds and projects for CA are summarized next. Finally, several open challenges and future research directions are also outlined.

The development of the CAVH system is very important for China. Abstract:Autonomous vehicles offer many benefits to driving, including safety, comfort, and efficiency. The significant extended benefit of autonomy in traffic comes from the connectivity through communications among vehicles, vehicle and infrastructure, and vehicle and other road users (also known as V2V, V2I, and V2X.) Connected Autonomous Vehicles or CAVs connectivity allows automated trajectories, plans, and coordinated speed adaptations that are safer, enhance traffic throughput and reduce energy consumption. CAVs will have more comprehensive situational awareness in the vehicle's vicinity for safety assurance. Driving tasks like lane changing, merging, navigating automated intersections, and various collision avoidance scenarios benefit significantly from the connectivity and the enhanced collective perception of the surrounding areas. Appropriate algorithms based on CAVs' connectivity data can also improve driving task decision-making and navigation plans within the traffic. This talk presents a few examples of advanced methods and algorithms that demonstrate various benefits and challenges of CAVS through simulation and laboratory experiments. It serves as an overview referring to reference co-authored articles by the presenter.

Abstract:Cyber-physical systems (CPS) have become the cutting-edge technology for the next generation of industrial applications, and are rapidly developing and inspiring numerous application areas. This article presents an optimal forward-looking distributed CPS application for the safety-following driving control of connected and automated vehicles (CAV) in the intelligent transportation. The relevant components and required technologies of the CPS concept in intelligent transportation systems are introduced firstly. Under this framework, each CAV is considered as an independent CPS. In the safe driving of vehicles, historical data is used to build vehicle behavior prediction models and dynamic driving system models. At the same time, a new range strategy considering the probability of merging behavior is proposed and applied to the CAV's safe cruise control. The results show that through the application framework of CPS, the proposed range strategy can improve the following safety of the vehicle.

Abstract:Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) have the potential to address the safety, mobility and sustainability issues of our current transportation systems. Cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC), for example, is one promising technology to allow CAVs to be driven in a cooperative manner and introduces system-wide benefits. In this paper, we review the progress achieved by researchers worldwide regarding different aspects of CACC systems. Literature of CACC system architectures are reviewed, which explain how this system works from a higher level. Different control methodologies and their related issues are reviewed to introduce CACC systems from a lower level. Applications of CACC technology are demonstrated with detailed literature, which draw an overall landscape of CACC, point out current opportunities and challenges, and anticipate its development in the near future.

Abstract:With the development of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), digital twin (DT) technology is becoming increasingly widespread in the application of connected automated vehicles (CAV) to enhance driving safety. However, when DT systems are used for driving safety decisions through virtual control of reality and virtual reflection of reality, decision errors may occur, which can be fatal for the driving safety of CAVs. The main reasons are attributed to three aspects: the accuracy, the communication delay, and the safety control of the DT system. In this paper, we study to improve the accuracy and safety of the DT system decisions with communication delay. Firstly, we considered powertrain factors to construct a high-precision and high-fidelity DT system. We use the goodness-of-fit functions (GoFs) and measure-of-performances (MoPs) to fit the vehicle’s model and carry out error measurements in the DT system. Secondly, we analyze the stability of the DT system using plant stability and string stability under time delay. The effective range of time delay ensures the accuracy and stability of the DT system, and provides a safety constraint for the design of the CAV’s controller. Finally, we propose a DT-assisted robust safety-critical traffic control (RSTC) strategy based on control barrier functions (CBFs). This strategy ensures the driving safety of CAVs with preceding and following vehicles while maintaining traffic stability. The theoretical analysis and experimental results present that the proposed scheme can effectively avoid conflicts and crash risks to ensure driving safety.
