Abstract:East Asia is one of the few regions in the world where a large number of human fossils have been unearthed. The continuity of hominid fossils in East Asia, particularly in China has been presented as strong evidence supporting an independent origin of modern humans in this area. To search for such evidence of a possible independent origin of modern humans in China, a total of 9988 male individuals were sampled across China. Three Y-chromosome biallelic markers (M89, M130 and YAP), which were located at the non-recombinant region of Y-chromosome, were typed among the samples. Our result showed that all the individuals carry a mutation at one of the three loci. The three mutations (M89T, M130T, YAP + ) coalesce to another mutation (M168T), which was originally derived from Africa about 31000 to 79000 years ago. In other words, all Y-chromosome samples from China, with no exception, were originally derived from a lineage of African origin. Hence, we conclude that even a very minor contribution of in situ hominid origin in China cannot be supported by the Y-chromosome evidence.
Deduction of the Age of the Dali Hominin Fossil Based on Regional Geomorphic-Sedimentary Evolution

Abstract:Dali hominin, an archaic type of early Homo sapiens, is of great significance to the understanding of the evolutionary processes of Homo sapiens in China. However, its age remains debatable. There developed a series of lacustrine and alluvial terraces both in the northeastern part of the Weihe Basin and in the stretch of the Luo River near the Dali hominin site, and the Dali hominin cranium fossil was yielded from the basal alluvium of T-3 of the Luo River. The paper first adopted the loess-paleosol sequence dating method to determine the age of each terrace, in order to delineate the history of the regional paleolake regression-transgression cycles. Then, in combination with the characteristics of the geomorphic-sedimentary body bearing the Dali hominin fossil, the paper verified which paleolake regression-transgression cycle is represented by the fossil-bearing deposits. Last, based on grain-size and pollen evidences from this geomorphic -sedimentary body, the paper deduced the age of the cranium-bearing bed. The results show that there occurred several paleolake regressions and river down-cutting events when S-14, L-9, L-6, S-2, L-2 and L-1SS developed or accumulated respectively, and that the alluvium bearing the cranium fossil was deposited after the paleolake regression in the late stage of L-6 deposition. This regression caused parts of the paleolake bed to emerge subaerially and the Luo River subsequently flowed over it, eroding the lacustrine sediment and depositing alluvium. The deposition of this alluvium was therefore probably synchronous with the development of S-5, with a mean age of similar to 550 ka. By comparison with Homo heidelbergensis at Mauer (Germany) in both the living paleoenvironment and the age, the paper found that both hominin may be penecontemporaneous. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The 2007 discovery of fragmentary human remains (two molars and an anterior mandible) at Zhirendong (Zhiren Cave) in South China provides insight in the processes involved in the establishment of modern humans in eastern Eurasia. The human remains are securely dated by U-series on overlying flowstones and a rich associated faunal sample to the initial Late Pleistocene, >100 kya. As such, they are the oldest modern human fossils in East Asia and predate by >60,000 y the oldest previously known modern human remains in the region. The Zhiren 3 mandible in particular presents derived modern human anterior symphyseal morphology, with a projecting tuber symphyseos, distinct mental fossae, modest lateral tubercles, and a vertical symphysis; it is separate from any known late archaic human mandible. However, it also exhibits a lingual symphyseal morphology and corpus robustness that place it close to later Pleistocene archaic humans. The age and morphology of the Zhiren Cave human remains support a modern human emergence scenario for East Asia involving dispersal with assimilation or populational continuity with gene flow. It also places the Late Pleistocene Asian emergence of modern humans in a pre-Upper Paleolithic context and raises issues concerning the long-term Late Pleistocene coexistence of late archaic and early modern humans across Eurasia.

Abstract:Abstract The emergence of Homo sapiens in Eastern Asia is a topic of significant research interest. However, well-preserved human fossils in secure, dateable contexts in this region are extremely rare, and often the subject of intense debate owing to stratigraphic and geochronological problems. Tongtianyan cave, in Liujiang District of Liuzhou City, southern China is one of the most important fossils finds of H. sapiens , though its age has been debated, with chronometric dates ranging from the late Middle Pleistocene to the early Late Pleistocene. Here we provide new age estimates and revised provenience information for the Liujiang human fossils, which represent one of the most complete fossil skeletons of H. sapiens in China. U-series dating on the human fossils and radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating on the fossil-bearing sediments provided ages ranging from ~33,000 to 23,000 years ago (ka). The revised age estimates correspond with the dates of other human fossils in northern China, at Tianyuan Cave (~40.8–38.1 ka) and Zhoukoudian Upper Cave (39.0–36.3 ka), indicating the geographically widespread presence of H. sapiens across Eastern Asia in the Late Pleistocene, which is significant for better understanding human dispersals and adaptations in the region.

Abstract:Fossil records indicate orangutan-like hominoids have been widely distributed in south China during Pleistocene, although currently only surviving in the tropical forests of Kalimantan and Sumatra in Indonesia. This paper describes the recently discovered hominoid fossil teeth from human site of Mulanshan cave in Chongzuo of Guangxi, whose geological age is the Late Pleistocene, about 11000 yeas age based on associated mammal fauna and U-series dating. Compared with those of modern and subfossil orangutans from Indonesia, other fossil great apes from China, the hominoid teeth from Mulanshan cave are orangutan-like, but show somehow different from Indonesia’s orangutans, the average sizes of cheek teeth larger and occlusal enamel wrinkles less and simpler. They are classified temporarily as the subspecies of Pongo pygmaeus weidenreichi. Concerning the variations of morphological features and dental sizes of orangutan-like teeth from southern China and neighboring northern Vietnam, different subspecies or species or genus possibly, but the key evidence is necessary to be identified.

Abstract:To test the hypotheses of modern human origin in East Asia, we sampled 12,127 male individuals from 163 populations and typed for three Y chromosome biallelic markers (YAP, M89, and M130). All the individuals carried a mutation at one of the three sites. These three mutations (YAP+, M89T, and M130T) coalesce to another mutation (M168T), which originated in Africa about 35,000 to 89,000 years ago. Therefore, the data do not support even a minimal in situ hominid contribution in the origin of anatomically modern humans in East Asia.

Abstract:Significance Genetic studies show the founders of all living non-African populations expanded from Africa ca. 65 to 45 ka. This “late dispersal” model has been challenged by the discovery of isolated AMHs at caves in southern China suggested as early as ca. 120 ka. We assessed the age of early AMH fossils from five caves in this region using ancient DNA analysis and a multimethod geological dating strategy. We found they were much younger than previously suggested, with some remains dating to the Holocene owing to the complex depositional history at these subtropical caves. Current evidence shows AMHs settled southern China within the timeframe set by molecular data of less than ca. 50 to 45 ka and no earlier.

Abstract:One of the most hotly debated and frontal issues in paleoanthropology focuses on the origins of modern humans. Recently, an incomplete hominin mandible with a distinctly weaker mental protuberance than modern human and a great variety of coexisting fossil mammals were unearthed from the Homo sapiens Cave of Mulan Mountain, Chongzuo, Guangxi. The mammalian fauna from the Homo sapiens Cave characterized by the combination of Elephas kiangnanensis, first occurring Elephas maixmus, and Megatapirus augustus, and strikingly different from the Early Pleistocene Gigantopithecus fauna and the Middle Pleistocene Ailuropoda-Stogodon fauna of South China could be regarded as an early representive of the typical Asian elephant fauna. Faunal analysis, biostratigraphic correlation, and, most importantly, U-series dating all consistently support an estimate of ca. 110 ka for the age of the fossil Homo sapiens and coexisting mammalian fauna, that is, the early Late Pleistocene. The fauna is mainly made up of tropical-subtropical elements, but grassland elements have a much greater variety than forest elements, which probably indicates a drier climate at that time. This discovery of early Homo sapiens at the Mulan Mountain will play a significant role in the study of the origin and its environmental background of modern humans.

Abstract:Hypotheses concerning the origins of modern humans have been intensively debated, and two competing models, the recent “Out-of-Africa” and “Multiregional Evolution” paradigms, have dominated research and discussions for decades. Evidence from China has played a fundamental role in this debate: regional continuity and replacement by populations in-migrated from Africa have both been suggested and supported mainly by paleoanthropologists and geneticists, respectively. As more evidence has accumulated, new results obtained, and more scholars from various disciplines become involved, supporters of the recent “Out-of-Africa” model agree more or less with the “Multiregional Evolution” model regarding the complex history of modern humans and their interbreeding with other archaic populations (e.g., Neandertals). Recent discoveries of new human fossils, Paleolithic archaeological materials, and ancient DNA evidence in China have yielded a large body of information regarding the formation and development of modern humans in this region. However, controversies continue, including that most molecular biologists insist on the replacement of archaic populations by modern humans dispersed from Africa, while most paleoanthropologists and archaeologists propose an enhanced “Continuity with Hybridization” model. In this paper, we compile new results and progress in China and present the current debates and issues on the origins of modern humans. Finally, we offer several suggestions for future studies.

Abstract:The human remains recovered from "Grotte superieure de Zhoukoudian" are the best-preserved Late Pleistocene human fossils in East Asia. For decades, as the representative of the Late Pleistocene human in East Asia, the Upper Cave skulls have been playing important role in the research of origins of modern Mongoloids and American Indians. With the advance of the origin and evolution of modem humans, more attention has been paid to the details and the mechanisms for the late Pleistocene human evolution and the formation of modern human populations. Both the origin and diversification of modem humans have been stressed. Some studies further trigger the debaters on the Upper Cave Man concerning its evolutionary level and its role in the formation of modern human populations in East Asia. To further explore these problems, we examined and compared 12 non-metric features on the 3 Late Pleistocene Upper Cave skulls and 162 Holocene individuals earthed from two archaeological sites of North China (Longxian and Yanqing). Our results indicate that 8 on the 12 features have different expression patterns between Upper Cave Man and recent Chinese leading the authors to believe that more primitive expressions appeared on the Upper Cave Man than on recent Chinese Populations. A New Chronological Framework for Chuandong Cave and Its Implications for the Appearance of Modern Humans in Southern China.

Abstract:Chuandong Cave is an important Late Paleolithic site because it documents the early appearance of bone tools in southern China. We used the single-aliquot regenerative-dose protocol for optically stimulated luminescence dating to improve the precision of the chronology for the Chuandong Cave sedimentary sequence. The age of each layer was determined using a Bayesian modeling approach which combined optically stimulated luminescence ages with published AMS C-14 dates. The results showed that Layer 10 began accumulating since 56 +/- 14 ka and provides the upper age limit for all artifacts from the sequence. Bone awl tools from Layer 8, the earliest grinding bone tools in this site, were recovered within sediments between 40 +/- 7 ka and 30 +/- 4 ka. Layer 8 also indicates the appearance of modern humans in the Chuandong Cave sequence. Layers 4-2, ranging from 15 +/- 3 ka until 11 +/- 1 ka and including the Younger Dryas period, contain a few bone awls and an eyed bone needle. The shift from bone awls to eyed bone needles in the Chuandong Cave sequence indicates that modern humans adapted to the changing climate of southern China. We conclude that modern human behavior in bone tools appeared in southern China as early as 40 +/- 7 ka, became more sophisticated during the Last Glacial Maximum, and spread more widely across southern China during the Younger Dryas. Abstract:Past human genetic diversity and migration between southern China and Southeast Asia have not been well characterized, in part due to poor preservation of ancient DNA in hot and humid regions. We sequenced 31 ancient genomes from southern China (Guangxi and Fujian), including two ∼12,000- to 10,000-year-old individuals representing the oldest humans sequenced from southern China. We discovered a deeply diverged East Asian ancestry in the Guangxi region that persisted until at least 6,000 years ago. We found that ∼9,000- to 6,000-year-old Guangxi populations were a mixture of local ancestry, southern ancestry previously sampled in Fujian, and deep Asian ancestry related to Southeast Asian Hòabìnhian hunter-gatherers, showing broad admixture in the region predating the appearance of farming. Historical Guangxi populations dating to ∼1,500 to 500 years ago are closely related to Tai-Kadai and Hmong-Mien speakers. Our results show heavy interactions among three distinct ancestries at the crossroads of East and Southeast Asia.

However, genetic studies conducted in the past ten years, especially using Y chromosomes, have provided unequivocal evidence for an African origin of East Asian populations. The genetic signatures present in diverse East Asian populations mark the footsteps of prehistoric migrations that occurred tens of thousands of years ago.

For decades, as the representative of the late Pleistocene human in east Asia, the Upper Cave skulls have played an important role in research on the origins of modern Mongoloids and American Indians. Recently, more attention has been paid to the details and mechanisms for late Pleistocene human evolution and the formation of modern human populations. Both the origin and diversification of modern humans have been stressed in research. Some studies further the debates on the evolutionary position of Upper Cave Man and this group's role in the formation of modern human populations in east Asia. To further explore these problems, we examined and compared 12 non-metric features on three Upper Cave skulls and modern Chinese unearthed from two archaeological sites in North China. Our results indicate that 8 features are expressed differently between Upper Cave Man and modern Chinese. We believe that more primitive characteristics define Upper Cave Man when compared to modern Chinese populations. These findings and some problems on late Pleistocene human evolution including intra-group variation and the standard for modern human populations, are discussed.

Abstract:One of the hottest scientific issues in paleoanthropology currently focuses on the origin of modern humans and much more attention is paid to the fossil hominin records of the early Late Pleistocene because it is a critical time for the radiations of modern humans.Recently,the fragmentary human remains (an anterior mandible and two molars) and abundant coexisting fossil mammals were unearthed from the Zhiren Cave (22°17′13.6″N,107°30′45.1″E) of Mulan Mountain,Chongzuo,Guangxi of Southern China.The human remains are securely dated by U-series on overlying flowstones and associated faunal analysis to the initial Late Pleistocene,ca.110ka.As such,they are the oldest modern human fossils in East Asia and predate by ＞60,000 years the oldest previously known modern human remains in the region.A large variety and amount of mammalian fossils were collected from the Zhiren Cave after two times of trial and systematic excavations.The Zhiren fauna is composed of 55 species (21 large mammals and 34 small mammals).In this study the proboscidean remains from this site are systematically described as Elephas kiangnanensis and first occurring Elephas maixmus based on the dental morphology,such as plate number,lamellar frequency and enamel thickness.Recent studies reveal that three turnovers occurred in the proboscidean radiations during Quaternary in Southern China.The genus,Sinomastodon was once prevalent during the Early Pleistocene,and became one of the typical members of the Gigantopithecus-Sinomastodon fauna.It became extinct at the end of the Early Pleistocene,and was replaced by Stegodon orientalis,a main member of the Ailuropoda-Stegodon fauna (s.s.) during the Middle Pleistocene.The appearance of Elaphas kiangnanensis until the late Middle Pleistocene changed the features of the Ailuropoda-Stegodon fauna,and Elaphas maximus gradually became dominant during the Late Pleistocene.Due to the absence of the typical Early or Middle Pleistocene members of Southern China,such as Sinomastodon and Stegodon,the Zhiren fauna bears the transitional characteristics of the typical Middle Pleistocene Ailuropoda-Stegodon fauna (s.s.) and Late Pleistocene Asian elephant fauna.The Zhiren fauna lacks the typical members of forest type of Southern China,such as Ailuropoda,Stegodon and Rhizomys,and probably indicates a biological event from Elephas kiangnanensis to Elephas maixmus,which is possibly related to origin of early modern human caused by climate transition.Both shrub-dwelling and grass-dwelling animal species are comparatively numerous from Zhiren fauna,indicating the forest was shrinking while the shrub and grassland were expanding at that time.This was probably the result of comparatively drier climate at that time.

Abstract:Martinón-Torres et al. (1) present a flawed reinterpretation of our work which demands correction. FY-HT-1 and FY-HT-2 were collected from the section walls of the 2011–2013 excavations; details of provenience were provided (2). All of the lingual and much of the occlusal and mesial surfaces of FY-HT-2's enamel is missing (Fig. 1 A ). Therefore, reconstructions of "deer-like" wear (1) simply bear no resemblance to the preservational reality of the tooth. Also disconcerting is their comparison of FY-HT-2 with images of various deer incisors (Fig. 1 A and ref. 1). Confirmation bias aside, a proper comparison would have indicated affinities to recent humans (Fig. 1 A ), as confirmed by DNA analyses (2). Regarding FY-HT-1, its preservation is visually indistinct from existing samples (see ref. 3). But within-sample variation is clear, and expected, given nonuniform taphonomic processes within the context of a dynamic sedimentary history, as we have demonstrated at Fuyan Cave (2).Fig. 1. Abstract:Hominins with morphology similar to present-day humans appear in the fossil record across Eurasia between 40,000 and 50,000 y ago. The genetic relationships between these early modern humans and present-day human populations have not been established. We have extracted DNA from a 40,000-y-old anatomically modern human from Tianyuan Cave outside Beijing, China. Using a highly scalable hybridization enrichment strategy, we determined the DNA sequences of the mitochondrial genome, the entire nonrepetitive portion of chromosome 21 (∼30 Mbp), and over 3,000 polymorphic sites across the nuclear genome of this individual. The nuclear DNA sequences determined from this early modern human reveal that the Tianyuan individual derived from a population that was ancestral to many present-day Asians and Native Americans but postdated the divergence of Asians from Europeans. They also show that this individual carried proportions of DNA variants derived from archaic humans similar to present-day people in mainland Asia.

Abstract:Les restes humains découverts dans le site de la grotte supérieure de Zhoukoudian sont les plus nombreux et les mieux conservés des hominidés fossiles du Pléistocène récent d'Asie de l'Est. À ce titre, ils ont joué depuis des années un rôle important dans la recherche des origines des Mongoloïdes actuels et des Indiens d'Amérique. Plus récemment, ce sont les notions de mécanismes d'apparition et d'évolution des hommes anatomiquement modernes ainsi que leur variabilité morphologique qui ont été mises en avant. Des études ont élargi le débat concernant le stade évolutif de l'homme de la grotte supérieure de Zhoukoudian et son rôle dans l'émergence des populations actuelles en Asie de l'Est. Pour contribuer à cette discussion, nous avons étudié et comparé 12 caractères non métriques sur les trois crânes de la grotte supérieure de Zhoukoudian et les 162 individus provenant de deux sites archéologiques du nord de la Chine (Longxian et Yanqing). Nos résultats indiquent que 8 des 12 caractères s'expriment différemment chez ces hominidés fossiles et holocènes, ce qui amène les auteurs à considérer que les crânes de la grotte supérieure de Zhoukoudian présentent des caractères plus primitifs que ceux des populations chinoises récentes. Sur la base de ces résultats, certains problèmes concernant l'évolution de l'homme au Pléistocène récent tels que celui de la variabilité intragroupe et du référentiel actuel utilisé pour la comparaison sont discutés.
Morphological and morphometric analyses of a late Middle Pleistocene hominin mandible from Hualongdong, China

Abstract:Excavations in Hualongdong (HLD), East China, have yielded abundant hominin fossils dated to 300 ka. There is a nearly complete mandible that fits well with a partial cranium, and together they compose the skull labeled as HLD 6. Thus far, detailed morphological description and comparisons of the mandible have not been conducted. Here we present a comprehensive morphological, metric, and geometric morphometric assessment of this mandible and compare it with both adult and immature specimens of Pleistocene hominins and recent modern humans. Results indicate that the HLD 6 mandible exhibits a mosaic morphological pattern characterized by a robust corpus and relatively gracile symphysis and ramus. The moderately developed mental trigone and a clear anterior mandibular incurvation of the HLD 6 mandible are reminiscent of Late Pleistocene hominin and recent modern human morphology. However, the weak expression of all these features indicates that this mandible does not possess a true chin. Moreover, a suite of archaic features that resemble those of Middle Pleistocene hominins includes pronounced alveolar planum, superior transverse torus, thick corpus, a pronounced endocondyloid crest, and a well-developed medial pterygoid tubercle. The geometric morphometric analysis further confirms the mosaic pattern of the HLD 6 mandible. The combination of both archaic and modern human features identified in the HLD 6 mandible is unexpected, given its late Middle Pleistocene age and differs from approximately contemporaneous Homo members such as Xujiayao, Penghu, and Xiahe. This mosaic pattern has never been recorded in late Middle Pleistocene hominin fossil assemblages in East Asia. The HLD 6 mandible provides further support for the high morphological diversity during late Middle Pleistocene hominin evolution. With these findings, it is possible that modern human morphologies are present as early as 300 ka and earlier than the emergence of modern humans in East Asia.
