Abstract:View Video Presentation: https://doi.org/10.2514/6.2023-1557.vid The tailless flying wing and blended wing-body aircraft have historically emerged in the pursuit of improved aerodynamics and flight performance. Despite their many advantages, these designs are highly vulnerable to lateral-directional instabilities such as wing rock. Wing rock refers to uncontrolled roll oscillations that occur in many aircraft at low subsonic and transonic speeds. The knowledge of wing rock detection and characteristics of tailless blended wing-body aircraft is still being determined. This research investigates the wing rock characteristics of a generic 53° sweep tailless blended wing-body aircraft, SACCON, in single roll motion. The analysis involves solving unsteady Reynolds-Averaged-Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations wherein the dynamic forced roll, and dynamic free roll oscillation techniques are applied, compared, and validated. In addition, the flow mechanisms governing wing rock are deciphered using a Liutex-based vortex identification method. The results reveal the appearance of high amplitude roll oscillations with strong nonzero mean angles in the nonlinear flight regime. The onset is linked to the loss of dynamic roll stability, asymmetrical flow field, and the interaction and breakdown of multiple vortices. In addition, inertia's influence on the rocking characteristics is also observed. This research will aid aircraft designers in the design phase to model instabilities and avoid high production costs and time.
