Abstract:Traditional methods of enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose to cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are limited due to the low enzymatic efficiency and large amount of waste liquid. The purpose of this study is to improve the yield and production efficiency of CNCs by enzymatic hydrolysis. A one-step mechano-enzymatic hydrolysis method was developed by utilizing the synergy of wet grinding and enzymatic hydrolysis reaction to efficiently prepare CNCs. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the maximum CNCs yield of 49.3% was achieved with higher thermal stability and crystallinity index of 76.7%. Mechano-enzymatic hydrolysis followed the first order pseudo-kinetics, and fractal kinetics demonstrated that mechanical force of rotation speed affected the fractal dimensions and binding ability between substrate and enzyme. This study provides an alternative method to prepare CNCs, which can significantly avoid the use of bulk water, improve the production efficiency of CNCs and thus lower the production cost.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) received great attention in various fields, because of their high efficacy, high aspect ratio, low density, renewability and non-toxicity which make them ideal candidates. Here, various properties and applications especially, thermal, mechanical, adhesives, coatings etc., to introduce CNCs, a hydrophilic and colloidally stable, rigid rod-shaped bio-based nanomaterial with high strength and high surface area. CNCs enhance properties of different compounds under different conditions. The research in the last decade reveals that couple of years CNCs possesses high nature, than any other kind of compound, widely used in industrial and other products, as well as for human benefits. Over the past decade, CNCs is an abundant natural nanomaterial with great potential, has attracted many researches towards its use. Dispersing in polar solvent, they assemble to form multiphase or higher order structures yielding desirable optical and structural properties. The present review summarizes the recent achievements in the development of CNCs templating, highlights considerable progress has been achieved in addressing these multidimensional properties and potential use of CNCs in a wide range of high-tech applications in different fields.
Real-time Detection of the Morphological Change in Cellulose by a Nanomechanical Sensor.

Abstract:Up to now, experimental limitations have prevented researchers from achieving the molecular-level understanding for the initial steps of the enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose, where cellulase breaks down the crystal structure on the surface region of cellulose and exposes cellulose chains for the subsequent hydrolysis by cellulase. Because one of these non-hydrolytic enzymatic steps could be the rate-limiting step for the entire enzymatic hydrolysis of crystalline cellulose by cellulase, being able to analyze and understand these steps is instrumental in uncovering novel leads for improving the efficiency of cellulase. In this communication, we report an innovative application of the microcantilever technique for a real-time assessment of the morphological change of cellulose induced by a treatment of sodium chloride. This sensitive nanomechanical approach to define changes in surface structure of cellulose has the potential to permit a real-time assessment of the effect of the non-hydrolytic activities of cellulase on cellulose and thereby to provide a comprehensive understanding of the initial steps of the enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose.
Preparation of nanocellulose in high yield via chemi-mechanical synergy

Abstract:Nanocellulose has gained increasing attention due to its excellent properties and wide application prospect. However, fast and low-waste preparation of nanocellulose is still challenging. Here, a time-saving and low-cost chemi-mechanical method was proposed to prepare cellulose nanocrystals (D-CNCs) and cellulose nanofibers (D-CNFs) by dilute sulfuric acid hydrolysis and the homogenization of the un-hydrolyzed cellulose residues, respectively. After hydrolyzed by 0.3 wt% sulfuric acid at 160 °C for 2 h, the diameter and length distribution of the obtained D-CNCs were 16 ∼ 45 nm and 150 ∼ 600 nm, respectively. The yield of D-CNCs and D-CNFs reached to 15.78 % and 69.11 %. The thermostability of D-CNCs was more superior to CNCs manufactured by 64 wt% sulfuric acid. In conclusion, this approach offers a promising strategy for high yield of nanocellulose due to its easy operation and low pollution.

Abstract:We have studied the advances made in chemical modification of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and their corresponding applications. Different synthetic methods such as esterification and etherification, cross-linking and grafting techniques parameters, etc., are used in CNCs formation. As CNCs are well studied for their renewable purposes like oxidation, grafting, copolymerization reaction, etc. Their biodegradability is of great advantage as it can easily be modified with other related functional groups giving high stiffness, strength, low density and long life to metals and other materials. Cellulose polymer is mostly used due to its neutrality and its wide applications in furniture, packaging, textile, food medical products, etc. Mankind has found a great deal of benefit from cellulose owing to its many applications over a period of hundreds of years. This review presents a detailed account of pronounced effect of CNCs, revealed during their numerous applications and their potential use in wide ranging fields. The recent research reveals multidimensional properties and great advancements of CNCs made at an industrial level. CNCs also exhibit high efficiency in all application areas, described in detail here.
Preparation and Characterization of Nanofibrillated Cellulose from Bamboo Fiber Via Ultrasonication Assisted by Repulsive Effect

Abstract:Nanofibrillated celluloses (NFCs) have recently drawn much attention because of their exceptional physicochemical properties. However, the existing preparation procedures either produce low yields or severely degrade the cellulose and, moreover, are not energy efficient. The purpose of this study was to develop a novel process using ultrasonic homogenization to isolate fibrils from bamboo fiber (BF) with the assistance of negatively charged entities. The obtained samples were characterized by the degree of substitution (DS) of carboxymethyl, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that an NFC yield could be obtained above 70% through this route. The enzyme hydrolysis could enhance the surface charge of the fiber, and mechanical activation facilitates an increase in the DS. The disintegrating efficiency of the cellulose fibrils significantly depended on the input power of ultrasonication and the DS. FT-IR spectra confirmed the occurrence of the carboxymethylation reaction based on the appearance of the characteristic signal for the carboxyl group. From XRD analysis, it was observed that the presence of the carboxyl groups makes the isolation more efficient attributed to the ionic repulsion between the carboxylate groups of the cellulose chains.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) is one of the outstanding nano-material. So far, much researcher nowadays has been developed their applications. It acquires several properties, particular in bio-degradability and low cost with chemical stability. These properties make CNCs a promising resource to replace fossil resources for the production of industrial materials, chemicals and biofuels. CNCs based materials have attracted much attention during the past few years and are widely used in biomedical materials, pharmaceutical industry, the auxiliary catalytic matrix and nanomedicine were discussed here. The CNCs industry is booming due to many possibilities of drug supply. Successful delivery is influenced by a number of factors, including the selection of suitable materials for research and development. It is used in the transdermal preparations to improve clinical results. It is used as an interdisciplinary approach that takes into accounts, opportunities and potential benefits of developing different management strategies in nature. It has attracted wide attention because of its unique nature, such as renewable, non-toxic, high surface area and the utilization of hydroxyl groups for its functionalization potential to develop various products and replace traditional petrochemical and non-biodegradable materials. This overview summarizes the latest development of model modeling for CNCs. Considerable progress has been made in handling these functions and potentially using of CNCs in different high-tech applications in different areas. This all are highlighted here.
High Yield Synthesis of Cellulose Nanocrystals From Avicel by Mechano‐Enzymatic Approach

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (N_CNCs) are synthesized in high yield from Avicel by a mild mechano‐enzymatic approach. The mechanic pretreatment with a ball miller allows to enhance the endoglucanase hydrolysis efficiency providing nanocrystals with high crystallinity and homogeneous morphology. This work offers good technological solutions for the preparation of CNCs in high yield. Cellulose nanocrystals are an important class of bio‐based crystalline nanostructures, finding application in several technological fields, including paper and textile coating, biocomposite engineering, biocatalysts immobilization, etc. This study explores enzymatic hydrolysis of Avicel, using endoglucanase from Aspergillus niger, to find an environmentally friendly method to extract cellulose nanocrystals from cellulose sources. Enzymatic hydrolysis has the advantage of reduced energy consumption and higher environmental friendliness compared to acid hydrolysis. In this work, we report for the first time very high nanocrystals yield by combining mechanical pretreatment of the cellulose starting material with a ball miller and endoglucanase hydrolysis, as a result of an extensive optimization of reaction conditions. In particular, a ball milling pretreatment carried out for 50 minutes at 3 Hz, allowed to isolate enzymatic CNCs with 76 % yield and with crystallinity as high as 75 %. The materials were characterized by X‐Ray diffractometry, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR‐FTIR) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM). Their characteristics were compared with the properties of sulfated CNCs, prepared from Avicel by sulfuric acid hydrolysis. Our results are technologically relevant, as they contribute to the accessibility and sustainability of CNCs for a wide range of applications in various industries.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are nanoscale particles made from cellulose. They have many unique properties such as being lightweight, stiff, and renewable, making them promising for a variety of applications in a wide range of industries, including materials science, energy storage, and biomedicine. In this paper, a two-stage (swelling-SA-catalyzed) method including IL pretreatment and solid acid hydrolysis process was developed to extract CNCs with high purity and good thermal stability from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). In the first stage, the swelling of MCC in ionic liquid was studied with the assistance of ultrasonication, and it was found that the amorphous regions became more disordered while the crystalline areas were selectively retained under the conditions of 30 min of reaction time, 45 °C of temperature, 2% of ionic liquid water content and 1:4 mass ratio of cellulose to ionic liquid. CNCs were extracted using solid acid hydrolysis, with a 45 wt% solid acid to cellulose ratio and a 5.0 h hydrolysis process at 45 °C. The morphology, crystallinity, surface characteristics and thermo stability of the sample were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. Results demonstrated the highly thermostable CNCs were successful extracted with rodlike shape of 300 ± 100 nm in length and 20 ± 10 nm in width. Solid acid recovery and reuse were also studied, revealing a promising candidate that can reduce the environmental impact associated with chemical products.

The Simultaneous Production of Two Distinct Types of Cellulose Nanocrystals

Abstract:We develop a route to prepare two types of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs, CNC1 and CNC2) from a unique biomass resource, the fruit shell of Camellia oleifera Abel (SCOA), by integrating sulfuric acid hydrolysis and high-pressure homogenization and examine the effects of hydrolysis time on characteristics of the CNCs during the process. The CNCs exhibit different evolutions in size, morphology, surface charge, and crystallinity with increasing hydrolysis time. While both the CNCs have high crystallinity, CNC1 is of rod-like character with a relatively low aspect ratio, and CNC2 exhibits a hairy appearance with a high aspect ratio. We highlight that controlled acid hydrolysis contributes to the formation of weak spots with an increased susceptibility for homogenizing cellulosic solid residues into hairy CNCs. This is a good step toward tailoring CNC properties in a conventional and scalable approach to maximize their potential applications.

Abstract:We report a green chemical–physical approach for extracting cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), using a two-step collaborative process combining solvothermal pretreatment and mechanical exfoliation. This method avoids the use of large volumes of sulfuric acid. The structure, morphology, size distribution, zeta potential, crystallinity, and thermal stability of the CNCs are characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron, transmission electron and atomic force microscopies. The yield and properties of the obtained CNCs are investigated and compared with those obtained by the conventional acid hydrolysis method. A yield of 72.17 ± 2.00% was obtained, which was significantly higher than that of 30–35% for the traditional sulfuric acid hydrolysis method. CNCs are obtained with an aspect ratio of 25 times, average length of 280 nm, and average width of 11 nm. The CNCs obtained by the two-step process exhibit better thermal stability than those obtained by the conventional acid hydrolysis. The combination of solvothermal pretreatment and mechanical exfoliation is an efficient and promising method for the large-scale production of CNCs for industrial application.

Zirconium Phosphate Assisted Phosphoric Acid Co-Catalyzed Hydrolysis of Lignocellulose for Enhanced Extraction of Nanocellulose

Abstract:The high mechanical strength, large specific surface area, favorable biocompatibility, and degradability of nanocellulose (CNC) enable it to be a potential alternative to petroleum-based materials. However, the traditional preparation of CNCs requires a large amount of strong acid, which poses a serious challenge to equipment maintenance, waste liquid recycling, and economics. In this study, a solid and easily recoverable zirconium phosphate (ZrP) was used to assist in the phosphoric acid co-catalyzed hydrolysis of lignocellulose for extracting CNCs. Due to the presence of acidic phosphate groups, ZrP has a strong active center with a high catalytic activity. With the assistance of ZrP, the amount of phosphoric acid used in the reaction is significantly reduced, improving the equipment's durability and economic efficiency. The effects of the process conditions investigated were the phosphate acid concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time on the yield of CNCs. The Box-Behnken design (BBD) method from the response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to investigate and optimize the preparation conditions. The optimized pre-treatment conditions were 49.27% phosphoric acid concentration, 65.38 °C reaction temperature, and 5 h reaction time with a maximal cellulose yield (48.33%). The obtained CNCs show a granular shape with a length of 40~50 nm and a diameter of 20~30 nm, while its high zeta potential (-24.5 mV) make CNCs present a stable dispersion in aqueous media. Moreover, CNCs have a high crystallinity of 78.70% within the crystal type of cellulose Ⅰ. As such, this study may pioneer the horizon for developing a green method for the efficient preparation of CNC, and it is of great significance for CNCs practical production process.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are clean and sustainable materials that have drawn significant attention in academia and industry because of their unique physicochemical properties. However, realizing economical and environmentally friendly production of CNCs remains a challenge. In this study, we proposed an innovative strategy to fabricate CNCs, which involves the acid hydrolysis pretreatment of wood cellulose fibers using innocuous and recyclable ferric chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3·6H2O). During the molten FeCl3·6H2O treatment, the degree of polymerization (DP) of the cellulose fibers sharply decreased, along with the transformation of cellulose I to cellulose II crystallites. Molten FeCl3·6H2O quickly hydrolyzed cellulose fibers within 5 min at 80 °C, inducing a rapid decrease in the DP from 922 to 196, and the water-insoluble solid (WIS) retention reached 80.1%. CNCs were successfully produced from the mechanical disintegration of the WIS with a low energy input. Hence, the yield of CNCs is consistent with that of the WIS. Interestingly, the CNCs exhibited typical cellulose II crystallites, which were significantly different from those of the cellulose feedstock (cellulose I). Detailed characterization revealed that the CNCs had tunable number-averaged heights of 10.4–26.9 nm and high thermal stability (a maximal weight loss temperature of 327 °C). Most notably, FeCl3·6H2O was easily recycled from the hydrolysate after hydrolysis, with a high recovery of 94.0–94.5 wt %, using simple concentration and crystallization technologies. Thus, this study proposes a novel production technology for CNCs that is both economical and eco-friendly, providing new ideas for clean and large-scale production of CNCs.

Abstract:This study aims to develop a green, pollution-free and high yield method to prepare cellulose nanocrystals (CNC). Using microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) as raw material, CNC was successfully obtained under the synergistic effect of ultrasound and phosphotungstic acid (PTA). The optimal preparation conditions were determined by response surface method (RSM) as the concentration of PTA 13.7 %, ultrasonication time 61 min, and reaction time 6 h. Under the optimum process conditions, a short rod-like CNC with a yield of 77.1 % was obtained. Compared with traditional sulfuric acid method and non-ultrasonication PTA method, the CNC obtained by ultrasonication-assisted PTA method has excellent stability, and the synergistic effect of PTA and ultrasound greatly improves the reaction rate, and the crystallinity of CNC can reach 86.93 % at low acid concentration. In addition, PTA has little corrosion damage, and shows high catalytic efficiency and stable cycle performance in at least five uses, which has a positive impact on economics and sustainability. These characteristics fully prove that the ultrasonication-assisted PTA method has a high potential in the industrial production of CNC, which is a new green way to prepare CNC with high yield.

Abstract:As a weak tricarboxylic acid, citric acid (CA) has been proposed for the preparation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) due to its innocuous and easily recyclable nature. However, the yield of the obtained CNCs is normally below 30% by CA hydrolysis due to the weak acidity of CA. In this work, FeCl3 was discovered as a powerful catalyst to enhance the CA hydrolysis efficiency for the green and highly efficient preparation of carboxylic and thermostable CNCs. The maximum yield of 80.28% could be achieved via FeCl3-catalyzed CA hydrolysis under the optimal condition of 85 wt % CA aqueous solution and 0.02 mmol FeCl3/g CA at 80 °C for 6 h hydrolysis. It was found that the as-prepared CNCs (6–12 nm in diameter, 100–250 nm in length) showed a maximum crystallinity index of around 80% and high thermal stability (Tmax is around 355 °C). Also, the obtained CNCs functionalized with carboxylic groups exhibited superior dispersibility in an aqueous medium. In addition, both the CA and FeCl3 could be easily recovered after hydrolysis, and the collected sugars after hydrolysis can be used as precursors for producing platform chemicals such as lactic acid and furfural. Therefore, this study presents a green and sustainable approach for the highly efficient production of carboxylic CNCs with great dispersibility and high thermal stability. Abstract:Spherical cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), as a new and high value cellulose derivative, shows excellent application potential in many fields due to its special structure. The accurate and effective separation of pure spherical CNCs lays foundation for its further application. In this work, spherical CNCs were prepared by enzymatic hydrolysis of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) with complex enzymes. In order to determine the optimal separation conditions of pure spherical CNCs, turbidity and Zeta potential were used to analyze the influence of pH on system stability, and the size and morphology of samples were characterized by DLS, AFM and SEM. The results showed that spherical CNCs with particle size of 24-76 nm can be separated from large particles with the help of alkali (pH = 9) dispersion and centrifugation speed of 3000 rpm. After three acid (pH = 4) washes, pure spherical CNCs were extracted and reducing sugars and enzyme proteins were removed. Compared with MCC, spherical CNCs had lower crystallinity but stronger reactivity and higher heat transfer. DTG results showed that the maximum weight loss temperature of spherical CNCs prepared by enzymatic hydrolysis was 309 °C.

Abstract:Nanocellulose has received considerable attention in diverse research fields owing to its unique nanostructure-mediated physicochemical properties. However, classical acid hydrolysis usually completely destroys the microstructural integrity of cellulose, leading to the violent dissociation of cellulose into low-dimensional nanofibers, and limiting the formation of intact structures with high specific surface areas. Herein, we have optimized the methodology of dilute acid vapor hydrolysis combined with the enzymatic hydrolysis (DAVE) method and investigated the pore formation mechanism of cellulose nanomesh (CNM). Benefiting from the selective nano-engraving effect of hydrochloric acid vapor on the amorphous region of cellulose followed by widening of the three-dimensional nanopores using an enzymatic hydrolysis, confirmed by topographic, spectroscopic, and crystallographic tests, the as-prepared CNM, significantly different from the existing nanocellulose, exhibited improved specific surface area (98.37 m 2 /g), high yield (88.5 %), high crystallinity (73.4 %), and excellent thermal stability (375.4 °C). The proposed DAVE approach may open a new avenue for nanocellulose manufacturing.

Abstract:This study presents an easy, low-cost, high-yield fabrication method for spherical cellulose nanocrystals (SCNCs) from raw celluloses of eucalyptus pulp (EP) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) via a synergetic strategy of swelling-enzymolysis-mechanical treatment. The effects of swelling, enzymolysis, and homogenization on the morphology and properties of the SCNCs obtained from the two raw celluloses were systematically investigated. In comparison with the method that only resulted in low-yield (at most 8%) SCNCs from the supernatants prepared by swelling and enzymolysis of raw celluloses in sequence or simultaneously, high-yield, well-dispersed SCNCs with a high purity of more than 98% was obtained by high-pressure homogenization of centrifugal precipitates of the swollen and enzymatically hydrolyzed raw celluloses. The total yields of SCNCs with diameters of 20–50 nm were ca. 72% and 74% from EP and MCC, respectively. The deconvolution fitting of FT-IR showed that the intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bonds related to O(6) within the anhydroglucose unit of cellulose were largely destroyed in the process of enzymatic hydrolysis, which was closely associated with the degradation of partial crystalline regions by endonuclease under high enzyme activity, thus promoting the depolymerization of cellulose and the formation of SCNCs. The crystal structure of the resulting SCNCs did not change. In particular, compared with SCNCs from EP, the SCNCs obtained from MCC possessed high crystallinity (88.5%), thermal stability (decomposition temperature, 341.7 °C), and hydrophobicity. The unique morphology and excellent properties of SCNCs may broaden the application of cellulose-based nanomaterials in high value-added fields.

Abstract:The commercial production of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) requires high concentration of sulfuric or other acids such as hydrochloric, phosphoric, and nitric acids. However, these acids and the involved process are corrosive, toxic, energy-intensive, and not environmentally safe. In this work, a batch mixer reactive process that entails high shear was implemented using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BmimCl) media and molten oxalic acid dihydrate (OA) to produce CNCs from cellulose. Through this, a maximum CNC yield (59 wt%) was obtained with a mixture composition of 1:0.7:0.075 (Cellulose:BmimCl:OA, w/w/w) and a processing time of 2.5 min. Further investigation revealed that the particle size, degree of crystallinity, and thermal stability of the produced CNCs were found to be competitive with those of a commercial CNC product. This study asserts the potential industrial application of an efficient ionic liquid and molten organic acid treatment for CNC production via reactive processing in a batch mixer.
