Abstract:Energetic ionic salts derived from (E)-1,2-di(2'H-[1,5'-bitetrazol]-5-yl) diazene (DTDA) (C4N18H2) are a kind of newly synthesized polynitrogen energetic compounds composed of four tetrazole rings. Because these salts possess a high enthalpy and a high-energy density, they have been valuable as high -energy density materials. However, their sensitivity has always been a problem that people cannot avoid when using them. Some of these polynitrogen energetic materials have great potential but low sensitivity, even lower than those of nitoamine explosives RDX and HMX, which are widely used, and the hydrogen bond network formed in the system plays a decisive role in their stability and sensitivity. Based on the crystal structure of DTDA, weak interaction analyses are carried out including hydrogen bond analysis, planarity analysis, conjugated pi-electron analysis, and pi-pi stacking analysis. Subsequently, the mechanism of tetrazole ring opening by stimulation is further clarified by bond order analysis and transition-state calculation in this work. The results indicate that of the studied six DTDA derivatives, DTDA-f shows low sensitivity, which is due to the hydrogen bonding, pi-pi stacking, and energy barrier of the initial reaction. Furthermore, the sensitivity correlates well with the rank of the strength of these weak interactions in general, confirming that this phenomenon is helpful to design new energetic materials with high energy and low sensitivity.
