Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous Zn/delta-MnO2 batteries are extensively investigated owing to the low cost, safety and eco-friendliness. However, the charge storage mechanism of delta-MnO2 electrode is still in debate. In this paper, it is revealed that the Zn2+ intercalation in delta-MnO2 electrode is an ion exchange process rather than the commonly-conceived electrochemical process for the first time. Before the discharge/charge process, Zn2+ irreversibly intercalates into the structure of delta-MnO2. The ion-exchange mediated irreversible Zn2+ intercalation in delta-MnO2 has no contribution to the capacity of delta-MnO2 electrode during cycles. This study further reveals that the electrochemical H+ intercalation/extraction, the electrodissolution of delta-MnO2 and the electrodissolution-electrodeposition of vernadite dominate the charge storage process of delta-MnO2 electrode. These findings shed new light on the fundamental understanding for the reaction mechanism of delta-MnO2 electrode in aqueous batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous Zn/α-MnO2 batteries have attracted immense interest owing to their high energy density, low cost, and safety, making them desirable for future large-scale energy application. Despite these merits, the comprehensive understanding of their reaction mechanism has been elusive due to the limitations of standard bulk characterization. Here, via transmission electron microscopy, the dissolution-mediated reaction mechanism of a Zn/α-MnO2 system is discovered and explored in full scope to involve reversible formation of Zn4 SO4 (OH)6 ·xH2 O and "birnessite-like" Zn-MnOx phase upon cycling. Overall, α-MnO2 acts primarily as a source for cell activation through dissolution and thus is not directly involved in the Zn redox chemistry. This microscopic study offers a unique knowledge on the unconventional reaction chemistry of Zn/α-MnO2 batteries.

Abstract:Abstract This study reports the phase transformation behaviour associated with electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) utilized as the positive electrode active material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Electrochemical techniques, including galvanostatic charge–discharge and rotating ring-disk electrode measurements, and microstructural techniques, using X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission/scanning transmission electron microscopy, were utilized to characterize the positive electrode at different stages of discharge and charge of zinc-ion cells. The results indicate that, during discharge, a fraction of EMD undergoes a transformation to ZnMn 2 O 4 (spinel-type) and Zn 2+ is intercalated into the tunnels of the γ- and ε-MnO 2 phases, forming Zn x MnO 2 (tunnel-type). When a critical concentration of Mn 3+ in the intercalated Zn x MnO 2 species is reached, a disproportionation/dissolution reaction is triggered leading to the formation of soluble Mn 2+ and hydroxide (OH – ) ions; the latter precipitates as zinc hydroxide sulfate (ZHS, Zn 4 (OH) 6 (SO 4 )·5H 2 O) by combination with the ZnSO 4 /H 2 O electrolyte. During charge, Zn 2+ is reversibly deintercalated from the intergrown tunneled phases (γ-/ε-Zn x MnO 2 ), Mn 2+ is redeposited as layered chalcophanite (ZnMn 3 O 7 ·3H 2 O), and ZHS is decomposed by protons (H + ) formed during the electrochemical deposition of chalcophanite.

Abstract:Vanadium oxides with high specific capacity have been widely used as cathode materials for aqueous Zn-ion batteries. However, the interactions between the aqueous electrolytes and Vanadium oxides are still unclear. In particular, the intercalation of proton and water which can play a critical role in the degradation process is less well understood. Moreover, the mechanism for the capacity increase during the electrochemical cycling, known as the activation process, is still under debate. In this study, we systematically investigated the α-V2O5||Zn battery system with state-of-the-art characterization tools and electrochemical testing techniques to reveal the activation and degradation processes. It is discovered that the activation can be mainly attributed to the intercalation of protons and water in the first 100 cycles, which destabilizes the overall structural integrity, leading to capacity degradation afterward. It is also revealed that two main cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) components can be formed on the cathode surface, namely Zn3(V2O7)(OH)2·2H2O and Znm(CF3SO3)n(OH)2m-n·nH2O. The formation of Zn3(V2O7)(OH)2·2H2O-based CEI component is irreversible, while Znm(CF3SO3)n(OH)2m-n·nH2O-based CEI component can be reversibly cycled. Different structure-stabilizing charge/discharge protocols are proposed accordingly, which could leverage the structural integrity with thorough phase transition in the activation stage to enhance the cycling performance of the V-based cathodes. We hope to spur further interest in the fundamental understanding of the cathode materials in Zn-ion batteries.

Abstract:In recent years, rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have received much attention. However, the disproportionation effect of Mn(2+)seriously affects the capacity retention of ZIBs during cycling. Here, the capacity retention of the Mn(3)O(4)cathode is improved by effective valence engineering. The valence engineering of Mn(3)O(4)is caused by bulk oxygen defects, which are in situ derived from the Mn-metal organic framework during carbonization. Bulk oxygen defects can change the (MnO6) octahedral structure, which improves structural stability and inhibits the dissolution of Mn2+. The ZIB assembled from bulk oxygen defects Mn3O4@C nanorod arrays (O-d-Mn3O4@C NA/CC) exhibits an ultra-long cycle life, reaching 84.1 mAh g(-1)after 12 000 cycles at 5 A g(-1)(up to 95.7% of the initial capacity). Furthermore, the battery has a high specific capacity of 396.2 mAh g(-1)at 0.2 A g(-1). Ex situ characterization results show that initial Mn(3)O(4)is converted to ramsdellite MnO(2)for insertion and extraction of H(+)and Zn2+. First-principles calculations show that the charge density of Mn(3+)increases greatly, which improves the conductivity. In addition, the flexible quasi-solid-state ZIB is successfully assembled using O-d-Mn3O4 @ C NA/CC. Valence engineering induced by bulk oxygen defects can help develop advanced cathodes for aqueous ZIB.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc batteries (ZIBs) have attracted considerable attention in recent years because of their high safety and eco-friendly features. Numerous studies have shown that adding Mn2+ salts to ZnSO4 electrolytes enhanced overall energy densities and extended the cycling life of Zn/MnO2 batteries. It is commonly believed that Mn2+ additives in the electrolyte inhibit the dissolution of MnO2 cathode. To better understand the role of Mn2+ electrolyte additives, the ZIB using a Co3O4 cathode instead of MnO2 in 0.3 m MnSO4 + 3 m ZnSO4 electrolyte is built to avoid interference from MnO2 cathode. As expected, the Zn/Co3O4 battery exhibits electrochemical characteristics nearly identical to those of Zn/MnO2 batteries. Operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and electrochemical analyses are carried out to determine the reaction mechanism and pathway. This work demonstrates that the electrochemical reaction occurring at cathode involves a reversible Mn2+/MnO2 deposition/dissolution process, while a chemical reaction of Zn2+/Zn4SO4(OH)(6)center dot 5H(2)O deposition/dissolution is involved during part of the charge/discharge cycle due to the change in the electrolyte environment. The reversible Zn2+/Zn4SO4(OH)(6)center dot 5H(2)O reaction contributes no capacity and lowers the diffusion kinetics of the Mn2+/MnO2 reaction, which prevents the operation of ZIBs at high current densities.
Dynamic Amorphous Zn0.17MnO2−n·0.52H2O Electrochemical Crystal Transition for Highly Reversible Zinc‐Ion Batteries with Ultrahigh Capacity and Long Lifespan

Abstract:Mn‐based oxides promise high energy density and low toxicity cathodes for aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs) but suffer from complex irreversible phase transitions, accompanied by continuous disproportionation reactions and manganese dissolution. Tailor‐made reversible and robust crystal structure in Mn‐based material is crucial and challenging. Here a controllable electrochemical oxidation induced crystal transition strategy is developed for the transformation of cubic α‐Mn2O3 into amorphous Zn0.17MnO2−n·0.52H2O, which serves as the host of Zn2+, empowering more highly accessible built‐in zincophilic sites whilst alleviating the lattice repulsion of Zn2+ (de)intercalation. As confirmed by crystal structure evolution characterizations and theoretical simulations, the amorphous Zn0.17MnO2−n·0.52H2O with excellent electronic properties and low zinc‐ion migration barrier can be reversibly converted into ZnMn3O7·3H2O. This stabilized dynamic electrochemical crystal transition equilibrium contributes ultrahigh capacity (558 mAh g−1), high‐energy density (696 Wh kg−1@6 kW kg−1), and superior stability (5000 cycles). The approach can also extend to Mn3O4 and α‐MnO2, opening new insights into electrochemical oxidation induced crystal conversion to build highly reversible and durable ZIBs.

The different electrodeposition reactions with different concentration of Mn2+ pre-added in electrolyte cause the distinct irreversible transformation of 8-MnO2 into vernadite or ZnMn2O4 after long cycles. These findings shed new light on the reaction mechanism for 8-MnO2 electrode in aqueous zinc ion batteries.

Abstract:In the family of Zn/manganese oxide batteries with mild aqueous electrolytes, cubic α-Mn2O3 with bixbyite structure is rarely considered, because of the lack of the tunnel and/or layered structure that are usually believed to be indispensable for the incorporation of Zn ions. In this work, the charge storage mechanism of α-Mn2O3 is systematically and comprehensively investigated. It is demonstrated that the electrochemically induced irreversible phase transition from α-Mn2O3 to layered-typed L-ZnxMnO2, coupled with the dissolution of Mn2+ and OH− into the electrolyte, allows for the subsequent reversible de-/intercalation of Zn2+. Moreover, it is proven that α-Mn2O3 is not a host for H+. Instead, the MnO2 formed from L-ZnxMnO2 and the Mn2+ in the electrolyte upon the initial charge is the host for H+. Based on this electrode mechanism, combined with fabricating hierarchically structured mesoporous α-Mn2O3 microrod array material, an unprecedented rate capability with 103 mAh g−1 at 5.0 A g−1 as well as an appealing stability of 2000 cycles (at 2.0 A g−1) with a capacity decay of only ≈0.009% per-cycle are obtained.

Abstract:In recent years, there have been extensive debates regarding the charging mechanism of MnO2 cathodes in aqueous Zn electrolytes. The discussion centered on several key aspects including the identity of the charge carriers contributing to the overall capacity, the nature of the electrochemical process, and the role of the zinc hydroxy films that are reversibly formed during the charging/discharging. Intense studies are also devoted to understanding the effect of the Mn2+ additive on the performance of the cathodes. Nevertheless, it seems that a consistent explanation of the α-MnO2 charging mechanism is still lacking. To address this, a step-by-step analysis of the MnO2 cathodes is conducted. Valuable information is obtained by using in situ electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (EQCM-D) monitoring, supplemented by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) in Characterization of Materials, and pH measurements. The findings indicate that the charging mechanism is dominated by the insertion of H3O+ ions, while no evidence of Zn2+ intercalation is found. The role of the Mn2+ additive in promoting the generation of protons by forming MnOOH, enhancing the stability of Zn/α-MnO2 batteries is thoroughly investigated. This work provides a comprehensive overview on the electrochemical and the chemical reactions associated with the α-MnO2 electrodes, and will pave the way for further development of aqueous cathodes for Zn-ion batteries.

Abstract:Due to the rapid development of energy storage systems from the goal of carbon neutrality, rechargeable aqueous Zn-MnO2 batteries have attracted growing attention. While the controversy surrounding various mechanisms, such as Zn2+ insertion, Zn2+/H+ co-insertion and Mn dissolution/deposition, leads to limitation of MnO2 cathodes, especially for the β-MnO2. Though showing promising performance in recent works, the reaction process and influence factors of β-MnO2 cathodes are still under debate. In this work, a complete MnO2/Mn2+ redox chemistry is proposed to explain the abnormal electrochemical behaviors of β-MnO2 cathodes, which indicates the reversible dissolution/deposition of layered manganese oxides appears after the initial MnO2 dissolution reaction. The revealed effects of interfacial environment in regulating the electrochemical reactions also provide a new perspective for studying the working mechanism of aqueous Zn-MnO2 batteries. Besides, the high specific capacity shown in the MnO2/Mn2+ redox chemistry also contributes to designing high-performance cathodes for AZIBs.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous Zn-Mn batteries have garnered extensive attention for next-generation high-safety energy storage. However, the charge-storage chemistry of Zn-Mn batteries remains controversial. Prevailing mechanisms include conversion reaction and cation (de)intercalation in mild acid or neutral electrolytes, and a MnO2 /Mn2+ dissolution-deposition reaction in strong acidic electrolytes. Herein, a Zn4 SO4 ·(OH)6 ·xH2 O (ZSH)-assisted deposition-dissolution model is proposed to elucidate the reaction mechanism and capacity origin in Zn-Mn batteries based on mild acidic sulfate electrolytes. In this new model, the reversible capacity originates from a reversible conversion reaction between ZSH and Znx MnO(OH)2 nanosheets in which the MnO2 initiates the formation of ZSH but contributes negligibly to the apparent capacity. The role of ZSH in this new model is confirmed by a series of operando characterizations and by constructing Zn batteries using other cathode materials (including ZSH, ZnO, MgO, and CaO). This research may refresh the understanding of the most promising Zn-Mn batteries and guide the design of high-capacity aqueous Zn batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable Zn/MnO2 battery chemistry in mildly acidic aqueous electrolytes has attracted extensive attention because of its properties as safe, inexpensiveness, and high theoretical specific capacity of cathode/zinc anode. However, the major limitation of MnO2 cathode is its unclear energy storage mechanism. Herein, the reaction mechanism in ZnSO4+MnSO4 electrolyte is investigated by various electrochemical and structural analysis based on two different structure manganese dioxide (α-MnO2 and δ-MnO2) and Zn4SO4(OH)6·4H2O (ZHS) prepared on purpose. We break the inherent concept that the host MnO2 materials should maintain a stable crystal structure, and propose that the Zn/MnO2 battery is dominated by the Dissolution-Deposition reaction mechanism, while the classical cations (H+, Zn2+) Intercalation/De-intercalation mechanism contributes little capacity in energy storage process. The major limitations of reaction kinetics, such as ZHS and active H2O, are explored in this work. It is the first time that the new Dissolution-Deposition mechanism is proposed in aqueous zinc-ion battery, which gives a new insight in Zn/MnO2 battery chemistry.

Abstract:Aqueous Zn/MnO 2 batteries with their environmental sustainability and competitive cost, are becoming a promising, safe alternative for grid-scale electrochemical energy storage. Presented as a promising design principle to deliver a higher theoretical capacity, this work offers a fundamental understanding of the dissolution-deposition mechanism of Zn/β-MnO 2 . A multimodal synchrotron characterization approach including three operando X-ray techniques (powder diffraction, absorption spectroscopy, and fluorescence microscopy) is coupled with elementally resolved synchrotron X-ray nano-tomography. Together they provide a direct correlation between structural evolution, reaction chemistry, and 3D morphological changes. Operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy show a crystalline-to-amorphous phase transition. Quantitative modeling of the operando data by Rietveld refinement for X-ray diffraction and multivariate curve resolution (MCR) for X-ray absorption spectroscopy are used in a complimentary fashion to track the structural and chemical transitions of both the long-range (crystalline phases) and short-range (including amorphous phases) ordering upon cycling. Scanning X-ray microscopy and full-field nano-tomography visualizes the morphology of electrodes at different electrochemical states with elemental sensitivity to spatially resolve the formation of the Zn- and Mn-containing phases. Overall, this work critically indicates that for Zn/MnO 2 aqueous batteries, the reaction pathways involving Zn-Mn complex formation upon cycling become independent of the polymorphs of the initial electrode and sheds light on the interplay among structural, chemical, and morphological evolution for electrochemically driven phase transitions.

Abstract:The appeal of safe, energy-dense, and environmentally-friendly MnO 2 as a cathode for rechargeable aqueous zinc–metal oxide batteries (AZMOBs) has attracted significant research attention, but unexpected complexities have resulted in a decade of confusion and conflicting claims. The literature base is near saturation with a mix of efforts to achieve practical, rechargeable Zn-ion batteries and to untangle the presented electrochemical mechanisms. We have summarized the respective mechanisms and contextualized the respective justifications. As new perspectives arise from in situ and operando techniques, renewed efforts must solidify mechanistic understandings and reconcile disparate data through judicial application of ab initio modelling. In light of a variety of MnO 2 cathode phases and stable, meta -stable, and complex reaction products, this perspective emphasizes the need for greater supplementation of the in situ and operando characterization with modelling, such as density functional theory. Through the elucidation of key mechanisms under dynamic operating and characterization conditions, the body of previously contradictory research and routes to practical batteries may be unified, and guide the way to longevity and grid-scale applicable charge rates and capacity.

Abstract:Due to the abundant manganese reserves and the ability to provide higher voltages, the Mn3+ and Mn4+ cathode materials have been widely studied in zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). However, there are some common disadvantages including poor conductivity and the expansion in volume during cycling, which exist in these Mn3+ and Mn4+ materials. Herein, we applied pure MnO as an electrode material to ZIBs and discussed the reaction mechanism. Specifically, the energy density could reach 431.5 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1, which was the highest in the Mn-based materials. It also showed high capacity (187.8 mAh g−1) after 500 cycles at 1A g−1. And after 1200 cycles at 1.5 A g−1, the capacity retention rate was still at 87.3%, suggesting the great long-life cycling. This kind of MnO encapsulated by carbon can bring new opportunities for Mn-based ZIBs.

Abstract:In response to the call for safer energy storage systems, rechargeable aqueous manganese-based zinc-ion (Zn-ion) batteries using mild electrolyte have attracted extensive attention. However, the charge-storage mechanism and structure change of manganese-based cathode remain controversial topics. Herein, a systematic study to understand the electrochemical behavior and charge storage mechanism based on a 3 × 3 tunnel-structured Mgx MnO2 as well as the correspondence between different tunnel structures and reaction mechanisms are reported. The energy storage mechanism of the different tunnel structure is surface faradaic dissolution/deposition coupled with an intercalation mechanism of cations in aqueous electrolyte, which is confirmed by in situ X-ray diffraction, in situ Raman and ex situ extended X-ray absorption fine structure. The deposition process at the cathode is partially reversible due to the accumulation of a birnessite layer on the surface. Compared to smaller tunnels, the 3 × 3 tunnel structure is more conducive to deposit new active materials from the electrolyte. Therefore, pristine Mgx MnO2 nanowires with large tunnels display an excellent cycling performance. This work sheds light on the relationship between the tunnel structure and Mn2+ deposition and provides a promising cathode material design for aqueous Zn-ion batteries.
