Abstract:Radical-containing materials have received renewed interest due to their charge-conducting properties. However, most work focuses on macromolecules, while less attention has been paid to radical -containing small molecules. Here, we quantify the electrical conductivity in two organic radical single crystals and demonstrate that a subtle change in atomic connectivity drastically alters the macroscopic electronic properties of the materials. One radical crystal has an electrical conductivity of -3 S m-1, which is the among the highest values for nonconjugated radical conductors over a 1 mm scale. However, the other radical crystal has a 1,000-fold lower conductivity, despite their extremely similar molecular structures. The temperature-dependent conductivity follows the variable range hopping mechanism for both radical crystals, and the difference in effective charge mobility is the reason for the conductivity difference. These results present a clear picture of the design rules and charge transport mechanism for radical-based small-molecule materials.

Abstract:Supramolecular assembly utilizing noncovalent interaction to construct ordered molecular charge-transfer solids has led to significant advancement and breakthrough in energy-efficient molecular electronics, memories and solar cells. However, to exploit the coupling across these different energy regimes, the method that is capable of manipulating charge-spinlattice interactions is indispensable. Here, by rational chemical design of the supramolecular assembled charge-transfer networks, opto-ferroic properties can be coupled, in which a collective electron transfer and ordering strongly influence the dipole and spin orders, as well as their coupling. The supramolecular charge-transfer crystal presented here opens up a new route for the development of multifunctional organics that can lead to significant advancement in molecular ferronics.

Abstract:Owing to their switchable spin states and dynamic electronic character, organic-based radical species have been invoked in phenomena unique to a variety of fields. When incorporated in solid state materials, generation of organic radicals proves challenging due to aggregation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising candidates for immobilization and stabilization of organic radicals because of the tunable spatial arrangement of organic linkers and metal nodes, which sequesters the reactive species. Herein, a flexible, redox-active tetracarboxylic acid linker bearing two imidazole units was chosen to construct a new Zr6-MOF, NU-910, with scu topology. By exploiting the structural flexibility of NU-910, we successfully modulate the dynamics between an isolated organic radical species and an organic radical π-dimer species in the MOF system. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that through solvent exchange from N,N-diethylformamide to acetone, NU-910 undergoes a structural contraction with interlinker distances decreasing from 8.32 Å to 3.20 Å at 100 K. Organic radical species on the bridging linkers are generated via UV light irradiation. Direct observation of temperature-induced spin switches from an isolated radical species to a magnetically silent radical π-dimer in NU-910 after irradiation in the solid state was achieved via variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction and variable-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations further substantiated the formation of a radical cation π-dimer upon irradiation. This work demonstrates the potential of using flexible MOFs as a platform to modulate radical spin states in the solid phase.

Abstract:Conducting polymers based on open-shell radical moieties exhibit potentially advantageous processing, stability, and optical attributes compared with conventional doped conjugated polymers. Despite their ascendance, reported radical conductors have been based almost exclusively on (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO), which raises fundamental questions regarding the ultimate limits of charge transport in these materials and whether some of the deficiencies exhibited by contemporary materials are due to the choice of radical chemistry. To address these questions, we have performed a density functional theory (DFT) study of the charge transfer characteristics of a broad range of open-shell chemistries relevant to radical conductors, including p-type, n-type, and ambipolar open-shell chemistries. We observe that far from being representative, TEMPO exhibits anomalously high reorganization energies due to strong charge localization. This, in turn, limits charge transfer in TEMPO compared with more delocalized open-shell species. By comprehensively mapping the dependence of charge transfer on radical-radical orientation, we have also identified a large mismatch between the conformations that are favored by intermolecular interactions and the conformations that maximize charge transfer in all of the open-shell chemistries investigated. These results suggest that significant opportunities exist to exploit directing interactions to promote charge transport in radical polymers.

Abstract:Heterocyclic thiazyl radicals possess unique chemical and physical properties as building blocks for molecule-based conductors and magnetic materials. They do not need protecting groups on their molecular skeletons, and the lack of such substituents permits close packing in the solid state. Moreover, thiazyl radical solids often involve a multidimensional network consisting of π–π overlaps and S···N contacts. The electronic structures of the thiazyl radicals can be compared to highly-correlated electron systems. In this account, we describe various electron-transfer processes in the solids of the thiazyl radicals, which manifest themselves by external stimuli such as temperature change, electric field, and photoillumination.

Herein, we utilized persistent nitronyl nitroxide to construct two categories of nitronyl nitroxide-Ln compounds, [Gd 3 (hfac) 9 (NIT4bpym) 2 ] 2 ·4CH 2 Cl 2 ·C 6 H 14 ( 1-Gd ), [Dy 3 (hfac) 9 (NIT4bpym) 2 ] ( 1-Dy ) and [Dy 3 (hfac) 9 (NITPzCH 2 IM) 2 ]·2CH 2 Cl 2 ( 2-Dy ) (NIT4bpym = 2,2′-dipyridyl-4-(1′-oxyl-3′-oxido-4′,4′,5′,5′-tetramethyl-4,5-hydro-1 H -imidazol-2-yl); NITPzCH 2 IM = [2-(1-methylimidazole)methyl-1-pyrazol]-4-(1′-oxyl-3′-oxido-4′,4′,5′,5′-tetramethyl-4,5-hydro-1 H -imidazol-2-yl) (hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate), involving a rare [4f–2p–4f–2p–4f] multi-spin motif with an electron donor–acceptor pattern. Notably, thanks to the rigidity modification of nitronyl nitroxide, prominent enhancement of photothermal conversion efficiency from 56.9% to 74.0% and the magnetic switching phenomenon have been observed with molecular structure transformation from flexibility ( 2-Dy ) to stiffness ( 1-Dy ), offering an avenue for the regulation of the photothermal effect and magnetic dynamics.

Abstract:The molecular radicals, systems with unpaired electrons of open-shell electronic structures, set the stage for a multidisciplinary science frontier relevant to the cooperative magnetic exchange interaction and magnetoelectric effect. Here ferroelectricity together with magnetic spin exchange coupling in molecular radical hydrocarbon solids is reported, representing a new class of magnetoelectrics. Electronic correlation through radical-radical interactions plays a decisive role in the coupling between magnetic and charge orders. A substantial photoconductance and visible-light photovoltaic effect are found in radical hydrocarbons. The ability to simultaneously control and retrieve the changes in magnetic and electrical responses opens up a new breadth of applications, such as radical magnetoelectrics, magnets, and optoelectronics.

Abstract:Bi- and polyradical organic compounds are of significant interest due to their outstanding magnetic properties. A special attention is paid to the investigation of open-shell helicenes combining in one molecule chirality and paramagnetic centers. With the aim to elucidate the effect of insertion of radical groups on the magnetic behavior of [7]helicene, a series of helicene-based molecules functionalized with 1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolyl, 1,5-dimethyl-6-oxoverdazyl (verdazyl), 4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1 H -imidazol-1-oxyl-3-oxide (nitronyl nitroxide), fluorenyl and tert -butyl nitroxide radicals has been investigated by a comprehensive quantum-chemical modeling of their electronic structure and magnetic properties. The choice of a suitable density functional theory approximation has been made, and its reasonability check was proved by multi-configurational CASSCF calculations. It was shown that fluorenyl- and tert -butyl nitroxide-bearing compounds were stabilized in the closed-shell states, while dithiadiazolyl, verdazyl, and nitronyl nitroxide derivatives were represented by tetraradicals. For the tetraradical molecules, different in nature exchange interactions have been predicted, an important role in the formation of which is played by an extended π-conjugated system of [7]helicene moiety and stacking between terminal six-membered cycles. Considering the presence of two types of paramagnetic centers and unusual optical properties of the helicene skeleton, the proposed systems can be used as promising building blocks for the molecular photonics and electronics devices.

Abstract:Organic radicals are of importance in developing smart materials that have paramagnetic and/or near-infrared optical properties. Their practical applications, however, are limited by the labile nature of the radicals. Here, we demonstrate that by using a tetracationic cyclophane, namely, cyclobis(4,4'-(1,4-phenylene)bispyridine-p-phenylene) (ExBox4+), to encapsulate a naphthalenediimide (NDI) guest, the redox properties of NDI can be modulated. In organic solvents such as MeCN or DMF, ExBox4+ is able to provide the surrounding Coulombic attraction to the NDI•- radical anion and therefore enhance its stability toward oxidation. In water, NDI•- is prone to dimerization, forming its (NDI•-)2 dimer. Under UV-light irradiation, the (NDI•-)2 dimer is observed to disproportionate and yield the dianionic NDI2-. ExBox4+ is able to encapsulate the NDI•- radical anion and prevent its dimerization, and as a consequence, the radical anion is protected from further reduction in a noncovalent manner. We believe that our strategy of modulating the redox properties of NDI by either host-guest recognition or mechanical interlocking can aid and abet the development of radical-based materials, which could be employed in pursuit of applications in many areas, such as transporting spin and charges.

Abstract:Free radicals, generally formed through the cleavage of covalent electron-pair bonds, play an important role in diverse fields ranging from synthetic chemistry to spintronics and nonlinear optics. However, the characterization and regulation of the radical state at a single-molecule level face formidable challenges. Here we present the detection and sophisticated tuning of the open-shell character of individual diradicals with a donor–acceptor structure via a sensitive single-molecule electrical approach. The radical is sandwiched between nanogapped graphene electrodes via covalent amide bonds to construct stable graphene–molecule–graphene single-molecule junctions. We measure the electrical conductance as a function of temperature and track the evolution of the closed-shell and open-shell electronic structures in real time, the open-shell triplet state being stabilized with increasing temperature. Furthermore, we tune the spin states by external stimuli, such as electrical and magnetic fields, and extract thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of the transition between closed-shell and open-shell states. Our findings provide insights into the evolution of single-molecule radicals under external stimuli, which may proof instrumental for the development of functional quantum spin-based molecular devices.

Abstract:The discovery of air-stable organic radicals has sparked interest in their applications in molecular electronics and spintronics. These radicals possess open-shell electronic structures, offering unique electrical characteristics and serving as a versatile platform for spintronics on account of their weak spin-orbit coupling and hyperfine interactions. Additionally, radicals exhibit distinctive properties valuable for constructing supramolecular devices through dimerization, molecular recognition, and mechanical interlocking. This review highlights the applications of air-stable organic radicals in electronics, inspiring molecular design by emphasizing their remarkable electric and magnetic capabilities. It also provides an overview of advances in research related to production methods and properties reliant on supramolecular radicals, broadening the scope of single-molecule investigations. The involvement of radicals in single-molecule reactions is also discussed. Future developments in this field and additional uses for stable radicals are also anticipated. By illuminating the potential of these compounds, this Review contributes to the advancement of molecular electronics and spintronics research.

Abstract:The present work delves into the spin-polarized transport property of organic radicals sandwiched between two zigzag-graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) electrodes by employing density functional theory and nonequilibrium Green’s function technique. We demonstrated that the magnetic center(s) of the radical can manipulate the localized edge states of the ZGNR in the scattering region, causing ferromagnetic coupling. Such manipulation of the magnetic edges results in a high spin-filter effect in molecular junctions, and even the antiferromagnetic diradicals serve as nearly perfect spin filters. We have confirmed that this is a general phenomenon of ZGNR by analyzing two antiferromagnetic diradicals and a doublet. The spin-polarized density of states, transmission spectra, and current vs voltage curves of the systems provide strong evidence for our findings. This research strongly suggests that ZGNRs attached with organic radicals could be the perfect building blocks for spintronic materials.

Abstract:Radicals are inevitable intermediates during the charging and discharging of organic redox electrodes. The increase of the reactivity of the radical intermediates is desirable to maximize the capacity and enhance the rate capability but is detrimental to cycling stability. Therefore, it is a great challenge to controllably balance the redox reactivity and stability of radical intermediates to optimize the electrochemical properties with a good combination of high specific capacity, excellent rate capability, and long-term cycle life. Herein, we reported the redox and tunable stability of radical intermediates in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) considered as high capacity and stable anode for sodium-ion batteries. The comprehensive characterizations combined with theoretical simulation confirmed that the redox of C-O· and α-C radical intermediates play an important role in the sodiation/desodiation process. Specifically, the stacking behavior could be feasibly tuned by the thickness of 2D COFs, essentially determining the redox reactivity and stability of the α-C radical intermediates and their contributive capacity. The modulation of reversible redox chemistry and stabilization mechanism of radical intermediates in COFs offers a novel entry to design novel high performance organic electrode materials for energy storage and conversion.
Strong exchange interactions between two radicals attached to nonaromatic spacers deduced from magnetic, EPR, NMR, and electron density measurements

Abstract:A nitronyl-nitroxide (NIT) biradical D-NIT2 linked by a single double bond has been engineered and investigated in the solid state by a combination of X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility measurement, EPR, as well as solid-state (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopies, and experimental electron density distribution. All techniques reveal that a double bond is a very efficient coupling unit for exchange interactions between two radical moieties. Using a Bleaney-Bowers model dimer (H = -JS(1)S(2)), a singlet-triplet energy gap of J = -460 K was found with the singlet state being the ground state. This very strong intramolecular interaction was confirmed by EPR measurements in CH(2)Cl(2) solution (6 10(-4) M) or dispersed in a polymer matrix at low concentration. In keeping with these unusual interactions, solid-state NMR signals of the biradical were found to be considerably less shifted than those found for related monoradicals. Temperature-dependent solid-state (13)C NMR spectra of D-NIT2 confirmed the very strong intramolecular coupling constant (J = -504 K). The electron density distribution of D-NIT2 was measured by high resolution X-ray diffraction, which also revealed that this biradical is an ideally conjugated system. The in-depth characterization includes the deformation maps and the observed electron density ellipticities, which exhibit a pronounced sigma-pi character of the O-N-C=C-N-O cores in keeping with an efficient electronic delocalization along the alkene spacer.

Abstract:Organic radicals display unique physical structures and could become next generation functional materials. However, design and synthesis of stable neutral radicals with a significant polyradical character has been an enormous challenge for chemists. In this work, we synthesized a series of stable 3,6-linked, kinetically blocked fluorenyl radical oligomers up to hexamer (FR-n, n = 1-6). Their ground-state geometric and electronic structures were systematically studied by various experimental methods including X-ray crystallographic analysis, variable temperature nuclear magnetic resonance, electron spin resonance, and superconducting quantum interference device measurements, supported by density functional theory and ab initio calculations. Moderate antiferromagnetic coupling between the fluorenyl radicals was observed, and moderate to large diradical and polyradical characters were calculated from dimer onward. Furthermore, their photophysical properties were estimated by steady-state, transient absorption, and two-photon absorption measurements, and their electrochemical properties were investigated by cyclic voltammetry/differential pulse voltammetry and spectro-electrochemical measurements. A clear chain length dependence of their optical, electrochemical, and magnetic properties was found for the oligomers with an odd or even number of spin centers, respectively.
