Abstract:The crystallization of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) homo-crystallites (HC) and stereocomplex crystallites (SC) is quite complicated for the inducing and competing effects of SC on HC. Furthermore, carbon dioxide (CO2) would simultaneously influence the H-bond interaction of SC, molecular chain mobility and supercooling of SC and HC, which might further affect the crystallization process of SC-induced HC and the competing crystallization of homogeneous HC and SC. This manuscript revealed the effect of CO2 on the crystallization of HC and SC via influencing crystallization kinetics and spherulites morphology for the first time. The results showed CO2 accelerated the crystallization of SC due to the increasing chain mobility and restrained the crystallization of HC because of the decreased supercooling. The HC could only form in the crystalline assembly of SC under CO2 while in air could generate at the growth front of SC. Due to the chain diffusion increasing, the development of branches of SC was more adequate under CO2, resulting in less space on the surface of SC for HC crystallization. Therefore, under CO2 the heterogeneous HC crystallization was shown as "bundles" and "dentric" crystals, which was imperfect. Homogeneous and heterogeneous HC exhibited different pressure dependence on crystallization behaviors.

Abstract:Stereocomplex (SC) crystallization has been an effective way to improve the physical performances of stereoregular polymers. However, the competition between homo and SC crystallizations can lead to more complicated crystallization kinetics and polymorphic crystalline structure in stereocomplexable polymers, which influences the physical properties of obtained materials. Herein, we select the medium-molecular-weight (MMW) poly(L-lactic acid)/poly(D-lactic acid) (PLLA/PDLA) asymmetric blends with different PDLA fractions (fD=0.01–0.5) as the model system and investigate the effects of fD and crystallization temperature (Tc) on the crystallization kinetics and polymorphic crystalline structure. We observe the fractionated (i.e., multistep) crystallization kinetics and the formation of peculiar β-form homocrystals (HCs) in the asymmetric blends under quiescent conditions, which are strongly influenced by both fD and Tc. Precisely, crystallization of β-form HCs is favorable in the MMW PLLA/PDLA blends with high fD (≥0.2) at a low Tc (80–100 °C). It is proposed that the formation of metastable β-form HCs is attributed to the conformational matching between β-form HCs and SCs, and the stronger constrain effects of precedingly-formed SCs in the early stage of crystallization. Such effects can also cause the multistep crystallization kinetics of MMW PLLA/PDLA asymmetric blends in the heating process.
Competing Stereocomplexation and Homocrystallization of Poly(l-lactic Acid)/poly(d-Lactic Acid) Racemic Mixture: Effects of Miscible Blending with Other Polymers

Abstract:Promoting the stereocomplexation ability of high-molecular-weight poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(d-lactic acid) (PDLA) is an efficient way to improve the thermal resistance of the resulting materials. Herein, we studied the competing crystallization kinetics, polymorphic crystalline structure, and lamellae structure of the PLLA/PDLA component in its miscible blends with poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and proposed a method to improve the stereocomplexation ability of PLLA and PDLA through miscible blending with the other polymer. Crystallization of the PLLA/PDLA component is suppressed after the addition of PVAc, due to the dilution effect. The stereocomplexation ability of PLLA and PDLA is enhanced by blending with PVAc; this becomes more obvious at a high PVAc content (≥50 wt %) but less significant with the further increase of PLLA, PDLA molecular weights. Almost exclusive formation of SCs is achieved for PLLA and PDLA after blending with a large proportion of PVAc (e.g., 75 wt %). Incorporation of PVAc also facilitates the HC-to-SC structural reorganization upon heating. The increased chain mobility, decreased equilibrium melting point, and enhanced intermolecular interactions may account for the preferential stereocomplexation in PLLA/PDLA/PVAc blends.

Abstract:Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(D-lactic acid) (PDLA) can form stereocomplex (sc) crystallites in their racemic blends. Compared to the homocrystalline poly(lactic acid) (PLA), sc-type PLA has much better heat and chemical resistances. Therefore, sc crystallization of PLA has been an effective method to improve its physical properties. However, the formations of homo and sc crystallites are competing in the crystallization of PLLA/PDLA racemic blends. A critical issue to prepare the heat-resistant sc-type PLA is to understand the formation conditions and mechanism of sc crystallization, and further to control and promote the extent of sc crystallization. Sc crystallization is affected by a variety of factors such as the chemical structure of polymer component, crystallization and processing conditions in PLLA/PDLA racemic blends, and their influential mechanisms are very complicated. According to the various factors influencing sc crystallization, this paper will review the research progress of sc crystallization behavior and preparation of sc materials for PLLA/PDLA blends in recent years from the aspects of polymer molecular weight, stereoregularity, blend ratio, polymer topology, crystallization method and condition, and addition of additive or other components. It is expected that this review can provide a theoretical guideline for the preparation of heat-resistant biobased PLA materials.

Abstract:CaCO3 was synthesized in the presence of amphiphilic St/AA copolymer (PAS). XRD, MR and SEM were employed to investigate the crystallization behavior and morphogenesis of CaCO3 while the different composition of PAS affects the array of functional group on the molecular chain/solubility and micellization behavior. As the content of hydrophilic AA unit increases, PAS induces CaCO3 nucleation through match between AA unit and calcite lattice to form nano-size primary particles; in the meanwhile, under the influence of PAS solubility, CaCO3 particles. are accordingly varied in morphology. Mechanisms of insoluble matrices are proposed for the formation of this unique structure.

Abstract:Recently, the homogeneous crystallization of polymers under CO2 has been investigated systematically, while the effect of CO2 on heterogeneous crystallization such as crystallization memory effect of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is still unknown due to its complicated process. In this study, the crystallization behavior induced by the crystallization memory effect of poly(d-lactic acid) (PDLA) under CO2 has been studied. The results showed that the crystallization memory effect decreased the difference in nucleation kinetics between PLA under the atmosphere and CO2, and the secondary nucleation constant increased with increasing CO2. Except for kinetics, the crystallization morphology was affected by CO2. During the crystallization memory process, the existence of CO2 activated the molecular chain mobility and affected the structure of both the original central spherulite and the newly formed spherulites. The plasticization effect of CO2 prevented the branching of the original central spherulite, and with the help of the residue molecular chain, the height of the central spherulite increased. The dendritic crystals at the periphery of the growth front of the central spherulite changed to rod-like crystals due to the increasing chain diffusion and the closer chain arrangement caused by CO2. As a result, the perfection of both central spherulites and newly formed spherulites was increased by CO2. This study reveals that the increasing chain mobility under CO2 changes crystallization morphology of both recrystallized spherulites and newly formed spherulites and benefits the formation of more perfect crystals.

Abstract:CO2-based stereocomplexed polycarbonates derived from the intermolecularly interlocked interaction between the enantiopure polymers with the opposite configuration exhibit high crystallinity, excellent thermal and mechanical stabilities. Deep insights into the mechanism of stereocomplexation are of particular importance to the design and manufacture of new promising and sustainable polycarbonates with enhanced physicochemical properties. Our solid-state NMR experiments linking with DFT computations clearly reveal the specific chain–chain interactions in a typical stereocomplexed poly (4,4-dimethyl-3,5,8-trioxabicyclo[5.1.0] octane carbonate) (PCXC). 13C CP/MAS NMR, 1H DUMBO MAS NMR and 13C/1H relaxation-time measurements indicate that the formation of stereocomplex reduces the local mobilities of carbonyl, methine and methylene groups in each chain of PCXC significantly. Through a combination of two-dimensional 1H13C HETCOR NMR and DFT calculation analysis, the cis-/trans- conformations and packing models of PCXC chains in the amorphous, enantionpure isotactic and stereocomplexed polycarbonates are identified. The splitting of 13C and 1H NMR chemical shifts of methine groups in the backbone carbon region demonstrates the ordered interlock interactions between the R- and S- chain in the stereocomplexed PCXC.

Abstract:The use of CO2 for substituting volatile organic compounds in polymer processing,i.e.,supercritical CO2-assisted polymer processing,has attracted increasing attention in recent years.Dissolution of CO2 in polymer could swell,plasticize and deliver small molecules into the polymer matrixes.Consequently,the structure and morphology of the polymer would change,as well as the fundamental properties,including polymer crystallization,interfacial tension between polymer and gas,and rheology of CO2/polymers melt.CO2-induced changes in these properties could be used to realize the supercritical CO2-assisted polymer processing,e.g.,CO2-assisted polymer grafting,CO2-assisted penetrating of small molecules into polymer and CO2-assisted polymer foaming.Several cases from the authors' laboratory are presented for elucidating how to use the changes to manipulate the CO2-assisted polymer processing.The cases include CO2-induced crystallization of isotactic polypropylene and syndiotactic polypropylene,CO2-induced crystal phase transition of isotactic poly-1-butene,and how to use CO2-induced crystallization to manipulate melt strength of three linear polymers,i.e.,isotactic polypropylene, poly(lactic acid)and poly(ethylene terephthalate),to prepare the polymer foams with different structures.

Abstract:The unique stere-complex crystal formed by poly(ʟ-lactide)/poly(ᴅ-lactide) (PLLA/PDLA) has a significant impact on properties of poly-lactide materials and is considered an effective means to improve the barrier properties of poly-lactide (PLA). In this work, poly-lactide films with different aggregate structures were prepared and the relationship of aggregate structure and barrier properties were explored. The results show that the crystal structure including crystallinity and crystal forms can be controlled by adjusting the isothermal crystallization time and crystallization temperature during the molding process. PLLA/PDLA composite films contain both homochiral crystallites and stereo-complex crystallites, and there is a synergistic crystallization effect between the two of them, which provides the composite films with high crystallinity and excellent barrier properties. Compared to the PLLA with homochiral crystallites, the PLLA/PDLA composite film with only stereo-complex crystallites exhibits higher barrier properties. The linear correlation between the crystallinity and the barrier properties is weak due to the changes in crystallization behavior and then the structure of poly-lactide caused by stereo-complexation. The linear correlation between the crystallinity and the barrier properties of the blend film is strong in the low crystallinity but weak at high crystallinity. Compared to homochiral crystallites, stereo-complex crystallites exhibits lower crystallinity dependence. It has been proven that different crystal forms have different design ideas for preparing high-barrier films, but the stereo-complexation resulting from the intermolecular forces between PLLA and PDLA having complementary chemical structure, is an effective method for enhancing the barrier performances of poly-lactide sustainably.

Abstract:The supercritical CO2 (sc-CO2) provided a moderate condition to make the amorphous CO2/poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) mixtures at 30 MPa and 40 degrees C. The crystal is obtained directly after treating CO2/PEEK mixture from 70 to 240 degrees C. The crystallization behavior of CO2/PEEK mixtures before and after treatment is investigated in detail by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. DSC curves of CO2/PEEK samples showed the double cold crystallization peaks. The lower cold crystallization peak moves to higher temperature with the content of CO2 decreasing, and the higher cold crystallization peak keeps their temperatures at about 172 degrees C without a remarkable change. The dynamic mechanical spectrometry was also introduced to explain the relaxation behavior of the glass transition and crystallization. (C) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Homo-crystallization and melting behavior of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) with poly(D-lactic acid) (PDLA) (<= 10 wt.%) was studied. The different thermal history had been applied to exert structural variation on stereocomplex (SC). The PLLA/PDLA blend showed different crystallization and melting behavior when cooled from 250 degrees C or 200 degrees C. Double melting peaks were observed after the blend was cooled from 250 degrees C. SC annealing at different temperatures exhibited significant effect for melt-crystallization of PLLA. Influence of initial melting condition before cooling was also investigated. The cold crystallization of amorphous blend initially was studied and some novel results had been observed.
Cold Crystallization and Postmelting Crystallization of Pla Plasticized by Compressed Carbon Dioxide

Abstract:The cold crystallization at temperature T(cc) (melting > T(cc) > glass transition) and the postmelting crystallization of polylactic acid plasticized by compressed carbon dioxide (CO(2)) were studied using a high-pressure differential scanning calorimeter. The kinetics of the two kinds of crystallization were evaluated by the Avrami equation as a function of pressure at certain temperatures. The effects of using tale as a nucleation agent on the two types of crystallization under pressure were also investigated. The results show that compressed CO(2) increased the mobility of the polymer chains in solid state, resulting in an increased rate of cold crystallization. The decreased rate of postmelting crystallization was mainly in the nucleation-controlled region, which indicates that the number of nuclei was decreased by the compressed CO(2). The growth rate of the two crystallization types followed the Avrami equation, but the kinetics of each depended upon temperature and pressure. Abstract:A series of long-chain branched polylactide (LCB PLA)/poly(D-lactic acid) (PDLA) blends with different low amounts of PDLA were prepared by a solution blending method. The formation of stereocomplex (SC) crystallites in LCB PLA/PDLA blends during a quenching process was proved by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic rheological frequency sweep, and the content of SC crystallites increased as the PDLA composition increased. The morphological evolution of LCB PLA/PDLA blends during crystallization at 130 degrees C was traced by polarized optical microscopy (POM), disclosing the separate growths of SC crystallites and PLA homocrystallites. The crystallization kinetics of LCB PLA/PDLA blends was investigated by rheometry, which was accelerated dramatically with increasing PDLA composition mainly due to the nucleation density enhancement. In particular, a two-stage crystallization process was found for LCB PLA/PDLA blends with PDLA compositions of 5 and 10 wt %, evidenced by the two plateaus in the storage modulus-time curves, which were apparently related to the existence of an LCB structure. The DSC result further confirmed that both SC crystallites and homocrystallites of PLA coexisted in LCB PLA/PDLA blends, with homocrystallites appearing much later as compared to SC crystallites, even after the complete crystallization of SC crystallites.

Abstract:Effect of the addition of poly(D-lactic acid) (PDLA) as stereocomplex (SC) on crystallization behavior of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) had been systemically investigated. The result indicated that the inclusion of PDLA with higher MW into PLLA exhibited lower t(1/2) and showed accelerated crystallization behavior. Meanwhile, SC formed in blends with higher MW of PDLA exhibited enhanced nucleation activity. In combination with both DSC and WAXD analysis, it was believed that nucleation process was more related to the crystalline size of SC. The result in this study would provide guidance for the application of SC as nucleating agent for the PLA-based products.

Abstract:The crystallization behavior of long-chain branched (LCB) polypropylene (PP) in the supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) atmosphere was investigated to show the influences of LCB and CO2 on the formation of gamma-crystal. The crystallization experiments were performed in CO2 atmosphere with the pressure from 1.3 to 10.4 MPa and temperature between 90 and 130 degrees C. The effects of LCB level, CO2 pressure, and crystallization temperature on the content of gamma-crystal were investigated. The results showed that the influence of LCB on the formation of gamma-crystal was obvious when PP was crystallized in CO2. The content of gamma-crystal increased with LCB level and reached a maximum of 88.2%. It could be explained that, as LCB increased the chainfolding energy of PP molecular chain and hindered it from folding back into crystal lamella, which made the formation of gamma-crystal easier. However, CO2 was the key factor in the formation of gamma-crystal, and the influence of CO2 on T-crystal was much significant than that of LCB. It was believed that the increase of free volume after dissolving Of CO2 in PP was helpful in the formation of gamma-crystal. It was found that the content of gamma-crystal increased almost linearly with CO2 pressure (CO2 content), and the contribution of CO2 to gamma-crystal increased with pressure, while that of LCB increased with temperature. Abstract:Atomic force microscopy (AFM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and differential scanning calorimetry are used to analyze the crystallization morphology and melting behavior of 4-arm PEO-b-PCL under high-pressure CO2. It is demonstrated that CO2 has certain effect on the melting and crystallization behavior of the samples. After crystallization under CO2 at 4 MPa, spherulites with concentric ring-banded structure are formed which are composed of crystals with periodic thickness variation, and the band distance decreases with increasing treatment pressure. Effect of oligolactic acid stereocomplex microplates as rapid crystallization nucleating agents on the properties of poly(L‐lactic acid)

Abstract:Enhancing crystallization of poly(L‐lactic acid) via oligolactic acid stereocomplex microplates. An efficient and scalable method to prepare oligolactic acid stereocomplex microplates (SC‐OLA‐MPs) is developed. Oligolactic acid was firstly synthesized via the melt polycondensation of lactic acid. Then, the oligo (L‐lactic acid) and oligo (D‐lactic acid) were crystallized with a mixture of dichloromethane and acetone, and consequently the stereocomplex microparticles were obtained in the form of circular microplates with a diameter of approximately 2 μm. As an eco‐friendly nucleating agent, SC‐OLA‐MPs were introduced into poly (L‐lactic acid) (PLLA) via melt blending. The nonisothermal and isothermal crystallization of the SC‐OLA‐MPs/PLLA composites were investigated, and the crystal morphology and heterogeneous nucleation phenomena during the isothermal crystallization process were photographed with POM. SC‐OLA‐MPs show excellent nucleating effects on PLLA crystallization. With the incorporation of 10% SC‐OLA‐MPs, the crystallization half‐time of the SC‐OLA‐MPs/PLLA composite decreased from 7.18 to 0.45 min at 100°C, compared to the neat PLLA. Through a short‐time molding procedure, the thermal deformation temperature of PLLA is improved by the addition of SC‐OLA‐MPs. Highlights Polylactic acid stereocomplex microplates were fabricated by solution crystallization. This method is easy and scalable. This microplate is an effective nucleating agent for PLLA.
