Abstract:Aqueous rechargeable zinc-iodine batteries (ARZIBs), as a powerful energy alternative, have inherent advantages such as low cost, good safety, and environmental friendliness. Unfortunately, uneven Zn deposition with the dendrite growth and undesirable side reactions seriously compromise the safety and stability of ARZIBs. Herein, a novel strategy is demonstrated to fabricate highly conductive Iota-carrageenan gel electrolyte. The unique double helix structure with good mechanical properties provides favorable Zn 2+ channels guided by sulfate groups, which endow to confine and orderly guide the Zn deposition. Additionally, the activity of water molecules confined in the gel electrolyte is reduced at the solid-solid interface, thus inhibiting the corrosion reactions of zinc electrode. As a result, such gel electrolyte with a remarkable ionic conductivity (42.95 mS cm -1 ) showed a good cycling stability over 1000 h. Importantly, the Zn-I 2 batteries with the IC-Zn gel electrolyte demonstrated a remarkable reversibility with an impressive capacity retention (91.9%) during 5000 cycles and high average CE (99.86%). This work provides a reliable strategy to develop natural polymer gel electrolytes and regulate the Zn deposition for advanced rechargeable Zn-I 2 batteries.

Cation-Conduction Dominated Hydrogels for Durable Zinc-Iodine Batteries

Abstract:Zinc-iodine batteries have the potential to offer high energy-density aqueous energy storage, but their lifetime is limited by the rampant dendrite growth and the concurrent parasite side reactions on the Zn anode, as well as the shuttling of polyiodides. Herein, a cation-conduction dominated hydrogel electrolyte is designed to holistically enhance the stability of both zinc anode and iodine cathode. In this hydrogel electrolyte, anions are covalently anchored on hydrogel chains, and the major mobile ions in the electrolyte are restricted to be Zn2+. Specifically, such a cation-conductive electrolyte results in a high zinc ion transference number (0.81) within the hydrogel and guides epitaxial Zn nucleation. Furthermore, the optimized Zn2+ solvation structure and the reconstructed hydrogen bond networks on hydrogel chains contribute to the reduced desolvation barrier and suppressed corrosion side reactions. On the iodine cathode side, the electrostatic repulsion between negative sulfonate groups and polyiodides hinders the loss of the iodine active material. This all-round electrolyte design renders zinc-iodine batteries with high reversibility, low self-discharge, and long lifespan.

Abstract:Aqueous rechargeable zinc-iodine batteries are emerging high-safety and cost-effective technology for large-scale energy storage. However, the high solubility of discharge species polyiodide in aqueous electrolyte is the major challenge for iodine cathode. Herein, the polyiodide doped conductive polymer cathode is proposed to suppress the dissolution of active materials in electrolyte. High reversible capacity of 160 mAh/g and remarkable cycling stability with capacity retention of 79% after 700 cycles at 1.5 A/g are achieved.

Abstract:Zinc (Zn) metal anode has been widely evaluated in aqueous Zn batteries. Nevertheless, the dendrite formation issue and consecutive side reactions severely impede the practical applications of Zn metal at high current densities. Herein, it is reported that engineering the gel electrolyte with multifunctional charged groups by incorporating a zwitterionic gel poly(3-(1-vinyl-3-imidazolio) propanesulfonate) (PVIPS) can effectively address the abovementioned issues. The charged groups of sulfonate and imidazole in the gel electrolyte can texture the Zn2+ nucleation and deposition plane to (002), which possesses a high activation energy to resist side reactions and induce uniform growth of Zn metal for a dendrite-free structure. In addition, the Zn2+ solvation structure can be manipulated by the charged groups to further eliminate side reactions for high rate performance Zn batteries. Consequently, the polyzwitterionic gel electrolyte enables a stable cycling with a cumulative capacity of 3000 mA h cm-2 at high density of 7.5 mA cm-2 for the symmetrical Zn battery, and a long-term cycling life for more than 1000 cycles at 5 C of Zn/MnO2 full battery. It is envisioned that the design of the gel electrolyte will provide promising feasibility on safe, flexible, and wearable energy storage devices.

Abstract:Abstract Progress towards the integration of technology into living organisms requires power devices that are biocompatible and mechanically flexible. Aqueous zinc ion batteries that use hydrogel biomaterials as electrolytes have emerged as a potential solution that operates within biological constraints; however, most of these batteries feature inferior electrochemical properties. Here, we propose a biocompatible hydrogel electrolyte by utilising hyaluronic acid, which contains ample hydrophilic functional groups. The gel-based electrolyte offers excellent anti-corrosion ability for zinc anodes and regulates zinc nucleation/growth. Also, the gel electrolyte provides high battery performance, including a 99.71% Coulombic efficiency, over 5500 hours of long-term stability, improved cycle life of 250 hours under a high zinc utilization rate of 80%, and high biocompatibility. Importantly, the Zn//LiMn 2 O 4 pouch cell exhibits 82% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 3 C. This work presents a promising gel chemistry that controls zinc behaviour, offering great potential in biocompatible energy-related applications and beyond.

Abstract:Bottlenecks such as electrolyte leakage, zinc dendrite growth, and poor mechanical properties severely limit practical application of aqueous zinc ion batteries. To improve the cycle stability and reversibility of zinc deposition in zinc ion batteries, a ternary cross-linked gel electrolyte PCS composed of polyacrylamide, carboxymethyl cellulose and soluble starch was designed. The solid ternary cross-linked structure provides excellent mechanical properties of PCS gel. The interaction of polar groups with H 2 O and Zn 2+ significantly reduced the activity of the mobilized water in PCS, inhibiting the occurrence of side reactions, and regulating the solvation structure of Zn 2+ . As a result, the cells with PCS have ultra-long-life reversible zinc deposition (stable cycling of Zn//Zn symmetric cells over 4900 h), high reversibility (coulombic efficiency of 99.5%) and high cycling stability (cycling stably for 1000 cycles).

Abstract:Rechargeable Zinc metal batteries have emerged as promising next-generation energy storage devices, attributed to their affordability, abundant availability, and high safety profile. However, aqueous Zinc anodes encounter challenges such as dendrite formation and electrolyte corrosion. This study addresses these challenges by introducing a biopolymer-based hydrogel electrolyte. The electrolyte is a gelatin (G) hydrogel, enriched with x% β-cyclodextrin (D) grafted onto chitosan (C), designated as G(DC) x . It ensures efficient and uniform Zn 2+ ion transport through ionic channels to the zinc anode surface, facilitating the formation of parallel, densely arrayed Zn platelets on the anode. This arrangement minimizes the electrolyte-zinc interface area, mitigating interfacial side reactions and preventing dead zinc formation. The enhanced gelatin network endows the hydrogel electrolyte with considerable mechanical strength (1.49 MPa) and extensive stretchability (400 %), effectively inhibiting dendrite growth and penetration. Additionally, the electrolyte demonstrates excellent ionic conductivity at 24.89 mS cm −1 and a notable transference number of 0.49, synergistically improving the zinc anode's cycling reversibility and lifespan. Symmetric cells using G(DC) 2 electrolytes exhibit remarkable cycling stability, exceeding 1200 h at 1 mA cm −2 /1 mA h cm −2 . Zn-I 2 full cells with G(DC) 2 hydrogel electrolyte show superior cycling performance, maintaining over 300 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 while retaining excellent mechanical properties. The hydrogel electrolytes, degrading by 85 % in weight within 28 days, also exhibit excellent biodegradability in soil. Consequently, these renewable and biodegradable G(DC) x electrolytes present a viable alternative to liquid electrolytes, paving the way for safer, more stable, and eco-friendly zinc metal batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion battery suffers poor cycling stability due to uneven Zn 2+ deposition and serious dendrite growth. To effectively protect the Zn metal anode, diglyme (G2) is added as the co-solvent. Adding G2 can reconstruct the Zn 2+ solvation structure and reduce the water molecule content of [Zn(H2O)6] 2+ sheath. Theoretical calculations confirm that by adding G2, the triflate group OTF − ion shows greater interaction with Zn, and the water molecules from the [Zn(H2O)6] 2+ solvation structure are replaced by OTF − ions. Benefitted from this, an organic-inorganic SEI layer is formed on the Zn anode, which isolates the Zn anode from the bulk electrolyte, and allows/suppresses Zn 2+ diffusion. As well, Zn corrosion and side reactions are inhibited in this system. This co-solvent electrolyte system has a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.7%. A long cycling life of 1000 cycles with capacity retention of 80% is demonstrated by Zn//iodine (I 2 ) - Activated Carbon (AC) full cell at room temperature. Even under a low-temperature condition (−18 °C), Zn//I 2 - AC full cell shows a long lifespan of 1000 cycles with capacity retention of 65%. This work demonstrates a new direction and unparalleled insight into electrolyte engineering with solvation structure regeneration and SEI player formation for aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Single-Ion Conducting Double-Network Hydrogel Electrolytes for Long Cycling Zinc-Ion Batteries.

Abstract:As one of the promising alternatives of lithium-ion batteries, zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have received growing interest from researchers due to their good safety, eco-friendliness, and low cost. Nevertheless, aqueous ZIBs are still a step away from practical applications due to the nonuniform deposition of Zn and parasitic side reactions, which cause capacity fading and even short circuit. To tackle these problems, here we introduce a single-Zn-ion conducting hydrogel electrolyte (SIHE), P(ICZn-AAm), synthesized with iota carrageenan (IC) and acrylamide (AAm). The SIHE manifests single Zn2+ conductivity via the abundant sulfates fixed on the IC polymer backbone, delivering a high Zn2+ transference number of 0.93. It also exhibits outstanding ionic conductivity of 2.15 × 10-3 S cm-1 at room temperature. The enhanced compatibility at the electrode-electrolyte interface was verified by the stable Zn striping/plating performance along with a homogenous and smooth Zn deposition layer. It is also found that the passivation of the Zn anode can be effectively prohibited due to the lack of free anions in the electrolyte. The practical performance of the SIHE is further investigated with Zn-V2O5 batteries, which showed a stable capacity of 271.6 mA h g-1 over 150 cycles at 2 C and 127.5 mA h g-1 over 500 cycles at 5 C.

Abstract:A competitive solvation structure strategy is proposed to further immobilize free water molecules and construct an organic/anion‐derived solid electrolyte interphase for dendrite‐free and long lifespan zinc ion batteries, providing an emerging strategy toward practical energy storage systems. Aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) are troubled by the severe Zn dendrite growth and side reactions, manifesting as low coulombic efficiency and poor cyclic stability. Electrolyte engineering is regarded as an efficient method to improve Zn metal reversibility. Herein, a distinctive electrolyte regulation strategy is demonstrated for long‐lasting ZIBs through the construction of competitive solvation structures. In the composite aqueous system, the insoluble LiNO3 in dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is introduced to outwit active water dissociation from Zn2+ coordination environment, and the organic/anion‐enriched solvation structure enables the formation of a stable interface to effectively restrain adverse reactions. Distinctly, the Zn metal anode exhibits inhibited dendrite growth with high reversibility of plating/stripping processes over 1600 h with an exceptional cumulative capacity over 16 Ah cm−2, an ultra‐long lifespan over high‐temperature (50 °C), and high discharge of depth (65%). Furthermore, the Zn || V2O5 full battery can operate stably over 1000 cycles at 1 A g−1. This work points a direction to effectively solve the major challenges of ZIBs through the collaborative construction of a regulated electrolyte environment and interfacial chemistry.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) have emerged as a promising battery technology due to their excellent safety, high capacity, low cost, and eco-friendliness. However, the cycle life of AZIBs is limited by severe side reactions and zinc dendrite growth on the zinc electrode surface, hindering large-scale application. Here, an electrolyte optimization strategy utilizing the simplest dipeptide glycylglycine (Gly-Gly) additive is first proposed. Theoretical calculations and spectral analysis revealed that, due to the strong interaction between the amino group and Zn atoms, Gly-Gly preferentially adsorbs on zinc's surface, constructing a stable and adaptive interfacial layer that inhibits zinc side reactions and dendrite growth. Furthermore, Gly-Gly can regulate zinc ion solvation, leading to a deposition mode shift from dendritic to lamellar and limiting two-dimensional dendrite diffusion. The symmetric cell with the addition of a 20 g/L Gly-Gly additive exhibits a cycle life of up to 1100 h. Under a high current density of 10 mA cm−2, a cycle life of 750 cycles further demonstrates the reliable adaptability of the interfacial layer. This work highlights the potential of Gly-Gly as a promising solution for improving the performance of AZIBs.

Abstract:The domain‐limited Zn ion‐based anhydrous gel polymer electrolytes (GPE) containing catalytic ions are constructed successfully. It plays a synergistic optimization role and simultaneously inhibits hydrogen evolution, by‐product formation and zinc dendrite growth. Copper ions as catalytic centers are introduced into a gel polymer framework to accelerate interfacial charge transfer and the deposition and transfer of Zn2+ ion. The practicality of zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs) is compromise seriously because of the mutual restrictions of hydrogen evolution, by‐product formation and zincdendrite growth. Herein, anhydrous gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) with catalytic ions and in situdomain‐constrained zinc ions are designed. Innovatively, copper ions are confined in the network structure of the gel for accelerating the deposition and migration kinetics of zinc ions. Not only does this anhydrous GPEs exhibit strong mechanicaland thermal properties, but it also presents a high ionic conductivity (24.32 mS cm−1) and a high zinc ion transference number (0.42). Consequently, the anhydrous GPEs is capable of stable cycling of symmetrical Zn cells at 1 mA cm−2 with acumulative capacity of 1000 mAh cm−2 and maintaines a high discharge specific capacity of 124.6 mAh g−1 after 1000 long‐term cycles of the Zn‐MnO2 battery (ZMB) at 1 °C. The synergistic catalytic strategy of composite gel opens new opportunities for a promising pathway to facilitate the large‐scale application of ZIBs with hydrogel electrolytes.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc‐ion batteries have become a promising energy storage battery due to high theoretical specific capacity, abundant zinc resources and low cost. However, zinc dendrite growth and hydrogen evolution reaction limit their application. This study aims to improve the cycling performance and stability of aqueous zinc‐ion batteries by improving the gel electrolyte. Polyacrylamide (PAM) is selected as the base material of the gel electrolyte, which has good stability and safety, but the water retention capacity, Zn2+ migration number, and ionic conductivity of PAM are low, which affects the long‐term stability of the battery. In response to these problems, we optimized PAM by chemical cross‐linking method, and formed an enhanced PAM gel by adding disodium citrate dihydrate (SC). Experimental results show that the introduction of an appropriate amount of SC in the enhanced PAM gel electrolyte can significantly improve its electrochemical performance. The zinc‐ion symmetric battery achieved a stable cycle of more than 2100 hours at a current density of 0.5 mA cm‐2, which is mainly attributed to the inhibitory effect of the enhanced PAM gel on zinc dendrite growth and hydrogen evolution reaction. This study provides a new direction for the development and application of flexible zinc‐ion batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous Zn-based batteries have been regarded as a promising energy storage system due to their high energy/power density, safety, and cost-effectiveness. However, their performance have been severely hindered by the dendrite growth of zinc and water-induced side reactions. Herein, a facial strategy of electrolyte modification with a high concentration of zinc sulfate and lithium iodide (LiI) as additives is proposed to guide the preferential growth along with the Zn (002) plane for the smooth Zn deposition. Compared to the pure zinc sulfate electrolyte, the Zn anode in the modified electrolyte exhibited the ultralong cycling stability for 3000 h at a capacity of 1 mAh cm−2 and 400 h at a higher capacity of 5 mAh cm−2, with low reversible deposition potentials of around 30 and 40 mV, respectively, demonstrating the stable plating/stripping behaviors. More importantly, the cycling stability of the Zn–I2 battery with the modified electrolyte can still deliver a large specific capacity after 5000 cycles. The strategy presented that the LiI as additive could not only provide an iodine-rich environment to induce the preferential growth of Zn (002) plane, but also eliminate the side corrosion reactions with the help of additional Li-ions, thus leading to the high-performing Zn–I2 battery.

Abstract:Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are receiving increasing research attention due to their high energy density, resource abundance, low-cost, intrinsic high-safety properties, and the appropriate plating/stripping voltage. Gel-state electrolytes possess merits of having a wide electrochemical window, good flexibility, superior water retainability, and excellent compatibility with aqueous electrolytes, which makes them potential candidates for flexible batteries. However, the practical applications of ZIBs with gel-state electrolytes still have some issues of water content easily dropping, poor mechanical stability, and the interface problem. Therefore, the application of hydrogel-based, self-healing gel, gel polymer, thermos-reversible, and other additional functions of gel electrolytes in ZIBs are discussed in this review. Following that, the design of multi-functional gel-state electrolytes for ZIBs is proposed. Finally, the prospect and the challenges of this type of battery are described.

Abstract:A "compact‐water layer in the bulk‐water" structure is constructed by adding sodium polystyrene sulfonate polymers into aqueous electrolytes. This additive not only improves ionic transfer rate, but also suppresses water decomposition via its preferred absorption, inhibits dendrite formation by an electrostatic shielding effect, and constructs a high‐quality solid electrolyte interphase by changing the coordination environment of ions. As a promising candidate for next‐generation energy storage devices, Zn metal battery excels with their good safety, high specific capacity, and economic attractiveness. However, it still suffers from a narrow electrochemical window, notorious dendrite formation, and sluggish Zn ion transfer. Aqueous electrolyte engineering has been regarded as an effective way to improve these. It is shown that by adding sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) polymers into a dilute 1 m Zn(OTf)2 aqueous electrolyte, compact water shells with stronger hydrogen bonding and more ordered structures are formed around the polymer chains. As a result, a fast transport channel to the zinc ions is provided. The PSS chains also protect the zinc electrode from directly contacting the water molecules and thus suppress water decomposition. With these merits, a Zn//Cu cell demonstrates a high coulombic efficiency of ≈99% after 1500 h cycling. Meanwhile, a record‐high cumulative Zn plating capacity of 10 000 mA h cm−2 is obtained using a Zn||Zn cell. In addition, the Zn//C@V2O5 full cell achieves almost 100% capacity retention after 1000 cycles. This work provides a new strategy for designing advanced electrolyte systems excelling in ion transport kinetics.

Abstract:The zinc-iodine flow batteries are promising candidates for large-scale electrochemical energy storage with its high energy density, safety, and low-cost features. However, the limited utilization of iodine species by liberating I- for stabilizing I2 and severe anodic dendrite growth are still seriously challenging the real battery performance and lock its commercialization potentials. Herein, we report a unique ternary hydrated eutectic electrolyte based on zinc bromide and acetamide to manipulate the solvent structure and realize the favorable interface engineering at both electrodes simultaneously. Specifically, solvating Br- in the sheath with Zn2+ facilitate the formation of strong halogen bond that could stabilize the elemental iodine effectively, and then enhance the I-/I2Br- conversion kinetics and reversibility with the iodine reutilization efficiency reach to almost 100%. Simultaneously, such bifunctional hydrated eutectic electrolyte also could greatly minimize the hydrogen evolution side reactions and direct uniform electrodeposition to suppress the anodic dendrite growth. As expected, the electrochemical performance of the designed flow cell is remarkably enhanced, delivering a specific capacity and energy density of 200 Ah Lcatholyte-1 and 283 Wh Lcatholyte-1 at 20 mA cm-2, and maintaining a high energy efficiency of 83% even after 1200 hours of extended operation.

Abstract:Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are regarded as promising power sources for flexible and biocompatible devices due to their good sustainability and high intrinsic safety. However, their applications have been hindered by the issues of uncontrolled zinc dendrite growth and water-induced side reactions in conventional liquid electrolytes. Herein, an ionically crosslinked composite hydrogel electrolyte based on natural biomacromolecules, including iota-carrageenan and sodium alginate, is designed to promote highly efficient and reversible Zn plating/stripping. The abundant functional groups of the macromolecules effectively suppress the reactivity of water molecules and facilitate uniform Zn deposition. Moreover, the composite hydrogel electrolyte exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 5.89×10-2 S cm-1 and a Zn2+ transference number of 0.58. Consequently, the Zn||Zn symmetric cell with the composite hydrogel electrolyte shows a stable cycle life of more than 500 h. Meanwhile, the Zn||NH4V4O10 coin cell with the composite hydrogel electrolyte retains a high specific capacity of approximately 200 mA h g-1 after 600 cycles at 2 A g-1. The Zn||NVO pouch cell based on the hydrogel electrolyte also showed a high specific capacity of 246.1 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 and retained 70.7% of its initial capacity after 150 cycles. The pouch cell worked well at different bending angles and exhibited a capacity retention rate of 98% after returning to the initial state from 180°-folding. This work aims to construct high-performance hydrogel electrolytes by using low-cost natural materials, which may provide a solution for the application of ZIBs in flexible biocompatible devices.
