Abstract:Over recent decades, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) molecules have attracted increasing attention. Restriction of intramolecular rotation (RIR) has been widely accepted as the cause of the emission when AIE molecules aggregate into clusters. The intramolecular rotation of AIE molecules can be monitored by molecular vibration spectra such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared, and Raman, especially surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) which has high sensitivity down to a single molecule. We employed SERS and NMR to study the AIE emission mechanism and compared experimental results with simulation data to monitor the RIR. Interestingly, we found that intramolecular rotation was also restricted for individual AIE molecules loaded onto SERS substrate surfaces due to the laid-down configuration.

Abstract:In this work, we address a mechanistic issue on AIE process and correct a long-held misconception on stilbene photoluminescence. E-Z isomerisation has been generally recognized as the cause of emission quenching in stilbene solutions. A natural question arisen from this common belief is whether suppression of E-Z isomerisation by aggregate formation in a stilbenic fluorogen system is responsible for its AIE phenomenon. Monitoring of the structural change of a stilbene derivative named 1,2-diphenyl-1,2-di(p-tolyl)ethene by NMR during UV irradiation reveals that the E-Z isomerisation is not involved in its AIE process under the normal photoluminescence spectral measurement conditions.

Abstract:Aggregation of classical fluorophores always quenches their light emission, which is notoriously known as aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ). The ACQ effect prevents many fluorophores from finding aggregation-state applications. In contrast, a group of fluorophores is weakly luminescent or even nonluminescent in isolated state but highly emissive in aggregate state. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) was coined for this novel phenomenon. Because of their unique advantages, more and more new AIE systems with emission colors covering the entire visible spectral region were developed by numerous research groups. Their applications as solid-state emitters and chemo/bio-sensors were explored widely and deeply. Deciphering the working principle of the AIE phenomenon is of great value in terms of helping gain new photophysical insights and guide further efforts in the development of new AIE materials with high luminescence efficiencies. However, whilst the mature theories to explain the ACQ effect had been written into textbooks, the "abnormal" AIE phenomenon still poses a challenge to our current understanding of solid-state luminescence. In this review, we summarize the accessible mechanisms for the AIE phenomenon, such as restricted intramolecular rotation (RIR), intramolecular coplanarization, inhibition intramolecular photochemical or photophysical process, relatively loose molecular packing, J-aggregate formation, and special excimer formation. Particularly, we emphasize on the description of RIR mechanism, which is the most universal and best studied one among the proposed mechanisms. In addition, some new AIE systems based on these mechanisms are introduced briefly.
Engineering Au Nanoclusters for Relay Luminescence Enhancement with Aggregation-Induced Emission

Abstract:The research of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has been growing rapidly for the design of highly luminescent materials, as exemplified by the library of AIE-active materials (or AIEgens) fabricated and explored for diverse applications in different fields. Herein, we reported a relay luminescence enhancement of luminescent Au nanoclusters (Au NCs) through AIE. In addition, we demonstrated the emergence of reduced aggregation-caused luminescence by adjusting the temperature of the Au NC solution. The key to induce this effect is to attach a thermosensitive polymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) on the surface of Au NCs, which will shrink at high temperature. More interestingly, the as-synthesized Au NCs-PNIPAAm can self-assemble into vesicles, resulting in an obvious decrease in the luminescence intensity in aqueous solution. The combination of relay luminescence enhancement (by AIE) and luminescence decrease (induced by thermosensitive polymers) will be beneficial to the understanding and manipulation of the optical properties of Au NCs, paving the way for their practical applications.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is an effective strategy for improving the photoluminescence (PL) performance of metal nanoclusters (MNCs). However, the origin of AIE in MNCs is still not fully understood, which is pivotal for the design of AIE luminogens (AIEgens). Here, water soluble silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) with AIE properties were synthesized. These as-synthesized non-luminescent Ag NCs will become photoluminescent when transferred from water to ethanol, and the emission peak was redshifted from ∼560 to ∼600 nm and largely intensified with the addition of Cu2+. The addition of Cu2+ makes a big difference in the PL properties of Ag NCs. That is, the PL will be enhanced if Cu2+ is added with the sequence “Ag NCs + Cu2++EtOH.” In contrast, the PL will be quenched if Cu2+ is added with the sequence “Ag NCs + EtOH + Cu2+.” The PL was from the supramolecular clusters formed by the assembly of capping ligands on the confined surface of individual silver clusters through weak interactions. The addition of Cu2+ could regulate the assembly structure and further affect the energy lever (p-band) through space electron interactions. These results provide new insights into the AIE process in metal nanoclusters.

Abstract:<p>Aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) refers to a photophysical effect that the luminescence of aggregates is stronger than that of the dispersed state. Since the concept of AIE was coined by Professor Ben Zhong Tang and co‐workers in 2001, AIE has evolved from a simple luminescent phenomenon to a multidisciplinary research field with a widespread influence. It has changed people's way of thinking about chromophore aggregation and greatly promoted the development of advanced luminescent materials. During the 20‐year development, diverse AIE luminogens (AIEgens) with attractive functionalities have been developed and remarkable achievements have been made in the mechanistic study and high‐tech applications of AIEgens. In this review, we provide an overview of the historical development and representative achievements of AIE research. Perspectives on the application of AIE in aggregate science are also briefly discussed to guide the future development in this field.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Deep understanding of the inherent luminescence mechanism is essential for the development of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials and applications. We first note that the intermolecular excitonic coupling is much weaker in strength than the intramolecular electron-vibration coupling for a majority of newly termed AIEgens, which leads to the emission peak position insensitive to excitonic coupling, hence the conventional excitonic model for J-aggregation cannot effectively explain their AIE phenomena. Then, using multiscale computational approach coupled with our self-developed thermal vibration correlation function rate formalism and transition-state theory, we quantitatively investigate the aggregation effect on both the radiative and the nonradiative decays of molecular excited states. For radiative decay processes, we propose that the lowest excited state could convert from a transition dipole-forbidden "dark" state to a dipole-allowed "bright" state upon aggregation. For the radiationless processes, we demonstrate the blockage of nonradiative decay via vibration relaxation (BNR-VR) in harmonic region or the removal of nonradiative decay via isomerization (RNR-ISO) or minimum energy crossing point (RNR-MECP) beyond harmonic region in a variety of AIE aggregates. Our theoretical work not only justifies a plethora of experimental results but also makes reliable predictions on molecular design and mechanism that can be experimentally verified. Looking forward, we believe this review will benefit the deep understanding about the universality of AIE phenomenon and further extending the scope of AIE systems with novel applications.

Abstract:To achieve the efficient and precise regulation of aggregation-induced emission (AIE), unraveling the aggregation effects on amorphous AIE luminogens is of vital importance. Using a theoretical protocol combining molecular dynamics simulations and quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations, we explored the relationship between molecular packing, optical spectra and fluorescence quantum efficiency of amorphous AIE luminogens hexaphenylsilole (HPS). We confirmed that the redshifted emission of amorphous aggregates as compared to crystalline HPS is caused by the lower packing density of amorphous HPS aggregates and the reduced restrictions on their intramolecular low-frequency vibrational motions. Strikingly, our calculations revealed the size independent fluorescence quantum efficiency of nanosized HPS aggregates and predicted the linear relationship between the fluorescence intensity and aggregate size. This is because the nanosized aggregates are dominated by embedded HPS molecules which exhibit similar fluorescence quantum efficiency at different aggregate sizes. In addition, our results provided a direct explanation for the crystallization-enhanced emission phenomenon of propeller-shaped AIE luminogens in experiments. Our theoretical protocol is general and applicable to other AIE luminogens, thus laying solid foundation for the rational design of advanced AIE materials.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) as a unique photophysical process has been intensively explored for their features in fields from optical sensing, bioimaging to optoelectronic devices. However, all AIE luminogens (AIEgens) hardly recover into the initial dispersed state after illuminating at the ultimate aggregated state, which limits AIEgens to achieve reversible sensing and reproducible devices. To real-time manipulate the emission of AIEgen, here we take the advantage of confined space in the quartz nanopore to achieve a nanopore-size-dependent restriction of AIEgens for reversible conversions of “on-to-off” and “off-to-on” emission. By electrochemically manipulating 26 fL AIEgen solution inside nanopore confinement, AIE illuminates while moves along nanopore from the constricted tip to inside cavity at a velocity of 1.4–2.2 μm s −1 , and vice versa. We further apply this dynamic manipulation for a target delivery of AIEgen into single cells, which opens up new possibility to design powerful and practical AIE applications.

Abstract:Since the introduction of the concept of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) in 2001, many research groups have become involved in AIE research. Aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) have emerged as a novel type of advanced material with excellent performance in various fields. Much effort has been devoted to determining the AIE mechanism(s) by theoreticians and experimentalists. Restriction of intramolecular motion has been recognized as the general working mechanism of AIE, but the mechanims of some AIE systems still remain unclear. In this focus article, the progress of the fundamental understanding of the AIE mechanism is reviewed and the future developments in AIE research are discussed. The goal is to provide a brief yet insightful introduction and interpretation of the subject to both new and experienced AIE researchers.

Abstract:“United we stand, divided we fall.”–Aesop.Aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) refers to a photophysical phenomenon shown by a group of luminogenic materials that are non‐emissive when they are dissolved in good solvents as molecules but become highly luminescent when they are clustered in poor solvents or solid state as aggregates. In this Review we summarize the recent progresses made in the area of AIE research. We conduct mechanistic analyses of the AIE processes, unify the restriction of intramolecular motions (RIM) as the main cause for the AIE effects, and derive RIM‐based molecular engineering strategies for the design of new AIE luminogens (AIEgens). Typical examples of the newly developed AIEgens and their high‐tech applications as optoelectronic materials, chemical sensors and biomedical probes are presented and discussed.

Abstract:Over the past decade, research studies on solid-state luminescent materials featuring aggregation-induced emission (AIE) have achieved great success. It has been proved that lots of planar ACQ (aggregation-caused quenching) chromophores can be converted to AIE luminogens (AIEgens) by combining with an AIE-active unit such as tetraphenylethene (TPE). In this work, we present a new method to create AIE luminogens just by introducing benzoyl or benzyl to a planar chromophore, pyrene. The generated 1-benzoyl and 1-benzyl pyrene derivatives exhibit weak emission when molecularly dissolved in good solvents but strong emission from pyrene dimers when aggregated in poor solvent or the solid state. Their crystal structure analysis and theoretical calculations are performed to depict the working mechanism of these new AIEgens. The results show that the structural rigidification of these 1-benzoyl pyrene derivatives is the major cause for their AIE effect. This new AIE system along with a clear working mechanism will contribute to the development of AIE-related functional materials and theories.

Abstract:Luminogens with the feature of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) are a class of ‘heterodox’ molecules, whose emissions are brightened by aggregate formation. The restriction of their intramolecular motions in an aggregate state is the main cause of the AIE process. In this account, we summarize recent progress in exploring high-tech applications of AIE luminogens (AIEgens) as biological sensors, chemical probes, optoelectronic devices, and intelligent materials. Our discussion is focused on mechanistic analysis, classifying the electronic interactions involved into three categories: (a) through-bond, (b) through-space, and (c) through-bond and -space conjugations. Such a mechanistic understanding will help guide further development of new AIEgens and their applications.

Abstract:The last decade has witnessed rapid developments in aggregation‐induced emission (AIE). In contrast to traditional aggregation, which causes luminescence quenching (ACQ), AIE is a reverse phenomenon that allows robust luminescence to be retained in aggregated and solid states. This makes it possible to fabricate various highly efficient luminescent materials, which opens new paradigms in a number of fields, such as imaging, sensing, medical therapy, light harvesting, light‐emitting devices, and organic electronic devices. Of the various important features of AIE molecules, their self‐assembly behavior is very attractive because the formation of a well‐defined emissive nanostructure may lead to advanced applications in diverse fields. However, due to the nonplanar topology of AIEgens, it is not easy for them to self‐assemble into well‐defined structures. To date, some strategies have been proposed to achieve the self‐assembly of AIEgens. Herein, we summarize the most recent approaches for the self‐assembly of AIE molecules. These approaches can be sorted into two classes: 1) covalent molecular design and 2) noncovalent supramolecular interactions. We hope this will inspire more excellent work in the field of AIE.
