Abstract:Theoretical studies on anthracene and a series of its derivatives were performed using the AM I method and DFT. Based on B3LYP/6-31G(d) optimized geometries, the electronic, IR and NMR spectra of anthracene oligomers were calculated,using the Indo/Cis, AM1 and B3LYP/6-31G(d) methods, respectively. The energy gaps of the oligomers decreased and the main absorptions in the electronic spectra of the oligomers were red-shifted, whereas the IR frequencies for some of the C=C and C-H bonds were blue-shifted with increasing chain length and in the presence of substituents. The C-13-NMR chemical shifts of the bridged carbon atoms were upfield shifted in the presence of an electron-donating group, while the chemical shifts of the carbon atoms on the two side rings of the anthracene moiety shifted downfield in the presence of an electron-withdrawing group.

Abstract:Theoretical studies of pentacene and a series of its derivatives were performed using the PM3 and DFT methods. Based on B3LYP/6-31G(d) optimized geometries, the electronic, IR, and 13C NMR spectra of the derivatives were calculated using the INDO/CIS, PM3, and B3LYP/6-31G(d) methods, respectively. The energy gaps of the derivatives decreased as the chain length increased and electron-withdrawing substituents were introduced. The polymer based on pentacene, especially in the presence of trimethylsilylacetylene, offers promise as an excellent conducting polymer. The main absorption bands in the electronic spectra of the derivatives compared with those of pentacene were shifted to the red, whereas the IR frequencies for some of the C=C and C-H bonds were shifted to the blue. The 13C chemical shifts of the carbon atoms connected with electron-withdrawing substituents were shifted upfield, while those of the bridged carbon atoms in the middle part of the pentacene unit shifted downfield.

Abstract:The equilibrium geometries and electronic structures for a series of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) modified with phenylene were studied using the density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level. Of the four configurations of the phenylene-modified SWCNTs, the v-configuration in which the bond is perpendicular to the main axis of the SWCNT is the most thermodynamically stable. The increase in radii of the modified SWCNTs generally leads to a decrease in the energy gaps. The first absorptions in the electronic spectra of the modified SWCNTs compared with those in the electronic spectra of pristine SWCNTs are basically red-shifted. The chemical shifts of bridged carbon atoms connected with phenylene in the v-configuration are shifted downfield relative to those of the pristine SWCNTs. The aromaticity of the rings in SWCNTs is improved owing to the addition of phenylene.

Abstract:Electronic absorption and emission data of M(CO)4(phen) complexes, where M=Cr, Mo or W; phen=1,10-phenanthroline are reported using density functional theory (DFT). Electronic absorption spectra of [M(CO)4(phen)] show a strong band in the visible region of the spectrum, whose metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT) M→phen and M→COax character is indicated by high molar absorptivity. This assignment is investigated by theoretical calculations, which differ from the early interplay of M→L metal to ligand charge transfer MLCT and ligand-filed (LF) electronic transitions, occurring between d-orbitals. The phosphorescence of each complex was identified as a lowest, triplet metal to ligand charge transition (MLCT) around 740nm.

Abstract:Anthracene derivatives constitute the active elements in high performance organic semiconductors and in order to find ubiquitous electronics applications, the investigation of new materials with high stability and mobilities is critical. Despite the versatility of substituent groups in anthracene and the extensive research works on anthracene derivatives, the exploration and discovery of high-performance anthracene derivatives can be impeded by the difficulty in molecular designing and synthesis techniques. Theoretical modeling is a powerful instrument and a variety of modeling methods with different accuracy levels have been reported. However, there is no systematic research work on theoretical prediction of the fundamental properties of anthracene derivatives so far. Here, density functional theory calculations are performed on anthracene derivatives to systematically address the prediction accuracy in energy levels as compared to our experimental data and it is shown that the PBE0/6-311G(d,p) is a more cost-effective method. Based on the influence of diverse substituent groups on energy levels, we present a strategy to design high-performance anthracene derivatives with specific energy levels, which are predicted to be excellent candidates for charge transfer materials. Therefore, the strategy may offer a guide for tailoring materials' functional properties via modifications of the molecular units before materials synthesis and open up new possibilities for the discovery of rising organic semiconductors.
Theoretical investigations on the charge transport properties of anthracene derivatives with aryl substituents at the 2,6-position-thermally stable "herringbone" stacking motifs

Abstract:High-performance organic semiconductor materials based on the small aromatic anthracene-core and its derivatives develop comparatively slowly due to the lack of a profound understanding of the influence of chemical modifications on their charge-transfer properties. Herein, the electronic properties and the charge transport characteristics of several typical anthracene-based derivatives with aryl groups substituted at the 2,6-site are systematically investigated by multi-scale simulation methods including Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation and the full quantum nuclear tunneling model in the framework of density functional theory (DFT). To elucidate the origin of different charge transport properties of these anthracene-based materials, analysis of the molecular stacking and noncovalent intermolecular interaction caused by different substituents was carried out. The results indicate that the electron and hole injection capabilities and the air oxidation stability of the anthracene derivatives are greatly improved when the size of the aryl substituent increases. In addition, the incorporation of 2,6-site aryl substituents can inhibit the stretching vibration of the anthracene-core during charge transport, and allow molecular packing along the long axis (a-axis of DPA and BDBFAnt, and c-axis of dNaAnt) with almost no slippage, and the main transport channels remain unchanged, exhibiting more isotropic 2D transport properties. It should be emphasized that the edge-to-face dimers with smallest dihedral angles are closest to the thermally stable dimer model, with relatively larger π-orbital distributions in transmission channels (dimer 1, 2) and the largest spatial overlap, resulting in the largest hole transfer integral in DPA (Vh1/h2 = 57 meV). Although the analysis of the thermal disorder effect shows a phonon scattering effect, the maximum hole mobility of the DPA molecule is still as high as 1.5 cm2 V-1 s-1.

Abstract:We have designed and synthesized five anthracene derivatives using quinoa perch ether and 2-acetaldehyde pyridine or 4-acetaldehyde pyridine as raw material. Five compounds are 2-(9,10- dihydro-2,3,6,7-tetramethoxy-10-(pyridin-2-yl) anthracen-9- yl)pyridine (1), 2-(2,3,6, 7-tetramethoxy-10-(pyridin-2-yl)anthracen-9-yl) pyridine (2), 4-(9,10-dihydro-2,3,6,7 -tetramethoxy-10-(pyridin-4-yl) anthracen-9-yl) pyridine (3), 4-(2,3,6,7-tetramethoxy- 10-(pyridin-4-yl)anthracen-9-yl) pyridine (4), and 4-(2,3,6,7- tetramethoxy-10-(pyridine-4-yl)anthracen-9-yl) pyridine nitrate (5), respectively. Their single crystals were obtained and determined by X-ray diffraction analysis, and their Hirshfeld surface analysis has also been done. Different compounds with different structures can be obtained from the same raw material by changing the reaction conditions and the concentration of acid. Their fluorescence properties also changed greatly. Structural analysis showed that compounds (1) and (3) were chiral compounds. Both C9, C18 in compound (1) and C6, C15 in compound (3) are chiral carbon atoms. However, when compounds (1) and (3) lose their two protons and become compounds (2) and (4), respectively, which can form an π-conjugated system, there are no chiral carbon atoms and have fluorescence. It lays a foundation for the potential applications of these compounds in the future.

Abstract:A novel N-coumarin derivative, namely 9,10-[di-p-(7-diethylamino-coumarin-3-yl) thiopheneyl]anthracene ((CTh)2A), containing anthracene as the core and 3-thiophene N-coumarin as the substituent was synthesized, and its structure was confirmed by 1H NMR and IR spectroscopies. The optical, electrochemical and thermal properties were investigated. Thermogravimetric analysis and PL spectra reveal the high thermal and good photoluminescence characteristics. The coumarin derivative exhibits blue photoluminescence with high fluorescence quantum yield in solution (up to 40%). The results show that the derivative would serve as promising organic light-emitting diode luminescent material.

Abstract:Poly(silanylenediethynylanthracene) (PSDEA) exhibits a hole-transporting ability experimentally. In order to simulate the property of PSDEA, a series of silanylenediethynylanthracene oligomers were designed. The structures of these oligomers were optimized by using density function theory at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level. The energy gaps of the oligomers decrease with the increase in the chain length. The energy gaps of the oligomers also decrease in the presence of the electron-withdrawing group on the anthracene ring. The 13C chemical shifts and nucleus independent chemical shifts (NICS) at the anthracene ring center in the oligomers were calculated at B3LYP/6–31G level. The chemical shifts of the carbon atoms connected with the nitryl group changed upfield, compared with those of the carbon atoms without the nitryl group. The aromaticity at the anthracene ring center decreases in the presence of the electron-withdrawing group, whereas increases with the increase in the number of the silanylene units. The most sensitive location for calculating the NICS values is 0.1 nm above the anthracene plane.

Abstract:Anthracene derivative compounds are currently investigated because of their unique physical properties (e.g., bright luminescence and emission tunability), which make them ideal candidates for advanced optoelectronic devices. Intermolecular interactions are the basis of the tunability of the optical and electronic properties of these compounds, whose prediction and exploitation benefit from the knowledge of the crystal structure and the packing architecture. Polymorphism can occur due to the weak intermolecular interactions, asking for detailed structural analysis clarifying the origin of observed material property modifications. Here, two silylethyne-substituted anthracene compounds are characterized by single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction, identifying a new polymorph. Additionally, laser confocal microscopy and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy confirm the results obtained by the X-ray diffraction characterization, i.e., shifting the substituents towards the external benzene rings of the anthracene unit favours {\pi}-{\pi} interactions, impacting on both the morphology and the microscopic optical properties of the crystals. The compounds with more isolated anthracene units feature shorter lifetime and emission spectra more similar to those ones of isolated molecules. The crystallographic study, supported by the optical investigation, sheds light on the influence of non-covalent interactions on the crystal packing and luminescence properties of anthracene derivatives, providing a further step towards their efficient use as building blocks in active components of light sources and photonic networks.

Abstract:Anthracene, an aromatic compound consisting of three linear fused benzene rings, has the hydrophobic rigid planar structure and the large π-conjugated area. These features ensure the highfluorescence quantum yield, robust photoelectric properties and proclivity to establish ordered supramolecular interactions, which render anthracene as a versatile building block to fabricate functional assemblies. This review focuses on the anthracene-based functional assemblies primarily promoted by covalent and non-covalent linkages, and their potential applications in organic photovoltaic, semiconductor materials, and supramolecular chemistry.

Abstract:Anthracene derivatives are an interesting class of compounds and modifications in the anthracene ring, producing different compounds with different properties. Structural analysis of anthracene derivatives with modifications in position 9,10 of the aromatic ring is necessary in order to obtain information about its properties. The introduction of groups with polar substituents increases the possibility to modify the molecule lipophilicity, corroborating its use as bioimaging probes. Anthracene derivatives are used in many biochemical applications. These compounds can react with molecular singlet oxygen [O2 (1Δg)], a reactive oxygen species, through the Diels–Alder reaction [4 + 2] to form the respective endoperoxide and to be used as a chemical trap in biological systems. Thus, the structural and crystalline characterizations of two anthracene derivatives are presented in this work to obtain information about their physical-chemical properties. The compounds were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyses and scanning electron microscopy. The molecular structures of the compounds were studied by the Density Functional Theory, M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory in the gas phase. From the results obtained for the frontier molecular orbitals, HOMO and LUMO, and from the Molecular Electrostatic Potential map, it was possible to predict the chemical properties of both compounds. The supramolecular arrangements were also theoretically studied, whose molecules were kept fixed in their crystallographic positions, through the natural bonding orbitals analysis to check the stability of interactions and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules to verify the type of intermolecular interaction between their molecules, as well as how they occur.

Abstract:The effect of molecular structure on the photophysical, electronic structure properties of a series of 9 conjugated diphenylanthrazolines were explored by UV–vis adsorption, photoluminescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and quantum chemical calculations. The featureless adsorption bands observed (λAbsmax: 382–420 nm) revealed low optical band gaps (2.05–2.25 eV) and the photoluminescence emission spectra (λEmmax: 480–546 nm) and large Stokes shift (78–148 nm) suggested the presence of excimers in the solid state. With only one exception, the diphenylanthrazolines displayed reversible electrochemical reduction with potentials of −1.03 to −1.40 V, low ionization potentials (∼5.91–6.29 eV), relative to that of a saturated calomel electrode and high electron affinity (∼3.44–3.59 eV). Quantum chemical calculations using DFT B3LYP/6-31G showed nearly identical LUMO (−2.2 ∼ −2.3 eV) and HOMO (−5.2 ∼ −5.6 eV) values, revealing that both the electronic properties and the geometries of the diphenylanthrazolines depended on the anthrazoline backbone.

Abstract:Due to its highly conjugated panel-like structure and unique photophysical and chemical features, anthracene has been widely used for fabricating attractive and functional supramolecular assemblies, including two-dimensional metallacycles and three-dimensional metallacages. The embedded anthracenes in these assemblies often show synergistic effects on enhancing the desired supramolecular and luminescent properties. This review focuses on the metallasupramolecular architectures with anthracene-containing building blocks, as well as their applications in host-guest chemistry, stimulus response, molecular sensing, light harvesting, and biomedical science.

Abstract:Three anthracene derivatives with 2,6-diphenylanthracene core and C-, O-, and S-bridged alkyl chain substituents (BEPAnt, BOPAnt, and BSPAn) exhibit relatively balanced high luminescence and mobility properties, which can be candidates for organic light-emitting transistor device materials. The optoelectronic properties of three anthracene derivatives were investigated by quantum chemistry calculations. The results show that BEPAnt and BOPAnt exhibit high hole mobility (3.60 and 1.35 cm2 V-1 s-1) and blue emission fluorescence quantum yield (>80%). In addition, the growth morphology of crystal/film can affect their properties, especially charge transport behavior, but is often overlooked in theoretical computing. Hence, the morphological evolution of organic thin-film is characterized by the attachment energy (AE) model. The predicted morphologies for BEPAnt and BOPAnt are consistent with the shape of their single-crystal films by physical vapor transport (PVT) technique. The growth thickness and diameter ratios of each BEPAnt crystal facet prove the accuracy of the AE model. Notably, symmetrical hydrogen bond interactions within and between crystal layers facilitate the formation of a large flat film such as BOPAnt, which is conducive to better performance of charge transport properties in the experiment. We hope this study can clearly understand the driving forces that affect the crystal surface growth rate, and then provide valuable guidance for the design and regulation of organic semiconductor molecules with ideal crystal morphology.

Optical Properties of Anthracene Single Crystals Grown by A Simple Solution Technique

Abstract:Large-size and high-quality anthracene single crystals were prepared simply by solution technique. The basal planes correspond to (001) face and two large lateral faces of the anthracene crystals determined to be the (100) plane can also be obtained. The optical properties of the obtained anthracene single crystals were studied. The results indicate that anthracene can be a good window material up to 410 nm as the transmittance of the obtained crystal is around 70% from 800 nm to 410 nm and the band gap energy is 3.02 eV. The dielectric components in x-, y- and z-directions of the obtained crystals were extracted by fitting the results from spectroscopic ellipsometry and the results indicate the dielectric anisotropy of anthracene single crystals. The reflectivity calculated from the permittivity is close to the measured results.

Abstract:The quantum chemical calculation of 9-methylanthracene and 2,3-dimethylanthracene molecules were carried out (9MA and 23DMA). The Density Functional Theory (DFT) by the method RB3LYP with the basis set of 6-311 + G(d) were performed. The Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) spectrum and FT-Raman spectrum of the compounds were recorded in the region 4000–400 cm<sup>−1</sup> and 4000–50 cm<sup>−1</sup>, respectively. The theoretical frequencies were scaled down and compared with experimental FT-IR and FT-Raman spectral values and they agree well. The Natural Bond analysis is performed to gauge the Lewis structure of the molecule. The first order hyperpolarizability values were calculated from the Non-Linear Optical (NLO) studies of the title molecules and compared with standard reference value of Urea. The molecular electrostatic potential surface is obtained and used to get the nucleophilic and electrophilic sites. The molecular docking study for title compound indicates anti cancer properties. Molecules show excellent Light Harvesting Efficiency, hence can be used in DSSC's.

Abstract:14,14'‐Bidibenzo[a,j]anthracenes (BDBAs) were prepared by iridium‐catalyzed annulation of 5,5'‐biterphenylene with alkynes. Overcrowded BDBAs with highly distorted molecular halves and a small interplanar angle between two anthryl moieties (down to approximately 31o, currently the lowest reported value) were verified by X‐ray crystallography. The strong intramolecular interactions and electronic couplingsbetween two molecular halves resulted in upfield 1H NMR signals, redshifted absorption and emission bands, and a reduced HOMO–LUMO gap. Photodynamic investigations on BDBAs indicated that the formation of the conventional symmetry‐breaking charge transfer (SBCT) state was suspended by restricted rocking around the central C–C bond. Such a mechanism associated with this highly constrained conformation was examined for the first time.
