Abstract:Objective To explore the potential association of plasma mtDNA level with inflammatory cell counts and inflammatory factor levels in ICU patients after cardiac surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Methods From September 1, 2015 to December 1, 2016, all the patients who underwent cardiac surgery under CPB at our department of cardiovascular surgery were recruited in this study. Blood routine, liver and renal functions, and the levels of N-terminal brain natriuretic propeptide (NT-proBNP), IL-6, C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), and mtDNA were tested and measured within half an hour after cardiac surgery according to the respective requirements. Statistical software SPSS 21.0 was used for statistical analysis. Results ① A total of 962 patients were included in this study, including 459 males and 503 females. ② A linear correlation was observed between the logarithm of plasma mtDNA level and the logarithm of platelet activation after cardiac surgery under CPB (r=0.102 7, P=0.002 8). ③The square root of the plasma mtDNA level had a linear correlation with the square root of the absolute neutrophil number after cardiac surgery under CPB (r=0.106 9, P=0.004 0). ④There was a linear correlation between the logarithm of plasma mtDNA levels and the logarithm of IL-6 after cardiac surgery under CPB (r=0.079 8, P=0.045 3). Conclusion Plasma mtDNA level is closely associated with systemic inflammatory responses in ICU post-CPB patients at early stage. Activation of inflammatory cells in the CPB process may be the source of plasma mtDNA release
