Abstract:Data-driven simulation proves to be a powerful tool in revealing the dynamic process of the solar corona, but it remains challenging to implement the driving boundary conditions in a self-consistent way and match the observables at the photosphere. Here, we test two different photospheric velocity-driven MHD simulations in studying the quasi-static evolution of solar active region NOAA 11158. The two simulations were identically initialized with an MHD equilibrium as relaxed from a non-linear force-free field extrapolation from a vector magnetogram. Then, we energized the MHD system by applying the time series of photospheric velocity at the bottom boundary as derived by two different codes, the DAVE4VM and PDFI, from the observed vector magnetograms. To mimic the small-scale flux cancellation on the photosphere, the magnetic diffusion at the bottom boundary was set to be inversely proportional to the local scale length of the magnetic field. The result shows the evolution curves of the total magnetic energy and unsigned magnetic flux generated by the PDFI velocity match the corresponding curves from the observations much better than those by the DAVE4VM one. The structure of the current layer and synthetic image in PDFI simulation also has a more reasonable consistency with SDO/AIA 131 Å observation. The only shortage of the PDFI velocity is its capability in reproducing the morphology of sunspots, as characterized by a slightly lower correlation coefficient for the bottom magnetic field in simulations and magnetograms. Overall, this study suggests the superiority of each method in the models driven by the bottom velocity, which represents a further step toward the goal of reproducing more realistically the evolution of coronal magnetic fields using data-driven modeling.

Abstract:Solar eruptions such as flares and coronal mass ejections could cause disastrous space weather. To understand and predict these eruptive activities, we have to combine multi-wavelength observations and numerical simulations. Recently, data-driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations have provided a series of new findings in studying the accumulation of electric current and magnetic energy in active regions, in explaining magnetic flux rope eruptions and coronal mass ejections. We briefly review the progress in this field and introduce one way to realize data-driven MHD simulation, including processing magnetic field observational data, inversion of velocity field and electric field, models as initial conditions and subsequent dynamic simulations. Finally, we will look into the future of the data-driven simulations and point out several methods to improve the simulation results.
Data-driven MHD simulation of successive solar plasma eruptions

Abstract:Solar flares and plasma eruptions are sudden releases of magnetic energy stored in the plasma atmosphere. To understand the physical mechanisms governing their occurrences, three-dimensional magnetic fields from the photosphere up to the corona must be studied. The solar photospheric magnetic fields are observable, whereas the coronal magnetic fields cannot be measured. One method for inferring coronal magnetic fields is performing data-driven simulations, which involves time-series observational data of the photospheric magnetic fields with the bottom boundary of magnetohydrodynamic simulations. We developed a data-driven method in which temporal evolutions of the observational vector magnetic field can be reproduced at the bottom boundary in the simulation by introducing an inverted velocity field. This velocity field is obtained by inversely solving the induction equation and applying an appropriate gauge transformation. Using this method, we performed a data-driven simulation of successive small eruptions observed by the Solar Dynamics Observatory and the Solar Magnetic Activity Telescope in November 2017. The simulation well reproduced the converging motion between opposite-polarity magnetic patches, demonstrating successive formation and eruptions of helical flux ropes.

Simulating the Photospheric to Coronal Plasma Using Magnetohydrodynamic Characteristics. I. Data-driven Boundary Conditions

Abstract:We develop a general description of how information propagates through a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) system based on the method of characteristics and use that to formulate numerical boundary conditions that are intrinsically consistent with the MHD equations. Our formulation includes two major advances for simulations of the Sun. First, we derive data-driven boundary conditions that optimally match the state of the plasma inferred from a time series of observations of a boundary (e.g., the solar photosphere). Second, our method directly handles random noise and systematic bias in the observations, and finds a solution for the boundary evolution that is strictly consistent with MHD and maximally consistent with the observations. We validate the method against a Ground Truth (GT) simulation of an expanding spheromak. The data-driven simulation can reproduce the GT simulation above the photosphere with high fidelity when driven at high cadence. Errors progressively increase for lower driving cadence until a threshold cadence is reached and the driven simulation can no longer accurately reproduce the GT simulation. However, our characteristic formulation of the boundary conditions still requires adherence of the boundary evolution to the MHD equations even when the driven solution departs from the true solution in the driving layer. That increasing departure clearly indicates when additional information at the boundary is needed to fully specify the correct evolution of the system. The method functions even when no information about the evolution of some variables on the lower boundary is available, albeit with a further decrease in fidelity.

Abstract:The solar atmosphere is a complex, coupled, highly dynamic plasma environment, which shows rich structuring due to the presence of gravitational and magnetic fields. Several features of the Sun's atmosphere can serve as guiding media for magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves. At the same time, these waveguides may contain flows of various magnitudes, which can then destabilise the waveguides themselves. MHD waves were found to be ubiquitously present in the solar atmosphere, thanks to the continuous improvement in the spatial, temporal, and spectral resolution of both space-born and ground-based observatories. These detections, coupled with recent theoretical advancements, have been used to obtain diagnostic information about the solar plasma and the magnetic fields that permeate it, by applying the powerful concept of solar magneto-seismology (SMS). The inclusion of asymmetric shear flows in the MHD waveguide models used may considerably affect the seismological results obtained. Further, they also influence the threshold for the onset of the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability, which, at high enough relative flow speeds, can lead to energy dissipation and contribute to the heating of the solar atmosphere—one of the long-standing and most intensely studied questions in solar physics.

Abstract:A second-order path-conservative scheme with a Godunov-type finite-volume method has been implemented to advance the equations of single-fluid solar wind plasma magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in time. This code operates on the six-component composite grid system in three-dimensional spherical coordinates with hexahedral cells of quadrilateral frustum type. The generalized Osher–Solomon Riemann solver is employed based on a numerical integration of the path-dependent dissipation matrix. For simplicity, the straight line segment path is used, and the path integral is evaluated in a fully numerical way by a high-order numerical Gauss–Legendre quadrature. Besides its very close similarity to Godunov type, the resulting scheme retains the attractive features of the original solver: it is nonlinear, free of entropy-fix, differentiable, and complete, in that each characteristic field results in a different numerical viscosity, due to the full use of the MHD eigenstructure. By using a minmod limiter for spatial oscillation control, the path-conservative scheme is realized for the generalized Lagrange multiplier and the extended generalized Lagrange multiplier formulation of solar wind MHD systems. This new model that is second order in space and time is written in the FORTRAN language with Message Passing Interface parallelization and validated in modeling the time-dependent large-scale structure of the solar corona, driven continuously by Global Oscillation Network Group data. To demonstrate the suitability of our code for the simulation of solar wind, we present selected results from 2009 October 9 to 2009 December 29 show its capability of producing a structured solar corona in agreement with solar coronal observations.
Applications of Atomic Data to Studies of the Sun

Abstract:The Sun is a standard reference object for Astrophysics and also a fascinating subject of study in its own right. X-ray and extreme ultraviolet movies of the Sun's atmosphere show an extraordinary diversity of plasma phenomena, from barely visible bursts and jets to coronal mass ejections that impact a large portion of the solar surface. The processes that produce these phenomena, heat the corona and power the solar wind remain actively studied and accurate atomic data are essential for interpreting observations and making model predictions. For the Sun's interior intense effort is focused on resolving the "solar problem," (a discrepancy between solar interior models and helioseismology measurements) and atomic data are central to both element abundance measurements and interior physics such as opacity and nuclear reaction rates. In this article, topics within solar interior and solar atmosphere physics are discussed and the role of atomic data described. Areas of active research are highlighted and specific atomic data needs are identified.

Abstract:We present a method of conducting data-driven simulations of solar active regions and flux emergence with the MURaM radiative magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) code. The horizontal electric field that is derived from the full velocity and magnetic vectors is implemented at the photospheric (bottom) boundary to drive the induction equation. The energy equation accounts for thermal conduction along magnetic fields, optically thin radiative loss, and heating of coronal plasma by viscous and resistive dissipation, which allows for a realistic presentation of the thermodynamic properties of coronal plasma that are key to predicting the observational features of solar active regions and eruptions. To validate this method, the photospheric data from a comprehensive radiative MHD simulation of solar eruption (the ground truth) are used to drive a series of numerical experiments. The data-driven simulation reproduces the accumulation of free magnetic energy over the course of flux emergence in the ground truth with an error of 3%. The onset time is approximately 8 minutes delayed compared to the ground truth. However, a precursor-like signature can be identified at the correct onset time. The data-driven simulation captures key eruption-related emission features and plasma dynamics of the ground truth flare over a wide temperature span, from log 10 T = 4.5 to log 10 T > 8 . The evolution of the flare and coronal mass ejection as seen in synthetic extreme ultraviolet images is also reproduced with high fidelity. This method helps to understand the evolution of magnetic field in a more realistic coronal environment and to link the magnetic structures to observable diagnostics.

Heating and dynamics of the Solar atmosphere

Abstract:The solar atmosphere shows anomalous variation in temperature, starting from the 5500 K photosphere to the million-degree Kelvin corona. The corona itself expands into the interstellar medium as the free streaming solar wind, which modulates and impacts the near-Earth space weather. The precise source regions of different structures in the solar wind, their formation height, and the heating of the solar atmosphere are inextricably linked and unsolved problems in astrophysics. Observations suggest correlations between Coronal holes (CHs), which are cool, intensity deficit structures in the solar corona, with structures in the solar wind. Observations also suggest the local plasma heating in the corona through power-law distributed impulsive events. In this thesis, we use narrowband photometric, spectroscopic, and disc-integrated emission of the solar atmosphere ranging from Near Ultraviolet to X-rays along with in-situ solar wind measurements to understand (i). the source regions of the solar wind, (ii). the underlying mechanism of solar coronal heating, and (iii). the differentiation in dynamics of CHs with the background Quiet Sun (QS) regions, which do not show any significant signature of the solar wind. We leverage machine learning and numerical modeling tools to develop solar wind forecasting codes using interpretable AI, inversion codes to infer the properties of impulsive events and to understand the differences in the thermodynamics of CHs and QS regions. We finally present a unified scenario of solar wind emergence and heating in the solar atmosphere and discuss the implications of inferences from this thesis.

Abstract:The launches of Parker Solar Probe (Parker) and Solar Orbiter (SolO) are enabling a new era of solar wind studies that track the solar wind from its origin at the photosphere, through the corona, to multiple vantage points in the inner heliosphere. A key ingredient for these models is the input photospheric magnetic field map that provides the boundary condition for the coronal portion of many heliospheric models. In this paper, we perform steady-state, data-driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the solar wind during Carrington rotation 2258 with the GAMERA model. We use the ADAPT and AFT flux transport models and quantitatively assess how well each model matches in-situ measurements from Parker, SolO, and Earth. We find that both models reproduce the magnetic field components at Parker quantitatively well. At SolO and Earth, the magnetic field is reproduced relatively well, though not as well as at Parker, and the density is reproduced extremely poorly. The velocity is overpredicted at Parker, but not at SolO or Earth, hinting that the Wang-Sheeley-Arge (WSA) relation, fine-tuned for Earth, misses the deceleration of the solar wind near the Sun. We conclude that AFT performs quantitatively similarly to ADAPT in all cases and that both models are comparable to a purely WSA heliospheric treatment with no MHD component. Finally, we trace field lines from SolO back to an active region outflow that was observed by Hinode/EIS, and which shows evidence of elevated charge state ratios.

Abstract:It is well-known that magnetic fields dominate the dynamics in the solar corona, and new generation of numerical modeling of the evolution of coronal magnetic fields, as featured with boundary conditions driven directly by observation data, are being developed. This paper describes a new approach of data-driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation of solar active region (AR) magnetic field evolution, which is for the first time that a data-driven full-MHD model utilizes directly the photospheric velocity field from DAVE4VM. We constructed a well-established MHD equilibrium based on a single vector magnetogram by employing an MHD-relaxation approach with sufficiently small kinetic viscosity, and used this MHD equilibrium as the initial conditions for subsequent data-driven evolution. Then we derived the photospheric surface flows from a time series of observed magentograms based on the DAVE4VM method. The surface flows are finally inputted in time sequence to the bottom boundary of the MHD model to self-consistently update the magnetic field at every time step by solving directly the magnetic induction equation at the bottom boundary. We applied this data-driven model to study the magnetic field evolution of AR 12158 with SDO/HMI vector magnetograms. Our model reproduced a quasi-static stress of the field lines through mainly the rotational flow of the AR's leading sunspot, which makes the core field lines to form a coherent S shape consistent with the sigmoid structure as seen in the SDO/AIA images. The total magnetic energy obtained in the simulation matches closely the accumulated magnetic energy as calculated directly from the original vector magnetogram with the DAVE4VM derived flow field. Such a data-driven model will be used to study how the coronal field, as driven by the slow photospheric motions, reaches a unstable state and runs into eruptions.

Abstract:The lower solar atmosphere is a layer with a thickness of about 2 000 km, however, it is full of dynamics with different scales and various features with different characteristics. More importantly, it is the only path through which the energy inside the convection zone is transferred into the corona so as to heat the latter to 1 MK. In addition, the lower solar atmosphere is the only layer in the solar atmosphere where the magnetic field can be ac-curately measured so far. All these turn this thin layer into the spotlight of the radiative magnetohydrodynamic research. In this paper, we review all the progress both in numerical research and numerical methods, with the purpose to shed light on future development in this research area.
A New Approach of Data-driven Simulation and Its Application to Solar Active Region 12673

Abstract:The solar coronal magnetic field is a pivotal element in the study of eruptive phenomena, and understanding its dynamic evolution has long been a focal point in solar physics. Numerical models, driven directly by observation data, serve as indispensable tools in investigating the dynamics of the coronal magnetic field. This paper presents a new approach to electric field inversion, which involves modifying the electric field derived from the DAVE4VM velocity field using ideal Ohm's law. The time series of the modified electric field is used as a boundary condition to drive a MHD model, which is applied to simulate the magnetic field evolution of active region 12673. The simulation results demonstrate that our method enhances the magnetic energy injection through the bottom boundary, as compared with energy injection calculated directly from the DAVE4VM code, and reproduce of the evolution of the photospheric magnetic flux. The coronal magnetic field structure is also in morphological similarity to the coronal loops. This new approach will be applied to the high-accuracy simulation of eruption phenomena and provide more details on the dynamical evolution of the coronal magnetic field.

Three-dimensional numerical simulation of magnetohydrodynamic-gravity waves and vortices in the solar atmosphere

Abstract:With the adaptation of the FLASH code we simulate magnetohydrodynamic-gravity waves and vortices as well as their response in the magnetized three-dimensional (3D) solar atmosphere at different heights to understand the localized energy transport processes. In the solar atmosphere strongly structured by gravitational and magnetic forces, we launch a localized velocity pulse (in horizontal and vertical components) within a bottom layer of 3D solar atmosphere modelled by initial VAL-IIIC conditions, which triggers waves and vortices. The rotation direction of vortices depends on the orientation of an initial perturbation. The vertical driver generates magnetoacoustic-gravity waves which result in oscillations of the transition region, and it leads to the eddies with their symmetry axis oriented vertically. The horizontal pulse excites all magnetohydrodynamic-gravity waves and horizontally oriented eddies. These waves propagate upwards, penetrate the transition region, and enter the solar corona. In the high-beta plasma regions the magnetic field lines move with the plasma and the temporal evolution show that they swirl with eddies. We estimate the energy fluxes carried out by the waves in the magnetized solar atmosphere and conclude that such wave dynamics and vortices may be significant in transporting the energy to sufficiently balance the energy losses in the localized corona. Moreover, the structure of the transition region highly affects such energy transports, and causes the channelling of the propagating waves into the inner corona.

Global MHD Simulations of the Time-Dependent Corona

Abstract:We describe, test, and apply a technique to incorporate full-sun, surface flux evolution into an MHD model of the global solar corona. Requiring only maps of the evolving surface flux, our method is similar to that of Lionello et al. (2013), but we introduce two ways to correct the electric field at the lower boundary to mitigate spurious currents. We verify the accuracy of our procedures by comparing to a reference simulation, driven with known flows and electric fields. We then present a thermodynamic MHD calculation lasting one solar rotation driven by maps from the magnetic flux evolution model of Schrijver & DeRosa (2003). The dynamic, time-dependent nature of the model corona is illustrated by examining the evolution of the open flux boundaries and forward modeled EUV emission, which evolve in response to surface flows and the emergence and cancellation flux. Although our main goal is to present the method, we briefly investigate the relevance of this evolution to properties of the slow solar wind, examining the mapping of dipped field lines to the topological signatures of the "S-Web" and comparing charge state ratios computed in the time-dependently driven run to a steady state equivalent. Interestingly, we find that driving on its own does not significantly improve the charge states ratios, at least in this modest resolution run that injects minimal helicity. Still, many aspects of the time-dependently driven model cannot be captured with traditional steady-state methods, and such a technique may be particularly relevant for the next generation of solar wind and CME models.

Abstract:The magnetosphere is the outermost layer of the geospace, and the interaction of the solar wind with the magnetosphere is the key element of the space weather cause-and-effect chain process from the Sun to Earth, which is one of the most challenging scientific problems in the geospace weather study. The nonlinearity, multiple component, and time-dependent nature of the geospace make it very difficult to describe the physical process in geospace using traditional analytic analysis approach. Numerical simulations, a new research tool developed in recent decades, have a deep impact on the theory and application of the geospace. MHD simulations started at the end of the 1970s, and the initial study was limited to two-dimensional (2D) cases. Due to the intrinsic three-dimensional (3D) characteristics of the geospace, 3D MHD simulations emerged in the 1980s, in an attempt to model the large-scale structures and fundamental physical processes in the magnetosphere. They started to combine with the space exploration missions in the 1990s and make comparisons with observations. Physics-based space weather forecast models started to be developed in the 21st century. Currently only a few space-power countries such as USA and Japan have developed 3D magnetospheric MHD models. With the rapid advance of space science in China, we have developed a new global MHD model, namely PPMLR-MHD, which has high order spatial accuracy and low numerical dissipation. In this review, we will briefly introduce the global 3D MHD modeling, especially the PPMLR-MHD code, and summarize our recent work based on the PPMLR-MHD model, with an emphasis on the interaction of interplanetary shocks with the magnetosphere, large-scale current systems, reconnection voltage and transpolar potential drop, and Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) instability at the magnetopause.

Abstract:The solar wind gets thermalized and compressed when crossing a planetary bow shock, forming the magnetosheath. The angle between the upstream magnetic field and the shock normal vector separates the quasi-parallel from the quasi-perpendicular magnetosheath, significantly influencing the physical conditions in these regions. A reliable classification between both magnetosheath regions is of utmost importance since different phenomena and physical processes take place on each. The complexity of this classification is increased due to the origin and variability of the solar wind. Using measurements from the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms mission and OMNI data between 2008 and 2023, we demonstrate the importance of magnetosheath classification across various solar wind plasma origins. We focus on investigating the ion energy fluxes in the high-energy range for each solar wind type, which typically serves as an indicator for foreshock activity and thus separating the quasi-parallel from quasi-perpendicular magnetosheath. Dividing the data set into different regimes reveals that fast solar wind plasma originating from coronal holes causes exceptionally high-energy ion fluxes even in the quasi-perpendicular environment. This stands in stark contrast to all other solar wind types, highlighting that magnetosheath classification is inherently biased if not all types of solar wind are considered in the classification. Combining knowledge of solar wind origins and structures with shock and magnetosheath research thus contributes to an improved magnetosheath characterization. This is particularly valuable in big-data machine-learning applications within heliophysics, which requires clean and verified data sets for optimal performance.

MHD Waves in Open Coronal Structures

Abstract:Modern observatories have revealed the ubiquitous presence of magnetohydrodynamic waves in the solar corona. The propagating waves (in contrast to the standing waves) are usually originated in the lower solar atmosphere which makes them particularly relevant to coronal heating. Furthermore, open coronal structures are believed to be the source regions of solar wind, therefore, the detection of MHD waves in these structures is also pertinent to the acceleration of solar wind. Besides, the advanced capabilities of the current generation telescopes have allowed us to extract important coronal properties through MHD seismology. The recent progress made in the detection, origin, and damping of both propagating slow mangetoacoustic waves and kink (Alfvenic) waves is presented in this review article especially in the context of open coronal structures. Where appropriate, we give an overview on associated theoretical modelling studies. A few of the important seismological applications of these waves are discussed. The possible role of Aflvenic waves in the acceleration of solar wind is also touched upon.
