Abstract:The polymer science at Zhejiang University (ZJU) is well known for its foremost origin of study and education of polymers in China. According to the latest US News rankings, it is ranked third in the subject of Polymer Sciences. The Department of Polymer Science and Engineering (DPSE) is one of the earliest academic institutions devoted to polymers at ZJU. Under the leadership of Prof. Zhi-Quan Shen and Prof. Jia-Chong Shen, academicians of the Academia Sinica, 54 faculty members (including 28 professors, 26 associate professors, and senior researchers) are now working in education and scientific research of polymer sciences, polymer composites and biomedical macromolecules. Our faculty is among the finest all over the nation, leading polymer science and engineering research. Our department has been developed as a collaborative community of faculties, students, and alumni dedicated to research developments and solving important technical questions with three decades of endeavors. In this special issue of ZJU, we aim to share a selection of recent research activities from our faculties, students, and alumni, classified into the following six topics: controlled polymerization, polymer physics and rheology, biomedical polymers, polymer membranes and films, organic and polymeric photo-electronic functional materials, and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and graphene materials. The topic of controlled polymerization illustrates the fabrication of fine polymers with sophisticated polymerization techniques. A protocol of using readily available raw materials of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, and carbonyl sulfide is developed by Zhang et al. to synthesize sulfur-rich poly(thioether)s that exhibit Tm values ranging from 76°C to 144°C and have high refractive index up to 1.68. Du et al. synthesize a series of ABCBA symmetrical amphiphilic pentablock terpolymers with various block lengths two-step atom transfer radical polymerization. These polymers can form high-genus vesicles in dilute aqueous solutions. In another study, Ling et al. design the synthesis of P(EVL-alt-EDT)-g-PEG combining thiol-ene click polymerization and ring-opening grafting reaction. The obtained polymers consist of a hydrophobic backbone of alternative copolymers of disubstituted δ-valerolactone EVL with EDT and hydrophilic side chains of PEG. In the polymer physics and rheology area, Shangguan et al. investigate the effect of sacrificial bonds on molecular dynamics and rheological behavior using hybrid butadiene-styrene-vinylpyridine rubber vulcanizates as a powerful demonstration case. Wu et al. study the mechanical property of metallosupramolecular hydrogels containing metal–ligand complexes in detail. Moreover, the recent developments in the crystallization-driven self-assembly of block copolymers are presented in two separate review articles by Xu et al. and Pan et al. In the section on biomedical polymers, we focus on understanding the response mechanism of polymers and developing materials for biomedical applications. In the first contribution, Gao et al. review the adhesion and interaction patterns of immune cells with chiral polymers, changes in shapes and characteristics of cells, release or inhibition of cytokines, and resulting responses. Then, a series of materials, including pH-sensitive polyion nanocomplexes for antimicrobial peptide delivery, multifunctional fibrous wound dressings for refractory wound healing, multilayer films with pH-responsive properties for drug delivery, a responsive hydrogel toward enzyme free three-dimensional cell culture are presented. In the field of polymer membranes and films, research articles describing the polymer membrane solutions for separation and strategies for tuning the structure of films are covered. Xu et al. fabricate magnetic Janus membranes with remotely magnetic controllability and wind-resistant floatation to enhance interfacial solar evaporation in airflow conditions, which may offer possibilities for offshore water purification. Zhu et al. report the polymers of intrinsic microporosity membranes with high comprehensive performance and permeation stability by adding nano-TiO2. Cao et al. demonstrate PAAm/chitosan stainless steel mesh composite membrane as a promising candidate for oil–water separation. Zhu et al. develop a tri-functional unit groups-contained polyurethane membrane with excellent biocompatibility and antibacterial properties. Additionally, it is shown by Wan et al. that tuning the oxyethyl group in the chain middle of PS contributes to the formation of films with ordered patterns. Fu et al. showcase highly branched polyethylene as efficient sorbent material for oil-spill cleanup and oil/water separation. Sun et al. systematically investigate the relationships between three steps of the inverse emulsion-breath figure (Ie-BF) method, providing a new pathway for efficiently targeted modification of hydrophilic components in porous structures. Our activities in solar cells and lithium batteries are presented in the research area of organic and polymeric photo-electronic functional materials. Chen et al. investigate the effect of side chains on non-fullerene acceptors and the photovoltaic performance of the resulting organic solar cells in detail. A review by Fu et al. discusses the combination of the versatility of organic chemistry and a multitude of well-understood ligand-metal interactions, allowing self-assembled monolayers of organic molecules to direct control over the electronic and chemical properties at the inorganic-organic interfaces. A composite film with a core-shell porous nanostructure is fabricated by Zhang et al. by introducing TiO2 nanorod arrays into star-shaped structure-conjugated microporous polymers. Finally, Huang et al. summarize the recent development of using covalent organic frameworks for applications in lithium batteries. The last section focuses on AIE and graphene materials. A perspective by Zhang et al. presents an overview of the mysterious blue emission around 440 nm in carbonyl-based aliphatic clusteroluminogens. The (n, π*) transition of carbonyl group most likely generates the 440 nm clusteroluminescence, which may reveal the common features and general photophysical theories of clusteroluminescence, and shine a new light on aggregate photophysics. Furthermore, the intrinsic properties of building blocks, constituent materials, structure design, and applications of elastic graphene aerogels in the past decades are reviewed by Gao et al. This May, we are celebrating the 125th anniversary of ZJU and the 30th anniversary of our department.
