Abstract:Costas loop is analyzed to be superior to phase locked loop for high-order QAM signals with high SER. In experiments, the SNR of Costas loop is 1.7 dB higher than phase locked loop for 256 QAM.

Abstract:The design of the carrier recovery loops in an all-digitized QAM receiver is investigated and two cascaded digital carrier recovery loops are proposed. One is the fast loop and the other is the slow loop. The slow loop consists of a frequency detector(FD), a phase-frequency detector(PFD)and a loop filter. The fast loop consists of a phase rotator, a phase detector(PD)and a loop filter. Simulation results show that the two loop parameters have optimal values in AWGN (Additive White Gaussian Noise) channels. When the two loops work around the optimal values, the influence of the phase noise upon the receiver is minimized and good performance can be achieved. Finally, the table of the optimal loop parameter values under different signal-to-noise ratios is presented.

Abstract:The carrier recovery is one key technique in the demodulation of high order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals. A carrier recovery algorithm which switches between multi-threshold polarity decision mode and decision directed mode according to the standard deviation of the frequency of numerically controlled oscillator (NCO) is proposed. The proposed algorithm can detect a proper time for the mode switch to yield lower steady state error. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in improving the performance of blind carrier recovery.

Abstract:A novel carrier recovery algorithm for high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is proposed in this paper. Besides the traditional decision-directed phase detector, the algorithm employs an improved polarity-based phase detector to extend the acquisition range of carrier frequency offset. And when combined with a dual-mode adaptive equalization algorithm, it can be used in the application over multi-path channels. Simulation results demonstrate that it can deal with carrier frequency offset up to 960 kHz@256QAM over AWGN channels and 690 kHz@256QAM over typical coaxial cable channels at a baud rate of 6.9 Msps. Meanwhile, its complexity is quite low.

Abstract:Design of stable carrier recovery circuits are used in many applications: wireless digital communication, optical communication, microwave devices and other applications. Quadrature Phase-Shift Keying (QPSK, 4-QAM) is used as modulation technique in many of these applications, since QPSK provides double the data rate of classic Binary PSK (BPSK) modulation. Analysis of Costas loop is a hard task because of its non-linearity. In this work we consider two well-known modifications of 4QAM Costas loop circuits and discuss a new circuit proposed by J. Ladvanszky. MATLAB Simulink models of the circuits are provided and the noise analysis is performed.

Abstract:Signal detection for vehicle-to-vehicle and wireless network application has motivated new design for conditions in which channel is time-selective fading. Since the physical layer (PHY) forms the foundation of the communication protocol stack, the performance of this layer affects all high layers of the system stack. Quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (QO-STBC) can provide full rate transmission and partial diversity under low decoding complexity. Previous papers on QO-STBC assume that the channels are slow fading or remain static over the length of the codeword. However, time-selective channels do exist, and in this case, the decoder proposed in Jafarkhani (2001) cannot be used to achieve a proper error performance. In order to mitigate the severe performance degradation, the zero forcing (ZF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) decoders are employed in this paper. We also propose a zero forcing interference cancellation decision-feedback equalizer (ZF-IC-DFE) and a minimum mean-square error interference cancellation decision-feedback equalizer (MMSE-IC-DFE) via Cholesky factorization of the channel Gram matrix after performing interference cancellation. By feeding back past decisions on previously detected symbols, DFE schemes can achieve an additional performance gain compared to their corresponding linear decoders. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:This paper proposes a novel all digital VSB carrier recovery loop used for HDTV terrestrial transmission. It simply uses Hilbert transforms of the inphase and quadrature components of the VSB baseband signal to generate an accurate phase error signal free of self-noise. This error signal can be used to directly rotate the carrier phase in a feedforward architecture, or to control the NCO in a loop back architecture. Due to its free-of-self-noise nature, the resultant carrier phase noise is extremely small in comparison with traditional FPLL, and the acquisition range is as large as ±200 kHz in our HDTV application. The proposed loop can work properly when the CNR is below 10 dB, and the acquisition is still very fast. Performance analysis and simulation results are given in detail

Abstract:An improved joint carrier recovery and adaptive equalization algorithm for high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is proposed. It combines a dual-mode adaptive equalization algorithm and an optimal frequency/phase detection algorithm which operate in an optimal four-step sequence. Computer simulation and FPGA implementation demonstrate that this algorithm is robust even under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and is especially suitable for high-order QAM receivers. The algorithm can acquire a carrier frequency offset up to 300 kHz at 256QAM over typical coaxial cable channels.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate transmitting high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals with carrierless and intensity-only measurements with phase retrieval (PR) receiving techniques. The intensity errors during measurement, including noise and distortions, are found to be a limiting factor for the precise convergence of the PR algorithm. To improve the PR reconstruction accuracy, we propose a distortion-aware PR scheme comprising both training and reconstruction stages. By estimating and emulating the distortion caused by various channel impairments, the proposed scheme enables enhanced agreement between the estimated and measured amplitudes throughout the PR iteration, thus resulting in improved reconstruction performance to support high-order QAM transmission. With the aid of proposed techniques, we experimentally demonstrate 50-GBaud 16QAM and 32QAM signals transmitting through a standard single-mode optical fiber (SSMF) span of 40 and 80 km, and achieve bit error rates (BERs) below the 6.25% hard decision (HD)-forward error correction (FEC) and 25% soft decision (SD)-FEC thresholds for the two modulation formats, respectively. By tuning the pilot symbol ratio and applying concatenated coding, we also demonstrate that a post-FEC data rate of up to 140 Gb/s can be achieved for both distances at an optimal pilot symbol ratio of 20%.

Abstract:Nowadays, the coherent optical communication system plays an important role in communication field because of large capability and bandwidth. A coherent optical communication, based on high-order modulation and digital signal processing technologies, consists of optical transmitters, optical fiber lines, optical amplifiers and optical receivers. In the high-speed coherent optical communication system, the phase noise from the transmitter laser and the local oscillator laser can significantly degrade the performance of the signal transmission and detection, especially for the systems using high-order modulation format, such as m-ary phase shift keying (m-PSK) and m-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (m-QAM). Therefore, investigations on laser phase noise compensation algorithm based on digital signal processing technologies has become more and more significant. In this work, a multi-ring carrier phase recovery algorithm is developed for compensating the laser phase noise in optical fiber communication systems using high-order modulation formats. Degradations on the performance of communication systems due to the laser phase noise have been investigated. The system performance using the proposed algorithm and the conventional Viterbi-Viterbi algorithm were also evaluated in 9-channel and 15channel, 32-Gbaud, Nyquist-spaced QPSK, 16-QAM, 64-QAM and 256-QAM coherent transmission systems with considering the impact of the laser phase noise. It is found that the phase noise leads to stricter constraints on the linewidths of transmitter-side and receiver-side lasers, and it can greatly degrade the achievable information rates in communication systems. Besides, compared to the conventional Viterbi-Viterbi algorithm, which is usually applied in the QPSK system, our proposed algorithm can also well mitigate the laser phase noise in 16-QAM, 64-QAM and 256-QAM optical communication systems.

Abstract:The Costas loop is the key technique of synchronous demodulation in the next generation of satellite optical communication systems. To better understand the Costas loop, the relationship between phase deviation of the Costas loop and bit error rate (BER) performance of a binary-phase-shift keying (BPSK) space uplink optical communication system is achieved. Furthermore, the BER performance versus frequency deviation, zenith angle, data rate, and divergence angle are analyzed. Simulation results indicate that BER performances are not sensitive for parameters when the phase deviation of the Costas loop is designed with restriction of $\pi/16$. These results are helpful for enhancing BER performance and the design of space optical communication systems.

Abstract:The constant modulus algorithm (CMA) is one widely used algorithm for blind equalization of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals. The algorithm exhibits slow convergence rate and large steady state mean square error and the phase blind nature in comparison with the algorithms used in conventional data-aided equalization schemes. In this paper, a variable step size modified constant modulus algorithm is proposed. The proposed algorithm can achieve fast convergence rate and decrease steady state mean square error and correct phase shift and carrier frequency offset at the same time. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in improving convergence behavior and bit error rate performance.

Abstract:With the reference to the QAM,an effective carrier recovery method is integrated.Based on the great capability of sweeping algorithm to capture frequency offset,capturing and tracking of that in big range is accomplished associated with decision directed method.Also an improved design of sweeping threshold is used under all of the rank of QAM,making the algorithm have ability to capture frequency offset fast.The simulation results with Matlab shows that the method discussed is of reliability and reaches 5% symbolic rate capturing range,which applies to all digital transmission QAM receiving system.
Iterative Carrier Recovery Based on Soft Decision Metrics of LDPC Decoding

Abstract:It is difficult to recovery carrier at rather low SNR (≤2 dB). An iterative carrier recovery via soft decision metrics of LDPC decoding is proposed. By maximizing the sum of the absolute value of the soft decision metrics of LDPC decoding with search window aided simplex algorithm, it can obtain accurate carrier estimate which will be compensated. Meanwhile, it can be combined with the Costas loop with LDPC decoding feedback to eliminate the residual carrier offsets. Simulation results indicate that it can overcome the problems of phase ambiguity, cycle slip and so on, and the performance of the QPSK system with it under carrier offsets is just within 0.1 dB of the ideal performance at the cost of some more computation complexity.

Abstract:Using coherent optical detection and digital signal processing, laser phase noise and equalization enhanced phase noise can be effectively mitigated using the feed-forward and feed-back carrier phase recovery approaches. In this paper, theoretical analyses of feed-back and feed-forward carrier phase recovery methods have been carried out in the long-haul high-speed n-level phase shift keying (n-PSK) optical fiber communication systems, involving a one-tap normalized least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm, a block-wise average algorithm, and a Viterbi-Viterbi algorithm. The analytical expressions for evaluating the estimated carrier phase and for predicting the bit-error-rate (BER) performance (such as the BER floors) have been presented and discussed in the n-PSK coherent optical transmission systems by considering both the laser phase noise and the equalization enhanced phase noise. The results indicate that the Viterbi-Viterbi carrier phase recovery algorithm outperforms the one-tap normalized LMS and the block-wise average algorithms for small phase noise variance (or effective phase noise variance), while the one-tap normalized LMS algorithm shows a better performance than the other two algorithms for large phase noise variance (or effective phase noise variance). In addition, the one-tap normalized LMS algorithm is more sensitive to the level of modulation formats.
