Abstract:Stochastic nonlinear impairment is the primary factor that limits the transmission performance of high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems. This Letter presents a low-complexity adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (LANFIS) nonlinear equalizer for OAM-MDM intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission with three OAM modes and 15 wavelength division multiplex (WDM) channels. The LANFIS equalizer could adjust the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the distorted pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols to fit the statistical characteristics of the WDM-OAM-MDM transmission channel. Therefore, although the transmission symbols in the WDM-OAM-MDM system are subjected to a stochastic nonlinear impairment, the proposed LANFIS equalizer can effectively compensate the distorted signals. The proposed equalizer outperforms the Volterra equalizer with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 2, 1.5, and 1.3 dB for three OAM modes at a wavelength of 1550.12 nm, respectively. It also outperforms a CNN equalizer, with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 1, 0.5, and 0.3 dB, respectively. Moreover, complexity reductions of 67%, 74%, and 99.9% are achieved for the LANFIS equalizer compared with the Volterra, CNN, and ANFIS equalizers, respectively. The proposed equalizer has high performance and low complexity, making it a promising candidate for a high-speed WDM-OAM-MDM system.

Abstract:A flexible polarization demultiplexing method based on an adaptive Kalman filter (AKF) is proposed in which the process noise covariance has been estimated adaptively. The proposed method may significantly improve the adaptive capability of an extended Kalman filter (EKF) by adaptively estimating the unknown process noise covariance. Compared to the conventional EKF, the proposed method can avoid the tedious and time consuming parameter-by-parameter tuning operations. The effectiveness of this method is confirmed experimentally in 128 Gb/s 16QAM polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) coherent optical transmission systems. The results illustrate that our proposed AKF has a better tracking accuracy and a faster convergence (about 4 times quicker) compared to a conventional algorithm with optimal process noise covariance.

Abstract:We present a novel investigation on the enhancement of phase noise in coherent optical transmission system due to electronic chromatic dispersion compensation. Two types of equalizers, including a time domain fiber dispersion finite impulse response (FD-FIR) filter and a frequency domain blind look-up (BLU) filter are applied to mitigate the chromatic dispersion in a 112-Gbit/s polarization division multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) transmission system. The bit-error-rate (BER) floor in phase estimation using an optimized one-tap normalized least-mean-square (NLMS) filter, and considering the equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN) is evaluated analytically including the correlation effects. The numerical simulations are implemented and compared with the performance of differential QPSK demodulation system.

Abstract:For the discrete spectrum nonlinear frequency division multiplexing (DS-NFDM) 16/64 amplitude phase shift keying (APSK) system, the inevitable laser impairments including frequency offset (FO) and carrier phase noise (CPN) would cause different rotations of the received signal constellations. In addition, the combined effect of FO and amplifier spontaneous emission (ASE) noise induces the eigenvalue shift, accordingly the residual channel impairment (RCI) is inevitably yielded. To address the above problems, we deduce the joint impairment model of FO, CPN and RCI, and then propose a joint equalization scheme using two-stage cascaded extended Kalman filter (TSC-EKF) for these impairments. It performs frequency offset compensation in the first stage, subsequently carries out joint equalization of CPN and RCI in the second stage. Meanwhile, the minimum Euclidean distance and phase difference between the received symbols and the ideal 16/64APSK constellations are ingeniously fused to calculate the innovations of TSC-EKF. The effectiveness has been verified by 2 GBaud DS-NFDM 16/64 APSK simulations and DS-NFDM 16APSK transmission experiments. The results demonstrate that when performing the joint equalization of FO, CPN and RCI, the maximum FOE range of TSC-EKF scheme achieves 1.2 and 9.6 times as that of nonlinear frequency domain (NFD) scheme and fast Fourier transform -Like (FFT-Like) scheme, respectively. Furthermore, its maximum LW tolerance reaches 3.3 times as that of the M -th power scheme. Importantly, the complexity of TSC-EKF is 63.4% as that of NFD scheme and on an order of O ( N ).

Abstract:A database is founded to estimate the nonlinear impairments of single channel return-to-zero (RZ) transmission systems with arbitrary parameters. Our link setup consists of multi-span transmission fiber and dispersion compensation component, with dispersion slope full compensating. The total transmission distance and the transmission fiber could be arbitrary, i.e. with arbitrary nonlinear coefficient, attenuation and dispersion. The parameters of input signal could also be arbitrary, i.e. with arbitrary transmission rate, input power, and any duty cycle of RZ pulse. Even the amplification schemes could be single-stage erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), or double-stage EDFA, or hybrid EDFA-Raman amplification. The database is obtained by numerous numerical simulations, neglecting the amplified spontaneous emission noise, polarization mode dispersion. The performance of transmission system impaired by nonlinear effects is represented by eye opening penalty (EOP). One can use the database to estimate the EOP of single channel transmission systems with bit rate up to 160 Gb/s, and can also evaluate the maximum transmission distance for given system impairment conveniently. For high-bit-rate transmission systems, intra-channel nonlinearity dominates the nonlinear impairments, therefore, the database to asses the nonlinear impairment of single channel transmission link is also valid for high-bit-rate wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) systems. The accuracy and the limitation of the database are also discussed.

Abstract:A novel nonlinear electrical equalizer (NLEE) based on Volterra theory is proposed for mitigating intra-channel nonlinearities in pseudo-linear coherent optical communication systems. According to the temporal matching condition of intra-channel nonlinear pulse interactions, we just select specific nonlinear terms and reduce the computation complexity considerably. Numerical simulations of 10GBaud coherent quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) transmission show that the simplified NLEE can efficiently mitigate intra-channel nonlinearities.

Abstract:A new approach to adaptive equalization of time-varying multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems is proposed. Based on a derived state-space model to characterize the time-varying MIMO channels, we use modified Kalman filter algorithm to estimate and track the channel and use LS criterion and MMSE criterion to perform the equalization. Simulation results illustrate good performance of this method. Two modified Kalman filter algorithm can effectively overcome the problem of computational errors. LS criterion equalization requires a strong condition on channel transfer function but it is simple and needs less storage space. MMSE criterion equalization can be applied in broader practical scenarios, but the calculation of autocorrelation matrix is computationally burdensome and needs more storage space.

Abstract:High-speed optical transmission systems suffer from severe inter-symbol interferences (ISIs) and nonlinear distortions due to the limited bandwidth and the nonlinear response of optical and electrical components at the transceivers. Previous work has shown the benefits of applying maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) to deal with the ISI and using the neural network-based equalizer (NNE) to mitigate strong nonlinearities. However, most of the NNE has a quasi-hard output as the training and validation loss continue to drop to an over-equalized state in which the quasi-hard output sequence loses the symbol-wise soft information of the signal and fails to obtain the BER performance gain from MLSE. In this work, we investigate the cascaded NNE and MLSE equalization scheme to deal with linear and nonlinear impairments. To solve the over-equalized problem, we propose a modified loss function (MLF) assisting NNE to achieve soft-out without entering into the over-equalized state. With the soft output after NNE, joint linear and nonlinear equalization can be realized by cascading the NNE with MLSE. Both numerical simulations and experimental demonstrations confirm the improved performance of our proposed method. With joint linear and nonlinear equalization, improved back-to-back (BtB) and fiber transmission performances of the 220-Gbps PAM-4 signal are demonstrated.

Abstract:Error vector magnitude (EVM) is commonly used for evaluating the quality of m-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (mQAM) signals. Recently proposed deep learning techniques for EVM estimation extend the functionality of conventional optical performance monitoring (OPM). In this article, we evaluate the tolerance of our developed EVM estimation scheme against various impairments in coherent optical systems. In particular, we analyze the signal quality monitoring capabilities in the presence of residual in-phasequadrature (IQ) imbalance, fiber nonlinearity, and laser phase noise. We use feedforward neural networks (FFNNs) to extract the EVM information from amplitude histograms of 100 symbols per IQ cluster signal sequence captured before carrier phase recovery. We perform simulations of the considered impairments, along with an experimental investigation of the impact of laser phase noise. To investigate the tolerance of the EVM estimation scheme to each impairment type, we compare the accuracy for three training methods: 1) training without impairment, 2) training one model for all impairments, and 3) training an independent model for each impairment. Results indicate a good generalization of the proposed EVM estimation scheme, thus providing a valuable reference for developing next-generation intelligent OPM systems.

Kalman Filter-Based Iterative Channel Estimation in Symmetric Α-Stable Noise Environments

Abstract:A Kalman filter-based channel estimation method was developed for symmetric α-stable(SαS) noise to improve transmission performance in time-varying additive impulsive noise channels.The channel is modeled as a first-order autoregressive process using a statistical property for the time-varying channel,with the minimum dispersion criterion then applied to the Kalman filter-based channel estimation.In a severely time-varying impulsive channel,the method gives 2 dB better performance than the least mean p-norm method.Simulations show this Kalman method overcomes the adverse impact of the impulse and the infinite second-order moment.The time-varying channel can be predicted accurately and quickly,and the method is more effective than the traditional least mean square(LMS) algorithm and the least mean p-norm(LMP) algorithm.

Abstract:In this work, we proposed two k-means-clustering-based algorithms to mitigate the fiber nonlinearity for 64-quadrature amplitude modulation (64-QAM) signal, the training-sequence assisted k-means algorithm and the blind k-means algorithm. We experimentally demonstrated the proposed k-means-clustering-based fiber nonlinearity mitigation techniques in 75-Gb/s 64-QAM coherent optical communication system. The proposed algorithms have reduced clustering complexity and low data redundancy and they are able to quickly find appropriate initial centroids and select correctly the centroids of the clusters to obtain the global optimal solutions for large k value. We measured the bit-error-ratio (BER) performance of 64-QAM signal with different launched powers into the 50-km single mode fiber and the proposed techniques can greatly mitigate the signal impairments caused by the amplified spontaneous emission noise and the fiber Kerr nonlinearity and improve the BER performance.

Abstract:In this study, we developed a wide and deep network-based nonlinear equalizer to compensate for nonlinear impairment in coherent optical communication systems. In our proposed equalizer, the power feature factor and inter-symbol feature sequence in the received signal are analyzed by two combined networks, wide and deep, respectively, so that the information contained in the signal can be fully utilized. We designed an experiment using a 120 Gbit/s 64-quadrature amplitude modulation (64-QAM) coherent optical communication system over a 375 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) to verify the performance of the proposed wide and deep network-based nonlinear equalizer. The experimental results showed that the proposed wide and deep network-based nonlinear equalizer achieved better performance at lower complexity compared with the traditional neural network-based nonlinear equalizer. The proposed equalizer significantly improved the equalization effect at a cost of a 0.3% increase in parameters, which indicates the potential of the proposed method for application in coherent optical communication systems.

Abstract:High-speed train (HST) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), as typical scenes of 5G communication, have attracted extensive attention from academia and industry in recent years. Aiming at the channel characteristics of frequency-selective fading, fast time-varying and time-domain non-stationary in high mobility scenarios, a nonlinear Kalman filter-based high-speed channel estimation algorithm for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems is proposed. We adopt basis expansion model (BEM) to eliminate the inter-subcarrier interference (ICI) caused by the fast time-varying characteristics. For the non-stationary characteristics of high mobility channel, a channel interpolation algorithm based on extended Kalman filter (EKF) is introduced to jointly estimate the channel impulse response (CIR) and time correlation coefficients. However, the EKF channel estimation uses structure of decision feedback to construct the observation matrix, which would lead to error propagation. This paper analyzes the generation of error propagation through theoretical derivation. Furthermore, for the error propagation of EKF, we introduce unscented Kalman filter (UKF) algorithm to perform Gaussian approximation of non-Gaussian observing system, and eliminate the influence by Kalman filter (KF). Simulation results demonstrate that the channel estimation accuracy of BEM-UKF is further improved compared with BEM-EKF, and the influence of pilot distance (PD) is smaller, which further improves the robustness of the algorithm.

Abstract:This paper introduces an OFDM communication system model featuring an impulsive noise detector followed by a prior denoising block, designed to improve performance in non‐Gaussian noise environments. The central idea behind the proposed work is that prior denoising enables the restoration of the Gaussian distribution. A modified wavelet decomposition with median and morphological filter is used to decompose the data to multiple levels and denoising is performed on the transformed domain. The experimental results illustrate an enhancement in symbol error rate (SER) within impulsive environments when compared to scenarios without denoising. Summary In wireless communication, impulsive noise often degrades channel quality, which poses challenges for equalizers. Although robust equalization methods offer some effectiveness, the occurrence of impulsive noise after training significantly impacts the symbol error rate (SER). To mitigate this issue, we propose a method that involves denoising the received signal using robust wavelet decomposition before equalization. This approach combines the discrete wavelet transform with median and morphological filters to reduce impulsive noise. A pre‐impulsive noise detection mechanism triggers denoising only when impulsive noise is detected. We evaluate the SER performance of the proposed technique using simulations of a 16‐QAM orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system with kernel interpolation‐based frequency domain equalization (FDE) in a Rayleigh fading channel with impulsive noise. Results show that our approach achieves SER levels comparable to conventional methods in Gaussian noise scenarios, demonstrating its effectiveness in challenging wireless communication environments. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed technique in non‐Gaussian noise gives the SER on par with the FDE in a Gaussian noise environment.

Mitigation of Turbulence-Induced Scintillation Noise in Free-Space Optical Communication Links Using Kalman Filter

Abstract:Atmospheric turbulence causes fluctuation of the received light signal in free-space optical (FSO) communication links through atmosphere, impairing link performance. The propagation of light wave in atmospheric turbulence was studied, and the received signal was modeled. Then the optimum decision threshold model was derived for FSO communication links using intensity modulation with direct detection (IM/DD). The turbulence-induced signal fluctuation, i.e. scintillation noise, was modeled as multiplicative noise in the received signal. In order to mitigate the scintillation noise, an adaptive Kalman filter was used to predict the value of received signal and turbulence statistics. Based on the Kalman filter, the detection with adaptive decision threshold was realized. Finally, the performance of Kalman filter was calculated, and the results show the error between optimum decision threshold and adaptive decision threshold is smaller than 0.48%. Kalman filter is an effective tool to combat turbulence-induced scintillation noise.

Abstract:The mitigation of intra-channel nonlinearities in 10 Gbaud coherent NRZ-QPSK systems via a nonlinear electrical equaliser based on Volterra theory is experimentally demonstrated. Without the requirement of prior knowledge of the fibre link, the equaliser significantly improves the system performance compared to digital dispersion compensation only.

Abstract:Enhanced equalization phase noise (EEPN), generated from the uncompensated dispersion experienced by laser phase noises, can cause serious damage to the transmission quality of optical fiber systems. In this work, the performance of a wideband Nyquist-spaced long-haul nonlinear optical fiber communication systems suffering from EEPN is investigated and discussed through split-step numerical simulations and analytical models based on the perturbation analysis, in the cases of digital nonlinearity compensation (NLC) and electronic dispersion compensation (EDC). The efficiency and the accuracy of the analytical models were validated via simulations, considering the different symbol rates and modulation formats. The performance of the C-band transmission was comprehensively studied based on the model. Our results reveal that the growth of symbol rates and transmission distances aggravates the distortions in the C-band system.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) DFT-spread optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission system utilizing a cost-effective directly modulated laser (DML) and direct detection. For 20-Gbaud 16QAM-OFDM signal, with the aid of nonlinear equalization (NLE) algorithm, we respectively provide 6.2-dB and 5.2-dB receiver sensitivity improvement under the hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3 for the back-to-back (BTB) case and after transmission over 10-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) case, related to only adopt post-equalization scheme. To our knowledge, this is the first time to use dynamic nonlinear equalizer (NLE) based on the summation of the square of the difference between samples in one IM/DD OFDM system with DML to mitigate nonlinear distortion.

Abstract:Linear and nonlinear impairments restrict the transmission performance of high-speed terahertz (THz) communication systems. To improve transmission performance, we propose a two-stage nonlinear equalizer (NLE). In the first stage, a memory-controlled long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network learns channel nonlinearity and compensates for it through nonlinear waveform regression. In the second stage, a low-complexity deep random forest (RF) network identifies nonlinear boundaries among individual QAM symbols and adjusts the standard hard decision thresholds of the QAM demodulator to align with the distribution of received symbols. This study experimentally validates the proposed two-stage NLE on a dual-channel THz-over-fiber transmission system using an intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) scheme, achieving a successful 20 Gbps line rate up to a 4.5-meter wireless link at both 125/300 GHz frequency bands. The proposed scheme outperforms a Volterra nonlinear equalizer in all tested scenarios, surpassing a linear equalizer (LE) by reducing the bit error rate (BER) from to in the 300 GHz link and from to in the 125 GHz link.
