Abstract:The flawed surface lattice configuration with numerous unsaturated dangling bonds at the surface of FA‐based perovskites not only trap photoexcited charge carriers but also trigger photochemical degradation of the absorber layer. A novel surface lattice engineering is developed to achieve efficient and stable inverted perovskite solar cells by coupling surface unsaturated ions, regulating ion bonding lengths/angles, renovating surface lattice configuration. State‐of‐the‐art inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have exhibited considerable promise for commercialization due to their prospective stability. However, the intricate crystallization of halide perovskite, especially for multi‐component perovskites, not only distorts the surface lattice from its ideal form but also introduces numerous unsaturated dangling bonds to form surface defects, which can easily lead to reduced stability and poor performance. Herein, a surface lattice engineering is developed by coupling surface unsaturated ions and regulating ion bonding lengths/angles to achieve efficient and stable inverted PSCs. The renovated surface lattice not only eliminates shallow/deep level defects on the surface of perovskite, but also enhances photo/thermal stability of the materials. Moreover, the surface lattice engineering contributes to uniform potential surface, and improves energy‐level alignment at the interfaces of the perovskite and C60 carrier transport layer, enhancing charge carrier extraction and transportation. Finally, the champion PSC delivers an impressive efficiency of 25.82% (certified 25.5%). Moreover, these PSCs exhibit excellent operational stability, retaining 94% initial efficiency after more than ≈1 000h maximum power point test.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with an inverted structure (often referred to as the p–i–n architecture) are attractive for future commercialization owing to their easily scalable fabrication, reliable operation and compatibility with a wide range of perovskite-based tandem device architectures1,2. However, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of p–i–n PSCs falls behind that of n–i–p (or normal) structure counterparts3–6. This large performance gap could undermine efforts to adopt p–i–n architectures, despite their other advantages. Given the remarkable advances in perovskite bulk materials optimization over the past decade, interface engineering has become the most important strategy to push PSC performance to its limit7,8. Here we report a reactive surface engineering approach based on a simple post-growth treatment of 3-(aminomethyl)pyridine (3-APy) on top of a perovskite thin film. First, the 3-APy molecule selectively reacts with surface formamidinium ions, reducing perovskite surface roughness and surface potential fluctuations associated with surface steps and terraces. Second, the reaction product on the perovskite surface decreases the formation energy of charged iodine vacancies, leading to effective n-type doping with a reduced work function in the surface region. With this reactive surface engineering, the resulting p–i–n PSCs obtained a PCE of over 25 per cent, along with retaining 87 per cent of the initial PCE after over 2,400 hours of 1-sun operation at about 55 degrees Celsius in air.

Efficient Inverted Perovskite Photovoltaics Through Surface State Manipulation

Abstract:A surface state manipulation is developed to effectively address the issue of poor interface contacts in the inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The strong chemical interaction between highly electronegative 4‐fluorophenethylamine hydrochloride (p‐F‐PEACl) and perovskite film reduces non‐radiative recombination and facilitates efficient charge extraction of interface. Finally, an overall efficiency improvement from 22.34% to 24.78% is achieved. Inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are considered as the most promising avenue for the commercialization of PSCs due to their potential inherent stability. However, suboptimal interface contacts between electron transport layer (ETL) (such as C60) and the perovskite absorbing layer within inverted PSCs always result in reduced efficiency and poor stability. Herein, a surface state manipulation strategy has been developed by employing a highly electronegative 4‐fluorophenethylamine hydrochloride (p‐F‐PEACl) to effectively address the issue of poor interface contacts in the inverted PSCs. The p‐F‐PEACl demonstrates a robust interaction with perovskite film through bonding of amino group and Cl− with I− and Pb2+ ions in the perovskite, respectively. As such, the surface defects of perovskite film can be significantly reduced, leading to suppressed non‐radiative recombination. Moreover, p‐F‐PEACl also plays a dual role in enhancing the surface potential and improving energy‐level alignment at the interfaces between the perovskite and C60 carrier transport layer, which directly contributes to efficient charge extraction. Finally, the open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of devices increases from 1.104 V to 1.157 V, leading to an overall efficiency improvement from 22.34% to 24.78%. Furthermore, the p‐F‐PEACl‐treated PSCs also display excellent stability.

Abstract:The strong nonradiative recombination loss of inverted PSCs at the surface and at the perovskite/C60 interface has limited the open-circuit voltage (Voc) and fill factor (FF) of the device and prevented further performance enhancement of PSCs. Here, a new phenomenon was introduced: piperazinium diiodide (PDI) as a surface modifier to suppress deep-level defects at the surface and regulate band alignment at the interface. Instead of penetrating into the lattice and forming a 2D structure, PDI existed mainly in a molecular form thermodynamically prone to deprotonation to prevent the deprotonation reaction between A-site cations and the formation of deep-level defects on the surface. In addition, PDI was shown to partially penetrate into C60 to modulate interfacial band bending to facilitate electron transport and hinder hole backflow. Accordingly, a more homogeneous surface contact potential difference (CPD) and a higher extraction rate of the hot carriers at the interface were observed in the PDI-treated films. Finally, the optimized inverted devices exhibited a state-of-art power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 26.15%, with a certified PCE of 25.87% (steady state: 25.52%). Voc increased from 1.12 V to 1.18 V, benefiting from a 57 mV higher quasi-Fermi level splitting (QFLS). Notably, the devices retained 90.4% and 94.2% of the initial efficiency after being aged at 85 °C for >500 h and tracked at the maximum power point for 1000 h, respectively.

Abstract:Inverted (p‐i‐n) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are advantageous in terms of easy fabrication, low‐temperature processibility, negligible hysteresis and excellent compatibility with the tandem devices in comparison with the regular (n‐i‐p) counterparts. Hole‐blocking layer is crucial for efficient electron transport of inverted PSCs, and only a single hole‐blocking layer of bathocuproine (BCP) is used typically. Herein, bis[2‐(diphenylphosphino)phenyl] ether oxide (DPEPO) with a deep HOMO energy level is incorporated atop of perovskite film as an auxiliary hole‐blocking layer, resulting in enhanced electron transport of inverted PSC devices. The P=O group within DPEPO can coordinate with Pb2+ cations of perovskite, leading to passivation of surface defects of perovskite. Besides, incorporation of DPEPO hole‐blocking layer prohibits undesired hole transport from perovskite to PCBM electron transport layer, thus suppressing non‐radiative electron‐hole recombination. As a result, combined with BCP hole‐blocking layer, inverted PSC devices based on double hole‐blocking layers exhibit a decent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.17% with a high open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.15 V which dramatically surpasses that based on single hole‐blocking layer (22.26%). Abstract:The highest power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) reported for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with inverted planar structures are still inferior to those of PSCs with regular structures, mainly because of lower open-circuit voltages (Voc). Here we report a strategy to reduce nonradiative recombination for the inverted devices, based on a simple solution-processed secondary growth technique. This approach produces a wider bandgap top layer and a more n-type perovskite film, which mitigates nonradiative recombination, leading to an increase in Voc by up to 100 millivolts. We achieved a high Voc of 1.21 volts without sacrificing photocurrent, corresponding to a voltage deficit of 0.41 volts at a bandgap of 1.62 electron volts. This improvement led to a stabilized power output approaching 21% at the maximum power point.

Abstract:Compared with the n-i-p structure, inverted (p-i-n) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) promise increased operating stability, but these photovoltaic cells often exhibit lower power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) because of nonradiative recombination losses, particularly at the perovskite/C 60 interface. We passivated surface defects and enabled reflection of minority carriers from the interface into the bulk using two types of functional molecules. We used sulfur-modified methylthio molecules to passivate surface defects and suppress recombination through strong coordination and hydrogen bonding, along with diammonium molecules to repel minority carriers and reduce contact-induced interface recombination achieved through field-effect passivation. This approach led to a fivefold longer carrier lifetime and one-third the photoluminescence quantum yield loss and enabled a certified quasi-steady-state PCE of 25.1% for inverted PSCs with stable operation at 65°C for >2000 hours in ambient air. We also fabricated monolithic all-perovskite tandem solar cells with 28.1% PCE.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as one of the influential photovoltaic technologies with promising cost-effectiveness. Though with mild processabilities to massive production, inverted PSCs have long suffered from inferior photovoltaic performances due to intractable defective states at boundaries and interfaces. Herein, an in situ passivation (ISP) method is presented to effectively adjust crystal growth kinetics and obtain the well-orientated perovskite films with the passivated boundaries and interfaces, successfully enabled the new access of high-performance inverted PSCs. The study unravels that the strong yet anisotropic ISP additive adsorption between different facets and the accompanied additive engineering yield the high-quality (111)-orientated perovskite crystallites with superior photovoltaic properties. The ISP-derived inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved remarkable power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 26.7% (certified as 26.09% at a 5.97 mm2 active area) and 24.5% (certified as 23.53% at a 1.28 cm2 active area), along with decent operational stabilities.

Abstract:In perovskite solar cells (PSCs), engineering the interface between perovskite absorber thin films and charge transport layers has been pivotal. Self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) in the electron‐blocking layer have improved contact efficiency, reducing interfacial recombination. SAM growth models and plasma treatment for conformal SAM growth are investigated, suppressing non‐radiative recombination. This approach achieves 24.5% power conversion efficiency (stabilized at 23.5%) in inverted PSCs. Significant advancements in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been driven by the engineering of the interface between perovskite absorbers and charge transport layers. Inverted PSCs offer substantial potential with their high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and enhanced compatibility for tandem solar cell applications. Conventional hole transport materials like poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) and poly(triaryl amine) (PTAA) not only constrain the PSC efficiency but also elevate their fabrication costs. In the case of improving inverted structured PSCs according to the aforementioned concerns, utilizing self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) as hole‐transporting layers has played a crucial role. However, the growth of self‐assembled monolayers on the substrates still limits the performance and reproducibility of inverted structured PSCs. In this study, the authors delve into the growth model of SAMs on different surface morphologies. Moreover, it is found that the plasma treatment can effectively regulate the surface morphologies of substrates and achieve conformal growth of SAMs. This treatment improves the uniformity and suppresses non‐radiative recombination at the interface, which leads to a PCE of 24.5% (stabilized at 23.5%) for inverted structured PSCs.

Abstract:Challenges remain hindering the performance and stability of inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs), particularly for the nonstable interface between lead halide perovskite and charge extraction metal oxide layer. Herein, we report a simple yet scalable interfacial strategy to facilitate the assemble of high‐performance inverted PSCs and scale‐up modules. The hybrid interfacial layer containing self‐assembly triphenylamine and conjugated poly(arylamine) simultaneously improves the chemical stability, charge extraction and energy level alignment of hole‐selective interface, meanwhile promoting perovskite crystallization. Consequently, the correspondent inverted PSCs and modules achieved remarkable power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 24.5% and 20.7% (aperture area of 19.4 cm2), respectively. The PSCs maintained over 80% of its initial efficiency under one‐sun equivalent illumination of 1200 hours. This strategy is also effective to perovskite with various bandgaps, demonstrating the highest PCE of 19.6% for the 1.76‐eV bandgap PSCs. Overall, this work provides a simple yet scalable interfacial strategy for obtaining state‐of‐the‐art inverted PSCs and modules. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Abstract:The interest in all-inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) featuring a p-i-n structure is on the rise, attributed to their superior heat resistance and adaptability with tandem cell methods. However, their progress has been far from the regular structure owing to the comparatively low open circuit voltage (Voc). This research employs phenylethylammonium iodide, incorporating various side groups, as passivators to tackle the previously mentioned problems and investigate their effects on passivation. It is found that a reduction of trap-state density in perovskite film was accomplished due to the PEAI effective passivation effect by establishing coordination with the under-coordinated Pb2+ ions. Furthermore, there was an enhancement in the alignment of energy levels at the CsPbI2Br perovskite/PCBM junction, resulting in better charge extraction from the CsPbI2Br layer to the charge transport layer. As a result, an improved champion efficiency of 14.26% with a Voc of 1.11 V, Jsc of 16.21 mA/cm2, and FF of 79.28% was yielded for the PEAI treatment inverted CsPbI2Br device, compared with the 12.15% efficiency of the control device. Superior device stability was exhibited for the optimal PEAI-treated devices without encapsulation. This research validates the significance of a side group on a surface passivation molecule to effectively passivate defects and optimize energy levels, especially for boosting Voc.
Interfacial Crosslinking Benzimidazolium Enables Eco-friendly Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells and Modules

Abstract:Interfacial engineering via controlled crosslinking at perovskite surface is of significance to address the interfacial loss in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs), while is unfortunately impeded by the unsatisfied interfacial charge extraction and transfer owing to the inherent low conductivity of the formed crosslinked network. We herein propose and validate a strategy of interfacial crosslinking benzimidazolium (ICB) that is capable of reducing the surface residual strain of perovskite and improving the interfacial carrier transfer, leading to a new benchmark of power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 25.30 % in inverted PSCs, as well as 21.73 % in inverted PSC modules (6 x 6 cm2). Such the ICB network also results in sustainable PSCs and modules with superior stability even under various harsh conditions, e.g. suppressing lead leakage of PSCs with the rate of 83.6 %, maintaining the initial efficiency of 90 % after 1200 h of continuous heating at 85 degrees C, and 92.8 % of its pristine efficiency over 1200 h of continuous irradiation. We thus believe that present work demonstrates the potential of ionic molecules crosslinking at interfaces for high performance inverted PSCs.

Abstract:Interfacial imperfections between the perovskite layer and the electron transport layer (ETL) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) can lead to performance loss and negatively influence long-term operational stability. Here, we introduce an interface engineering method to modify the interface between perovskite and ETL by using multifunctional carbon dots (CDs). C=O in the CDs can chelate with the uncoordinated Pb 2+ in the perovskite material, inhibit interfacial recombination, and enhance the performance and stability of device. In addition, –OH in CDs forms hydrogen bonds with I − and organic cation in perovskite, inhibiting light-induced I 2 release and organic cation volatilization, causing irreversible degradation of perovskite films, thereby enhancing the long-term operational stability of PSCs. Consequently, we achieve the champion inverted device with an efficiency of 24.02%. The CDs-treated PSCs exhibit high operational stability, and the maximum power point tracking only attenuates by 12.5% after 1000 h. Interfacial modification engineering supported by multifunctional quantum dots can accelerate the road to stable PSCs.

Abstract:Despite the rapid progress in efficiency, PSCs encounter substantial challenges regarding durability and scalability. Inverted p-i-n PSCs provide enhanced long-term operating stability over the conventional n-i-p structures but lag in PCE [3]. This limitation is mainly due to the interface between the perovskite light-absorbing layer and charge transport materials, where energy band misalignment and energy level pinning hinder PCE. Furthermore, surface defects exacerbate these constraints. In the endeavor to improve performance of PSCs, surface passivation is crucial for reducing nonradiative recombination at the interface. This commentary assesses the potential impact of dual-site-binding ligands on PSCs and anticipates their transformative effect on the field.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted much attention due to their low-cost fabrication and high power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, the long-term stability issues of PSCs remain a significant bottleneck impeding their commercialization. Inverted PSCs with a p-i-n architecture are being actively researched due to their concurrent good stability and decent efficiency. In particular, the PCE of inverted PSCs has improved significantly in recent years and is now almost approaching that of n-i-p PSCs. This review summarizes recent progress in the development of high-efficiency inverted PSCs, including the development of perovskite compositions, fabrication methods, and counter electrode materials (CEMs). Notably, we highlight the development of charge transport materials (CTMs) and the effects of defect passivation strategies on the performance of inverted PSCs. Finally, we discuss the remaining issues and perspectives of high-efficiency inverted PSCs.

Inorganic‐Derived 0D Perovskite Induced Surface Lattice Arrangement for Efficient and Stable All‐Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Inverted CsPbI3 PSCs treated with inorganic‐derived 0D Cs4PbBr6 perovskite nanocrystals show improved surface lattice arrangement, achieving a PCE of 21.03% and maintaining 92.48% stability after 1000 h under 1‐sun and damp heat conditions. Additionally, a module with a 64 cm2 aperture area demonstrates a PCE of 17.39%. The inverted inorganic CsPbI3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are prospective candidates for next‐generation photovoltaics owing to inherent robust thermal/photo‐stability and compatibility for tandems. However, the performance and stability of the inverted CsPbI3 PSCs fall behind the n‐i‐p counterparts due to poor energetic alignment and abundant interfacial defect states. Here, an inorganic 0D Cs4PbBr6 with a good lattice strain arrangement is implemented as the surface anchoring capping layer on CsPbI3. The Cs4PbBr6 perovskite induces enhanced electron‐selective junction and thus facilitates efficient charge extraction and effectively inhibits non‐radiative recombination. Consequently, the CsPbI3 PSCs with Cs4PbBr6 demonstrate the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of CsPbI3‐based inverted PSCs, reaching 21.03% PCE from a unit cell and 17.39% PCE from a module with a 64 cm2 aperture area. Furthermore, the resulting devices retain 92.48% after 1000 h under simultaneous 1‐sun and damp heat (85 °C / 85% relative humidity) environment.

Abstract:Wide-band gap (≥1.66 eV) inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are important portions of tandem silicon/PSCs. However, the poor efficiency and phase stability are still unresolved and blocking the industrialization of the scalable inverted PSCs. An interface modification strategy was developed using a multifunctional molecule, pyridinyl–benzimidazolium chloride to stabilize the perovskite surface. The pyridine and benzimidazole groups can fulfill halide vacancies, saturate the uncoordinated Pb 2+ sites, and bond with formamidinium/methylammonium cations. Benefitting from the interface defect passivation, reduced nonradiative recombination, and effective suppression of halide phase separation, a champion efficiency of 21.82% with a high V oc of 1.24 V in the fabricated inverted-small-area PSCs was achieved at the 1.67 eV-bandgap perovskite. The unsealed PSCs presented high light stability and excellent storage stability of over 2000 h. The semitransparent mini-modules were also successfully fabricated with high efficiency of 18.05% at a 1.92 cm 2 active area. This multifunctional defect passivation strategy provides an important avenue for high-performance perovskite top cells for tandem photovoltaics.

Improving Contact and Passivation of Buried Interface for High‐Efficiency and Large‐Area Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Abstract Inverted‐structured perovskite solar cells (PSCs) mostly employ poly‐triarylamines (PTAAs) as hole‐transporting materials (HTMs), which generally result in low‐quality buried interface due to their hydrophobic nature, shallow HOMO levels, and absence of passivation groups. Herein, the authors molecularly engineer the structure of PTAA via removing alkyl groups and incorporating a multifunctional pyridine unit, which not only regulates energy levels and surface wettability, but also passivates interfacial trap‐states, thus addressing above‐mentioned issues simultaneously. By altering the linking‐site on pyridine unit from ortho‐ ( o ‐PY) to meta‐ ( m ‐PY) and para‐position ( p ‐PY), they observed a gradually improved hydrophilicity and passivation efficacy, mainly owing to increased exposure of the pyridine‐nitrogen as well as its lone electron pair, which enhances the contact and interactions with perovskite. The open‐circuit voltage and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of inverted‐structured PSCs based on these HTMs increased with the same trend. Consequently, the optimal p ‐PY as HTM enables facile deposition of uniform perovskite films without complicated interlayer optimizations, delivering a remarkably high PCE exceeding 22% (0.09 cm 2 ). Moreover, when enlarging device area tenfold, a comparable PCE of over 20% (1 cm 2 ) can be obtained. These results are among the highest efficiencies for inverted PSCs, demonstrating the high potential of p ‐PY for future applications.

Abstract:Even the most efficient inverted p‐i‐n architecture perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are still inferior to those with regular n‐i‐p architecture, which is mainly limited by interfacial loss. Herein, both wet and dry metal‐halides perovskite film were regulated through organic molecules‐assisted sequential interfacial engineering for high‐performance inverted PSCs. In specific, organic acetic acid treatment on the wet film potently regulates the nucleation and crystallization of perovskite films. Then further loading 4‐(Dimethylamino)benzoic acid on the dry perovskite film creates a passivating agent layer to suppress defect formation, leading to more phase‐pure and conductive perovskite films. Combined experimental and theoretical results illustrate that such sequential treatment is beneficial for decreasing surface trap states, nonradiative recombination, and carrier transport loss. As a result, the target inverted PSC exhibits an unprecedented‐high fill factor (FF) of 85.31% together with a champion efficiency of 21.37%, which is greatly improved relative to the reference (FF of 79.60%, and efficiency of 19.40%). It should be noted that such a high FF is among the highest report and corresponding to 94.38% of the Shockley‐Queisser limited FF (90.39%) of PSCs with a bandgap of 1.576 eV.
