Abstract:The optical vortices carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are commonly generated by modulating the available conventional light beam. This article shows that a micro-laser operates at the exceptional point (EP) of the non-Hermitian quantum system can directly emit vortex laser with well-defined OAM at will. Two gratings (the refractive index modulation and along azimuthal direction and the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity) modulate the eigenmode of a micro-ring cavity to be a vortex laser mode. The phase-matching condition ensures that we can tune the OAM of the vortex beam to be arbitrary orders by changing the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity while the system is kept at EP. The results are obtained by analytical analysis and confirmed by 3D full wave simulations.
Novel complementary metasurfaces for the orbital angular momentum generation

Abstract:Besides amplitude, phase and polarization, wavefront is an important property of electromagnetic (EM) waves. EM waves with twisted wavefronts are known to carry orbital angular momentum (OAM). In this paper, a complementary-type metasurface is proposed to generate an OAM beam at microwave regime. Two metasurfaces that can produce OAM of order 2 and 4 are designed. By using our novel design methods, which are based on circuit model and dyadic Green's function, a high conversion efficiency has been achieved with a very low profile.

Abstract:A simple on-chip integrated structure is proposed to generate optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams, where only silicon waveguides and couplers are involved. The operating principle is based on mode converting and proper controlling the phase shift of second-order propagating mode so that OAM modes with charge numbers of 1 or -1 can be selectively generated with mode purity > 90%. The proposed device is very compact with footprint of <; 120 μm × 50 μm and can be easily fabricated with CMOS technology. Thus, such OAM mode generator is a promising candidate for applications ranging from optical tweezers and optical spanners to optical communications.
Generating optical superimposed vortex beam with tunable orbital angular momentum using integrated devices

Abstract:An integrated device, which consists of a variable amplitude splitter and an orbital angular momentum (OAM) emitter, is proposed for the superposition of optical vortex beams. With fixed wavelength and power of incident beam, the OAM of the radiated optical superimposed vortex beam can be dynamically tuned. To verify the operating principle, the proposed device has been fabricated on the SOI substrate and experimentally measured. The experimental results confirm the tunability of superimposed vortex beams. Moreover, the ability of independently varying the OAM flux and the geometric distribution of intensity is illustrated and discussed with numerical simulation. We believe that this work would be promising in various applications.

Abstract:In the past three decades, vortex beams (VBs) with orbital angular momentum (OAM) have attracted extensive attention in the fields of optical manipulation, image processing, optical communication, and optical measurement. Here, we demonstrate the generation of multi-OAM mode VBs using an intracavity diffraction edge modulation method by selectively “clipping” the high-order modes of the optical field through variable aperture diaphragms and variable slits. Multi-OAM mode VBs with 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10 vortices are generated, and the phase singularities in vortices are verified through interference experiments. We propose the principle of intracavity mode superposition and obtain the corresponding intensity and phase profiles by simulation. The generated VBs can maintain stable OAM propagation within the range of 83 mm. This work breaks the traditional understanding of generating multi-OAM mode VBs and provides guidance for the design of special vortex laser devices.

Abstract:Vortex beams with an orbital angular momentum (OAM) are extremely important in optical trapping, optical micromachining, high-capacity optical communications, and quantum optics. Nonlinear generation of such a vortex beam enables vortex beams to be obtained at new wavelengths, which opens up new possibilities for all-optical switching and manipulation of vortex beams. However, previous nonlinear vortex beam generation suffers from either low efficiency or low-level integration. Here, we use the technique of ultraviolet photolithography-assisted inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching to realize a compact nonlinear fork grating for high-efficiency nonlinear vortex beam generation. In our experiment, the depth of such a compact nonlinear fork-grating structure can be precisely controlled by etching time. The vortex beams with a topological charge of l = ±1, ± 2, ± 3 can be generated in the far field, and the normalized nonlinear conversion efficiency of such nonlinear vortex beam is 189% W-1cm-2. Our method not only provides an efficient and compact method for nonlinear vortex beam manipulation but also suits for timesaving and large-area nonlinear functional device fabrication.
Ultra-broadband multi-channel orbital angular momentum mode generator using a helical long-period grating pair

Abstract:We demonstrate an ultra-broadband multi-channel orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode generator using a helical long-period grating (HLPG) pair in a few-mode fiber. The numbers of the channel of the OAM mode generator can be flexibly adjusted by designing the cascaded length of the HLPG pair. When the cascaded length is 50 cm, the maximum channel number of OAM mode generator reaches 46, and the mode convert efficiencies of the channels are more than 90 %, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest number of channels among OAM mode converters. By reducing grating length and enhancing the refractive index modulation depth, the 3 dB bandwidth of the HLPG is significantly increased, and thus the wavelength range of the HLPG pair can be expanded. The maximum wavelength ranges of the channels with coupling efficiency greater than 90 % are measured to be 379 nm experimentally. By adjusting the spiral direction of the helical refractive index modulation, we can achieve multi-channel ± 1 order OAM mode conversion for each channel. The multi-channel OAM mode generator holds substantial potential for applications in mode division multiplexing systems, wavelength filters, and fiber sensing.

Abstract:A method to generate the optical vortex beam with arbitrary superposition of different orders of orbital angular momentum (OAM) on a photonic chip is proposed. The distributed Fourier holographic gratings are proposed to convert the propagating wave in waveguides to a vortex beam in the free space, and the components of different OAMs can be controlled by the amplitude and phases of on-chip incident light based on the principle of Fourier transformation. As an example, we studied a typical device composed of nine Fourier holographic gratings on fan-shaped waveguides. By scalar diffraction calculation, the OAM of the optical beam from the reconfigurable vortex beam generator can be controlled on-demand from -2nd to 2nd by adjusting the phase of input light fields, which is demonstrated numerically with the fidelity of generated optical vortex beam above 0.69. The working bandwidth of the Fourier holographic grating is about 80 nm with a fidelity above 0.6. Our work provides an feasible method to manipulate the vortex beam or detect arbitrary superposition of OAMs, which can be used in integrated photonics structures for optical trapping, signal processing, and imaging.

Abstract:A new method to generate and control the amplitude and phase distributions of a optical vortex beam is proposed. By introducing a holographic grating on top of the dielectric waveguide, the free space vortex beam and the in-plane guiding wave can be converted to each other. This microscale holographic grating is very robust against the variation of geometry parameters. The designed vortex beam generator can produce the target beam with a fidelity up to 0.93, and the working bandwidth is about 175 nm with the fidelity larger than 0.80. In addition, a multiple generator composed of two holographic gratings on two parallel waveguides are studied, which can perform an effective and flexible modulation on the vortex beam by controlling the phase of the input light. Our work opens a new avenue towards the integrated OAM devices with multiple degrees of optical freedom, which can be used for optical tweezers, micronano imaging, information processing, and so on.

Abstract:Optical vortices (OVs) carry the orbital angular momentum with arbitrary topological charges, which has excellent potential in optical communication, photonic integrated circuits, optical trapping, and so on. However, it remains to be solved generating arbitrary orders of adjustable optical vortices. Here, we propose a single-layer metal porous metasurface operating in infrared band for generating vortex beams from first to fourth order based on the spin-orbit interactions (SOI). The optical vortices with integral 2π phase are obtained through generating double geometric phase induced by structural element spin rotation. Further more, the new phenomenon of optical vortices emerging on the center has also been observed in our system, which is caused by the coupling of multi-channel same-order OVs. Our works possess wide applications in optical communication, multiplex and demultiplex systems, optical capture devices, and communication coding.

Abstract:Synergistic control of the frequency and orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light offers new opportunities for the generation of spatio-temporal optical waveforms and optical metrology. However, their physical realizations are typically bulky and complex owing to challenges in creating, manipulating and detecting mutually coherent, high-dimensional OAM states. Here we achieve combined control over the frequency and the OAM of a comb structure on a photonic chip. Dissipative optical solitons are formed in a nonlinear ring microresonator and emitted owing to engraved angular gratings, with each comb line carrying a distinct OAM. The beam of such a vortex soliton microcomb manifests dynamically revolving, double-helical intensity profiles. The one-to-one correspondence between the OAM and frequencies features a high extinction ratio of over 18.5 dB, enabling precision spectroscopy of optical vortices. Our work provides an integrated solution for realizing coherent light sources that are multiplexed in the spatial and frequency domains, with the potential to establish a new approach to the generation of high-dimensional structured light. Nonlinear microring resonators can generate a vortex soliton microcomb, that is, a frequency comb with each comb line carrying a distinct orbital angular momentum.

Abstract:In recent years, orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams and their generation methods have drawn increasing interest. Generating multiple OAMs in a three-dimensional space simply and efficiently is meaningful and challenging. Herein, we proposed an integrated multi-OAM generator based on the independent controlling phase division. Realized through the two-photon additive manufacturing, the device possesses a continuous surface with a diameter of 100 μm. Using the generator, arbitrary OAM modes were demonstrated, including the axial position, the number of topological charges, and the direction of rotation. The unique optical characteristics were mutually verified experimentally and through simulation. Vortex beams carrying multiple OAMs will provide more degrees of freedom to manipulate light for exciting applications such as optical communications, micromanipulation, and quantum optics.
On-demand flat-top wideband OAM mode converter based on a cladding-etched helical fiber grating

Abstract:A new method enabling to provide an on-demand flat-top wideband orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode converter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which is based on utilization of a cladding-etched helical long-period fiber grating (CEHLPG). By appropriately selecting the grating period and precisely controlling the diameter of the CEHLPG in-situ, both the radial order and central wavelength of the flat-top band for the generated OAM mode can be flexibly tailored according to specific requirements. As typical examples, the first azimuthal order OAM modes with a flat-top bandwidth of 95 nm at -20 dB, a central operating wavelength of ∼1500 nm, and the radial-orders of 9, 8, 5, and 2, respectively, have been demonstrated consecutively. The proposed method provides an excellent flexibility and robustness in controlling both the radial order and the central wavelength of the resulting flat-top wideband OAM mode conversion, which may support a variety of practical optical vortex applications.

Abstract:The capacity of an optical communication system can be greatly increased by using separate orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes as independent channels for signal transmission and encryption. At present, a transmissive OAM mode generator compatible with wavelength division multiplexing is being highly pursued. Here, we introduce a specific double-layer reverse-twist configuration into liquid crystal polymer (LCP) to overcome wavelength dependency. With this design, broadband-applicable OAM array generators are proposed and demonstrated. A Damman vortex grating and a Damman q-plate were encoded via photopatterning two subsequent LCP layers adopted with oppositely handed chiral dopants. Rectangular and hexagonal OAM arrays with mode conversion efficiencies exceeding 40.1% and 51.0% in the ranges of 530 to 930 nm, respectively, are presented. This provides a simple and broadband efficient strategy for beam shaping.
Spin-Orbit Coupling for Optical Vortex Generation in van der Waals Materials

Abstract:An optical vortex beam has attracted significant attention across diverse applications, including optical manipulation, phase-contrast microscopy, optical communication, and quantum photonics. To utilize vortex generators for integrated photonics, researchers have developed ultra-compact vortex generators using fork gratings, metasurfaces, and integrated microcombs. However, those devices depend on costly, time-consuming nanofabrication and are constrained by the low signal-to-noise ratio due to the fabrication error. As an alternative maneuver, spin-orbit coupling has emerged as a method to obtain the vortex beam by converting spin angular momentum (SAM) without nanostructures. Here, we demonstrate the creation of an optical vortex beam using van der Waals (vdW) materials. The significantly high birefringence of vdW materials allows generations of optical vortex beams with high efficiency in a sub-wavelength thickness. In this work, we utilize an 8-um-thick hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) crystal for the creation of optical vortices carrying topological charges of +2 and -2. We also present the generation of an optical vortex beam in a 320-nm-thick MoS2 crystal with a conversion efficiency of 0.09. This study paves the way for fabrication-less and ultra-compact optical vortex generators, which can be applied for integrated photonics and large-scale vortex generator arrays.

Abstract:Vortex beams can be used in optical communication, imaging, and processing applications. In this study, we generate a phased optical vortex array with high-order orbital angular momentum (OAM) based on a phased Gaussian optical array and high-order phase multiplication. We then analyze the OAM mode distribution using the OAM spectrum expansion, and the number of high-order phase singularities in the array verified in interference experiments. Our results substantiate the feasibility of generating a high-order optical vortex array using this method. At the same time, because the phase Gaussian optics array that forms the phased optical vortex array is discrete and separable, we can use the phase Gaussian optics array with different phase differences to generate the phased optical vortex array with different phase gradients. The shape of the generated optical vortex array can be arranged along any curve. The phase singularity and OAM distributions at high orders are also detailedly analyzed. The ability to control the high-order OAM and phase structure has possible applications in particle manipulation and free-space optical communication.

Abstract:By exploiting helical gratings (HGs), we propose and simulate flexible generation, conversion and exchange of fiber guided orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes. HGs can enable the generation of OAM modes, and the OAM conversion between two arbitrary modes guided in fibers. A specific HG can exchange the OAM states of a couple of OAM modes, i.e, OAM exchange. In addition, a Fabry Perot cavity cascaded with two identical reflective HGs can reflect converted OAM modes with a comb spectrum. The HGs based generation conversion and exchange of OAM modes are dependent on helix period, orientation, and the fold number of helical fringes. The proposed method of generation, conversion, and exchange of fiber guided OAM modes using HGs is flexible and well compatible with OAM fibers, featuring a high conversion efficiency close to 100% and a conversion bandwidth about 10 nm in transmission spectra, while less than 1 nm in reflection spectra.
