Abstract:Various δ-phosphinolactones (δ-phostines) are efficiently and diastereospecifically synthesized in good to excellent yields from direct [2 + 4] annulation of alkyl(phenyl)phosphinic chlorides and α,β-enones in the presence of LiHMDS. The annulation involves deprotonation, Michael addition, and nucleophilic substitution and features readily available materials, good to excellent yields, diastereospecificity, atom and step economy, wide substrate scope, easy separation, and mild conditions.

Abstract:A tandem coupling-ketooxygenation reaction of readily accessible enediyne-carboxylic compounds with inner alkynes has been developed that utilizes the PdCl2/CuBr2 catalytic system under an O2 atmosphere and assembles a class of isoindolinones and o-acylbenzoic acids. The two oxygen atoms are regioselectively incorporated into enediyne units at the 1- and 6-positions from atmospheric molecular oxygen and H2O, respectively, during the present process. This study uncovered a formal [4C + 2C] benzannulation-diketonization of enediynes and alkynes via a coupling and decoupling strategy.

Abstract:A novel palladium-catalyzed [4+3]-annulation of oxotryptamines with allyl dicarbonates has been developed. The reaction furnishes various spiro[azepane-4,3'-oxindoles] in moderate to excellent yields (30%-96%) with up to >20:1 Z/E ratio through a tandem allylic substitution strategy. This protocol enables the synthesis of a wide range of seven-membered spirocyclic oxindoles in high Z-selectivity. In addition, the gram-scale reaction and further derivatizations were also investigated, demonstrating the synthetic utility of this approach.

Abstract:The reaction of diazo(aryl)methyl(diaryl)phosphine oxides with aldehydes and ketones generates benzo-delta -phosphinolactones in low to good yields with 1,1-diarylalk-1-enes as byproducts under microwave irradiation. Diazo(aryl)methyl(diaryl)phosphine oxides first undergo a Wolff rearrangement to form diaryl(aryl)phosphenes, which further react with aldehydes and ketones to afford benzo-delta -phosphinolactones and beta -phosphinolactones. The latter are unstable under heating and fragment into the corresponding 1,1-diarylalk-1-enes and arylphosphine dioxides under reaction conditions. The arylphosphine dioxides become arylphosphonic acids during workup. The periselectivity in the annulation shows that the reaction of diaryl(aryl)phosphenes with most aldehydes and ketones favors phosphene phenyl participation in (4 + 2) annulation over (2 + 2) annulation.

Abstract:A highly diastereo- and enantioselective phosphine-catalyzed sequential [3 + 2]/[3 + 2] annulation of allenoates with arylidenemalononitriles has been developed. This reaction allows for the facile construction of multifunctionalized <i>cis</i>-fused bicyclic[3,3,0]octene scaffolds, encompassing three consecutive stereogenic centers with one quaternary carbon center, in a one-step operation from readily available materials. The reported protocol is scalable, operates under mild reaction conditions, and creates the core structural motif of a number of natural products.

Abstract:A new palladium-catalyzed annulative allylic alkylation (AAA) reaction of 2-(indol-2-yl)phenols with dual allylic electrophiles such as isobutylene dicarbonate and butene dicarbonate is described, leading to the regioselective synthesis of tetracyclic medium-sized cyclic ethers possessing a bridged aryl-indole scaffold, namely, benzo[2,3]oxocino[4,5-b]indoles and benzo[2,3]oxepino[4,5-b]indoles, in good to excellent yields. This protocol demonstrates a broad substrate scope, good compatibility with substituents and high regioselectivity, providing a catalytic and flexible method for creating bridged aryl-indole skeletons.

Abstract:A new palladium-catalyzed multicomponent dearomatization of arylamines with CO and propargylic acetates for the synthesis of bridged polycyclic lactams is described. This method allows double annulation at the ipso and para positions of the amino group to form four new bonds, three C-C bonds and one C-N bond. DFT calculations and experimental studies indicate that the efficient formation of the allenecarboxanilide intermediate is the key step to achieve the dearomative transformation.

Abstract:The efficient synthesis of 4-hydroxy-3-arylindolin-2-ones via phosphoric acid-mediated annulation of various β-nitrostyrenes and 1,3-cyclohexanedione is described. This annulation reaction gives a practical method for affording a diverse set of oxindoles, having simple experimentation, readily available starting materials, and very good yields. Additionally, substituted 1,3-cyclohexanediones under the same conditions afforded tetrahydrobenzofuran oxime compounds.

Abstract:Direct annulation of benzoic acids with phenols via palladium-catalyzed oxidative coupling is reported. Readily available and inexpensive starting materials were used in this novel method to synthesize highly valuable and useful dibenzopyranone scaffolds. Broad substrate scope and simple operation make this method potentially practical. Preliminary mechanistic studies were conducted to understand this chemistry and inspire new designs of oxidative coupling of different functionalized arenes.
