Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite (OIHP) materials have received extensive attention from the scientific community because they have shown vigorous vitality and broad exploration space in the fields of photovoltaic, light-emitting diodes and intelligent switches. Based on the relationship between the structure and the property, the internal structure of the material often directly affects its physical and chemical properties, such as electrical and optical performances. Up to now, OIHPs with one solid-solid phase transition behavior have been widely studied and reported. However, multi-functional OIHPs possessing two-step dielectric response coupled with photoluminescence properties are rarely reported. Here, we report two multi-functional hybrid materials [(BTA)2MnCl2.4Br1.6] (compound 1) and [(BTA)2MnCl4] (compound 2)( BTA = 3-bromopropyltrimethylamonium). Both compounds undergo two sequential structure transitions, accompanying remarkably bistable dielectric responses. Moreover, compounds 1 and 2 can emit bright green light under 365 nm lamp with photoluminescence decay lifetimes of 0.153 ms and 0.198 ms, respectively. Notably, the photoluminescence quantum yield of compound 1 is further improved compared with that of compound 2. These two-step reversible dielectric switching materials with photoluminescence property will provide a new case and guidance for further research and exploration of multi-step dielectric switching multifunctional materials in the application of sensors.

Multicolor Zinc(II)‐Coordinated Hydrazone‐Based Bistable Photoswitches for Rewritable Transparent Luminescent Labels

Abstract:Repeatable printing of invisible multicolor luminescence patterns with long retention times on transparent substrates is of significant importance, but it remains a formidable challenge. Here, two novel hydrazone-based on/off fluorescent photoswitches with decent emission quantum efficiencies, good reversible photoisomerization properties, and extremely long thermal half-lives, were designed and synthesized. Excitingly, X-ray crystallography data of both Z and E isomers of one hydrazone-based photoswitch were obtained. Multiple emission colors of blue, cyan, green, yellow, and orange can be obtained readily for these two photoswitches upon coordination with various zinc salts. Moreover, the photo-controlled rewritable printing of invisible multicolor images with high resolution was achieved by using these photoswitches. Importantly, the legibility of the printed patterns can last at least over 3 months without detectable emission intensity loss under ambient conditions.

Abstract:With the expansion and deepening of scientific research, dual-functional or multifunctional materials are urgently needed to replace those for single application. Herein, a fluorescence sensing system based on an In(III)-organic complex with in situ Lewis acid sites has been constructed, exhibiting high sensitivity for the detection of Fe(III) ions with a low detection limit of 3.95 μM and a short response time of within 10 s. It is noteworthy that the quenched fluorescence of the Fe(III)-incorporated sample could be reopened linearly with an increase of alkalinity, followed by the reactivation of its functionality to identify Fe(III) ions, forming an alternate detection cycle for Fe(III) and pH with off-on-off fluorescent switch characteristics. Considering its unique molecular recognition capability, an advanced three-input (Fe(III), EDTA, and OH-) and two-output (B440 and G489) Boolean logic operation comprising BUFF, NOT, OR, and AND logic gates was integrated, possessing potential applications in intelligent multianalyte sensing systems.

Abstract:The integration of switchable dielectrics and luminescent properties holds significant application potential in the emerging sensing and optoelectronic devices. Despite great progress in various colours such as green, red, or yellow lights, the dielectric switching response equipped with intrinsic broadband white-light emission in a single material has been very rare and an ongoing challenge. Here, we present an organic-inorganic hybrid crystal (TMPA) 2 SnCl 6 (TMPA =3-Methoxypropylamine), which simultaneously exhibits dual-channel electric/optical response with switchable dielectric biostability and broadband white light emission. This is a rare phenomenon among the reported switchable dielectric materials. Additionally, its analogue (TMPA) 2 SnBr 6 displays thermochromic phenomenon that related to the temperature dependent [SnBr 6 ] octahedral distortion. This work would provide constructive insights for exploring the integration of dual-channel optical/electrical response characteristics in a single material at molecular level.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of a smart novel hybrid with reversible photoswitchable luminescence properties modulated by light. The combination of a low molecular weight organogelator (LMOG) and CdSe/ZnS core–shell semiconductor nanoparticles capped with trioctylphosphine oxide ligands produces a luminescent, stable and transparent material. Modulation of the luminescence properties was successfully achieved using a diarylethene photochromic compound, with good resistance to fatigue ca. 22 cycles. Interestingly, the morphology of the organogel fibers was preserved in the hybrid, while a partial luminescence quenching of the nanoparticle was observed. This material could have implication for on-and-off photoswitching applications.

Abstract:Organic–inorganic hybrids have attracted wide attention due to the advantages of a designable structure and adjustable function. Among these, phase-transition hybrids can exhibit a variety of properties such as switchable dielectric and optical properties due to their rich chemical adjustability, stable physical properties, and distinct structural features, thus forming stimuli-responsive multifunctional materials. However, how to achieve multifunctional coupling of hybrid materials is still a big challenge. Herein, we have successfully synthesized a phase-transition structure [FPEA]2CdCl4 (FPEA=3-fluorophenethylamine), which undergoes a first-order phase transition at a high temperature of 380.4 K. The phase transition stems from the ordered–disordered dynamic motions of protonated cations and slight distortion of the inorganic framework. Notably, the compound improves the reversible switching of both dielectric and nonlinear optical (NLO) responses. At the same time, [FPEA]2CdCl4 shows broadband luminescence with a photoluminescence quantum yield of 31.07%. The multiple responses exhibited tremendous vitality and wide scope for exploration in sensors, smart switches, light-emitting diodes, and nonlinear optical devices.

Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence of Aggregates Induced by Strong Π–π Interactions and Reversible Dual-Responsive Luminescence Switching

Abstract:A reversible dual-responsive luminescent material was introduced by our group to show the simultaneous color and lifetime switching in response to external stimuli. Pristine crystalline powder of (E)-2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-3-(pyren-1-yl)acrylonitrile (Py-BZTCN) shows the ordered pi-pi stacking with only near-monomer-normal orange-yellow fluorescence, but it exhibits red emission with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) after grinding, which can be reversibly recovered by heating or fuming treatment. Grinding disturbs the ordered pi-pi stacking of pristine powder, leading to the formation of small aggregates with compressed distance and increased overlap of pi-pi stacking between adjacent molecules. The cause of switching was verified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments of two corresponding crystals. This strong ir ir interaction effectively promotes the excited-state energy splitting and substantially decreases the singlet-triplet energy gap (Delta E-ST) of aggregates, resulting in the red TADF emission of aggregates through reverse intersystem crossing. This finding proposes a new route to realizing the TADF emission of aggregates through strong intermolecular interactions based on non-TADF monomer, thereby enabling a novel high-contrast dual-responsive luminescence switching. Abstract:Hybrid metal halides are an emerging class of highly efficient photoluminescent (PL) materials. However, very few of them show reversible on–off PL switching under external stimuli and have the potential to perform as next-generation intelligent materials with applications in cutting-edge photoelectric devices. Herein, we report single crystal-to-single crystal (SC–SC) structural and PL transitions among three 0D hybrid antimony halides, namely, nonemissive α-[DHEP]SbCl5 (1), yellow-emissive β-[DHEP]SbCl5·2H2O (2), and red-emissive β-[DHEP]SbCl5 (3), by a dynamic phonon-engineering strategy. The reversible SC–SC transformation between 1 and 2 is triggered by acetone or methanol, affording the reversible PL on–off switching. The transition between yellow-emissive and red-emissive solids is achieved by the reversible SC–SC transformation between 2 and 3 through the process of removal/adsorption of guest water molecules. Meanwhile, the 3 to 1 transition is performed by the introduction of methanol, which is accompanied by the quenching of red emission. Therefore, a triple-mode reversible PL off–onI–onII–off switching is realized in metal halide hybrids for the first time, including the off–onI (yellow), color-tunable onI–onII (yellow-red), and onII–off (red) modes. More importantly, the reversible PL switching in 0D hybrid antimony halides make them suitable for successful applications in the protection and anti-counterfeiting of confidential information as well as in optical logic gates.

Abstract:A photo‐switched supramolecular luminescent assembly is constructed, showing both aggregation‐induced emission and photo/chemical dual responsive properties. Such orthogonal stimulations allow for photo‐induced fluorescence on/off and locking/unlocking information by base/acid treatment, with apparent fluorescent self‐feedback. This study realizes the rarely reported but very important locking/unlocking information of photo‐controlled fluorescence and self‐feedback functions, providing a promising step for multifunctional intelligent supramolecular luminescent devices. The development of multifunctional photo‐controlled luminescent switch, which provides versatile tools for smart systems and advanced organic luminescent materials, is of paramount significance. Herein, a photoswitchable supramolecular assembly is constructed from the noncovalent interaction of cyanostilbene‐bridged bis(dibenzo‐24‐crown‐8) with a diarylethene derivative. Possessing the reversible photoisomerization property and a high Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency, the resultant supramolecular assembly can reversibly switch on/off the luminescence of the cyanostilbene group upon irradiation by different wavelength light and the addition of acid/base both in solution and in the solid state. Significantly, the characters written with the supramolecular assembly as ink can be reversibly and repeatedly erased and recovered by altering the wavelength of irradiation light.

Abstract:We reported herein a smart material (BCLC-FM) with tunable emission by combining a fluorescent molecule (FM) with a bent-core liquid crystal (BCLC). The photoluminescence of BCLC-FM could be modulated in two distinct switching ways by changing the transmittance under different electric fields. The two distinct operating modes are interchangeable and thermoerasable, which may provide a novel designing strategy to realize the multiswitching modes of photoluminescence of organic compounds.
Dual-Switching Electrochromism and Electrofluorochromism Derived from Diphenylamine-Based Polyamides with Spirobifluorene/Pyrene as Bridged Fluorescence Units.

Abstract:Electrochromic (EC)/electrofluorochromic (EFC) bifunctional materials are receiving great attention because of their promising applications in optoelectronic devices. However, the development of ideal EC/EFC bifunctional materials is still a great challenge because of the poor integration of EC/EFC performances (optical contrast, response speed, and switching stability). Herein, we reported two novel diphenylamine-based mixed valence (MV) polyamides (S-HPA and P-HPA) with spirobifluorene (2,7-positions) and pyrene (1,6-positions) as bridged fluorescence units, respectively, showing impressive cyclability and fluorescence contrast with rapid switching. Through the formation of an effective electronic coupling between the two nitrogen centers using spirobifluorene/pyrene bridges, we demonstrated that different bridges have significant effects on the thermal and electrooptical characteristics of polyamides. In addition to lower fluorescence quantum yield and glass transition temperature, the S-HPA exhibited superior cyclability (contrast change <3.4%/14% over 500/300 cycles for EC/EFC switching), higher color/fluorescence contrast (64%/304%), and faster switching time (<2.6 s), mainly owing to the shorter conjugated length and more twisted configuration of the spirobifluorene bridge. The design principle of MV polymers with fluorophore bridges proposed here will be a promising way to realize high-performance EC/EFC devices and will also provide new insights into their future development and applications.

Stepwise Crystalline Structural Transformation in 0D Hybrid Antimony Halides with Triplet Turn-on and Color-Adjustable Luminescence Switching

Abstract:Intelligent stimuli-responsive fluorescence materials are extremely pivotal for fabricating luminescent turn-on switching in solid-state photonic integration technology, but it remains a challenging objective for typical 3-dimensional (3D) perovskite nanocrystals. Herein, by fine-tuning the accumulation modes of metal halide components to dynamically control the carrier characteristics, a novel triple-mode photoluminescence (PL) switching was realized in 0D metal halide through stepwise single-crystal to single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation. Specifically, a family of 0D hybrid antimony halides was designed to exhibit three distinct types of PL performance including nonluminescent [Ph 3 EtP] 2 Sb 2 Cl 8 ( 1 ), yellow-emissive [Ph 3 EtP] 2 SbCl 5 ·EtOH ( 2 ), and red-emissive [Ph 3 EtP] 2 SbCl 5 ( 3 ). Upon stimulus of ethanol, 1 was successfully converted to 2 through SC-SC transformation with enhanced PL quantum yield from ~0% to 91.50% acting as “turn-on” luminescent switching. Meanwhile, reversible SC-SC and luminescence transformation between 2 and 3 can be also achieved in the ethanol impregnation–heating process as luminescence vapochromism switching. As a consequence, a new triple-model turn-on and color-adjustable luminescent switching of off–on I –on II was realized in 0D hybrid halides. Simultaneously, wide advanced applications were also achieved in anti-counterfeiting, information security, and optical logic gates. This novel photon engineering strategy is expected to deepen the understanding of dynamic PL switching mechanism and guide development of new smart luminescence materials in cutting-edge optical switchable device.

Abstract:A thermo-and pH-dual responsive luminescent hydrogel was successfully constructed by coupling dysprosium-containing polyoxometalates Na 9 DyW 10 O 36 (DyW 10 ) with the ABA triblock copolymer, where the B block is PEO and the A block is the thermosensitive poly(methoxydi(ethylene glycol) methacrylate-co-N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate). The complex hybrid underwent a sol-gel phase transition above the lower critical solution temperature(LCST) of the A block. DyW 10 was electrostatically encapsulated into the hydrophobic domain of the A block with enhanced photoluminescence. When temperature cooled down, the luminescence could be restored. By addition of acids to protonate the A block, and emission of DyW 10 was simultaneously enhanced. Sensitivity of poly(N,N-dimethy laminoethyl methacrylate)(PDMAEMA) to pH also enabled the emission of DyW 10 /copolymer hydrogel to be reversibly switched by alternating acid/base treatments.
Construction of a Reversible Solid-state Fluorescence Switching Via Photochromic Diarylethene and Si-ZnO Quantum Dots

Abstract:Developing fluorescence switching as functional system is highly desirable for potential applications in the fields of light-responsive materials or devices. Attempt to construct fluorescence switching system tend to focus on the high fluorescence modulation efficiency, especially in solid state. Herein, a photo-controlled fluorescence switching system was constructed with photochromic diarylethene and trimethoxysilane modified zinc oxide quantum dots (Si-ZnO QDs) successfully. It was verified by the measurement of modulation efficiency, fatigue resistance as well as theoretical calculation. Upon irradiation with UV/Vis lights, the system exhibited excellent photochromic property and photo-controlled fluorescence switching performance. Furthermore, the excellent fluorescence switching characters could also be realized in solid state and the fluorescence modulation efficiency was determined to be 87.4%. The results will provide new strategies to the construction of reversible solid-state photo-controlled fluorescence switching for the application in the fields of optical data storage and security labels.

Abstract:The search for feasible strategies to construct molecular materials whose physical properties can be modulated dynamically by external stimuli, especially light for sunlight is the cleanest and most abundantly renewable energy source, has attracted increasing attention owing to their promising application in the field of detection, photo-electronic devices, information storage, etc. As a key branch, crystalline photochromic materials are usually formed by the combination of organic photoresponsive molecules and inorganic functional units. Under the stimuli of light, the changes of structures and some physical properties could occur, which provides a platform to develop photoswitching smart materials. To further promote the understanding and development of crystalline photochromic materials, in this review, we mainly focus on the representative smart photochromic hybrids with fast and stable multi-stimuli responsive behavior or with various switchable functions. In detail, in the first unit, the common design and synthesis strategy of crystalline photoresponsive materials will be demonstrated. The second section will introduce photochromic hybrids with novel structures and enhanced performance (multi-stimuli responsive, responsive rate). And the third section will present photochromic hybrids with photo-modulated luminescence (fluorescence, phosphorescence), photomagnetism, photoconductivity, photothermal conversion, or photoswitchable gas uptake behavior. Finally, the future challenges and opportunities for the development of photoresponsive smart hybrids will be addressed.

Abstract:Charge-transfer (CT) complexes of 4,4′-bis(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-1,1′-biphenyl (CBP) and three acceptors emitted cyan, green, and orange fluorescence, and lower LUMO energy levels of the acceptors promoted longer emission wavelengths. Moreover, they could reversibly convert their luminescent colors under force and then fuming by chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents. Amazingly, acetonitrile vapor annealing might decompose CT complexes to form a pure CBP crystalline phase, which induced sharp changes in the fluorescence colors. As a result, the largest emission shift was more than 220 nm. CT complexes could also be formed through pressing a mixture of a donor and acceptor, and the emission color gradually changed from blue to cyan, green, white, yellow, orange, and even red with extended grinding time, realizing a full color luminescence in the visible light region. Due to their excellent stimuli-responsive behaviors, anticounterfeiting papers with two fluorescent colors have been constructed. Moreover, the fluorescence colors of papers could be reversibly transformed under solvent annealing treatment. High-resolution patterns in both papers might be written by a stylus printer and be erased by solvent fuming with high reversibility.
