Abstract:Abstract The terrestrial carbon sink has significantly increased in the past decades, but the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. The current synthesis of process-based estimates of land and ocean sinks requires an additional sink of 0.6 PgC yr −1 in the last decade to explain the observed airborne fraction. A concurrent global fire decline was observed in association with tropical agriculture expansion and landscape fragmentation. Here we show that a decline of 0.2 ± 0.1 PgC yr −1 in fire emissions during 2008–2014 relative to 2001–2007 also induced an additional carbon sink enhancement of 0.4 ± 0.2 PgC yr −1 attributable to carbon cycle feedbacks, amounting to a combined sink increase comparable to the 0.6 PgC yr −1 budget imbalance. Our results suggest that the indirect effects of fire, in addition to the direct emissions, is an overlooked mechanism for explaining decadal-scale changes in the land carbon sink and highlight the importance of fire management in climate mitigation.

Abstract:Intense regional fires are a common occurrence in the context of climate warming and have progressively evolved into one of the major natural disasters in terrestrial ecosystems, posing a serious hazard to the atmosphere and climate change. We investigated the spatial distribution, intensity, emission changes, and meteorological differences between fires in different fire-active and fire-prone regions globally based on multi-source satellite remote sensing fire data, emission data, and meteorological data in order to better understand the change trend of fire activity at multiple spatial and temporal scales. The findings demonstrate that while the burned area (BA) has decreased slowly over the last 20 years, the burned fraction (BF), the fire count (FC), and the fire radiative power (FRP) all exhibit pronounced regional and seasonal variations. The physical characteristics of fires, including the BF, FC, and FRP, experience greater seasonal variation as latitude increases, with summer and autumn being the seasons with the most frequent fire occurrence worldwide. This study also shows that the emissions declined substantially between 2012 and 2020 in northern Canada, Alaska, and northeastern China, whereas it notably increased in the Siberia region during the same period, primarily due to a rise in summer emissions. The results based on classification show that the difference in CO2 produced by fires among regions is relatively small. Excluding CO2, aerosol emissions (the total of organic carbon (OC), total carbon (TC), black carbon (BC)) ranged from 78.6 % to 84.2 %, while the least significant air pollutants (the total of PM2.5, SO2, and NOx) ranged from 5.8 % to 11.7 %. The abundance of vegetation predominately affects the intensity change in fire development, while the weather conditions can also indirectly influence the incidence of fire by altering the growth condition of vegetation. Correspondingly, the increase in temperature in the Northern Hemisphere's middle- and high-latitude forest regions is likely the major cause for the increase in fires and emissions, while the change in fires in tropical regions was largely influenced by the decrease in precipitation and relative humidity. This study contributes to the understanding of regional variations in fire activity and emission variability and provides support for the control of fire activity across regions and seasons.

Abstract:Fire behaviour is changing in many regions worldwide. However, nonlinear interactions between fire weather, fuel, land use, management and ignitions have impeded formal attribution of global burned area changes. Here, we demonstrate that climate change increasingly explains regional burned area patterns, using an ensemble of global fire models. The simulations show that climate change increased global burned area by 15.8% (95% confidence interval (CI) [13.1–18.7]) for 2003–2019 and increased the probability of experiencing months with above-average global burned area by 22% (95% CI [18–26]). In contrast, other human forcings contributed to lowering burned area by 19.1% (95% CI [21.9–15.8]) over the same period. Moreover, the contribution of climate change to burned area increased by 0.22% (95% CI [0.22–0.24]) per year globally, with the largest increase in central Australia. Our results highlight the importance of immediate, drastic and sustained GHG emission reductions along with landscape and fire management strategies to stabilize fire impacts on lives, livelihoods and ecosystems.

Abstract:Fire is a major type of disturbance that has important influences on ecosystem dynamics and carbon cycles. Yet our understanding of ecosystem fires and their carbon cycle consequences is still limited, largely due to the difficulty of large-scale fire monitoring and the complex interactions between fire, vegetation, climate, and anthropogenic factors. Here, using data from satellite-derived fire observations and ecosystem model simulations, we performed a comprehensive investigation of the spatial and temporal dynamics of China's ecosystem fire disturbances and their carbon emissions over the past two decades (1997–2016). Satellite-derived results showed that on average about 3.47-4.53 × 104 km2 of the land was burned annually during the past two decades, among which annual burned forest area was about 0.81 - 1.25 × 104 km2, accounting for 0.33-0.51％ of the forest area in China. Biomass burning emitted about 23.02 TgC per year. Compared to satellite products, simulations from the Energy Exascale Earth System Land Model (ELM) strongly overestimated China's burned area and fire-induced carbon emissions. Annual burned area and fire-induced carbon emissions were high for boreal forest in Northeast China's Daxing'anling region and subtropical dry forest in South Yunnan, as revealed by both the satellite product and the model simulations. Our results suggest that climate and anthropogenic factors play critical roles in controlling the spatial and seasonal distribution of China's ecosystem fire disturbances. Our findings highlight the importance of multiple complementary approaches in assessing ecosystem fire disturbance and its carbon consequences. Further studies are required to improve the methods of observing and modelling China's ecosystem fire disturbances, which will provide valuable information for fire management and ecosystem sustainability in an era when both human activities and the natural environment are rapidly changing.

Abstract:The large peatland carbon stocks in the land use change-affected areas of equatorial Asia are vulnerable to fire. Combining satellite observations of active fire, burned area, and atmospheric concentrations of combustion tracers with a Bayesian inversion, we estimated the amount and variability of fire carbon emissions in equatorial Asia over the period 1997-2015. Emissions in 2015 were of 0.510.17Pg carbonless than half of the emissions from the previous 1997 extreme El Nino, explained by a less acute water deficit. Fire severity could be empirically hindcasted from the cumulative water deficit with a lead time of 1 to 2months. Based on CMIP5 climate projections and an exponential empirical relationship found between fire carbon emissions and water deficit, we infer a total fire carbon loss ranging from 12 to 25Pg by 2100 which is a significant positive feedback to climate warming.

Abstract:<p>Recent long and intensive wildfire seasons in many regions have highlighted the urgency to understand the shift in worldwide fire regimes, raising the question if human induced climate change has played a role therein. However, attributing changes in fire to anthropogenic climate change is difficult, since possible signals are confounded by multiple drivers including fire weather, fuel availability and sources of ignition. Therefore, fire indices or individual input variables are often used as proxies. There have been some attempts to model drivers of recent trends in fire, though assessment of overall anthropogenic climate change is still lacking. Recent integration of fire models into ISIMIP now allow us to perform a fire impact attribution analysis using multiple coupled fire-vegetation models. Here, we combine both ISIMIP factual and counterfactual simulations with remote sensed observations to understand how burnt area has changed over the historical period due to a changing climate.</p>
Spatial and Temporal Variation of Air Pollutant Emissions from Forest Fires in China

Abstract:Warm and dry climate conditions favor the occurrence of forest fires. Forest burning leads to the discharge of large amounts of particles and trace gases that play an important role in air quality degradation and have impact on human health. To date, most studies on China's forest fire emissions have concentrated in certain regions, also with a relatively coarse temporal resolution. In this study, we used the INteractive Fire and Emission algoRithm for Natural envirOnments (INFERNO), as well as high-resolution land cover data to compile a forest fire emission inventory for China in 2020. The variations of forest combustion emissions were then analyzed at the provincial and seasonal level. The results show that forest fires were concentrated in southern China and northeastern China, which are in agreement with MODIS observations. Total CO2, CO, CH4, NOx, SO2, PM2.5, OC, and BC emissions were estimated to be 3.06 x 10(4), 1.87 x 10(3), 96.92, 34.95, 13.84, 208, 116.03, and 9.95 Gg, respectively. Provinces with higher emissions were found in Yunnan, Guangdong, Hunan, and Sichuan. Peak emission from forest fire occurred in spring and winter, mainly from January to April, during which contributed 70% of the total forest fire contaminants emissions. The algorithm used in this study can be easily coupled in the meteorological model and air quality model to estimate the occurrence of fire and calculate pollutant emission online. This study updated emissions information that may support future research and policy development on greenhouse gas reduction and air pollution control.
Global rise in forest fire emissions linked to climate change in the extratropics

Abstract:Climate change increases fire-favorable weather in forests, but fire trends are also affected by multiple other controlling factors that are difficult to untangle. We use machine learning to systematically group forest ecoregions into 12 global forest pyromes, with each showing distinct sensitivities to climatic, human, and vegetation controls. This delineation revealed that rapidly increasing forest fire emissions in extratropical pyromes, linked to climate change, offset declining emissions in tropical pyromes during 2001 to 2023. Annual emissions tripled in one extratropical pyrome due to increases in fire-favorable weather, compounded by increased forest cover and productivity. This contributed to a 60% increase in forest fire carbon emissions from forest ecoregions globally. Our results highlight the increasing vulnerability of forests and their carbon stocks to fire disturbance under climate change.

Fire effects on soil carbon cycling pools in forest ecosystems: A global meta-analysis

Abstract:Changes in soil carbon (C) pools driven by fire in forest ecosystems remain equivocal, especially at a global scale. In this study we analyzed data from 232 studies consisting of 1702 observations to investigate whether ecosystem type, climate zone, stand age, soil depth, slope, elevation, and the time since fire in influence of forest soil carbon pools to fire regime (fire type, fire season, fire intensity). Additionally, we explored the potential mechanisms of the relationships between multiple response variables to the fire using linear regression and random forest models. On aggregate, fires significantly increased the mean effect sizes of several key soil carbon cycling components-including microbial biomass carbon (MBC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total carbon (TC), pyrogenic carbon (PyC), soil organic matter (SOM), soil organic carbon (SOC) by 0.77, 0.89, 0.87, 1.22, 0.97 and 0.93, respectively, compared to unburned forests ecosystems. However, the fire effects on soil C pools vary widely between environmental factors and duration, and are mediated by factors such as tree species, fire type, and soil layer. A correlation analysis displayed the effects of fire on MBC and DOC were significantly and negatively correlated with elevation. Fire effects on the forest floor and mineral soil indicated significantly increased PyC. SOC and TC in coniferous tree species are the most sensitive to fires, thereby altering important feedback relationships with the fire-vegetatale-climate system. Interestingly, latitude has a stronger influence on SOC than mean annual precipitation or elevation, indicating that variations in latitude play a significant role in regulating the amount of SOC in forest ecosystems. Overall, the results illustrated geographic variation in fire effects on soil C cycling underscores the need for region-specific fire management plans, and help us understand the responses of soil C cycling to fire in forest ecosystems, and facilitate decision-making to forest fire management.

Abstract:Northern Eurasia is currently highly sensitive to climate change. Fires in this region can have significant impacts on regional air quality, radiative forcing and black carbon deposition in the Arctic which can accelerate ice melting. Using a MODIS-derived burned area dataset, we report that the total annual area burned in this region declined by 53%during the 15-year period from 2002 to 2016. Grassland fires dominated this trend, accounting for 93% of the decline in the total area burned. Grassland fires in Kazakhstan contributed 47%of the total area burned and 84%of the decline. A wetter climate and increased grazing are the principle driving forces for the decline. Our findings (1) highlight the importance of the complex interactions of climate-vegetation-land use in affecting fire activity and (2) reveal how the resulting impacts on fire activity in a relatively small region such as Kazakhstan can dominate the trends in burned areas across a much larger landscape of northern Eurasia.
The contribution of fire to a global increase in forest loss

Abstract:<p>Fire is one of the main drivers of forest loss worldwide and its role varies depending on natural and anthropogenic drivers, ranging from large boreal wildfires to smallholder shifting agriculture. The emergence of higher resolution satellite data creates new opportunities for studying the spatial and temporal relatedness of fires and forest loss. We have quantified this relatedness by overlapping global forest loss for 2001-2018 with fire detections from burned area and active fire satellite products at 500 m resolution. Previous studies have shown that global burned area is decreasing, mostly caused by increased human influence in savanna ecosystems. However, the opposite is true for forests: our study of trends and variability shows that forest loss has increased substantially over the last two decades in many parts of the world and that its dynamics are strongly linked to fire. Striking increases in forest loss were found for rapidly developing regions such as Africa and Southeast Asia, where commodity-driven deforestation and shifting agriculture have led to increased land clearing, often with the use of fire. Besides, stand-replacing wildfire activity has increased in boreal, temperate and tropical forests. The increase in fire activity in forests and decrease in savannas shows that the global balance is shifting because of both natural and anthropogenic factors, with important consequences for the future carbon cycle.</p>

Abstract:Fire is a widespread phenomenon that plays an important role in Earth's ecosystems. This study investigated the global spatiotemporal patterns of burned areas, daytime and nighttime fire counts, and fire radiative power (FRP) from 2001 to 2020. The month with the largest burned area, daytime fire count, and FRP presented a bimodal distribution worldwide, with dual peaks in early spring (April) and summer (July and August), while the month with the largest nighttime fire count and FRP showed a unimodal distribution, with a peak in July. Although the burned area showed decline at the global scale, a significant increase occurred in temperate and boreal forest regions, where nighttime fire occurrence and intensity have consistently increased in recent years. The relationships among burned area, fire count, and FRP were further quantified in 12 typical fire-prone regions. The burned area and fire count exhibited a humped relationship with FRP in most tropical regions, whereas the burned area and fire count constantly increased when the FRP was below approximately 220 MW in temperate and boreal forest regions. Meanwhile, the burned area and FRP generally increased with the fire count in most fire-prone regions, indicating an increased risk of more intense and larger fires as the fire count increased. The spatiotemporal dynamics of burned areas for different land cover types were also explored in this study. The results suggest that the burned areas in forest, grassland, and cropland showed dual peaks in April and from July to September while the burned areas in shrubland, bareland, and wetlands usually peaked in July or August. Significant increases in forest burned area were observed in temperate and boreal forest regions, especially in the western U.S. and Siberia, whereas significant increases in cropland burned area were found in India and northeastern China.

Abstract:Extreme wildfires are becoming more common and increasingly affecting Earth's climate. Wildfires in boreal forests have attracted much less attention than those in tropical forests, although boreal forests are one of the most extensive biomes on Earth and are experiencing the fastest warming. We used a satellite-based atmospheric inversion system to monitor fire emissions in boreal forests. Wildfires are rapidly expanding into boreal forests with emerging warmer and drier fire seasons. Boreal fires, typically accounting for 10% of global fire carbon dioxide emissions, contributed 23% (0.48 billion metric tons of carbon) in 2021, by far the highest fraction since 2000. 2021 was an abnormal year because North American and Eurasian boreal forests synchronously experienced their greatest water deficit. Increasing numbers of extreme boreal fires and stronger climate-fire feedbacks challenge climate mitigation efforts.
Estimates of Global Forest Fire Carbon Emissions Using FY-3 Active Fires Product

Abstract:Carbon emissions from forest fires release large amounts of carbon and have important implications for the global and regional carbon cycle and atmospheric carbon concentrations. Considering the significant spatial and temporal variations in different forest fires, this study explores the relationship between different forests and carbon emissions from forest fires. This study developed a high-resolution (0.05° × 0.05°) daily global inventory of carbon emissions from biomass burning during 2016–2022. The inventory estimates of carbon emissions from biomass burning are based on the newly released FY-3 data product, satellite and observational data of biomass density, and spatial and temporal variable combustion factors. Forest fire carbon emissions were assessed using active fire data from FY-3 series satellites from 2016 to 2022, and it was linearly compared with GFED, FEER, and GFAS data on time and spatial scales with R2 of 0.7, 0.73, and 0.69, respectively. The results show spatial patterns of forest cover and carbon emissions, with South America, Africa, South-East Asia, and northern Asia as high-emission zones. The analysis shows an overall upward trend in global forest fire carbon emissions over the study period. Different types of forests exhibited specific emission patterns and temporal variations. For example, most needleleaf forest fires occur in areas with low tree cover, while broadleaf forest fires tend to occur in areas with high tree cover. The study showed that there was a relationship between inter-annual trends in forest fire carbon emissions and land cover, with biomass burning occurring mainly in the range of 60–70% tree cover. However, there were also differences between evergreen broadleaf forest, evergreen needleleaf forest, deciduous broadleaf forest, deciduous needleleaf forest, and mixed forest indicating the importance of considering differences in forest types when estimating emissions. This study identifies the main sources of carbon emissions from forest fires globally, which will help policymakers to take more targeted measures to reduce carbon emissions and provide a reliable basis for appropriate measures and directions in future carbon mitigation actions.

Abstract:Fire carbon emissions over Equatorial Asia (EQAS) play a critical role in the global carbon cycle. Most regional fire emissions (89.0%) occur in the dry season, but how changes in the dry-season length affect the fire emissions remains poorly understood. Here we show that, the length of the EQAS dry season has decreased significantly during 1979–2021, and the delayed dry season onset (5.4 ± 1.6 (± one standard error) days decade −1 ) due to increased precipitation (36.4 ± 9.1 mm decade −1 ) in the early dry season is the main reason. The dry season length is strongly correlated with the length of the fire season. Increased precipitation during the early dry season led to a significant reduction (May: −0.7 ± 0.4 Tg C decade −1 ; August: −12.9 ± 6.7 Tg C decade −1 ) in fire carbon emissions during the early and peak fire season. Climate models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 project a continued decline in future dry season length in EQAS under medium and high-emission scenarios, implying further reductions in fire carbon emissions.

Abstract:Satellite estimates of burned area, associated carbon monoxide (CO) emission estimates, and CO column retrievals do not agree on the peak fire month in Africa, evident in both Northern and Southern Africa though distinct in the burning seasonality. Here we analyze this long‐standing problem using (1) a top‐down Bayesian inversion of Measurements Of Pollution In The Troposphere CO columns during 2005–2016 into surface CO emissions and (2) the bottom‐up Global Fire Emissions Database 4.1 s. We show that Global Fire Emissions Database 4.1 s underestimates CO emissions by 12–62% in the late fire season and hypothesize that this is partly because it assumes seasonally static emission factors. However, the degree to which emission factors would have to vary through the season to bring top‐down and bottom‐up in agreement cannot be confirmed by past field‐based measurements. Improved observational constraint on the seasonality of burned area, fuel combustion, and emission factors would further reduce the discrepancy between bottom‐up and top‐down emission estimates.

Abstract:Significant increase in boreal forest fires during 1999–2022 and the underlying climate driver. Biomass burning (BB) as an important atmospheric carbon source has significant environmental and climatic influence. The frequent extreme BB cases in recent years have raised extensive concerns, yet the latest changes in BB emission on a global scale are not fully understood. Here, we systematically quantify the changes in BB carbon emission for 1999–2022 by fire types and on different scales based on the Global Fire Emissions Database with small fires (GFED4s) dataset. We find contrasting trends of savanna and boreal forest fires persistent over the study period, shaping the variation of global total BB carbon emission. The receding savanna fire drives a declining global BB carbon emission at −8 Tg C year−1 (−0.4% year−1) for 1999–2022, while an upturn of global carbon emission (5 Tg C year−1, 0.3% year−1) occurs in the recent decadal period (2008–2022) due to intensified boreal forest fires. The burned area decouples from carbon emission in terms of the changing tendency, as exhibited by the decreasing global burned area after 2008. Regionally, the fire carbon emission enhancement over the past 15 years (2008–2022) mainly comes from the boreal forests in northwestern North America, northeastern Siberia, and parts of the savanna area, all of which coincide with local climate change toward higher fire proneness. This study reveals a climate‐driven aggravation of the BB carbon emission, especially in high‐latitude boreal forests, and calls for attention to its potential impacts and effective fire management strategies.

Rapid Decline in Carbon Monoxide Emissions and Export from East Asia Between Years 2005 and 2016

Abstract:Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT) satellite and ground-based carbon monoxide (CO) measurements both suggest a widespread downward trend in CO concentrations over East Asia during the period 2005-2016. This negative trend is inconsistent with global bottom-up inventories of CO emissions, which show a small increase or stable emissions in this region. We try to reconcile the observed CO trend with emission inventories using an atmospheric inversion of the MOPITT CO data that estimates emissions from primary sources, secondary production, and chemical sinks of CO. The atmospheric inversion indicates a similar to -2% yr(-1) decrease in emissions from primary sources in East Asia from 2005-2016. The decreasing emissions are mainly caused by source reductions in China. The regional MEIC inventory for China is the only bottom up estimate consistent with the inversion-diagnosed decrease of CO emissions. According to the MEIC data, decreasing CO emissions from four main sectors (iron and steel industries, residential sources, gasoline-powered vehicles, and construction materials industries) in China explain 76% of the inversion-based trend of East Asian CO emissions. This result suggests that global inventories underestimate the recent decrease of CO emission factors in China which occurred despite increasing consumption of carbon-based fuels, and is driven by rapid technological changes with improved combustion efficiency and emission control measures.

Abstract:Fire activity has significantly changed in Europe over the last decades (1980–2020s), with the emergence of summers attaining unprecedented fire prone weather conditions. Here we report a significant shift in the non-stationary relationship linking fire weather conditions and fire intensity measured in terms of CO 2 emissions released during biomass burning across a latitudinal gradient of European IPCC regions. The reported trends indicate that global warming is possibly inducing an incipient change on regional fire dynamics towards increased fire impacts in Europe, suggesting that emerging risks posed by exceptional fire-weather danger conditions may progressively exceed current wildfire suppression capabilities in the next decades and impact forest carbon sinks.

Abstract:Forest fires are emitting substantial amounts of greenhouse gases and particulate matter into the atmosphere than assumed in state climate targets. It can play an important role in combustible environments, such as shrublands, grasslands, and forests, and contribute to climate change. Thus, forest fire, and climate change is intertwined concepts. As vegetation burns, release the carbon stored within them. This is the main reason why large-scale forest fires release atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and hence, are responsible for increasing the rate of climate change to a great extent. It is extremely significant to measure the contribution of global forest fire and emissions trends of greenhouse gases. In this context, continental-scale carbon emissions assessments were primarily attempted using ground-based datasets for forest ecosystem fires. Considerable research has been published employing remote sensing data from coast to coast. While ground-based data are valuable, they have some restrictions that can be overcome by remote sensing. Ground-based fire data are primarily limited to the total burned area, with their completeness changing yearly with the location. Remote sensing can provide additional spatio-temporal fire information to improve fire emission estimates. In this paper, the factors driving forest fire, with a brief discussion on the triangular relationship between fire, land degradation, and climate change, the role of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), machine learning (ML), and a critical overview of state-of-the-art global climate change are presented.
