Abstract:This review investigates the recent developments of heterogeneous objects modeling in additive manufacturing (AM), as well as general problems and widespread solutions to the modeling methods of heterogeneous objects. Prevalent heterogeneous object representations are generally categorized based on the different expression or data structure employed therein, and the state-of-the-art of process planning procedures for AM is reviewed via different vigorous solutions for part orientation, slicing methods, and path planning strategies. Finally, some evident problems and possible future directions of investigation are discussed.

Modeling of Heterogeneous Solid Model Based on Material Feature Representation

Abstract:A material feature-based heterogeneous solid model was developed to represent the heterogeneity of biomaterials.The material feature was defined as a specified material distribution in a certain sub-region within the solid as a high level abstraction of design intent.The material features were then represented by material composition functions.The definition,formation,and domain of the material composition functions were formally presented.A heterogeneous modeling system was implemented based on the open source graphics kernel VTK(Visualization ToolKit.With this feature-based modeling,the system can conveniently determine material distributions within solids by design rules and functional requirements.

Abstract:In this perspective, we: (a) characterize the multiscale nature of the mechanical (plasticity, fracture, twinning, and phase transformations) and thermal behavior, as well as the mass transport behavior in a variety of materials with microstructure complexities; (b) examine the applicability of several representative experimental/computational techniques/approaches in identifying the mechanisms underlying the interface-dictated mechanical, thermal, and mass transport; (c) highlight the need for the development of multiscale methods that can address atomistic and continuum descriptions of materials within one framework, together with our preliminary attempts in this regard. This perspective, together with the relevant papers collected in this focus issue, will inspire researchers to further develop advanced theories, algorithms, and software implementation for bottom-up predictive simulation of the deformation, thermal, and diffusion behavior of advanced materials. Such methods can support the design and development of materials with desired combinations of properties, for example high strength/ductility/toughness, low/high thermal/ionic conductivity, corrosion-/irradiation-resistance.

Abstract:The understanding of structural responses at different sizes under various temperatures and loading rates is essential to evaluating the integrity and safety of MEMS/NEMS devices in an extreme environment. Based on the experimental and computational capabilities available, an effort has been made recently to formulate a hyper-surface in spatial, temporal and thermal domains to model combined rate, size and thermal effects on single crystal strength. It appears from the preliminary results that the proposed procedure might provide an effective means to bridge different spatial and temporal scales in a unified multiscale modelling framework at different temperatures. To further improve the proposed procedure, a mathematical analysis on the hyper-surface formulation, and the progress in investigating the effects of loading path and crystal orientation on the hyper-surface are presented, and future research tasks are discussed in this paper.

Abstract:In the analysis of composite materials with heterogeneous microstructures, full resolution of the heterogeneities using classical numerical approaches can be computationally prohibitive. This paper presents a micromechanics-enhanced finite element formulation that accurately captures the mechanical behaviour of heterogeneous materials in a computationally efficient manner. The strategy exploits analytical solutions derived by Eshelby for ellipsoidal inclusions in order to determine the mechanical perturbation fields as a result of the underlying heterogeneities. Approximation functions for these perturbation fields are then incorporated into a finite element formulation to augment those of the macroscopic fields. A significant feature of this approach is that the finite element mesh does not explicitly resolve the heterogeneities and that no additional degrees of freedom are introduced. In this paper, Hybrid-Trefftz stress finite elements are utilised and performance of the proposed formulation is demonstrated with numerical examples. The method is restricted here to elastic particulate composites with ellipsoidal inclusions but it has been designed to be extensible to a wider class of materials comprising arbitrary shaped inclusions.

Integrating Materials and Manufacturing Innovation

Abstract:Abstract Heterogeneous materials have been widely used in many engineering applications. Achieving optimal material performance requires a quantitative knowledge of the complex material microstructure and structural evolution under external stimuli. Here, we present a framework to model material microstructure via statistical morphological descriptors, i.e., certain lower-order correlation functions associated with the material’s phases. This allows one to reduce the large data sets for a complete specification of all of the local states in a microstructure to a handful of simple scalar functions that statistically capture the salient structural features of the material. Stochastic reconstruction techniques can then be employed to investigate the information content of the correlation functions, suggest superior and sensitive structural descriptors as well as generate realistic virtual 3D microstructures from the given limited structural information. The framework is employed to successfully model a variety of materials systems including an anisotropic aluminium alloy, a polycrystalline tin solder, the structural evolution in a binary lead-tin alloy when aged, and a model structure of hard-sphere packing. Our framework also has ramifications in the development of integrated computational material design schemes and 4D materials modeling techniques.

Abstract:The Micro- and Nano-mechanics Working Group of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics organized a forum to discuss the perspectives, trends, and directions in mechanics of heterogeneous materials in January 2010. The international journal, Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica, is devoted to all fields of solid mechanics and relevant disciplines in science, technology, and engineering, with a balanced coverage on analytical, experimental, numerical and applied investigations. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica, its editor-in-chief, Professor Q.S. Zheng invited some of the forum participants to review the state-of-the-art of mechanics of heterogeneous solids, with a particular emphasis on the recent research development results of Chinese scientists. Their reviews are organized into five research areas as reported in different sections of this paper. §I firstly brings in focus on micro- and nano-mechanics, with regards to several selective topics, including multiscale coupled models and computational methods, nanocrystal superlattices, surface effects, micromechanical damage mechanics, and microstructural evolution of metals and shape memory alloys. §II shows discussions on multifield coupled mechanical phenomena, e.g., multi-fields actuations of liquid crystal polymer networks, mechanical behavior of materials under radiations, and micromechanics of heterogeneous materials. In § III, we mainly address the multiscale mechanics of biological nanocomposites, biological adhesive surface mechanics, wetting and dewetting phenomena on microstructured solid surfaces. The phononic crystals and manipulation of elastic waves were elaborated in § IV. Finally, we conclude with a series of perspectives on solid mechanics. This review will set a primary goal of future science research and engineering application on solid mechanics with the effort of social and economic development.
Approach of Heterogeneous Bio-Modeling Based on Material Features

Abstract:To capture the heterogeneity of biomaterials, a material feature based approach of heterogeneous bio-modelling is presented in this paper. The concept of material feature is defined as the specified material distribution of a certain sub-region within a solid, which is a high level abstraction of design intent. These material features are finally laid down on the function representations, which consist of material composition functions. The definition, formation and domain of material composition functions are formally presented. In order to facilitate the evaluation of material distribution, these functions are classified into component function and constraint function. Meanwhile, to capture the distinct material composition partition existing in medical objects, the material interface is introduced. The problem of overlapping and/or ambiguous of the feature domains is addressed. Finally, the feature tree for storing, evaluating of material features and tracing of design intents is proposed and the feature solving algorithm is presented. A prototype heterogeneous bio-modeling system is implemented based on open source graphics kernel VTK, with the help of translation layer to improve the system's efficiency and compatibility.
Modeling Heterogeneous Materials via Two-Point Correlation Functions: I. Basic Principles

Abstract:Heterogeneous materials abound in nature and man-made situations. Examples include porous media, biological materials, and composite materials. Diverse and interesting properties exhibited by these materials result from their complex microstructures, which also make it difficult to model the materials. In this first part of a series of two papers, we collect the known necessary conditions on the standard two-point correlation function S2(r) and formulate a new conjecture. In particular, we argue that given a complete two-point correlation function space, S2(r) of any statistically homogeneous material can be expressed through a map on a selected set of bases of the function space. We provide new examples of realizable two-point correlation functions and suggest a set of analytical basis functions. Moreover, we devise an efficient and isotropy- preserving construction algorithm, namely, the Lattice-Point algorithm to generate realizations of materials from their two- point correlation functions based on the Yeong-Torquato technique. Subsequent analysis can be performed on the generated images to obtain desired macroscopic properties. These developments are integrated here into a general scheme that enables one to model and categorize heterogeneous materials via two-point correlation functions.

Abstract:Microstructure features directly reflect mechanical responses during material deformation and can influence the surface integrity of machined components, which is of great interest to both academic communities and industries. This paper summarizes the state of the art in modeling approaches for the effect of the microstructures and its evolution during metal-cutting processes. The aim of this paper is to analyze the advantages and drawbacks of current methods to improve modeling work and direct future orientations. First, dominant numerical modeling approaches for metal-cutting processes are reviewed. The finite element method (FEM) and mesh-free methods widely applied in professional research are discussed. Following this, approaches to modeling the effect of microstructures and their evolution are reviewed for two major categories—homogeneous field distribution and heterogeneous characteristics. Both the advantages and disadvantages of these two categories are analyzed and discussed in detail. Experimental techniques based on advanced characterization approaches to the validation of pertinent models are also discussed. Finally, a brief summary is presented and an outlook for future work is delineated.

Abstract:Multiscale simulation and homogenization of materials have become the major computational technology as well as engineering tools in material modeling and material design. However, the concurrent multiscale simulations require extensive computational resources, in which the CPU time increases exponentially as the spatial and temporal scale increase. In fact, with only a few exceptions, both hierarchical and concurrent multiscale modeling techniques have not been adopted in the industrial sector, primarily because of their computational cost. Recently, the rapid developments in artificial intelligence technology as well as the fast growth in computational resources and data have stimulated a widespread adoption of machine learning-based methodologies to enhance the computational efficiency and accuracy in multiscale simulations and their applications. Even though there is a great expectation of a revolution propelled by the artificial intelligence and machine learning technology in computational materials and computational mechanics, the machine learning-based multiscale modeling and simulation is still at its infant stage. In this paper, we aim at a state-of-the-art review on the machine learning-based multiscale modeling and simulation of materials, and its applications in composite homogenization, defect mechanics modeling, and material design, to provide an overview as well as perspectives on these innovative techniques, which may soon replace the conventional multiscale modeling methods.

Abstract:A continuing challenge in computational materials design is developing a model to link the microstructure of a material to its material properties in both an accurate and computationally efficient manner. In this paper, such a model is developed which uses image-based data from characterization studies combined with a newly developed self-consistent volume-integral micromechanics model (SVIM) for linear elastic material. It is observed that SVIM is able to capture the effective stress/strain distribution inside the inclusion, as well as effects of volume fraction and nearest inclusion distance on the effective properties of heterogeneous material. More importantly, SVIM can be applied to inclusions with arbitrary shape through discretizing the inclusion domain. For both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional problems with circular and spherical inhomogeneities, SVIM’s capability of predicting effective elastic properties is validated against experiments and direct numerical simulations using the finite element method. Finally, the effect of inclusion shape is predicted by SVIM.

Meso-scale modeling of concrete:effects of heterogeneity

Abstract:With the continuum mechanics and the improved random aggregate producing approach,a meso-mechanics model of concrete is presented based on the nonlinear damage constitutive relationship for describing the behavior of multi-phase components of concrete,i.e.aggregate,mortar and interface;Implicit and explicit methods are compared in solving the meso-mechanics concrete with a conclusion that the explicit scheme is far more efficient in terms of CPU and storage when the degrees of freedom of the meso-system become large.By introducing the Weibull probabilistic distribution of heterogeneities for mechanical characteristics of concrete components,the numerical results show that influences of heterogeneity of the components on the concrete strength and deviation are significant.

Abstract:Designing materials for targeted performance requirements as required in Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) demands a combined strategy of bottom–up and top–down modeling and simulation which treats various levels of hierarchical material structure as a mathematical representation, with infusion of systems engineering and informatics to deal with differing model degrees of freedom and uncertainty. Moreover, with time, the classical materials selection approach is becoming generalized to address concurrent design of microstructure or mesostructure to satisfy product-level performance requirements. Computational materials science and multiscale mechanics models play key roles in evaluating performance metrics necessary to support materials design. The interplay of systems-based design of materials with multiscale modeling methodologies is at the core of materials design. In high performance alloys and composite materials, maximum performance is often achieved within a relatively narrow window of process path and resulting microstructures.Much of the attention to ICME in the materials community has focused on the role of generating and representing data, including methods for characterization and digital representation of microstructure, as well as databases and model integration. On the other hand, the computational mechanics of materials and multidisciplinary design optimization communities are grappling with many fundamental issues related to stochasticity of processes and uncertainty of data, models, and multiscale modeling chains in decision-based design. This paper explores computational and information aspects of design of materials with hierarchical microstructures and identifies key underdeveloped elements essential to supporting ICME. One of the messages of this overview paper is that ICME is not simply an assemblage of existing tools, for such tools do not have natural interfaces to material structure nor are they framed in a way that quantifies sources of uncertainty and manages uncertainty in representing physical phenomena to support decision-based design.

Abstract:This paper presents a microstructure-guided modeling approach to predict the effective elastic response of heterogeneous materials, and demonstrates its application toward two highly heterogeneous, unconventional structural binders, i.e., iron carbonate and fly ash geopolymer. Microstructural information from synchrotron X-ray tomography (XRT) and intrinsic elastic properties of component solid phases from statistical nanoindentation are used as the primary inputs. The virtual periodic 3D microstructure reconstructed using XRT, along with periodic boundary conditions is used as a basis for strain-controlled numerical simulation scheme in the linear elastic range to predict the elastic modulus as well as the stresses in the microstructural phases. The elastic modulus of the composite material predicted from the microstructure-based constitutive modeling approach correlates very well with experimental measurements for both the materials considered. This technique efficiently links the microstructure to mechanical properties of interest and helps develop material design guidelines for novel heterogeneous composites.

Numerical Simulation of Macrosegregation with Multiphase Model and Non‐Orthogonal Grids

Abstract:Macrosegregation, i.e., the inhomogeneous distribution of solute concentration, exists in various alloys solidification process and it deteriorates the materials mechanical performance. Generally, orthogonal grids were used to numerically simulate the fluid flow and macrosegregation of casting. However, the non-orthogonal grids are flexible in treatment of the boundary fitness for the irregular geometry. In this research, multiphase macrosegregation model is developed by coupling nucleation and growth of grains on microscopic level with macroscopic transportation based on non-orthogonal grids. Firstly, driven skewed cavity flow problem is applied as a benchmark to test the performance on non-orthogonal grids. Then, a two-phase modeling of macrosegregation for Pb-48wt.% Sn in a two-dimensional rectangle cavity, H-H benchmark, is studied. The numerical results with comparison of practical measurement exhibit the great potential of non-orthogonal grids in modeling of macrosegregation in complex geometry such as in steel ingots.

Abstract:The heterogeneous multiscale method, is presented as a general methodology for an efficient numerical computation of problems with multiple scales. The method relies on an efficient coupling between the macroscopic and microscopic models. In case the macroscopic model is not explicitly available or is invalid in part of the domain, the microscopic model is used to supply the necessary data for the macroscopic model. Scale separation is exploited so that coarse-grained variables can be evolved on macroscopic spatial/temporal scales using data that are predicted based on the simulation of the microscopic process on microscale spatial/temporal domains. Applications to homogenization, dislocation dynamics and crack propagation are discussed.
The Heterogeneous Multiscale Method and the “ Equation-free ” Approach to Multiscale Modeling

Abstract:In many problems of multiscale modeling, we are interested in capturing the macroscale behavior of the system with the help of some accurate microscale models, bypassing the need of using empirical macroscale models. This paper gives an overview of the recent efforts on establishing general strategies for designing such algorithms. After reviewing some important classical examples, the Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics, the quasicontinuum method for modeling the deformation of solids and the kinetic schemes for gas dynamics, we discuss three attempts that have been made for designing general strategies: Brandt’s renormalization multi-grid method (RMG), the heterogeneous multiscale method (HMM) and the “equation-free” approach. We will discuss the relative merits and difficulties with each strategy and we will make an attempt to clarify their similarities and differences. We end with some perspectives about this kind of approach.
