Abstract:The strong thermal effect is an important factor that hinders the application of nanosecond laser in the fabrication of uniform laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS), though it offers the advantages of low cost and high efficiency. In this study, we show that regular microstructures consisting of LIPSS ribbons can be generated on chromium (Cr) metal via the two-beam interference scanning (TBIS) of a 1064-nm nanosecond laser, whereas LIPSS induced by the single-beam scanning (SBS) of the same laser has poor regularity due to excessive heat accumulation. Compared with SBS, TBIS is beneficial to minimize the undesirable thermal effects in the processing via the periodic intensity modulation, thus to generate homogenous LIPSS on Cr—we propose that the periodic intensity modulation derived from two-beam interference would lead to higher peak intensity that would form desired structures with a smaller effective pulse number, localize the heat-affected zones to benefit the positive grating-coupling feedback, and constrain the randomness of material redeposition during the TBIS processing. The results demonstrate that TBIS of nanosecond laser may provide an alternative way to efficiently fabricate uniform structures on various materials.
