Abstract:Fermi-surface fluctuations and lattice instabilities in the two-dimensional metallic kagome superconductor CsV_{3}Sb_{5} are elucidated via polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy. The presence of a weak electronic continuum in high-quality samples marks the crossover into the charge-density-wave (CDW) ordered phase, while impurity-rich samples promote strong defect-induced electronic scattering processes that affect the coherence of the CDW phase. CDW-induced phonon anomalies appear below T_{CDW}, with emergent C2 symmetry for one of the CDW amplitude modes, alluding to nematicity. In conjunction with symmetry-breaking lattice distortions, a kinklike hardening of the A_{1g} phonon energy at T_{CDW} signifies a concerted interplay of electronic correlations and electron-phonon coupling in the exotic CDW order.

Abstract:The kagome lattice provides a fascinating playground to study geometrical frustration, topology and strong correlations. The newly-discovered kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (where A can refer to K, Rb, or Cs) exhibit phenomena including topological band structure, symmetry-breaking charge-density waves and superconductivity. Nevertheless, the nature of the symmetry breaking in the charge-density wave phase is not yet clear, despite the fact that it is crucial in order to understand whether the superconductivity is unconventional. In this work, we perform scanning birefringence microscopy on all three members of this family and find that six-fold rotation symmetry is broken at the onset of the charge-density wave transition in all these compounds. We show that the three nematic domains are oriented at 120$^\circ$ to each other and propose that staggered charge-density wave orders with a relative $\pi$ phase shift between layers is a possibility that can explain these observations. We also perform magneto-optical Kerr effect and circular dichroism measurements. The onset of both signals is at the transition temperature, indicating broken time-reversal symmetry and the existence of the long-sought loop currents in that phase.

Abstract:Novel states of matter arise in quantum materials due to strong interactions among electrons. A nematic phase breaks the point group symmetry of the crystal lattice and is known to emerge in correlated materials. Here we report the observation of an intra-unit-cell nematic order and signatures of Pomeranchuk instability in the Kagome metal ScV6Sn6. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we reveal a stripe-like nematic order breaking the crystal rotational symmetry within the Kagome lattice itself. Moreover, we identify a set of van Hove singularities adhering to the Kagome layer electrons, which appear along one direction of the Brillouin zone while being annihilated along other high-symmetry directions, revealing a rotational symmetry breaking. Via detailed spectroscopic maps, we further observe an elliptical deformation of Fermi surface, which provides direct evidence for an electronically mediated nematic order. Our work not only bridges the gap between electronic nematicity and Kagome physics, but also sheds light on the potential mechanism for realizing symmetry-broken phases in correlated electron systems.

Abstract:Recent experiments have identified fascinating electronic orders in kagome materials, including intriguing superconductivity, charge density wave (CDW) and nematicity. In particular, some experimental evidence for AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A = K,Rb,Cs) and related kagome metals hints at the formation of orbital currents in the charge density wave ordered regime, providing a mechanism for spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking in the absence of local moments. In this work, we comprehensively explore the competitive charge instabilities of the spinless kagome lattice with inter-site Coulomb interactions at the pure-sublattice van Hove filling. From the analysis of the charge susceptibility, we find that, at the nesting vectors, while the onsite charge order is dramatically suppressed, the bond charge orders are substantially enhanced owing to the sublattice texture on the hexagonal Fermi surface. Furthermore, we demonstrate that nearest-neighbor and next nearest-neighbor bonds are characterized by significant intrinsic real and imaginary bond fluctuations, respectively. The 2$\times$2 loop current order is thus favored by the next nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion. Interestingly, increasing interactions further leads to a nematic state with intra-cell sublattice density modulation that breaks the $C_6$ rotational symmetry. We further explore superconducting orders descending from onsite and bond charge fluctuations, and discuss our model's implications on the experimental status quo.

Abstract:Spontaneously broken symmetries are at the heart of many phenomena of quantum matter and physics more generally. However, determining the exact symmetries that are broken can be challenging due to imperfections such as strain, in particular when multiple electronic orders are competing. This is exemplified by charge order in some kagome systems, where evidence of nematicity and flux order from orbital currents remains inconclusive due to contradictory measurements. Here we clarify this controversy by fabricating highly symmetric samples of a member of this family, CsV 3 Sb 5 , and measuring their transport properties. We find that a measurable anisotropy is absent at any temperature in the unperturbed material. However, a pronounced in-plane transport anisotropy appears when either weak magnetic fields or strains are present. A symmetry analysis indicates that a perpendicular magnetic field can indeed lead to in-plane anisotropy by inducing a flux order coexisting with more conventional bond order. Our results provide a unifying picture for the controversial charge order in kagome metals and highlight the need for materials control at the microscopic scale in the identification of broken symmetries.

Abstract:Recently discovered superconductors AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs)1,2 provide a fresh opportunity to study correlation-driven electronic phenomena on a kagome lattice. The observation of an unusual charge density wave (CDW) in the normal state of all the members of the AV3Sb5 family2–10 has prompted a large effort to identify any ‘hidden’ broken symmetries associated with it. We use spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunnelling microscopy to reveal pronounced intensity anisotropy between the different directions of hexagonal CDW in KV3Sb5. In particular, we find that one of the CDW directions is distinctly different compared with the other two. This observation points to an intrinsic rotation-symmetry-broken electronic ground state where the symmetry is reduced from sixfold to twofold. Furthermore, in contrast to previous reports3, we find that the CDW phase is insensitive to the magnetic-field direction, regardless of the presence or absence of atomic defects. Our experiments, combined with earlier observations of stripe charge ordering in CsV3Sb5, establish correlation-driven rotation symmetry breaking as a unifying feature of AV3Sb5 kagome superconductors.

Abstract:Recent experiments on kagome metals AV3Sb5 ( A=Cs,Rb,K ) indicated spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking in the charge density wave state in the absence of static magnetization. The loop current order (LCO) is proposed as its cause, but a microscopic model explaining the emergence of LCO through electronic correlations has not been firmly established. We show that the coupling between van Hove singularities with distinct mirror symmetries is a key ingredient to generate LCO ground state. By constructing an effective model, we find that when multiple van Hove singularities with opposite mirror eigenvalues are close in energy, the nearest-neighbor electron repulsion favors a ground state with coexisting LCO and charge bond order. It is then demonstrated that this mechanism applies to the kagome metals AV3Sb5 . Electron correlations and $T$-breaking density wave order in a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ kagome metal

Abstract:There have been extensive recent developments on kagome metals, such as T$_m$X$_n$ (T= Fe, Co and X= Sn, Ge) and $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A=$ Cs, K, Rb). An emerging issue is the nature of correlated phases when topologically \textit{non-trivial} bands cross the Fermi level. Here, we consider an extended Hubbard model on the kagome lattice in the presence of spin-orbit couplings, involving a Kramer's pair of bands that have opposite Chern numbers and are isolated in the band structure. We construct an effective model in a time-reversal (T) symmetric lattice description. We determine the correlated phases of this model and identify a density-wave order in the phase diagram. We show that this order is T-breaking, which originates from the Wannier orbitals lacking a common Wannier center -- a fingerprint of the underlying $Z_2$ topology. Implications of our results for the correlation physics of the kagome metals are discussed.

Abstract:Layered crystalline materials that consist of transition metal atoms on a kagome network have emerged as a versatile platform to study unusual electronic phenomena. For example, in the vanadium-based kagome superconductors AV3Sb5 (where A can stand for K, Cs, or Rb) there is a parent charge density wave phase that appears to simultaneously break both the translational and the rotational symmetry of the lattice. Here, we show a contrasting situation where electronic nematic order - the breaking of rotational symmetry without the breaking of translational symmetry - can occur without a corresponding charge density wave. We use spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy to study the kagome metal CsTi3Bi5 that is isostructural to AV3Sb5 but with a titanium atom kagome network. CsTi3Bi5 does not exhibit any detectable charge density wave state, but comparison to density functional theory calculations reveals substantial electronic correlation effects at low energies. Comparing the amplitudes of scattering wave vectors along different directions, we discover an electronic anisotropy that breaks the six-fold symmetry of the lattice, arising from both in-plane and out-of-plane titanium-derived d orbitals. Our work uncovers the role of electronic orbitals in CsTi3Bi5, suggestive of a hexagonal analogue of the nematic bond order in Fe-based superconductors.

Violation of Emergent Rotational Symmetry in the Hexagonal Kagome Superconductor CsV3Sb5

Abstract:Superconductivity is caused by electron pairs that are canonically isotropic, whereas some exotic superconductors are known to exhibit non-trivial anisotropy stemming from unconventional pairings. However, superconductors with hexagonal symmetry, the highest rotational symmetry allowed in crystals, exceptionally have strong constraint that is called emergent rotational symmetry (ERS): anisotropic properties should be very weak especially near the critical temperature Tc even for unconventional pairings such as d-wave states. Here, we investigate superconducting anisotropy of the recently-found hexagonal Kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5, which is known to exhibit various intriguing phenomena originating from its undistorted Kagome lattice formed by vanadium atoms. Based on calorimetry performed under accurate two-axis field-direction control, we discover a combination of six- and two-fold anisotropies in the in-plane upper critical field. Both anisotropies, robust up to very close to Tc, are beyond predictions of standard theories. We infer that this clear ERS violation with nematicity is best explained by multi-component nematic superconducting order parameter in CsV3Sb5 intertwined with symmetry breakings caused by the underlying charge-density-wave order.

Abstract:In the recently discovered kagome metal CsV 3 Sb 5 , an intriguing proposal invoking a doped Chern insulator state suggests the presence of small Chern Fermi pockets hosting spontaneous orbital-currents and large orbital magnetic moments. While the net thermodynamic magnetization is nearly insensitive to these moments, due to their antiferromagnetic alignment, their presence can be revealed by the Zeeman effect, which shifts electron energies in magnetic fields with a proportionality given by the effective g −factor. Here, we determine the g -factor using the spin-zero effect in magnetic quantum oscillations. A large g -factor enhancement is visible only in magnetic breakdown orbits between conventional and concentrated Berry curvature Fermi pockets that host large orbital moments. Such Berry-curvature-generated large orbital moments are almost always concealed by other effects. In this system, however, magnetic breakdown orbits due to the proximity to a conventional Fermi-surface section allow them to be visibly manifested in magnetic quantum oscillations. Our results provide a remarkable example of the interplay between electronic correlations and more conventional electronic bands in quantum materials.

Abstract:Using ultra‐high‐resolution magnetic force microscopy, a novel type of periodic and regular hexagonal spin texture is revealed in the frustrated kagome Fe3Sn2 magnet. The results suggest that the kagome lattice can strongly modulate the magnetic order over a much larger scale and with more regular symmetries than previously thought. The electronic orders in kagome materials have emerged as a fertile platform for studying exotic quantum states, and their intertwining with the unique kagome lattice geometry remains elusive. While various unconventional charge orders with broken symmetry is observed, the influence of kagome symmetry on magnetic order has so far not been directly observed. Here, using a high‐resolution magnetic force microscopy, it is, for the first time, observed a new lattice form of noncollinear spin textures in the kagome ferromagnet in zero magnetic field. Under the influence of the sixfold rotational symmetry of the kagome lattice, the spin textures are hexagonal in shape and can further form a honeycomb lattice structure. Subsequent thermal cycling measurements reveal that these spin textures transform into a non‐uniform in‐plane ferromagnetic ground state at low temperatures and can fully rebuild at elevated temperatures, showing a strong second‐order phase transition feature. Moreover, some out‐of‐plane magnetic moments persist at low temperatures, supporting the Kane–Mele scenario in explaining the emergence of the Dirac gap. The observations establish that the electronic properties, including both charge and spin orders, are strongly coupled with the kagome lattices.

Here we demonstrate that, in a nonlinear grating with memory, diffracted waves can spontaneously acquire momentum parallel to the lattice vector in quantities unconstrained by the grating period. In this breakdown of Bloch's theorem, which we also evidence in solutions to nonlinear Maxwell's equations, wave amplitudes no longer respect the discrete translation symmetry of the grating. Our findings reveal a rich phenomenology for waves in nonlinear periodic systems, and point to numerous opportunities for nonlinear lattices with broken symmetry in the context of imaging, sensing, and information processing in general.

Abstract:Exotic quantum order in kagome metals, i.e., quantum materials with a Fermi liquid parent state of electrons on a kagome lattice, has appeared as a vibrant emerging field of condensed matter physics. Already in a small kagome material subclass such as vanadium-based compounds $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A=$ K, Rb, Cs), the first wave of experimental exploration has brought about manifold evidence for hitherto largely elusive phenomena such as high-temperature charge ordering with orbital currents, nematic order, cascades of charge ordering transitions with hierarchies of ordering vectors, and unconventional superconductivity. We argue that kagome metals promise to be a prototypical ground for the non-equilibrium analysis of quantum order through time-dependent parameter control and manipulation. In particular, we propose to investigate the nematic character of kagome quantum order through light and strain pulses, as well as the nature of time-reversal symmetry breaking and chirality through properly polarized laser pulses.

Abstract:This research article thoroughly explores the electromagnetic behavior in silver metal at optical regime. Along the way, it uncovers some intriguing wave behaviors in terms of novel phenomenon – counterposition, negative phase velocity (NPV), orthogonal phase velocity (OPV) and/or negative refraction (NR), versus wavelength are investigated which is not previously deeply discussed in a silver configuration. Additionally, Minkowski momentum densities, revealing complex wave dynamics versus optical wavelength are studied first time for silver metal. Moreover, the influence on wave in silver metal due to L-nihility is notified fruitfully. These findings provide deeper insights platform for potential applications in diverse scientific and technological domains in condense matter physics, engineering and optics.
