Abstract:It has been widely accepted that planar boron structures, composed of triangular and hexagonal motifs are the most stable two-dimensional (2D) phases and likely precursors for boron nanostructures. Here we predict, based on an ab initio evolutionary structure search, a novel 2D boron structure with nonzero thickness, which is considerably, by $50\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{meV}/\mathrm{atom}$, lower in energy than the recently proposed $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-sheet structure and its analogues. In particular, this phase is identified for the first time to have a distorted Dirac cone, after graphene and silicene the third elemental material with massless Dirac fermions. The buckling and coupling between the two sublattices not only enhance the energetic stability, but also are the key factors for the emergence of the distorted Dirac cone.

Abstract:A new two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic semiconducting boron structure, named as M-B28, is predicted using ab initio evolutionary structure searching. First-principles calculations show that M-B28 has a lower energy than other 2D magnetic boron structures and is dynamically stable. The unpaired electrons from the caps of B26 clusters lead to magnetism in M-B28, while making its highest valence band flat and isolated. The Néel temperature and mechanical properties of M-B28 are evaluated with the Ising model and strain-stress method, respectively, revealing a transition temperature of 32 K and the ideal strengths of 43.7 N/m along x direction and 38.5 N/m along y direction.

Abstract:The successful realization of free-standing graphene and the various applications of its exotic properties have spurred tremendous research interest for two-dimensional (2D) layered materials. Besides graphene, many other 2D materials have been successfully produced by experiment, such as silicene, monolayer MoS2, few-layer black phosphorus and so on. As a neighbor of carbon in the periodic table, element boron is interesting and many researchers have contributed their efforts to realize boron related 2D structures. These structures may be significant both in fundamental science and future technical applications in nanoelectronics and nanodevices. In this review, we summarize the recent developments of 2D boron based materials. The theoretical design, possible experimental realization strategies and their potential technical applications are presented and discussed. Also, the current challenges and prospects of this area are discussed.
Bp5 Monolayer With Multiferroicity And Negative Poisson'S Ratio: A Prediction By Global Optimization Method

Abstract:Based on global optimization Cuttlefish algorithm, we predict a stable two-dimensional (2D) phase of boron phosphide with 1:5 stoichiometry, i.e. boron pentaphosphide (BP5) monolayer, which has a lower formation energy than that of the commonly believed graphitic phase (g-BP). BP5 monolayer is a multiferroic material with coupled ferroelasticity and ferroelectricity. The predicted reversible strain is up to 41.41%, which is the largest one among all reported ferroelastic materials. Due to the non-centrosymmetric structure and electronegativity differences between boron and phosphorus atoms, an in-plane spontaneous polarization of 1.63 x 10(-10) C m(-1) occurs in BP5. Moreover, the recently hunted negative Poisson's ratio property, is also observed in BP5. As an indirect semiconductor with a band gap of 1.34 eV, BP5 displays outstanding optical and electronic properties, for instance strongly anisotropic visible-light absorption and high carrier mobility. Finally, we demonstrate that AlN (0 1 0) surface could be a suitable substrate for epitaxy growth of BP5 monolayer. Due to the rich and extraordinary properties of BP5, it's considered to be a potential nanomaterial for designing electromechanical or optoelectronic devices, such as nonvolatile memory with conveniently readable/writeable capability.

Abstract:Due to ultralow defect formation energy, borophene differs significantly from other 2D (two-dimensional) materials in that it is difficult to distinguish between its crystal and boron (B) vacancy defect. In contrast to other 2D materials like graphene, borophene does not form layers when it is in its bulk state. In addition, borophene NM's atomic structure is different from graphene's in that it consists of connected triangles rather than hexagons. This atomic configuration has gaps where atoms are missing, resulting in a flaw called a "hollow hexagon" (HH). In borophene phases, these HHs can be found in a variety of ratios. The phase intermixing of borophene is a brand-new example of an 'ordered' defect discovered in 2D materials. The majority of 2D materials have flaws or disruptions to the atom arrangement at the boundaries between various domains or phases. Defects play a major influence in determining the properties of materials in a 2D system, because all atoms are virtually on the surface. For instance, the line defects along phase boundaries in borophene have no effect on the material's electrical characteristics at ambient temperature, in contrast to insulating flaws in metallic graphene. The atoms at the borders of borophene easily fit along line faults and adopt the configuration of their neighbors, causing no disruption. Additionally, the line flaws do not disrupt the seamless structure of borophene and maintain its stability and metallic properties. Experimentally, all four borophene phases have been synthesized, and they are all metallic. A list of borophene NM's special characteristics, including its negative Poisson's ratio and extremely anisotropic Young's modulus, is discussed. Here we also emphasized on B's conductive and superconductive qualities. An overview of borophene NM's uses in the energy sectors, including metal ion batteries, and supercapacitors (SCs), is covered in great length at the very end.

Two-Dimensional Boron Oxides with Dirac Loop and Strongly anisotropic Carrier Mobility

Abstract:Recently, two-dimensional boron sheets have attracted a lot of attentions owing to their structural polymorphs and outstanding properties. And, due to chemical complexity and electron deficiency of B atoms, the 2D boron sheets are easy affected by the environment. So, exploring novel 2D boron oxides gets highly needed. In this study, we theoretically explored 2D boron oxides structures and their basic properties. We found 2D boron oxides are metals or semimetals, when oxygen concentration is low. More interesting, the B6O1 exhibits Dirac Loop near the Fermi level and the maximum Fermi velocity is estimated as high as 0.61*10E6 m/s, which much close to that in graphene. In addition, when the oxygen concentration is one forth, the most stable B4O1 get a semiconductor with a direct band gap of 1.24 eV and a strong anisotropic carrier mobility. Such huge differences of carrier mobility between two directions have not been reported in other 2D materials. Besides, when oxygen concentra-tion is higher than one forth, the 2D boron sheets will get unstable based our results. We also proposed a method how to synthesize these systems. Our work provide a basic knowledge of 2D boron oxides and may lead to novel 2D boron oxides discovered. The unique electronic properties of the B6O1 and B4O1 render them promising 2D materials for applications in high-performance nanodevices.
From Two- to Three-Dimensional van der Waals Layered Structures of Boron Crystals: An Ab Initio Study

Abstract:A remarkable recent advancement has been the successful synthesis of two-dimensional boron monolayers on metal substrates. However, although up to 16 possible bulk allotropes of boron have been reported, none of them possess van der Waals (vdW) layered structures. In this work, starting from the experimentally synthesized monolayer boron sheet (β12 borophene), we explored the possibility for forming vdW layered bulk boron. We found that two β12 borophene sheets cannot form a stable vdW bilayer structure, as covalent-like B–B bonds are formed between them because of the peculiar bonding. Interestingly, when the covalently bonded bilayer borophene sheets are stacked on top of each other, three-dimensional (3D) layered structures are constructed via vdW interlayer interactions, rather than covalent. The 3D vdW layered structures were found to be dynamically stable. The interlayer binding energy is about 20 meV/Å2, which is close to the weakly bound graphene layers in graphite (∼16 meV/Å2). Furthermore, the density functional theory predicted electronic band structure testifies that these vdW bulk boron crystals can behave as good conductors. The insights obtained from this work suggest an opportunity to discover new vdW layered structures of bulk boron, which is expected to be crucial to numerous applications ranging from microelectronic devices to energy storage devices.

Abstract:Boron, the fifth element in the period table, exhibits diverse bonding patterns and interesting structures due to its electron deficiency.Unlike its neighbor carbon, closed-packed boron sheet with graphene-like honeycomb lattice is unstable so that planar boron clusters usually have interior vacancies and corrugated appearance.Delocalized multicenter bonding has an important role to stabilize the 2D structures, giving rise to the concept of σ, π, …multiple aromaticity.The experimental observation of the B 36 -cluster in 2014 established the viability of boron monolayer which was named as "borophene" by Wang and Li.Recently, studies on planar CoB 18 -and RhB 18 -clusters have suggested the possibilities of metal-doped borophenes (metallo-borophenes) with potentially tunable electronic, magnetic and optical properties.In this review, we summarize recent experimental and theoretical advances in 2D pure-boron and metaldoped boron clusters, as well as their implications for borophenes and metalloborophenes as novel new boron materials.
Insight into Two-Dimensional Borophene: Five-Center Bond and Phonon-Mediated Superconductivity

Abstract:We report a previously unknown monolayer borophene allotrope and we call it super-B with a flat structure based on the ab initio calculations. It has good thermal, dynamical, and mechanical stability compared with many other typical borophenes. We find that super-B has a fascinating chemical bond environment consisting of standard sp, sp2 hybridizations, and delocalized five-center three-electron $\pi$ bond, called $\pi$(5c-3e). This particular electronic structure plays a pivotal role in stabilizing the super-B chemically. By extra doping, super-B can be transformed into a Dirac material from pristine metal. Like graphene, it can also sustain tensile strain smaller than 24%, indicating superior flexibility. Moreover, due to the small atomic mass and large density of states at the Fermi level, super-B has the highest critical temperature Tc of 25.3 K in single-element superconductors at ambient conditions. We attribute this high Tc of super-B to the giant anharmonicity of two linear acoustic phonon branches and an unusually low optic phonon mode. These predictions provide new insight into the chemical nature of low dimensional boron nanostructures and highlight the potential applications of designing flexible devices and high Tc superconductors.

Build Borophite from Borophenes: A Boron Analogue Graphite

Abstract:Unlike graphene derived from graphite, borophenes represent a distinct class of synthetic two-dimensional materials devoid of analogous bulk-layered allotropes, leading to covalent bonding within borophenes instead of van der Waals (vdW) stacking. Our investigation focuses on 665 vdW-stacking boron bilayers to uncover potential bulk-layered boron allotropes through vdW stacking. Systematic high-throughput screening and stability analysis reveal a prevailing inclination toward covalently bonded layers in the majority of boron bilayers. However, an intriguing outlier emerges in δ5 borophene, demonstrating potential as a vdW-stacking candidate. We delve into electronic and topological structural similarities between δ5 borophene and graphene, shedding light on the structural integrity and stability of vdW-stacked boron structures across bilayers, multilayers, and bulk-layered allotropes. The δ5 borophene analogues exhibit metallic properties and characteristics of phonon-mediated superconductors, boasting a critical temperature near 22 K. This study paves the way for the concept of "borophite", a long-awaited boron analogue of graphite.
Novel Boron-Doped Biphenylene Network As High-Capacity Anodes for Metal Ions Batteries: from Monolayer to Bilayer Structure

Abstract:Promising flexible electrochemical energy storage systems are presently receiving a great deal of attention. Nevertheless, it has proven difficult to advance these technologies due to the absence of appropriate battery electrodes that offer a certain electrochemical performance. One promising option for battery electrodes has been identified as two-dimensional (2D) lightweight, flexible materials with exceptional physical and chemical characteristics such as hydrophilic surfaces, high surface metal diffusivity, strong conductivity, and mechanical strengths. This study focused on biphenylene (BPN), a novel 2D nonbenzenoid carbon allotrope that was created by a bottom-up, on-surface interpolymer dehydrogenation (HF-zipping) reaction. We systematically investigated a number of influencing factors, such as the electronic, mechanical, and electrochemical properties of pristine and boron-doped biphenylene (B-BPN) nanosheets, such as binding strength, ionic diffusion barrier, equilibrium voltage, and theoretical capacity. With favorable adsorption energy (Ead) and no structural deformation, all projected B-doped BPN-adsorbed Li, K, and Ca atoms have high structural stability. We simulated the ionic diffusion barrier using a charged electrode model (taking into account possible charge-transfer polarization). We discovered that the ionic diffusion barrier has a distinct dependence on the surface atomic configuration, which is influenced by bond length, valence electron number, electrical conductivity, excellent ionic diffusion barrier, and low equilibrium voltage. Benefiting from ion diffusion barriers along furrows at 0.23/0.21/0.66 eV for Li/K/Ca, the B-BPN structure has an excellent rate capacity overall. Additionally, the theoretical capacity is relatively superior, up to 4 times higher than that of commercialized graphite (1501.7 vs 372 mAh/g in the case of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), 938.5 mAh/g in the case of potassium ion batteries (PIBs), and 1126.3 mAh/g in the case of calcium ion batteries (CIBs)), and enhances the storage capacity up to 15.2% for lithium-ion batteries. Based on the 2D BPN structure, our result offers insightful information for experimental investigations of flexible anode options.
Dirac Nodal Lines and Tilted Semi-Dirac Cones Coexisting in a Striped Boron Sheet

Abstract:The enchanting Dirac fermions in graphene stimulated us to seek for other two-dimensional (2D) Dirac materials, and boron monolayers may be a good candidate. So far, a number of monolayer boron sheets have been theoretically predicted, and three have been experimentally prepared. However, none of them possesses Dirac electrons. Herein, by means of density functional theory (DFT) computations, we identified a new boron monolayer, namely hr-sB, with two types of Dirac fermions coexisting in the sheet: one type is related to Dirac nodal lines traversing Brillouin zone (BZ) with velocities approaching 106 m/s, the other is related to tilted semi-Dirac cones with strong anisotropy. This newly predicted boron monolayer consists of hexagon and rhombus stripes. With an exceptional stability comparable to the experimentally achieved boron sheets, it is rather optimistic to grow hr-sB on some suitable substrates such as the Ag (111) surface. The unique electronic properties induced by special bond characteristics also imply that this boron monolayer may be a good superconductor.

Abstract:Inorganic boron-based nanostructures have great potential for field emission (FE), flexible displays, superconductors, and energy storage because of their high melting point, low density, extreme hardness, and good chemical stability. Until now, most researchers have been focused on one-dimensional (1D) boron-based nanostructures (rare-earth boride (REB6) nanowires, boron nanowires, and nanotubes). Currently, two-dimensional (2D) borophene attracts most of the attention, due to its unique physical and chemical properties, which make it quite different from its corresponding bulk counterpart. Here, we offer a comprehensive review on the synthesis methods and optoelectronics properties of inorganic boron-based nanostructures, which are mainly concentrated on 1D rare-earth boride nanowires, boron monoelement nanowires, and nanotubes, as well as 2D borophene and borophane. This review paper is organized as follows. In Section I, the synthesis methods of inorganic boron-based nanostructures are systematically introduced. In Section II, we classify their optical and electrical transport properties (field emission, optical absorption, and photoconductive properties). In the last section, we evaluate the optoelectronic behaviors of the known inorganic boron-based nanostructures and propose their future applications.

Prediction of Quasi-One-dimensional Superconductivity in Metastable Two-Dimensional Boron

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) boron has been predicted to exhibit various structural polymorphs and interesting physics, including superconductivity, ideal strength, negative Possion's ratio, and a higher thermal conductivity than graphene, etc. However, the difficulty in experimental synthesis of 2D boron has further reduced its exploration and applications. In this work we have used a crystal structure search method and first-principles calculations. We have proposed a scheme of "synthesize under high pressure and peel off at ambient conditions" to first predict a bulk phase of KB4, and then peel off free standing 2D boron from it. Based on electron-phonon coupling calculations, we estimated that 2D boron is an intrinsic superconductor with T-c = 17.9 K. In addition we found a strong anisotropy of the electron-phonon coupling strength in 2D boron, thus the superconductivity in 2D boron possesses a quasi-1D feature. Our proposed scheme for the synthesis of free standing 2D boron will stimulate further studies of superconductivity in low dimensional materials, both theoretically and experimentally.
Superconductivity in Two-Dimensional Boron Allotropes

Abstract:We use ab initio evolutionary algorithm and first-principles calculations to investigate structural, electronic, vibrational, and superconducting properties of two-dimensional (2D) boron allotropes. Remarkably, we show that conventional BCS superconductivity in the stable 2D boron structures is ubiquitous with the critical temperature T-c above the liquid hydrogen temperature for certain configurations. Due to the electronic states of the Fermi surface originating from both sigma and pi electrons, the superconductivity of the 2D structures arises from multiple phonon modes. Our results support that 2D boron structure may be a pure single-element material with the highest T-c on conditions without high pressure and external strain.

Abstract:Boron, a nearest-neighbor of carbon, is possibly the second element that can possess free-standing flat monolayer structures, evidenced by recent successful synthesis of single-walled and multiwalled boron nanotubes (MWBNTs). From an extensive structural search using the first-principles particle-swarm optimization (PSO) global algorithm, two boron monolayers (α(1)- and β(1)-sheet) are predicted to be the most stable α- and β-types of boron sheets, respectively. Both boron sheets possess greater cohesive energies than the state-of-the-art two-dimensional boron structures (by more than 60 meV/atom based on density functional theory calculation using PBE0 hybrid functional), that is, the α-sheet previously predicted by Tang and Ismail-Beigi and the g(1/8)- and g(2/15)-sheets (both belonging to the β-type) recently reported by Yakobson and co-workers. Moreover, the PBE0 calculation predicts that the α-sheet is a semiconductor, while the α(1)-, β(1)-, g(1/8)-, and g(2/15)-sheets are all metals. When two α(1) monolayers are stacked on top each other, the bilayer α(1)-sheet remains flat with an optimal interlayer distance of ~3.62 Å, which is close to the measured interlayer distance (~3.2 Å) in MWBNTs.
A new type of stable borophene with flat-band-induced magnetism

Abstract:Based on first-principles calculations, we propose a new type of thermally and dynamically stable magnetic borophene (B11) with a tetragonal lattice. The magnetism is found coming from spin polarization of one bonding flat band located at the Fermi level. Despite of the "anti-molecular" behavior in the monolayer, the interactions between the pz orbitals of the B atoms in the double-octahedron structural unit lead to the formation of the flat bands with localization behaviors. One tight binding model is built to comprehend the magnetic mechanism, which can guide us to tune other nonmagnetic borophene becoming magnetic. Biaxial tensile strain (>2.1%) is found triggering a phase transition from a semimetal to a semiconductor in the B11 monolayer. The mechanism is analyzed based on the orbital-resolved crystal field effect. Our work provides a new route for designing and achieving two-dimensional magnetic materials with light elements.

Abstract:The recent discovery of MBenes has generated interest in two-dimensional metal-borides, which are expected to show rich electrochemical properties. Using evolutionary search combined with ab initio calculations, we discover that the MoB x ( x = 1, 3, and 4) monolayers, two-dimensional metal-borides, are dynamically, mechanically, and thermally stable. Due to their metallic characters, we investigate the potential of application as anode materials of Li-ion batteries. The MoB and MoB 3 monolayers are found to provide excellent properties, combining high Li-specific capacities of 670 and 418 mA h g −1 with low Li diffusion barriers of 0.10 and 0.13 eV, respectively.

Abstract:Advances in the optoelectronics and information industries have allowed modern electronic devices to undergo a continuous trend toward miniaturization and integration, which poses significant challenges to today's manufacturing technologies. The rise of two-dimensional (2D) atomically crystalline materials offers new possibilities for the design and fabrication of devices at the micro- or nanoscale. Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is an important emerging candidate in the family of 2D materials; it holds many intriguing properties of far-reaching significance. Throughout the upsurge in research on 2D materials over the past few decades, 2D hBN has been a versatile platform for various applications. To offer some perspective on the promising attributes of hBN, in this Focus Review we take a snapshot of recent advances in its applications in optoelectronics and photonics, thermal management, batteries, and supercapacitors and provide an outlook on the prospects and remaining challenges for its successful implementation in next-generation energy-efficient devices.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
