Abstract:The problem of the event horizon in relativistic gravity is discussed. Singular solutions in general relativity are well known. The Schwarschild metric of a spherical mass is singular at zero ($r = 0$) and at the event horizon ($r = r_g$). Both features reflect the existence of the phenomenon of collapse in general relativity for compact masses exceeding $3M_{\odot }$. A material particle crossing the event horizon falls into a central singularity according to the classical theory of general relativity. In the quantum theory of gravity, there may be no central singularity. The physics of the event horizon is currently being refined. A promising technique is the study of gravitational waves (GW) accompanying the merger of binary black holes at the ringdown stage. GW observations of quasi-normal modes of the newly formed super dense remnant will help clarify the physics of the event horizon.

Destroying the Event Horizon of Regular Black Holes

Abstract:Recently, several authors have studied the possibility of overspinning or overcharging an existing black hole to destroy its event horizon and make the central singularity naked. When all the effects are properly taken into account, any attempt to destroy the black hole seems to be doomed to fail, in agreement with the weak cosmic censorship conjecture. In this article, we study the possibility of destroying the event horizon of regular black holes. These objects have no central singularity and therefore they are not protected by the cosmic censorship hypothesis. Our results strongly support the conclusion that regular black holes can be destroyed. If we believe that the central singularity in astrophysical black holes is solved by quantum gravity effects, we might have a chance to see the black hole's internal region and observe quantum gravity phenomena. As our finding implies the violation of the black hole's area theorem, the collision of two black holes may release an amount of energy exceeding the Hawking bound, which can be experimentally tested by gravitational wave detectors.

Abstract:We solve the Klein-Gordon equation for a scalar field, in the background geometry of a dust cloud collapsing to form a black hole, everywhere in the (1+1) spacetime: that is, both inside and outside the event horizon and arbitrarily close to the curvature singularity. This allows us to determine the regularized stress tensor expectation value, everywhere in the appropriate quantum state (viz., the Unruh vacuum) of the field. We use this to study the behaviour of energy density and the flux measured in local inertial frames for the radially freely falling observer at any given event. Outside the black hole, energy density and flux lead to the standard results expected from the Hawking radiation emanating from the black hole, as the collapse proceeds. Inside the collapsing dust ball, the energy densities of both matter and scalar field diverge near the singularity in both (1+1) and (1+3) spacetime dimensions; but the energy density of the field dominates over that of classical matter. In the (1+3) dimensions, the total energy (of both scalar field and classical matter) inside a small spatial volume around the singularity is finite (and goes to zero as the size of the region goes to zero) but the total energy of the quantum field still dominates over that of the classical matter. Inside the event horizon, but \textit{outside} the collapsing matter, freely falling observers find that the energy density and the flux diverge close to the singularity. In this region, even the integrated energy inside a small spatial volume enclosing the singularity diverges. This result holds in both (1+1) and (1+3) spacetime dimensions with a \emph{milder} divergence for the total energy inside a small region in (1+3) dimensions. These results suggest that the back-reaction effects are significant even in the region \emph{outside the matter but inside the event horizon}, close to the singularity.

Black Hole Horizons and their Mechanics

Abstract:Black holes are often characterized by event horizons, following the literature that laid the mathematical foundations of the subject in the 1970s. However black hole event horizons have two fundamental conceptual limitations. First, they are defined only in space-times that admit a future conformal boundary. Second, they are teleological; their formation and growth is not determined by local physics but depends on what could happen in the distant future. Therefore, event horizons have not played much of a role in the recent theoretical advances that were sparked by discoveries of the LIGO-virgo collaborations. This article focuses on quasi-local horizons that have been used instead. Laws governing them -- mechanics of quasi-local horizons -- generalize those that were first found using event horizons. These results, obtained over the last two decades or so, have provided much insight into dynamical predictions of general relativity in the fully nonlinear regime. The article summarizes the deep and multi-faceted interplay between geometry and physics that has emerged. Conceptually, quasi-local horizons also play a key role in the discussion of the quantum evaporation of black holes. However, due to space limitations, this application is only briefly discussed in Section 6.

Abstract:Recent developments have ushered in a new era in the field of black hole astrophysics, providing our first direct view of the remarkable environment near black hole event horizons. These observations have enabled astronomers to confirm long-standing ideas on the physics of gas flowing into black holes with temperatures that are hundreds of times greater than at the center of the Sun. At the same time, the observations have conclusively shown that light rays near a black hole experience large deflections which cause a dark shadow in the center of the image, an effect predicted by Einstein's theory of General Relativity. With further investment, this field is poised to deliver decades of advances in our understanding of gravity and black holes through new and stringent tests of General Relativity, as well as new insights into the role of black holes as the central engines powering a wide range of astronomical phenomena.

Abstract:We consider the fundamental issues which dominate the question about the existence or non-existence of black hole horizons and singularities from both of the theoretical and observational points of view, and discuss some of the ways that black hole singularities can be prevented from forming at a classical level, i.e. without arguments of quantum gravity. In this way, we argue that black holes could have a different nature with respect the common belief. In fact, even remaining very compact astrophysics objects, they could be devoid of horizons and singularities. Our analysis represents a key point within the debate on the path to unification of theories. As recently some scientists partially retrieved the old Einstein's opinion that quantum mechanics has to be subjected to a more general deterministic theory, a way to find solutions to the problem of black hole horizons and singularities at a semi-classical level, i.e. without discussions of quantum gravity, becomes a fundamental framework.

Abstract:Black holes are one of the most fascinating predictions of general relativity. They are the natural product of the complete gravitational collapse of matter and today we have a body of observational evidence supporting the existence of black holes in the Universe. However, general relativity predicts that at the center of black holes there are spacetime singularities, where predictability is lost and standard physics breaks down. It is widely believed that spacetime singularities are a symptom of the limitations of general relativity and must be solved within a theory of quantum gravity. Since we do not have yet any mature and reliable candidate for a quantum gravity theory, researchers have studied toy-models of singularity-free black holes and of singularity-free gravitational collapses in order to explore possible implications of the yet unknown theory of quantum gravity. This book reviews all main models of regular black holes and non-singular gravitational collapses proposed in the literature, and discuss the theoretical and observational implications of these scenarios.

A main introductory Section, together with the Sections introducing each of the two parts of the manuscript compose the \emph{fil rouge} of the thesis, and are not published elsewhere. They contain reviews (together with my personal view) on the information paradox (Part 1) and the thermodynamics of spacetime (Part 2).

Abstract:Black and white holes play remarkably contrasting roles in general relativity versus observational astrophysics. While there is overwhelming observational evidence for the existence of compact objects that are "cold, dark, and heavy", which thereby are natural candidates for black holes, the theoretically viable time-reversed variants -- the "white holes" -- have nowhere near the same level of observational support. Herein we shall explore the possibility that the connection between black and white holes is much more intimate than commonly appreciated. We shall first construct "horizon penetrating" coordinate systems that differ from the standard curvature coordinates only in a small near-horizon region, thereby emphasizing that ultimately the distinction between black and white horizons depends only on near-horizon physics. We shall then construct an explicit model for a "black-to-white transition" where all of the nontrivial physics is confined to a compact region of spacetime -- a finite-duration finite-thickness, (in principle arbitrarily small), region straddling the naive horizon. Moreover we shall show that it is possible to arrange the "black-to-white transition" to have zero action -- so that it will not be subject to destructive interference in the Feynman path integral. This then raises the very intriguing possibility that astrophysical black holes might be interpratable in terms of a quantum superposition of black and white horizons.

Abstract:We measured Reynolds numbers R_e of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection over the Rayleigh-number range 2 times 10^8 < R < 10^11 and Prandtl-number range 3.3 < sigma < 29 for cylindrical samples of aspect ratio Gamma = 1. For R < R_c = 3 times 10^9 we found R_e ~ R^beta_eff with beta_eff = 0.46 < 1/2. Here both the sigma- and R-dependences are quantitatively consistent with the Grossmann-Lohse (GL) prediction. For R > R_c we found R_e = 0.106 sigma^-3/4 R^1/2, which differs from the GL prediction. The relatively sharp transition at R_c to the large-R regime suggests a qualitative and sudden change that renders the GL prediction inapplicable.

Abstract:This talk gives a brief introduction to black hole horizons and their role in black hole thermodynamics. In particular a distinction is made between quasi-locally defined horizons and event horizons. Currently some new techniques have led to interesting developments and the field seems to be growing in two distinct directions. We will show how thermodynamics can equally well be applied to locally defined horizons and discuss some recent results. The emphasis is on giving simple intuitive pictures and mathematical details are largely omitted.

Abstract:We consider a class of quasiregular singularities characterized by points possessing two future-directed light cones and two past-directed light cones. Such singularities appear in the 1+1 trousers spacetime and the Deutsch-Politzer spacetime. Abstract:The information loss paradox is often discussed from the perspective of the observers who stay outside of a black hole. However, the interior spacetime of a black hole can be rather nontrivial. We discuss the open problems regarding the volume of a black hole, and whether it plays any role in information storage. We also emphasize the importance of resolving the black hole singularity, if one were to resolve the information loss paradox.

Singularities in 2D and 3D quantum black holes

Abstract:We study black holes in two and three dimensions that have spacelike curvature singularities behind horizons. The 2D solutions are obtained by dimensionally reducing certain 3D black holes, known as quantum BTZ solutions. Furthermore, we identify the corresponding dilaton potential and show how it can arise from a higher-dimensional theory. Finally, we show that the rotating BTZ black hole develops a singular inner horizon once quantum effects are properly accounted for, thereby solidifying strong cosmic censorship for all known cases.

Abstract:We demonstrate that at the rim of the photon sphere of a black hole, the quantum statistics transition takes place in any multi-particle system of indistinguishable particles, which passes through this rim to the inside. The related local departure from Pauli exclusion principle restriction causes a decay of the internal structure of collective fermionic systems, including the collapse of Fermi spheres in compressed matter. The Fermi sphere decay is associated with the emission of electromagnetic radiation, taking away the energy and entropy of the falling matter without unitarity violation. The spectrum and timing of the related e-m radiation agree with some observed short giant gamma-ray bursts and X-ray components of the luminosity of quasars and of short transients powered by black holes. The release of energy and entropy when passing the photon sphere rim of a black hole significantly modifies the premises of the information paradox at the falling of matter into a black hole.

Abstract:A basic problem in gravitational physics is the resolution of spacetime singularities where general relativity breaks down. The simplest such singularities are conical singularities arising from orbifold identifications of flat space, and the most challenging are spacelike singularities inside black holes (and in cosmology). Topology changing processes also require evolution through classically singular spacetimes. I briefly review how a phase of closed string tachyon condensate replaces, and helps to resolve, basic singularities of each of these types. Finally I discuss some interesting features of singularities arising in the small volume limit of compact negatively curved spaces and the emerging zoology of spacelike singularities.
